Hey guys. I'm someone new to laptop hardware but was way excited to hear that the new envy's graphics card (7850m) is pretty decent. I have a couple questions I suppose.
I will probably get the regular envy 17 due to reading about the switchable graphics issue. I plan to use the laptop for everyday tasks, as well as some gaming (Starcraft 2, Skyrim) etc. I have been making photoshop a hobby lately as well.
Would 16gb of ram be overkill for my uses? Is 12gb a better way to go?
I thought about getting the 300gb SSD drive. Does hp use a good drive? I heard its only SATA 2, which I also read somewhere isn't as good as SATA 3. Will I notice much of a difference if I got SATA 3? Sorry for the noob questions, just thought I'd try you guys because you seem to be cool.
Thanks.

and yes the battery life took a beating.
just recently tried to watch john carter on blu ray at 120hz. could not make it through the entire movie on a full charge. -
91WHr is a nice battery. -
can someone clarify if the Envy 17 3D issue is restriction that will stay with no software fix or is there a hope?
I can not believe anyone is ready to give up 3-4 hours of battery life on a laptop for stupid 3D
I will return mine for sure if there is no fix -

The 17 3d battery is supposed to be a 6 cell not 8. Im just wondering if you guys testing it are turning on all the energy saving features of the laptop. im sure you could try to squeeze out a bit more time with screen brightness set to low etc. I found out that the actual 7850m card isnt called switch able "according to some resources on AMD" instead they call it a hybrid card.

I have the custom configured 3200, and there is no cosmetic flaw on mine, and no sqeaky keys. In fact, there's practically zero keyboard flex like what I've seen in some Youtube videos.
Build quality is excellent on mine. -

I can't believe anyone is willing to use the power settings required to get 4 hour battery life. -
AMD 7850m specs
ATI Mobility GPUâ„¢ 3D Graphics Accelerators
ATI CrossFireX™ Ready Yes
ATI Hybrid Graphics Ready Yes
ATI Switchable Graphics Ready No
AMD CrossFire™ multi-GPU technology: Supports dual GPU performance scaling
I can not find any info as to what HYBRID is
furthermore, the Envy 2D also uses the same GPU so how could that one be switchable and not this one. -

Question for anybody with this new laptop:
I've been out of the game for a while. I have an Envy 1010nr, and have been enjoying it for nearly two years now. I think it's time to upgrade, and I'm wondering if this would be worth the upgrade. There's simply no other laptop I've found in the meantime that offers the same combo of high performance, build quality and suits my preferences besides the Envy. Mine's got a Radeon 5850m and an i5-450m. How much difference would I notice performance-wise? In particular, how's the 5850m (HP's butchered version) vs the new 7850m?
Going from 1600x900, overheating issues and HDD to new graphics card, Ivy Bridge, SSD and 1080p screen will be awesome, methinks. -

I just got off chat once again. I have been told again that mine is definitely not delayed. They said that they are going through system maintenance and that is why it is not updating the status. Lets see if that is a lie, lol. -
Also, since I am leaving for med school I will need a power surge protector. Anyone recommend a good one in addition to a cooling mat please? -

FWIW ? My order STILL shows as scheduled to ship on 6/13 !!!. I'm trying to be patient, but I'm very disappointed in how HP has handled this.
I hope you have better luck than I've had. Please keep us posted. -
I placed my order on 6/7/12 and my scheduled shipping date was 6/26/12. Got an email on my way in to work today saying it was shipped
. I'll check the tracking number later today since it's too early to show any information.

with the higher end processor, video card, and memory, the hard drive is usually the weakest (slowest) link.
but no big deal unless you care about that stuff.
besides, a solid state drive (SSD) is much faster than traditional hard drives anyway. but more expensive. -
Anyways, Maybe you can answer this question for me. What would be the best way to transfer my music to my new envy once it arrives? Would you recommend doing it by purchasing an external drive? I have all the music stored in a personal folder on my desktop pc. I vowed never to put all my music on itunes again after I almost lost all of it once upon a time because itunes has that stupid security feature. -
