If you still have the recovery partition and hp tools entact then you should be fine.

No brightness adjustment is a deal-breaker for me; that would destroy my battery life. Since I'm hauling this thing back and forth to school, I need the battery life.
I say give it a week and we'll have our fix, either from HP or somebody else. -
-
I'm ready to buy this laptop from amazon but i was wondering if any of you have dealt with square trade warranty is it good?

Just score P3459 on 3DMark 11 with the latest beta drivers running Windows 8.
AMD Radeon HD 7850M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1853 score: P3459 3DMarks
Yep same issue as others, no brightness control and only get about 2.5 hours battery. Hopefully a fix will come soon. -
Where do I get the beta drivers. Some how I can't get anything to install.
-

Thanks, for some reason I can't get them to work.
-
I might have got one of their last Envy 17 3D laptops. It's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.... Funny thing is that I tried to cancel it, but as you know, cancelling something with HP is impossible, so I will just have them deliver it, and then return it for a refund.
-
Why don't you want it any more?
-
For some reason I've noticed after installing the latest beta drivers that my computer won't restart anymore. When I select restart from the start menu, it starts to shut down like normal but once everything is shut down just black screens and sits there.
-
Same issue here with the brightness control not working after upgrading to windows 8.. I went back to windows 7.. Can't take the brightness .

I made one order for an Envy 17 3200 non-3D back in July and wanted to change the drive configuration the next day. According to the CS reps I spoke with, the order was already in production and they would need to place a new order and cancel the old one. Ended up temporarily with double charges for the two orders, though it eventually worked itself out. -
Lol, went ahead and installed it. Too tempting. Guess I'll just be lugging my charger back and forth for a little while
-
My graphics drivers won't install for some reason... I tried the ones given on the last page, but they won't install. When I restart after running the install, it gives me "no AMD Driver Intalled" popup.
AMD Catalyst
That's what I'm talking about. Which one did you guys with windows 8 install, and how?
EDIT:
It works now! Don't know why it didn't before. -
Just scored P2981 with 3DMark 11 without any overclocking.

Omg... I've been playing Need For Speed: Most Wanted for the past 4 hours straight.... It's amazing. Guess i'll have to make a video for y'all. It seems that with ALL HIGH settings the game locks itself at 20fps (playable, but you'll find yourself hitting more things driving in someone's dirt trail), and 30fps with ALL MEDIUM settings (better).
Overall graphics are awesome. I'll be searching out the game's soundtrack, a good variety of music that plays well on my Envy's speakers. Heads up 3D doesn't work too well, if at all with this game.
-Via FRAPS
EDIT: forgot to say menus were at 60fps. Maybe it would do more in game too, idk, i have my laptop set to 60Hz instead of 120. Perhaps that's why Tridef didn't do much -

Hi folks. I just wanted to let everyone know that I had to return my Envy 17-3200 CTO to HP because of a bad keyboard. I ended up then ordering a refurbished Envy 17-3270 one from ComputerUpgradeKing.com and it is great (~$250 cheaper). The only negative is that they don't include the Adobe software license keys even though that software comes pre-installed on the Envy, but I can go to GIMP and the like to replace that. Thought this feedback might be useful for anyone considering a refurb.

Happy Halloween everybody... I will be gifting away two copy's of Left 4 Dead 2 only in the HP Envy Forums...
The only requirements are.
1, Pick a # between 1-20. (Only one # allowed per user...)
I have two #s in mind so if you guess right then you win a copy... I will send gifts around 12:00 central time... I am not playing favorites here so everybody has a chance to win as long as you follow the requirements...
I'm posting this in both Envy 15 and 17 forums. So if more than 1 user says the same #. I will chose the person that says it first.

Problem. I switched off action keys in the bios. Now I can't get back into it on startup. I've mashed Esc 8 times, and it still starts booting windows instead of showing the startup menu. -_-
Oh I've tried fn+Esc too... Help?
EDIT: I got it.... Held it down as soon as I pressed the power button. Whew...

I pick #8.
Just got my Envy 17 3D today from BH Photo. Came in perfect condition. I'll have to play with drivers and overclocking later. The headphone output is ridiculously noisy though, I'm getting so much static from that thing. I know that somebody had mentioned that, but does nobody else have this problem? -
Halloween is officially over and so is this contest. The lucky #s were 8 and 18. Thank you to all that participated in this little contest...
Congrats to lvx for getting #8...

Warranty is 90 days for the machine. I think people either like refurbs or they don't. I personally get electronics all the time this way. Even with the QC problems HP has, whatever is going to break will ship broken or break almost immediately. Plus the factory refurb gets an extra check over to make sure all is well. -

Also, what temperatures are you all getting? I'm hitting 87c on the CPU (3610QM) at full load. And how do you overclock the GPU and look at it's temps? MSI Afterburner doesn't let me OC or look at temps.
edit: Looks like I'm going as high as 95c on the CPU with a combined CPU and GPU load. I'm beginning to think that the sensors are reporting bs data with the way the numbers are jumping around. -

problem is when you puy the HP laptop from anywhere but HP.. HP does not let you add the warranty on it , so what you got is what you got.
they sold me warranty on a laptop I bought on another side but when it came time to exchange it under warranty they refused since the laptop warranty was not valid, they just refunded the price I paid for the care pack. -
So I already bought this laptop in amazom form ComputersKings i think refurbished today. I wanted to put square trade so i bought the 2- year accidetal warranty but when i call today to ask something thy told that it dos not cover refurbished products unless they are bought in ebay. Is there a way to fool them and say its new or from ebay. Some one with experience
-
for ebay items they need the item number and the condition of the item would be listed under the item number on ebay
-
And if i try to say its new from amazon
-
You would no doubt need the receipt from Amazon.
-
Dam do any of you no where i can get a good warranty for a refurbished laptop. I hate hp why did they had to take the envy line out now i dont have no warranty. If that is the case then is a no buy for me. I will have to cancel. I was so exited for this beast.

The game plays very smooth at 30FPS on High Settings at 1080p with Shadows on off and I think Ambient Occasion set to off as well. I also found a tweak online to force the game to lock at 30FPS. The game play is very smooth and the graphics are amazing. I will be uploading a video on this game soon......
-
thanks for sharing. what do you think of the NFS Most Wanted game play? I find the controls (ie. steering) uncontrollable. I used the xbox 360 controller and still hard to control. NFS The Run was more controllable.
