Is may be just me but using Windows 8 gives me like an extra half hour battery life. I'm starting to like Windows 8 more and more... Now the big question is should I remove Windows 7 and stay on Windows 8. I'm dual booting them...

We're looking for separate displays rather than one large virtual monitor split across physical ones, though I'm sure that will be adequate for some people, nice catch. Wouldn't use it for games anyway, you would have horrible framerates with any sort of modern game at high settings, demanding modern game that is.

My keyboard backlight isn't coming on after computer wakes from sleep even when I use the keyboard. Anyone know how to fix this? I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro and I thought this was working but it's having issue now. I have to hit the f5 key twice to get it to come on since first one shuts it off since it thinks it's on.

    Thanks.

By chance I think I got my keyboard backlight not coming back on after sleep/hibernation fixed. I had upgrade the display drivers to newer and noticed that display brightness was not working anymore even with the fix that was talked on about on this forum. So I reinstalled the HP's display drivers and now both the brightness as well as the keyboard backlight work as expected.

But I noticed HP's driver doesn't work with Netflix App on Windows 8. I get the W8158 error. I got it to work by changing to the driver that Microsoft supplied (WDDM V1.20) but now after reinstalling the HP driver it doesn't seem to work anymore either way.

Anyone getting issues with low frame rates? In world of warcraft i'm getting like 15 fps in crowded cities and outside around high 20s to 30. I have the updated drivers/bios and also made sure the switchable graphics was set to 'high performance' with this game. Mine is a i7 with 16gb ram running on a Crucial 512gb SSD hard drive.

My i5 ati 7770 with 8gb is running this game at 50+ fps so i'm trying to figure out why this is happening.

I changed the resolution down a notch but it only bumped up the fps a little bit.

My old xps 17 l701 ran this game better than this envy. Anyone have any advice?

I had it working with Microsoft's AMD 7800 Series driver (WDDM 1.20). This driver was already on my Windows 8 probably through the windows update. Just had to do update driver and select driver on my computer option.

But now even that driver gives me the W8158 error in Netflix app after I reinstalled HP Video drivers. You can just use the browser to use the Netflix and that will work. I prefer to have my brightness adjustment and keyboard backlight to work so I'm just going to use the HP supplied video drivers. Not sure why video driver is impacting the keyboard backlight function...

Still having problems trying to clone the OS from a larger HDD to a smaller SSD.

I've shrunk the partition to something that fits into the ssd (256GB) then use clonezilla, easeus and even the plextor ssd's included cloning software (Nti ez backup). But nothing seems to work.

intially clonezilla manages to clone the image but the OS doesnt load from the ssd. after trying easeus and nti ez backup, i tried clonezilla and this time round it says it cant create partition within the HDD (refering to the plextor ssd)

then i tried easeus repeatedly and all the time it tells me the cloning has been successful and I see from My Computer where all the drives are properly sized. but still it doesnt boot and tells me no boot device installed.

tried nti software and it too, manage to complete the cloning process and I see some files inside the SSD but it doesnt boot as well.

Envy 17 2xxx owner here. We faced a similar situation where a game would suddenly slow down or never even reach the full potential to begin with. It was a throttling issue to deliberately keep down the heat. A later BIOS patch by HP addressed this after much uproar.

Having said this, make sure that CoolSense is off since that also throttles the CPU.

    Hi,

I somehow accidentally put some water on my HP Envy 32XX 17" touchpad, and it immediately started acting weird.
I shut down the laptop and tried to dry the touchpad, but it has been 4 days and the touchpad continues to act weirdly, like a touch is hold somehow.
My touchpad now performs random clicks and cursor moves without been touched, and when I touch it it either moves in the wrong direction or don't move at all. I clearly can't use it.

I bought the laptop on the HP US web store, but I am currently in France and this is hard for me to send my laptop to the US, and waiting something like a month is not possible as I'm using this laptop for work.
However I could pay for a quick repair, if needed.

What can I do? Has this happened to anybody?

EDIT: Solved! I finally totally disassembled my laptop (hundreds of screws btw), tried to dry the touchpad from behind, unplugged the battery as well as the CMOS, and it now works just great!

Anyone know where I can get a OEM hard drive caddy for the second bay on ENVY17-3200? I looked on eBay but didn't see anything specific for ENVY17-3200.

Sure, NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks ... but if you plan on an SSD, you don't really 'need' a caddy. A little foam will hold it in place... The cable is already there. Not sure if the caddy for drive #0/drive #1 are the same, but I DO KNOW you can move the boot drive to either bay, and things just WORK!

NOTE Bay #0 is 6GB/sec (SATA III) and Bay #1 is only 3GB/sec (SATA II)

Thanks. So you are saying I could use the SSD drive in Bay #0 without the caddy and use the factory caddy in Bay #1? I can give this a try.

That is what I am saying... I would give it a try. I DID buy the caddy (before knowing), but my HD(boot) is in Bay #1 and my SSD is in Bay #0, which may seem a little strange, but I need a fast device to write to... the HD (hybrid) is fast enough for my OS purposes.

I would strongly recommend springing the money for the caddy from NewModeUS. It'll keep the SSD securely mounted as it should be.

I got the SSD secured with a piece of padding to make it snug against the bay. I'll try it for a bit. It shouldn't be any issues since SSD doesn't have any moving parts.

After doing a fresh Windows 8 install I'm noticing 1 unknown device. Anyone know what it could be?

Hello, I just got this laptop a few days ago (non 3D version). I want to hook up 2 external monitors using the display port outputs. I have my 2 monitors hooked up but can only select the internal monitor and 1 of them at a time, I can't turn on all 3 at once. I have read that people are having problems with 3 external monitrs plus the built in one (even though the spec sheet says that this should work) but there has been talk of what I'm trying to do working. How do you do it?

Also, what is this "Eyefinity" I see referenced to? I can't find it on my laptop. Is this what I need?

Remember guys, even Alienware M17x with 3D does not have IGP support; therefore no switchable graphics (Optimus or Enduro) support either. The reason is, the 3D models of these machines have the monitor directly connected to the dGPU; this has to be done since the IGP does not have support for the 3D protocol that NVIDIA/AMD uses or 120 Hz screens.

MacHater, why do you have an 8870M listed in your sig? Is it just a joke because the 8800 series are just rebrands or something?

PS: Nice overclocks. How'd you get em so high?

Anyone else noticing that the wireless button doesn't work when you press it? I moved to Windows 8 and haven't really had a problem, just little things here and there that annoy me.
