I installed them last night, seems good so far. Played 20-30 minutes of the Torchlight II demo, didn't blink. Hardly a game to beat on the 7850M, though it didn't cause any issues.

There's a setting at the bottom of the CCC that gives you a simple selection for battery vs plug-in.

there seems to be some sort of refresh going on and there's a new model introduced, envy dv7t.

it looks nothing like the previous envy 17t with windows7 and the only model left is the 3D version.

Looks like a plain old pavillion dv7t, looks like they could be discontinuing our Envy series, which would be a shame, the pavillion barely compares.

Agreed. The Pavilion is nice, but more bulky, and the build quality is not as high. I had one in August/September and returned it due to build quality issues and got an Envy 17.

Can the non-3d version of the Envy 32xx with the 7850m be overclocked with MSI afterburner? I cannot seem to find a way to do so within the tool.

Envy 17 has been discontinued, both 3D and non-3D. Just got off the phone w/ HP. Quite a shame, cause I was just about to order one. T.T

Why the hell would they do that F**k, now i dont seem to have an option lenovo ideapad y500 it is. The envy was quite perfect for college and gaming but i wanted to compare. I hate my self for not buying it earlier. Hp is garbage they lost there best laptop. The only one left is the 3d and i dont think they have fixed the graphic switching problem or have them?

$20 bucks says they're starting to refresh the premium models with Windows 8. By premium I mean Envy 15 & 17. maybe with touch capabilities... They probably took them down so customers don't order the old version with Windows 7...

Lets hope you are right about these, not that touch will make them better only raise the price. It would be awesome to see a some GPU upgrade or more GPU ram 2gb ddrr5.
I wonder how the gtx 655m comperes to this card. Thats the card in the new Ideapad y500 wich will future sli removable gpu

Can some one with the non 3d version tell me how is their battery life. Let say for collage ?

I like how they replaced "Pavilion" with "ENVY" for the dv6 and dv7; not confusing at all to the general customers </sarcasm>.

I'm thinking that they are dumbing down the entire lineup for non-tech people, so now everything they sell (aside from the Elitebook line) is media-consumption/touch oriented/ultrabook.

I would love the touchscreen option more than 3D for sure...specially with windows 8.

I guess all we can do is hope.

Can anyone recommend or have bought a 2nd power brick for a 17-32XX CTO?

Would like to make sure I get something big enough to handle this beast.

My guess is that they discontinue this body style entirely. (fingers crossed that they don't)

    Evidence:
    1) The 15's are gone as well as the 17's
    2) The marketing name ENVY is now on higher end DV6's & DV7's, while the lower end ones are Pavilion.

    Theory:
-- People are buying little laptops now a days, or at least that's what HP thinks it ought to be focused on.
-- In the market defined by little laptops, the obvious business move is to consolidate body design frameworks (and end user SKU's) of the larger ones, while cashing in (at least a bit) on the brand name you've built.

OK, if I don't want to pay $20 for 3dmark2011 and I've already run Furmark, what other benchmarking tools do you all recommend?

    Hello everyone,

I received my (non-3d) HP Envy 17 3200 earlier this week. Looks like I've gotten one of the last ones for now, as they're no longer up for sale on the HP web site. I had a couple questions-

    1. Should I update my AMD drivers? I have the only drivers that came with my laptop.

    2. If I update my drivers, will my graphics switching break? Right now it seems to be working fine. I played some Team Fortress 2 on maximum settings and ran quite well.

    3. Any tips on battery life? Depending on what I am doing my estimated battery life time seems to vary greatly. Internet browsing with Pandora running I was getting an estimated 2 hours. If I close Pandora and browse, it looks like 4-5 hours. Does Flash really eat up that much battery?

    4. Any other tips or tricks I should know about for my new laptop?

    Thanks everyone, cheers!

Updating drivers will not cause issues unless you completely remove the original ones, they are necessary for the Intel GPU, I would recommend installing application profiles to allow for better finetuning of your preferred GPU for applications. Run on Power Saver and tweak the timers to your liking, it will prevent the unit from turbo boosting and have it run at a flat 1.2ghz per core, more than enough for general browsing and simple tasks, that will save a lot of power as the CPU wattage will drop down drastically, lower brightness settings as well. Not sure about lowering power usage with Pandora, maybe reduce the power to the wifi card.

I don't know about Computer Upgrade King. They're selling the same ones on Ebay, except where they're labeled as open box and no HP warranty. For those of you looking, I found some links to reputable online stores that still have the Envy 17. Personally, I ordered the 3290 from BH Photo, 'cause it came out the cheapest after CA tax. Honestly though, I wouldn't spend more than ~1500 on a 3D model and even less on a non-3D. If anyone is still in the market for an Envy, you might want to keep an eye on them. There's a pretty good chance they will go on clearance soon after getting EOL'd.

BH Photo has the Envy 17 3290 (3D) for $1520+NY tax.
PC Mall has the Envy 17 3270 (non-3D) for $1410+CA tax.
Amazon has the 3290 for 1470+tax in a bunch of states.
Beach Camera has the 3290 for 1600+NJ tax.
PC Connection might have some, have to give them a call though.

edit: I wonder though, what will HP do if we send an Envy in for warranty service. If they give me a ty dv7 as a replacement, I'm going to get pissed.

For those of us who were looking to get the pre-DVx series envy's...did HP finally address the enduro/switching graphics fiasco? I really wanted the envy but started looking elsewhere when I discovered that AMD borked enduro across many models of notebooks (not just HP).

What is the final solution HP put in place? Just drivers? Bios?

I feel HP made this switch to ditch the enduro problem all together.

    Thanks!

Sent from my super awesome phone thingy.

AFAIK Enduro works fine for non-3D models. AMD released driver fixes. 3D models got shafted pretty hard though, the switching doesn't work at all because of the 120hz screen, so you're stuck on the 7850 permanently and have to deal with poor battery life. That also means WIDI and all the stuff that depend on the integrated chip don't work.

The only time that might happen would be a complete system replacement if they couldn't fix it for some reason because of lack of parts. I would be very surprised if that happened with an Envy 17.

Yes, and the only issue I am having is I cannot adjust the screen brightness level. It seems to be a common problem with the Intel HD 4000 drivers.

I'm in the same boat! Not sure if I want to wait or go back to Win 7 - the high brightness is killing my battery as I usually keep the screen on the 1st or 2nd brightness level.

I very rarely use the battery but even on wall power I like the screen brightness one or two notches down from the top. My eyes! My eyes!!!

Considering downgrading back to Windows 7 as well.

See if this registry key exists.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001]

If not, see if this Dword exists in your registry (do a search):
    FeatureTestControl

If it exists, find the value. If not, you need to wait for HP SG drivers, or try Leshcat unofficial drivers.

If it exists, go back to Windows 7 and get the value for that Dword as well.

Edit: Some more research shows that the value used for HP SG does not work for any other.

I already changed it to the value suggested in earlier threads so I don't know what the original value was. I'll just have to wait for a driver update.

In spite of the brightness control issue, I am a bit more comfortable in Win8 now. I found I was really missing the Start menu so I downloaded and installed Start8 and it is helping me feel better. ;)

I just got my Envy 17 replaced since they did not have the motherboard in stock.
I got my new one a week ago after 2 months wait almost. perhaps that should have been a warning sign as this model being replaced.
considering this model is discontinued they wont spend more time making it friendly for Windows 8 ..at least not a priority

I had access to the windows 8 early when the rtm go released to the manufacturers so i upgraded then.I spoke to a customer rep a month ago because i was having issues with the switchable graphics problem and he said that there will be a solution but most likely not until 2 months after windows 8 release. I couldn't wait three months at tht point so I just downgrade back to windows 7 and am patiently waiting for them to put out the appropriate drivers.
