    Sounds like you got a manufacturing defect, my hinge is tight and has no jiggle.

    Yeah, I sent it back for a replacement, hopefully it's better but I think it's a problem with the none-touch .

    You can save around $100 for the same config if you wait for an HP "sale", more if you live in a state that doesn't get charged tax.

    Thanks - is HP really aggressive on pricing or what am I missing on this config in general? I don't see anything from Dell or Asus or anyone with i7, 16GB, and 1080p screen for under $1000 - where are the corners being cut and what should I compare this to?

    There's conflicting information on that page especially regarding the graphics. The GT 740m is listed under details but no graphics is listed under specifications. Better verify before pulling the trigger.

    Meanwhile, in case any one is interested, there's currently a good coupon available.

    Hey guys, I've got one question.

    Is it possible to completely remove the 1TB HDD and replace it with like 256GB SSD?
    I have got a desktop workstation and NAS with all the data so I don't need 1TB laptop, I just need the speed.

    Would I need any reduction to do this? Or is SSD slot compatible with that HDD one? Are they the same size as well? Is it hard (mechanically) to do this on this model?

    Like I said in an earlier post the closest laptop to this one is the Toshiba P-series. Configured to the same specs as the Envy Touchsmarts they run almost the same price. Differences being the Toshiba puts a glossy screen on all models whereas HP has a matte on the 17-inch. The toshiba also uses GDDR3 video memory for the 740m (if this is indeed true, a quick google search tells me GDDR3 is on par with DDR3, the GDDR3 could be a typo since that's a fairly old memory type). This apple to apple comparison between the Toshiba P-Series and the HP Envy Touchsmart holds if you only take into account their configured price as is. HP likes to run a lot of 15-20% coupons on these computers which means the price difference could end up being as much as 200 bucks. But, to be fair, I've played with both in stores and the Toshiba feels like it's built a lot better. Just some personal bias here, as I still believe the HP Envy Touchsmart is a very nice machine for the price. I'd suggest looking at both at Best Buy and see what you think. I don't think you can screw up either way.

    EDIT: Concerning ASUS, they have not yet released Haswell 17-inch notebooks. If you're looking for a 15-inch, the ASUS N550 has the specs of the Envy Touchsmart + a true IPS display and 750m graphics. It's being sold by resellers for 1000-1100 currently, so it's probably going to cost a lot more than a Touchsmart with a coupon.

    Hey guys,
    I've been following the thread for awhile, and just wanted to clarify a few things I've read now that I have my HP Envy 15t-j000.

    The display is not a TN panel nor is it a IPS, it is a VA panel. The 15 inch 1366x768 and 1920x1080 both use the SVA panel made by Chi Mei. The color gamut on the 1366x768 is 45% NTSC with 200 nits of brightness whereas the 1920x1080 has a 60% color gamut with 300 nits of brightness. There is currently a model available in South Africa, the HP ENVY 15-j063ei ( http://www8.hp.com/za/en/products/la...ml?oid=5393731), which has an IPS panel with 72% NTSC color gamut and 300 nits brightness. I found what I assumed to be the part number of this display in the service manual, however, when I called HP parts to attempt to order it they told me they couldn't find the part number. If the part can be ordered separately it appears that a display change from the VA panel to the IPS panel may be possible as the panel bezel and casing can be fully disassembled.

    The display on the 17 inch version in the 1366x768 resolution is also an SVA panel but with 60% NTSC color gamut and 200 nits of brightness. The main reason people say the 17 inch panel 1920x1080 panel is because it has better viewing angles, the display use for this resolution is WVA panel with 300 nits of brightness. According to my talk with HP support WVA panels have a 160 degree viewing angle whereas the SVA panels have an undisclosed viewing angle which is presumably lower. The difference in the graininess between the 15 inch and 17 inch is most likely due to the higher quality Optronics panel being used versus the Chi Mei.

    The wireless card found in these laptops is subpar, either being a Realtek 8188EE (1x1) or a Intel Centrino 2230 with Bluetooth (2x2). However, unlike the last generation of HP computers there is no wireless whitelist that I can detect. I have tried an Azureware AW-NE773 Dual Band (2x2) wireless card and a Intel Ultimate-N 6300 Dual Band (3x3) with both of them working perfectly.

    Linux support for this laptop is excellent the keyboard, graphics and touchpad work out of the box, and the wireless driver for the Realtek card is readily available and the Intel card is supported out of the box.

    Hope this clears up some things for some users, if anyone wants further details or me to run any tests feel free to ask :)

    What is the average color gamut of modern laptop ? I have the 15t none-touch . It'd be cool if we could change the screen .

    What's the color gamut of the 17 1080p screen ?

    Am glad there isn't a whitelist for wifi cards, but has any found a sleeve that fits this thing snugly yet D: ?

    I think betwen 60 and 70% but I'm not sure.

    The 1080p 17 inch screen has a 72% color gamut like the 15 inch ips screen.

    I haven't found any sleeve yet, you'll probably want a screen protector since the keys sit really close to the screen and with the flex it'll rub.

    Wow! Thumbs up! Very informative post. That 15" 1366x768 screen is really poor yet most people seem to prefer it to the 15" 1920x1080 despite its inferiority. Must be subjective opinion.

    In other news, the Intel iris pro 5200 has better graphics than the GT740m.

    Hi,
    I am considering buying one of the new Envy 15 with an Full HD display.
    What I am a bit concerned of is the display, as it is not an IPS panel like in the Envy 15 from 2012, sadly. :(
    Those who have this laptop already, how is the display regarding contrast, viewing angle, brightness and reading in daylight. This is a big point for me and could be a deal breaker, thats why I am asking.
    Thanks in advance.

    I have an Envy 17 with the matte 1080p screen, and pretty sure it is a TN, not VA. It exhibits the typical TN contrast/color shift when viewed from off-angle. I have monitors of all types, including a BenQ VA monitor, so I know what a VA panel looks like. VA's also have 178 degree viewing angles, so 170/160 is firmly in TN territory.

    Good to hear about the wifi cards, however. I can't believe they didn't even give us one that supports 5ghz. My old laptops from the Core 2 Duo era that are 4+ years old even came with wifi that supported dual band.

    Well, finally received my Envy 15 touchsmart and the screen really is crappy! btw, I got the 1920X1080 one and the gamma/contrast is terrible, not to mention, I got a dead pixel right in the middle towards the top! also, the sound is not near as good as my Envy from last year...this junk is going back to HP! already called and got RMA today.

    The display of the 15" seems to be TN and not VA. Tracked a review of a laptop with the same Chi Mei CMN15BB panel the Envy 15t-j000 uses and it was the weakest point of the laptop with poor viewing angles, good brightness, poor colour reproduction and a rating of 74%. Its the greatest downside to the laptop.
    Review One K56-3F (Clevo W650SR) Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

    On the other hand, the panel on the Envy 17t-j000 uses an AU optronics AUO219D panel (most likely VA) which has great viewing angles, good colour reproduction and good brightness with a rating of 88%. Its also one of the laptops' greatest assets.

    With all the talk of the au optronics and chi lei screens I got a bit curious to see which one my 17t-j000 quad CTO came with and according to hwinfo I have an LG Philips LGD0372...which with my limited knowledge and no LG LCD model mentioned yet in here wanted to know if it's a 3rd model being used possibly or is it under an umbrella brand? TIA for clarification

    For the Envy 15t, which of the 2 choices for WiFi cards is better/faster? (I don't care about bluetooth capability)
    The bluetooth one or the one without bluetooth?
    Thanks!

    I can't say to "faster"

    However, mine came with the realtek no bluetooth chip, which I replaced for 13$ with a centrino 2230 from amazon, with bluetooth, because I wanted a bluetooth mouse (no adapter)

    I'm not sure if it will work with bios whitelisting nsuch, but I believe one of the fastest chips on the market actually is the intel 7260

    That realtek chip that came by default, while I did not benchmark speed, did not have any reliability issues what so ever

    This is the 1st I've heard of that particular display and all my searches have proved abortive. The closest I could find was the LG LP173WF1-TLB5 panel used in the Envy dv7 from late last year. Note that the AU Optronics panel was also used in the dv7 series from last year.

    For anyone looking for Windows 7 drivers I have compiled most of them for the 15-j059nr. My company purchased several of them for the sales people, but we use W7 within our domain. The process was a pain so I'd like to help a few people from scouring the web for all the drivers. Most were pulled directly from the HP site but a few required some searching:

    sp61949 = Nvidia 740m drivers
    intel_usb3_win7_ver25019.zip = usb 3.0 host controller (asus)
    sp61819 = synaptic touch
    sp61258 = IDT Audio Drivers (?) - I can't get these drivers to take...
    sp61273 = Intel Graphics
    sp61797 = usb 2.0 port replicator (?) - If you plan on using a HP Port Replicator
    sp61798 = usb 3.0 port replicator (?) - If you plan on using a HP Port Replicator
    sp61263 = Valdity Fingerprint
    sp61271 = Realtek Card Reader
    sp61291 = HP 3D HDD Guard

    Of course. The hard drive is secured in a rubber caddy that secures itself into the mounting holes of the hard drive. You pop off the plastic cover for the RAM/hard drive/wireless card, remove drive/caddy out of the laptop, remove the rubber caddy from the hard drive, then replace the hard drive with the SSD. It's no different than any other laptop hard drive replacement. I did it on my 15t-j000 with a 256GB Crucial M500. :)

    So have we confirmed that the 15/17 j000 laptops don't have wi-fi card restrictions in place? That would be amazing if I didn't have to flash with a whitelisted BIOS! I'm close to ordering a Centrino 7260 Wireless-AC if this is the case.

    I agree that it looks like a poor TN panel but http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03733656/c03733656.pdf lists it as VA. Maybe a really poor VA screen?

    Great articles comparing the screen, thanks! I compared the two in costco yesterday and can definitely see a difference, though the 17t screen still has quite poor vertical viewing angles in my opinion.

    The one you get when ordering the bluetooth model would be faster since it has 2x2 MIMO support for wireless N. The non bluetooth card will get 72Mbps with 20Mhz channel width and 150 Mbps with 40Mhz channel width. While the bluetooth model will get 150Mbps with 20Mhz channel width and 300Mbps with 40Mhz channel width. These are assuming your N router is MIMO compatible. If you only run a wireless G network at home there are no difference between the two.

    I would recommend buying the bluetooth card separately and replacing it yourself since its around $10 on amazon while HP charges $15. Then you have two wireless cards so you'll have a backup if anything goes wrong with one :).

    There is no whitelist in place on the 15t, I would assume that this would also apply to the 17t. The Intel 7260 a/b/g/n/ac card works great in my 15t on Windows 8, however it has no Windows 7 or Linux support.

    I don't think the information listed on the ComputerUpgradeKing website is correct.

    According to the HP website, the ENVY 17-j029nr uses a 750M with DDR3 memory.

    Has anyone had difficulty getting their customized HP Envy 17t j000 touchsmart laptop from HP? I ordered my laptop from the HP website on July 22nd for shipment on July 31st. On July 31st, I received an email saying that due to production delays the shipment date would be August 9th and I would receive 24 hour updates on my order and receive an email when the laptop was shipped and receive a tracking number. I have not received updates, the new shipping date has come and gone, no tracking number has been issued to me, I have not received email for a new delay in shipment, and I have contacted HP by chat and phone with promises of corrective action but still I have not seen any progress. Am i being too impatient?

    Update: i did get a new delivery date of aug 16th... i connected hp by chat and got a 10% discount to be credited back to my card... the computer has been shipped and is on route by FedEx for a delivery date of aug 22... i needed the computer a few weeks ago, but i will be happy to finally get it... when i get it... (today is aug 18)

    and i have a question... when i ordered the computer the ordering form stated that 16GB ram upgrade could not be provided with the 24GB mSSD drive option, which is what i ordered... the question is, will there be problems with the computer if i upgrade the ram myself to 16GB with the mSSD?

    I'm having the same problem. My order has been delayed three time and all they are going to give me for it is a 10 percent credit back. I asked for upgraded shipping and they refused saying they aren't able to change it. And no you aren't being too impatient. They are still taking orders, I wonder if new orders are going to get delayed as well.

    I'm still having issues locating a replacement 120W slim power brick. It comes up in PartSurfer, but is not available to order direct from HP, and PartSurfer refers you to their authorized part dealers. Going through each one of them is going to be a nightmare, if they even have the f'n part.

    For me, it's part number 710415-001. Has anybody had any luck locating a vendor where these are available? Sick of moving my power adapter around from work to home everyday.

    So a misprint by that site? It was put on their website on Monday August 12, 2013 so maybe HP will eventually add the DDR5 version? Maybe the DDR5 version was delayed so that is why it cake out with the DDR3? The reason I say that because Asus, MSI, and Sager uses the DDR3 version with the GT 750M. Just recently did i see the MSI GE series switch from the DDR3 to the DDR5 on Xotic. Maybe its me just hoping that HP decides to go with the DDR5 version.

    I don't expect HP to give us any Graphics cards from the GTX series, but what are the odds of HP giving us the Nvidia GT 755M in October or anytime after that? I don't see any Laptops using the GT 755M yet, maybe Nvidia isn't making it avaliable until the Fall.

    For the 15t/j, it's HP part 720545-001, which includes the caddy and cable. I looked in the 17t/j maintenance guide and it doesn't list the caddy and cable, but the illustrations make it look like it's the same thing. My money is on that it is.

    Pretty sure the 15 only comes with 1 HD Drive, unless I'm blind or his talking about the mSata slot .

    so I'm looking at ordering one of these and just looking for some advice

    mostly, is $30 for the backlit keyboard worth it? also is a hybrid drive worth it if I plan to use the 1TB drive as my secondary drive and stick a SSD in as my primary or will the hybrid portion be wasted on a media drive?

    thanks :)

    edit: also if anyone knows of any good coupons, especially if they can stack with either EPP or student discounts

    So I saw another person with the weird clam shell but left side of screen is rised issue and I just got my 2nd HP in the mail and it has the same problem, I'm starting to think this isn't an isolated issue but comes with all the None-Touch 15 models .

    Anyone else got this ?

    It does. What's your point? I said that the 17 maintenance guide doesn't list the part number for the caddy for him to order, but the 15 maintenance guide does. I then said I would bet the two use the same part number, and he could just buy that. The mSATA cards don't use a caddy, they just screw down like Wi-fi cards do.

    Kind of confused at what you're trying to say, sorry.

    Do you know if the 17 can fit 2 HDDS and a mSata without removing the wifi?

    That would be awesome. I came from a dv7t-6100, which was a beast and had two bays. I miss that feature in my 15t...would be nice to pair a nice hard drive with my 256 GB Crucial M500 SSD.

    Not sure, I have the 15t. Hopefully someone with the 17t/j can answer your question.

    I did.
    vs the stock (cheaper CTO option - Realtek?) wireless-n card I replaced , my lan speeds went from read/write 106/76 Mbps, to 310/130 Mbps.
