Yes, I am longing to see how the 740m performs on a FHD display. Could you do a 3DMark benchmark on it? Also, could you look in NVIDIA settings and verify that it's really on a 64-bit memory interface? Thanks!

Check if there is an mSata slot (also what type, the old one or m.2 NGFF and how big the slot is) and if the display is washed out (I know it's going to be subjective, but maybe take a picture of the screen on the metro ui) .

Does it looked washed out to you ? I'm concerned because the richland model review from T205 says it's washed out .

What's that slot below the hard drive, next to the wireless card ?

Things I have left to ask is if you can report back after using it for a bit about the battery life and also, does the RAM block the mSata slot ? If you configure the model with anything past 8gb of ram, it disables the option for mSSD cache .Btw what wireless card did you replace it with ? The Blue-tooth option would put it on the wireless card right ? So if I buy the 15t, and replace the wireless card it would be pointless ? Hows the heat/temps ? Sorry if I have a lot of questions, just need to get as much info as possible .

Thanks for all the info !

It is 64-bit at 14.72 GBs. I didn't buy 3dmark so its done on the basic mode. 1280X720

    3Dmark
    Ice Storm = 49521
    Cloud Gate = 5417
    Fire Strike = 1016

    3Dmark 11
    P1906
    Graphics score of 1803

what do you guys think of these scores?

Exactly and well said, those are my same thoughts.

Many pre built models listed come with the 37w i7-4702MQ and 750M, likely to reduce thermals.

Yes download the latest GPUZ and post a screen shot.

Download HWinfo, going the display section, post what make and model the display panel is.

Download the unigene Valley demo/benchmark. Run benchmark and post score.

Btw. Yours is the non-touch model right? Due to being FHD does the screen appear to be IPS like or is it definitely just a TN panel with the usual color inversion when tilted back?

Reading from this NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M - NotebookCheck.net Tech, it seems that it's a significant amount worse then the gk1 .

But that's just from that source, haven't seen any other sources .

Just to compare, could you switch to the iGPU (HD 4600) and see what it's scores are ? If it difference is big enough, I might bite .

    Capture.JPG

Display: Chi Mei [Unknown Model: CMN15BB]

    Valley
    FPS: 11.9
    Score: 500
    Min FPS: 5.4
    Max FPS: 22.9

Didn't change any settings from start up.
    Render: Direct3D11
    Mode:1920x1080 fullscreen
    Preset:Custom
    Quality: High

I would say it is NOT an IPS, starts to invert when tilted back slightly. and yes non-touch

If you could, could you try the thing I posted above with switching to the iGPU and testing that to compare them ?

Also, from another previous post you may have missed, do you know what they slow next to the wireless card is below the HDD ? I'm guessing between the HDD and RAM is the mSata slot .

Thanks for the GPUZ screenshot. That confirms that it is a GK208 core with 64bit memory bus and 14.7 GB/s bandwidth. Nice stock core clock at 980MHz although.
Bit surprised about the ROPS, to bad the ROPS are only 8 half that of other GK107 cores (640M, 645M, 650M, 740M (GK107), 745M, or 750M) which are all 16 ROPS. With the 740M GK208 being only 8 ROPS, this will have an impact on performance too, in conjunction with the limited memory bandwidth.

Getting the feeling this GPU is going to struggle in some games, especially minimal frame rate in certain areas during gaming. Fine GPU for anything else rather than gaming though, if you are not a gamer.

Ouch, it is the Chi Mei CMN15BB panel. I personally had this on the unit I reviewed, an didn't like it. Worse part is the vertical banding/grain, viewing angles are very poor on this panel, such better for a FHD panel even though it is a TN type panel.

Thanks for the valley benchmark too.

Yeah certainly not IPS, but a TN panel, a sub-par panel at that.

I ran the 3dmark 11 test again with the iGPU. I have the 3rd gen I5-3230m so its Intel HD 4000. It was hard to watch with less then 4 FPS the whole time.

    3dmark 11 iGPU
    Score P598
    GPU 511

ha yeah I typed up a whole response to that but timed out and lost it...

The lower slot is the msata, older slot pattern with only one key. I believe the new msata has a 2 key pattern. I did not look very closely in the space between the hard drive and ram but I assume its just extra open space for the hard drive connector ribbon cable. Unless I am completely wrong with the msata slot, I don't see a physical problem with 2 dimms and an msata.

Is there any way we could confirm the slot below the harddisk in the photo is a msata slot as mini pcie and msata slot looks the same but connected to different controllers.

If true then anyone have any experience of real life performance of msata cache with regular hardisk compared to SSD in eg. booting time , program loading this sort. Also battery life as ssd only require a fraction of power compared to HDD in full load.

Cool to hear about the mSATA slot... my question is, if there is some kind of limitation with this slot, or if I can just install a MUSHKIN SSD ATLAS DELUXE 240GB mSATA in there, and use it as the primary HDD?
(I want to do this: Triple Your Speed: How to Install an mSATA SSD Boot Drive in Your Laptop)

As for the screen, apparently here in Portugal we are getting lucky... the specs in the HP Portuguese website state IPS screen ( Portátil HP ENVY 15-j005ep (E4Q41EA) | HP® Portugal). Tomorrow they are finally coming to stores, so I'll have to check them out, to confirm the nobody messed up the specs

I doubt it, the Chi Mei CMN15BB screen will be more or less exactly the same. Even though not every identical model panel is created equal. The general characteristics will remain the same however, the vertical lines/grain will be there.

I am pretty fussy, so I notice imperfections like this, and have seen this effect on a few cheap 1366 x 768 panels. First time I have seen it on a 1920 x 1080 panel.

There is the 2.5" drive bay which uses a rubber surround thing (which doesn't use screws) to hold the drive in place. Below that on the left is an msata slot and to the right of that is the mpcie slot with the wifi card in it. Above the mpcie slot are the 2 ram slots. Mine came with DDR3L-1600. I dont notice any banding with my screen. The backlight was a little harsh for the first few hours of use and adjusting the backlight brightness seems to affect the gamma somewhat, but my particular screen looks pretty good overall (although I would have paid extra for IPS if it was available as an option). It does have somewhat limited viewing angles, but I don't find any real issues with that once I have it adjusted.

For those interested in the 17t-j000, the screen on units with the 1920x1080 anti-glare option is a AU Oprtonics AUO219D, the same screen as has been used in the dv7 in the past. Reviews of the dv7 echo my opinion that it's a good (but not great) screen (if you prefer matte over glossy).

SO all that in short (from my cursory reading) sounds like TWO.. Simple question deserves a simple answer....

Anyways this is kind of annoying seeing as how I wanted to put in 2 regular 2.5 inch drives in the laptop. 1 an SSD and then later on a HDD perhaps. Looks like you can only put in an msata drive and 1 regular 2.5 inch drive.....

Waiting for my shipment email....soon I should have it.

That score looks pretty good- close to what the other 740m's are benchmarking on the 3dmark site (most of which I'd imagine would be the better gk107). Is that score repeatable - to really predict performance one needs to know if the score is representative. I hope so! I have one coming on Monday.

Hi, been reading up on this computer since I ordered mine a couple days ago and have noticed something interesting when digging deeper into the specs....hope you can clarify for my peace of mind....on the hp website and in your laptop build info it states hd 4000 as the IGP with the haswell i7-4700mq, but in your review further down, you state a 4600 IGP, is it in fact a 4600 chipset which hopefully you can verify through your computer? hopefully so because I find it sstrange for the newest i7 to be running an older IGP.......I appreciate you're help/knowledge for the clarification...

OTE=carloscarr;9261433]I ordered a 17t-j000 from HPDirect and received it 2 days ago. Here are some first impressions.
    Specs:
    HP ENVY 17t Quad
    • Windows 8 64
    • 4th generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor
    • Included 2 Year Warranty
    • Intel HD Graphics 4000
    • 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • Backlit Keyboard
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    • 802.11b/g/n WLAN

    Overall I would rate the:
    Internal components A-
    Screen B
    Case/Build quality C-

This is to replace my wife's 5-year old dv6, so that is the context of my comparison.
The intended use is word processing, web browsing, and media playback.
    Internal components:
Haswell is great, the wprime score (260 seconds for 1024 test) is about 6 times faster than that of the 2009-era core2duo in the dv6.
The laptop runs cool. Intergrated GPU (HD4600) is fine for blu-ray playback.
I replaced the internal HD with a SSD and am getting ~500MB/s read and write (WEI went from 5.9 to 8.1), so the sata3 bus is fast.
There is an internal slot for a second HD but you'd have to purchase a cradle and cable.

    Screen:
The 1920x1080 anti-glare screen is one of the better matte laptop screens I have seen. Not IPS AFAIK, but good viewing angles, colors etc.
Not on a par with high-end ultrabook displays, which is why it's a B.

    Case/Build quality:
This is my main disappointment. The case on this non-touch model seems all plastic. The dv6 was built like a (plastic) tank, and has lasted 4 years without any damage.
But I'm not too confident of the 17t's durability. But no obvious defects such as gaps in the body.
I've seen some 2012 touch envy models that had metal palmrests etc. and seemed generally better built, not sure if this was true of all 2012 envys.
Besides cost savings, no doubt the non-touch models go with a light plastic shell for weight reasons (17.3" 17t weighs the same as the old 15'6" dv6).
But this is the main aspect that made me lean towards returning the laptop.
Also the keyboard has a disconcerting amount of flex, which I guess has long been true of the envy 17.
In the end, we'll probably keep the laptop, between the hassle of returning it plus its good qualities.[/QUOTE]

It is HD4600. AFAIK no Haswell CPU uses the older HD4000, but I could be wrong.

If you are publicly telling everyone you work at HP as a manager, why don't you please explain why there is such a long wait for the 750M model, or what the delay is for a simple GPU change to 750M, is not like it is brand new tech and is still a GK107 core part from last year, there should be no shortages, other manufactures have their products out a long time ago.

This seems to be the ETA from the random people I get when I call HP, they are saying there is stock in my country. Everytime I talk to the suppliers they are told by HP there is no stock.

    Where are the notebooks?

Pretty bad service by HP, both to the customer and suppliers.

Man just trying to help, but i dont have info from other countries (i can tell pretty well when GT750M will arrive to Chile, Argentina, Peru or Colombia) as I work for Latinamerica...
Just know at worldwide level we have almost a month between GT740M and GT750M knowing that other vendors already have GT750M on the street (like lenovo for example)

The reason? dont know for sure, but every platform has a FCS (first customer shipment date), the option with 750M is almost month later than GT740M... could be the ODM? tooling? shortage? dont know the exact reason...
In fact to configure the platform with the GT750M for my countries I have available only the Core i7 4702 since its TDP is 37W, I was not allowed to configure it with the 4700 for example...

Is that configurator for internal employees/sales people? I tried this on the HP USA page just for fun. I can select 4700 or 4702 (which actually costs $40 more) but for my graphics card option, I still only have 740M. It doesn't change to 750M.

Is the internal configurator (in some countries HP does not sale CTO products, so there is only couple of fixed option decided to introduce by people like me...
For example the 2 Skus that will be sold in latin america are the following

    15-j003la (Core i7 4700m / 8GB / HD / 1TB Hybrid / GT740M DDR3)
    15-j004la (Core i7 4702m / 16GB / FULL HD / 1TB Hybrid / GT750 DDR3)

The first one is already available for sale on stores since june, the 2nd one will arrive to the countries in 2 weeks (still not shipped from the ODMs)
    HP Envy 15-j003la - SoloNotebooks

Since I was not allowed to configure and i7 4700 + GT750M I am guessing that when GT 750M appears on the HP US site will be compulsory to choose i7-4702 for the lower TDP of 37W vs 47W of the others CPUs.

I received my laptop late last week, and yesterday I finally got Linux installed on it after trying out several distros and combinations. But wifi card is not recognized, so I'm waiting for my Intel wifi card to arrive end of this week. To get Linux installed, you've to turn of UEFI and SecureBoot apparently..

BTW, my HP laptop specs: Intel 4700MQ with HD4600, 16GB RAM, 1TB Hybrid HDD.
