lol thanks. yeah the toshiba is still functioning but it has a meltdown everytime i play 720p video on youtube -_-. i did use compressed air but i think ill have to open it all up and dust everything off to have an effect and i have just not gotten around to it lol

I have the 3D version and was surprised how easy it was to get started (just put in username/password & computername and bam was in)... I have only partially installed Diablo3, WoW, & DDO (all 3 are still downloading) but could get into both WoW & Diablo3 and both ran very smooth out of the shoot with max graphics settings (except in WoW I reduced to 4x Aliasing). In WoW I was getting 77-80+ framerates though not sure how to verify FrameRates on Diablo yet... I just killed the downloads for WoW & Diablo3 after those initial tests as I really want to see the new DDO expansion on max graphics & then try 3D and it has to fully update before I can get in...
I will try to remember to update again once games are full installed and I have ISBoxer in place but so far I am very satisfied. The shipping was slow but the laptop arrived very safe & sound and I see no defects...
The one pain point thus far is that the track pad is very large and easy to hit when typing... Once I get my external wireless mouse & keyboard installed & configured this will be less of an issue but right now it is a little painful... The big touchpad was nice when watching the 3D Blu-Ray with my wife last night (bought an extra set of glasses with the initial purchase). -
U r welcome nodozen.I think thats why we are here at the Forum..to help each other and we got NotebookReview to thanks for that.
Yes I have been thinking about the screen Protector as well.
About the 3D.Nowadays plenty of movies are available BLu-Rays as well as torrent downloads. If you dont have a 3D monitor or 3D tv this can provide you with a great great experience.U can fire it up anywhere.
Apart from movies a lot of other content is available as well. But only thing is it might take a lil bit of time to get the hang of things like eye order and stuff. Its not perfect for every clip in the beginning but u will learn how tinker with settings to make it perfect for every clip.Once you are through with those u will love it.That will happen over time.
G73 uses Roxio Cineplayer and this uses PowerDVD.I had both but I found Roxio easier to use and use to be my Primary movie player for 3D.
Check out this 2min 3D clip.See if u like it

MAybe the thermal paste has worn off and the CPU/GPU needs repasting.Happens to most laptops in 2-3 yrs with moderate to heavy use specially if u havnt been cleaning regularly.I also learnt it the hard way.Heat takes a toll on everything. The thermal paste, batteries(if located near the CPU/GPU). but since I started cleaning vents regularly none of my laptops have had that problem. Also I dont a cooling pad.Minor thing but can sometimes can go a long way.
Just remember to keep a distance of 1cm to 1 inch from the vent and shoot the air in short bursts thats all.U dont wanna end up damaging your fan
-
I usually stop the fan from spinning by inserting an unbent paperclip through the vent holes. This immobilizes the fan so I can blow on it vigorously without having it spin (generating electricity/etc.).
-
Good idea though I would use a clean plastic coffee stir stick with a broad edge if you can as even small imperfections in the fan blades or their leading edges help degrade performance over time...
-
Fans even stopped in place, if the pressure is too high, the fins can be damaged as I know some people while it's not recommended still use air compressors. Just be careful.
-
U gotta take tht back cover off for tht.I just blow into the vent the spin of the fan causes the air to circulate thru and come out.Its like blow into the vent from one side and dust comes out thru the other.Back Cover removal cleaning is limited to once in 6 months or maybe even a year ..
Also the short bursts along with the little distance prevents you from blowing too hard into the fan.
Have been doing this on 6 laptops regularly ASUS G73 & K53 and Sony CB35 and NW120 and EB16 and also a friend's Dell XPS 15.All of them in good health.
-
Thanks for your help but that's just the thing...there is no option anywhere I've tried that let's you manually select the graphics card...I've literally looked at every single forum I could find and nothing has worked...in fact the strange thing is that I've read in a million places that by the sound of things most laptops have the option even in the BIOS to switch between discrete graphics and the Intel chipset...but the Envy 17 does NOT have this option...
Is it just me, or why am I getting the feeling that the 3D verion ONLY works with the Radeon chipset...but the non-3D version is nearly impossible to get working with the Radeon and only uses the Intel 4000 chipset?
To anyone that already has the Envy 17 non-3D version...how did you get the Radeon graphics to work in games...and did you manage to somehow force the Radeon graphics for ALL apps, including Windows? -
alright thanks ill look into it
-
dude its automatic. for any recent game (90%) of the time, it will run with radeon automatically even if it says its only detecting 4000. make sure u just got it plugged in. if it doesnt run auto, like 3dmark06 didnt want to, i just made it high performance in the switchable graphics. finally if it still doesnt run then, just open up the loading page for 3dmark11 (dont run the benchmarks just get to the settings page). that should do the trick.
-
I ordered my envy on the 21st and was suppose to ship on the 3rd, and I got the shipping update email today. Not bad i guess
-
I guess HP is starting to ship these Laptops on time now...
-
I've been using my Envy 17 for four days now and it great. It pretty much met my performance expectations, but I also have two cosmetic flaws. The top surface of the lid has a small blemish or more like a light scuff mark. I noticed it right away when I removed the cloth sleeve.
And just yesterday, while reading here about someone's comment on unevenness of their LCD panel, I noticed on the lid's edge where it meets the rubber that surrounds the LCD has abrasions. 3/16 of the edge has small indentations.
I'm debating on returning it. Right now I'm stress testing it to see if any thing will fail. -
yeah i have the blemish on my 15 also.
-
I'm in the market for a new keyboard. Any one recommend a keyboard that goes well with the Envy. I'm looking for one that is back lite.
-
Hi guys, I just got the hp envy 17. I am wondering how to make the wei evaluate the radeon 7850m instead of the intel hd 4000. I am very curious what the score will be. Right now when I run it, it keeps using the intel hd 4000.
-
No ones knows yet, hopefully AMD will release something to force usage of Radeon if we choose to do it.
-
Sounds like you're like me...I've tried EVERYTHING you can think of to get the Radeon graphics going but nothing seems to work...even forcing the graphics doesn't do anything...I've added programs into the "high performance" option in Catalyst but they still don't use the Radeon...as an example...I added in PassMark to the "high performance" option yet when I run benchmarks they all say it's using the HD 4000 chipset and not the Radeon...I think someone mentioned trying the BETA ATI desktop Catalyst driver...tried that as well and no go...
I've even tried calling HP but they were no help at all...get this...the person who was trying to troubleshoot didn't even have the latest Envy 17 with them! The ONLY one they have access to is the FIRST generation Envy 17 and not the latest one...or even the second generation...and I asked her if anyone there has the no one to help troubleshoot...but she said hope...no one has the new one...
Here's some late breaking news for everyone...confirmed via the tech support person I was speaking to at HP...the HD4000 and ATI Radeon is soldered together...so there's no way to 100% disable the HD4000 graphics chip...not sure what that means but it can't be good...this could be the reason why HP didn't even include an option to enable/disable each of the graphics options...
So NON-3D Envy 17's have trouble using the Radeon chipsets...and 3D Envy 17's can't seem to use the HD 4000 chipset...I smell class action lawsuit brewing here...I have a feeling that HP knows what's going on and is hoping enough people aren't tech savvy enough to cause any issues for them... -
Your statement is incorrect. If you do more research you will find that the HD 4000 integrated graphics chip is actually part of the CPU with the 3rd gen Ivy Bridge as well as the previous 2nd gen Sandy Bridge. If you do not understand what I mean you should research more.
The AMD 7850 is not soldered to the motherboard nor is it part of the Intel CPU which houses the HD 4000 graphics chip. Please click on the link and watch the video what explains how the HD 4000 works:
intel next generation Ivy Bridge processors overview - YouTube
Furthermore, the graphics switching on the non-3D models is handled by AMD's enduro technology which enables switchable graphics via system bios/software. Currently we 3D model owners are waiting for a bios and software update so we can have switchable graphics to enable our WiDi/HD 4000 Intel graphics card.
So save your lawsuit talk until you have completed more research and understand how the Intel processor works.
Please do not take constructive criticism personally.
Best Regards

Yaaaay,,,,,,,some one put Knight2000 straight!!!
I hate to use the term "Blabbermouth", so I'm glad RogueTitan7 put him straight for me. -
If that's the case then why is my BIOS (which I even tried updating) has NO option for graphics switching? If there's a graphics switch option for us non-3d Envy users then please tell me where it is because I'd love to find it! There's no software option either....or at least the options that are there don't work at all...I'm not the only one that's noticed this...other people on here are having the same issue...
-
OK, the bios are locked...
Please refer to your computers PDF manual page 7. Click on the link below
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03341457.pdf
Basically you click on the battery icon located by the clock and switch your power setting to power saver. This will switch the graphics card.
Like I said, you really need to do more research on your computer before you post questions to forums that are just as available to you as they are me.
Good Luck
-
May be the factory is catching up. Ordered at the beginning of the month. Still sitting in shanghai .
-
Thank you for the link but that's just it...everything that HP says...and claims just isn't true...from page 7 of the manual, "When you switch between AC and battery power, you are notified that the computer is preparing to
switch graphics modes. You can then choose to either continue to use the same graphics mode or to
switch. If you choose to switch, the screen goes blank for a few seconds. When the switch is
complete, a message appears in the notification area, and the screen image reappears."
Problem is that when I unplug the system there's NO notificaiton and nothing appears...it doesn't give me a choice...it just stays with the Intel 4000 graphics...To anyone that currently has a NON-3D Envy 17...do you get a notification when you pull the plug/plug it back in asking you regarding what graphics you want to use? I don't...wondering if there's a hardware issue with my system maybe...I even tried a full system recovery and still no change... -
I would agree with most of the technical part of your post. However the GPU is not socketed. It is not replaceable like the CPU and is soldered to the MB. Please refer to the service manual ( not owners manual) for replaceable and serviceable parts.
System board (includes 1 GB of discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement thermal material):
There are two system boards (3D & Non-3D) for the 32xx machines.
Equipped with the Intel HM76 chipset and 7850M graphics subsystem for use only on computer models equipped with a 3D display assembly part 689999-001
Equipped with the Intel HM76 chipset and 7850M graphics subsystem for use only on computer models equipped with a 2D display assembly part 689998-001
Previous generation Envys also the same. -
I just noticed this on my touch pad the bottom two corners aren't completely flush, they sort of go down a little. Is this normal?
-
If you mean the lower area is lower than the top area I have that too, it looks normal to me.
And yes, it's most likely the gpu is soldered onto the board, only a few laptops have replaceable gpus. Envy isn't one of them from what I can see with the back cover off. -
Hi
Haven't seen this mentioned in the thread yet.
Looks like HP has a new coupon for a $400 discount valid for the HP Envy 17-3200. Code is NBNY3238 -
It's been out for awhile & has been listed on forum. Actually this code is due to expire 6/30 so new code coming very soon.
Thanks for looking for codes though. -
If that is the case then HP should release a Software or BIOS Update...models have been released...People have received units..what are they waiting for..? -
It is the case, only a few hundred have been received and thus the reason why everyone cannot figure out why the ship date isn't until the first week to second week of July. The engineers are working on a fix for current owners and for the mas amount that has been put on hold, I have had this information confirmed.
-
Catalyst Control Center (CCC) will give you the option to set it to the 7850m or the Intel 4000, or switch automatically depending on the type of power supplied to the notebook.
ALSO,,,,
You can assign the type of graphics used for any program, depending on the one or both of the power source's.
Plug the notebook in to the PB and make sure there is AC power to the PB, the graphics should switch over automatically, its the default setting when you received the notebook.
New notebook and its time to read the instructions dude,,,,,have fun.
I'm assuming that you received the NON 3D unit?!
.
-
Ha Ha,,,,HP gives out incentives to the US customers, to prepay the engineering costs to repair the OS, BEFORE they ship any new (repaired) units out.......
I've been waiting since April 9th for a replacement 3D unit,,,,,,I hope the OS is fixed before its released here in Canada,,,,,,,
I hate it when company's use me as a guinea pig to improve their products (FORD is on the top of my [content removed] list).

The not so funny part about what are they waiting for is the following: "Because it is a feature and not a physical or cosmetic problem there is not a rush unless we are bombarded by customers with the same issue; however, we will get around to it soon" This is was word for word quoted to me when I asked the same thing. Go Figure.
That is why I push to everyone to call: 877-917-4380 ex 93 and demand that the engineers get their butts movin.

Hey everyone! I received my Envy 17 yesterday and so far so good. No cosmetic flaws, no internal flaws, no nothing...so far hahaha. Im actually typing from it now as I speak and I really love the feeling of the keyboard. I was seriously shocked when I witnessed just how bright the keyboard is, even in a room with the lights on. My eyesight is getting worse every couple of years so therefore Im extremely happy about this keyboard feature. Im so glad I went with this machine in lieu of the dv7 or the macbook. IMO the backlit keyboard on the DV7 looked so cheaply made and the lights looked all spilled over on the keyboard. Anyways, I ordered this machine on June 17and recieved it approximately 11 days from that date. Ihonestly couldnt be any happier.

Thats a bunch of BS to excuse themselves from working their Lazy asses. What the heck do these employees think themselves to be.?? ..James Bond..??
And RogueTitan7..Since you are the NBR HP team can you please update us on when we can have a Full Official Review of this Model on NBR..?? Thanks. -
LOL dude..
-
My Envy 17 has been shipped right now!
I ordered in June 24th and I'm kinda surprised that it shipped in only 6 days.
It should be here by next Tues-Weds, so I'm happy!
Hopefully it doesn't have any defects.. -
Yeah, we need some official driver support love from AMD, asap. For what it's worth, the switching is still wonky. I've got it to work in some games, and it's amazing. Stable and cool with a modest overclock too. In other games, I still haven't got it to switch. Kinda disheartening to not be sure which card will kick in.
-
I doubt he has anymore answers than the rest of us. Here is what NBR (Note Book Review) team means and who can be one.

Any one have their unit "ship" on the 28th and the tracking says something other than it's in Shanghai ? Seems to be there forever?
-
nope mine is taking its sweet time also.
-
-
Same for mine too.
I'm wondering if they assembled our computers a week or two ago, put them off on the side, and somehow forgot about them. How else would they able to ship so many computers, and clear out a huge backlog in 1 day ? Now, they have to ship all these units, and FedEx has a logjam on their hands.
The saga continues.... -
All HP Envy's that shipped yesterday through today will be received on or around Tueday/Thursday. Please post to all if your WiDi (Wireless Display) works. I'm curious if the new batch of computers are fixed as promised. Hopefully next Friday we will all have new information on how HP is operating.
Check this out:

It kind of explains why the quality control is out of control.
