Do you enjoy the game so far. And what's the rarest car you have found so far...

I love it so far, but then this is the first racing game i've ever played on PC. Rarest? I'm not sure, i'll have to look next time i go through my list of cars; that being said, i haven't yet unlocked any new parts of the city yet.

Ok, i thought it was just me. Steering sucks big time on Most Wanted and that's with the Xbox 360 and Microsoft receiver. I also tried my Logitech Forcefeedback wireless, it was better but can't figure out how to do the burn outs, accelerate and brake at the same time, seems like the wheel only registers one button press at a time, you can't do 2 button press at the same timnot really enjoying Most Wanted not like The Run. The Run got me hooked to the point I finished the game!

For the people that installed Windows 8 on their envy. My track pad and keyboard do not work at all. I mean the keyboard will work but you have to press the key like 5 times. My track pad doesn't work at all and it's frustrating. I'm guessing it's driver related. Where would I go to get drivers to make it work. I tried for like an hour just pressing tab just to get in to control panel and updating with windows update but that didn't work...

Did you do an upgrade or clean install? Even if drivers weren't present from HP they should work in a basic format. At the very least for the keyboard anyway. There is no keyboard driver to update.

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59085.exe for clickpad.

Looks like I have dust particles trapped behind the glass cover..this sucks.

Anyone else have this issue? Is it covered in the 2 year warranty?

I don't think I have that issue, though unless you cracked open the display lid, it should be covered under warranty.

Would you mind snapping a pic to show what it is, so the rest of us can keep a lookout for it?

If your touchpad goes crazy after updating to WIndows 8 then rollback or install new touchpad drivers from Synaptics/HP. It also effects the keyboard, it auto updated and those two stopped working properly.

I had my Display Assembly replaced because somehow i accidentally squished a small gnat/fly between the screen and the LCD panel. I did in-home repair which took 2.5 weeks because they first sent the wrong part (regular instead of 3D).

Which reminds me, i took plenty of picks of my Envy while it was torn apart disassembled. I'll post them later today for curious eyes to see.

I installed Windows 8. Looking good so far except for my screen brightness. When i toggle the screen brightness button (increase-F3/decrease-F2) i see the heads up display dial moving but the screen does not darken nor brighten..looks like it stays at 100% brightness. I need to lower my brightness specially when i'm editing photos. Any help? Thanks.

Yes, please post! I'll probably give them a call to get it fixed. It's 2-3 small very fine particles of dust. It's not a dead pixel though. They're annoying....

I also have something between my screen and glass. Looks like a little scratch on the inside, or maybe just a dust particle.

I updated the guide after having installed Windows 8 myself (it was originally only tested on Windows 7). Need to replace the "f940" entries in the reg file with "ffff" and apply that for brightness to work on Windows 8.

    #EDIT: Here's a pre-modified reg file: http://www.sendspace.com/file/15up82

    You're welcome ;)

Now we just need to yell at HP and Intel for providing bad default values in the GPU drivers. We shouldn't have to modify the registry to get basic driver functionality to work in the first place.

No it was the brightness fix for Windows 8. My battery was suffering because it was on maximum brightness all the time... I always use the lowest brightness possible...

MacHater, thanks for the guide, but I'm not getting it to work. Here's exactly what I did.

    1. Uninstalled AMD Catalyst Install Manger. Went into device manager and uninstalled the intel graphics and the 7850m drivers.
    2. Rebooted into safe mode. Ran Driver Sweeper and cleaned the AMD drivers. Were there any other drivers I should've cleaned?
    3. Rebooted. Installed the Intel drivers you recommended. Ran the the reg fix. Rebooted.
    4. Installed the AMD 12.11 beta6. Rebooted twice.

Still not working when I try to lower brightness

Well, my saga with HP support regarding the botched Eyefinity implementation has come to an end. HP flatly refused a full refund. At best they could offer a pro rated refund since it was past the 21 day return period.

They tried to look for a different product and offer a replacement, but there are literally no laptops in their current lineup (or any other manufacturer's lineup for that matter) that would support Eyefinity and still perform well as a thin and relatively light gaming laptop.

So I took a 4 year on-site warranty with accidental damage protection.

I will build a desktop for my Eyefinity needs next Spring/Summer when Haswell comes out. In the mean time, the Envy 17 will do almost everything I purchased it to do. I still enjoy the laptop immensely, I just wished it supported a major feature it was advertised to do and which 3 generations of Envy 17's had managed to do. It's a shame HP released a product without testing Eyefinity support. It's an even bigger shame they decided to discontinue the lineup and roll the Envy branding into the DV series. The DV series isn't even a comparable class of products.

    RIP Envy 15/17's.
