Do you guys know if these units are overclockable? And do they have switchable graphics from IGP to Discrete?

Some have said that the IGP is disabled, which would be a shame for battery life's sake, and for doing QuickSync type encoding.

I don't really care for the feel and the look but are the glass touch models build/durability more then the non-touch plastics ?

The screen on the non touch is flush right? I know it is not glass but it is flush from edge to edge right?

Entire machine is the same, but the lid is heavier due to glass. This the glass covered panel that is bit more durable. That's all.

The non-touch model is not flush. Not flush from edge to edge. Has a chunky black bezel around the display panel.

I ordered a 17t-j000 from HPDirect and received it 2 days ago. Here are some first impressions.
    Specs:
    HP ENVY 17t Quad
    • Windows 8 64
    • 4th generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor
    • Included 2 Year Warranty
    • Intel HD Graphics 4000
    • 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • Backlit Keyboard
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    • 802.11b/g/n WLAN

    Overall I would rate the:
    Internal components A-
    Screen B
    Case/Build quality C-

This is to replace my wife's 5-year old dv6, so that is the context of my comparison.
The intended use is word processing, web browsing, and media playback.
    Internal components:
Haswell is great, the wprime score (260 seconds for 1024 test) is about 6 times faster than that of the 2009-era core2duo in the dv6.
The laptop runs cool. Intergrated GPU (HD4600) is fine for blu-ray playback.
I replaced the internal HD with a SSD and am getting ~500MB/s read and write (WEI went from 5.9 to 8.1), so the sata3 bus is fast.
There is an internal slot for a second HD but you'd have to purchase a cradle and cable.

    Screen:
The 1920x1080 anti-glare screen is one of the better matte laptop screens I have seen. Not IPS AFAIK, but good viewing angles, colors etc.
Not on a par with high-end ultrabook displays, which is why it's a B.

    Case/Build quality:
This is my main disappointment. The case on this non-touch model seems all plastic. The dv6 was built like a (plastic) tank, and has lasted 4 years without any damage.
But I'm not too confident of the 17t's durability. But no obvious defects such as gaps in the body.
I've seen some 2012 touch envy models that had metal palmrests etc. and seemed generally better built, not sure if this was true of all 2012 envys.
Besides cost savings, no doubt the non-touch models go with a light plastic shell for weight reasons (17.3" 17t weighs the same as the old 15'6" dv6).
But this is the main aspect that made me lean towards returning the laptop.
Also the keyboard has a disconcerting amount of flex, which I guess has long been true of the envy 17.
In the end, we'll probably keep the laptop, between the hassle of returning it plus its good qualities.

Is the second HDD slot just for the 17 inch ? If'd be a big plus if the 15 had 2 x Sata 3s + the mSata SSD slots .

Yes, it comes standard with internal Blu-ray reader/dvd writer drive. That was a deciding factor over the 15t.

Have a look around the seam, where the top of the palm rest joins up to the black plastic bottom. There should be a .25mm to- 5mm gap line, that run right around this join, especially noticeable on the corners. The gap goes direct into the laptop (e.g. if positioned right, you will see light coming from internal LED's), without any kind of plastic recess. It a weak join, that is just relies on the screws alone.

That good, maybe it was just related to the batches brought around here and distributed to the each retail store.

Still have doubt in the join though, there is no psychical plastic lip to join these two parts together, when I had a good look at several models.

Besides that, I am still eagerly waiting for my 750M version to arrive, the wait is kill me though.

Can you do a run with prime95 or OCCT, let use know what the temps and fan noise is like?

What is the mSata slot in the 17 inch ? The new ngf 2.0 thing ? Also where is the ram located because when you add the 16gb of ram in the custom config it blocks out the option to have a SSD cache, which has me wondered that somehow one will not allow the other .

Thanks for the impressions! I only ordered yesterday, so my estimated ship date is July 9th. Was your ship date on, before or after your estimated ship date?

Also, regarding the switching out of the hdd with a ssd, which is what I am intending to do, how did you go about it? I've not used Windows 8 before, but I've read how OEM licenses are activated is now different from previous Windows.

Assuming you re-installed Windows 8 when you switched to the SSD:
Is there a sticker with a Win8 license key?
Is there some HP thing that lets you burn recovery media?
Did you use that recovery media and do a fresh re-install of the OS? If so, was the Windows license automatically activated without problems?

    Thanks for any info.

Edit: Oh! And if you could give any battery life impressions that would be great as well, seeing as how you opted for the integrated Intel graphics only just like I did.

OCCT stress test brings cpu temps to 85-90c. The fan is noticeable but not loud enough to be annoying IMHO.

I just backed up (using Acronis) from the HD partition as received, then recovered it to the SSD after initializing the SSD as a GPT disk (requires Acronis 2013 I believe). No need to reenter license. Bloatware is minimal so no need for a fresh install.

Battery life is ~5 hours, the battery is fairly small so unfortuntaley you don't get all day battery life as in some of the Haswell ultrabooks. But at least it's removable.

Damn the 750m model still isn't up. Well I'm going to place an order and if the 750m comes out before it ships I'll try my luck and threatening to cancel if they don't up the video card and price match my coupon.

And if so, also open de back covers, and check if there is an mSATA slot or not, and if it can be used as an HDD instead of simply a chache

I've ordered a version of the Envy 15 from the Swedish HP webstore with:

    4702MQ
    1920x1080 IPS display, non-touch
    8 GB RAM
    ...aaand *drumroll*
    GT 750M GDDR5

It's expected to be delivered in "1-2 weeks".

Have I understood it correctly that it shouldn't be a problem to replace the mechanical HDD with a SSD? The major remaining concerns are batterylife and build quality then. And cooling performance.

Hey everyone! So like many of you, I couldn't let go of saving over $400+ on a new HP laptop with he 4th gen Intel i7 processor.
I ended up buying one with this configuration:

    •HP ENVY 17t Quad
    • Windows 8 64
    • 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4900MQ Processor
    • Included 2 Year Warranty
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
    • 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • 24GB mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • Backlit Keyboard
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    • 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)

I was talking about it so much today that my cousin actually ordered the same exact model as I did a few hours later! So we both ordered the same laptop. The great thing is that we have 21 days to return it if we aren't satisfied.

I didn't know until after I had ordered, that there was a discrepancy between the 740 and 750 GPUs. I really wished that I would have known before ordering but now it's too late. I just hope that they come out with the 750 in time so I can cancel my order and get it.

Sadly, the SUMMER30 coupon has expired. So we wouldn't be able to get 30% anymore. I tried talking to a HP rep, over the phone and got in contact with a supervisor. The supervisor said that if the 750 is offered in a couple days, they wouldn't be able to price match to cover for the change from 740 to 750. So that means that I wouldn't be saving $400 :(

Oh well, I can always return it or sell it online for way more than I bought it for!

    That reminds me,

    HP ENVY 17t Quad - E4S78AV - (1) - $1017.79

    Got it for

    $1017.79

    Summary of savings

    Instant discounts:
    $436.20 Coupon

    CA tax: $92.50
    Shipping: $9.99
    CA recycling fee*: $3.00

    Total: $1123.28

    Ended up paying $1123.28.

All in all, not bad at all. :)

If someone who already has the ENVY 17 inch with the 740 GPU, could you give us a screenshot of the device manager and some info about the GPU and other things? Would you mind uploading some pictures or a video on youtube?
    Thanks!

If you guys have any questions, shoot them over to me! More than glad to help with whatever I can.
Can't wait till my laptop ships out on the 10th of July!!! :)

    Damn where are you 750m

Also worried about the mSata slot, if you pick anything above 8gb of ram you can't put an SSD cache .

The Y510p which is using the m.2 (new sata), has a slot but it's a smaller 42mm which leads me to suspect to make it that slim, HP may have doomed the msata slot for more ram or vice-versa .

Must be a mistake or typo.... 100% sure there will be only Ddr3 version...
I work at HP as a product manager for LATAM.
Hopefully I am wrong... And really someone up there change their mind and move from ddr3 to ddr5 and still I have not being notified... Because I have been fighting for the DDR5 as well...

great laptop, me the same except the CPU: 4800mq, it did cost me about 1036 after tax ( CA tax + shipping + recycling fee T_T). This version expected to have the same TN panel display just like the 2012 model; maybe LG Phillips or Chimei.

I bit the bullet. My Asus G60Jx is slowly dying...I got this model for around $1150. Plus bought the 3 year insurance for a total of ~$1400.

It'll ship on July 10th with 2 day shipping. Hopefully the 750M comes out so I can get that instead.

    •HP ENVY 15t Quad
    • Windows 8 64
    • 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4900MQ Processor
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory

The 4900mq is more powerful than the 4700mq.
He probably did it so that he qualified for a higher tier of discount.

I think he was responding to this:
The 4702MQ has a max TDP of 10W less than the 4700MQ (37W vs 47W). I'm not sure how much that would improve battery life, but it should extend it somewhat.

I did order the 4900 to qualify for the 18month financing for orders above 1199.

I think I'll actually keep the 4900mq because this will be a long term laptop. The next 4 years or so. But the gpu is the only thing making me mad. I know I can play SimCity or Civ5 on it on medium with a 1366x768 resolution at least. So I'll be fine I hope. Thoughts?

Since I do DJ 3 nights a week at a restaurant and weddings every now and then this laptop will do well for me. Definitely will stress test it once it comes. My friends owns a dv 17in model and that computer by my standards is crap. The touchpad irritates the crap out of me.

By the way if anyone here lives on XDA forums, they'll vouch alongside me to say how much nicer and level headed everyone is here.

I'm wondering why anyone is ordering the 4702MQ. I'm reading through Intel's specs and the processor appears to be a lesser processor than the 4700MQ for more money.

The power consumption on the 4702 is less. Even the new SLI Lenovo 510p comes with the 4702mq

Wouldn't you get more bang for our buck just spending the extra $100 on another battery and still qualify for the higher coupon tier?

Not sure about pricing specifics but I definitely recommend get the 4702mq if you are getting a discrete gpu on this thing, even more so if the 750m comes out. Less heat being generated in that small frame the better,

This is simply not true; the 4700MQ is faster and will thus be operating at a higher capacity for less time, and the thermal output total will be roughly equal. TPD will indicate *maximum* thermal output, but not *average* thermal output. 4702 is a waste of money unless your machine cannot handle cooling the 4700.

Every HP that has came out with a single cooling solution such as a dv6, just like this Envy branded 2013 dv6 will not be able to handle cooling of a 45w once under load as per-normal. I can't see how this will be the exception.
Also less heat equals less fan noise, cooler to touch platform, which is important to a lot of users.

As I mentioned though, you can always undervolt/underclock the thing and eliminate those issues should they arise.

Went into Bestbuy, the 17 inch looks really good but I can't find a 15 inch to confirm if the screen is washed out as reported .

I've yet to see a "turbo boost" variant CPU that does not try to operate at full capacity when under load. Granted you can use something like throttlestop to limit the cpu and reduce heat, but if you're doing that anyway why not just get the 4702? It WILL operate at noticeably lower temperatures under load without extra tinkering. An HP Envy 15 will certainly not have a cooling solution capable of cooling both a 4700/4900 and a 750 discrete comfortably while under load.

...speaking of which, where the f is my 750m option HP? -_-
