I have a set of this in my Envy 17:
    G.SKILL Model F3-1600C11D-16GSQ Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

Works like a champ and passed the 24hr+ test with MemTest x86+ with no errors. Has been in use since early September, no issues at all.

Had two sets of this Corsair RAM fail the MemTest x86+ testing:
CORSAIR Vengeance Model CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 Laptop Memory - Newegg.com (one as the kit/set listed here and one set made up of two single module items)

Other people have had the Corsair RAM above work without any issue.

I really hope you ran MemTest x86+ on that RAM for at least 8-12 hours, if not 24 hours.

I bought two of those kits and had neither one pass MemTest x86+ 4.20. One failed in less than 8 hours, the other one failed in less than one hour. I changed over to the G.Skill CL11 kit I have mentioned in my signature and it's been working great.

Thanks for the feedback. I did run that but I'm not sure for how long. Maybe 4 hours or so. There wasn't any errors so I stopped it.

If you can take the time, I'd suggest running it for the 24 hours if you could, though at least 12.

I know if I ran my first Corsair kit only 4 hours, it would have passed. I think it was about 6-6.5 hours that it fired off its first error.

without a touchscreen... stick with win7... even WITH a touchscreen, "I" would still want the option to revert to win7 ... which they aren't so anxious to allow... unless you pay up.

I was personally so pissed when I got Windows 8 because I didn't know that it consumed the Windows 7 license, and I ended up having to repartition my drive and it was a mess... BUT, after using Windows 8 for a couple of weeks now, Im sort of glad for the fresh start not to mention that the Envy's touchpad works wonders with Windows 8's interface. You can just swipe from the right to bring up the start bar, or swipe from the left to go back and most of the previous gestures work like the 4 finger swipe (except only after desktop mode has been started). The ability to close things by dragging them to the bottom of the screen is also very pleasant, as well as being able to monitor small things like read/write speed when copying and moving files. However, some warnings and disclaimers for you if you decide to do it. Internet Explorer 10 is horrible for low-internet connection users, it often wont let you open new tabs until the one your on is done AND opening the address bar and tabs is downright stupid for some sites because it uses the right click button (which in itself isn't that pleasant on the Envy) and if on heavily-media sites you'll be struggling to find a place to press to bring it up. The options for right clicking are also skimmed down to the point where it annoying, be ready to relearn many of the thins you used to be able to do with right click. Of course you can just use the version of IE included in desktop mode or another browser. Also, if you didn't purchase the full version of office and opted for the "starter" versions... you'll be terrified to learn there is no equivalent for Windows 8 besides wordpad which is terrible, so be ready to invest another 150$ if you don't have Office. But, overall i'm happy with it, the learning curve really isn't much at all (though I do have a windows phone) and once you learn it there's a lot of things which are much easier to do and to access through the new start screen and a lot of other tricks to be found throughout the interface. (Still haven't gotten that beats button to work though!!!)

so just bought a brand new hp envy 17-3277nr.
    made recovery dvds
got an ssd and installed it in the first hd slot and moved the original hd to the second slot.

i want to install win 7 on the ssd and create hp recovery partition on the 2nd (original) hd

both drives were formatted so i lost the original recovery partition :(

everytime i use the recovery dvds, win 7 does install to the ssd but no recovery partition is created on either drive
it did create an hp_tools partition on the ssd, about 100mb, but its empty.

    any suggestions?
    thanks

update: so i got the recovery partition created on the 2nd hd and have win 7 installed on ssd.

only thing now is that when i try to start up hp recovery manager it doesn't detect the recovery partition cause it is not on the ssd.

is there a way for me to 'connect' it so it can find the recovery partition on the 2nd hd?

also what is usually in the hp tools partition? mine is empty

You should update to the latest BIOS, then install this thing called "HP Wireless button": ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59835.exe
    Things will be alright.
My ENVY 17 is happy together with Win 8 without any issues at the moment.

Within my experiences, if I were you, I will make a backup of Windows RIGHT AFTER installing from the recovery DVD (TrueImage, Ghost, etc.). This way you can have an original licensed HP's Windows 7 backup and it's ready for restoring anytime. So, the recovery partition is now no more important. Actually, I have a problem just like yours, the software "HP Recovery Manager" found nothing in my HDD, and it became rubbish. Trust me, I've done what I tell you above! :)
Update: the HP TOOLS partition is a pack of diagnostic tools that uses UEFI environment to check system's health. You can delete it. To me, I don't delete the partition, I just leave it peace in my SSD - the same disk with the Windows partitions (C: and System Reserved). I just shrink it from nearly 2GB down to 100MB. And everything's OK now.

    Happy Monday!

After reading the last 100 pages of this thread, the outcome of the i7 3rd Gen + AMD 7850M w/3D issues with multiple monitors and switchable HD4000 graphics support faded away. Reading another huge thread in the 3DRage forums up to Jan 2013 indicated the Catalyst Mobility 13.1 drivers solved the HD7xxxM performance issues. I have yet to read about anyone specifically mentioning HD7850M + 3D display and any of the above problems.

Anyone still reading this thread know if the HD7850M 3D Enduro<->HD4000 graphics switching was fixed? Or the HD7850M 3D support for multiple monitors? I appreciate any advice here about pulling the trigger on an HP ENVY 17 3D or lowering the bar to HP ENVY 17 non-3D.

    Thank you, CG...

since my envy 17 3d 1195ea seems to be dying, i would like to go for an envy 17 (preferably 3d, since desktop replacement and hence no need for widi or switchable graphics) 3200.
    heres my thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-probably-dead-cpu-any-way-get-17-3200-a.html

any ideas whether the envy 17-3200 is still purchasable anywhere from HP directly? id relly like one, but i cannot find them anywhere, especially not within europe. id even pay for a replacement of my current envy by HP..
    thanks

The problem still exists for the Non 3D Eyefinity not functioning properly. I have one and it looks like this issue is not fixable with software. I think HP screwed up on the hardware side. I assume that the 3D versions still have their problems, but am not entirely sure. Sorry

This is what I love about the Envy series, they get priority for work. When they get them into the shop, they jump to the front of the line. I once had to get my screen replaced on an HDX (Envy's replaced HDX) due to a scratch caused by the keyboard, sent it in on Monday, got it back fully repaired on Thursday.

Enduro (the graphics switching system on AMD GCN) still has its share of issues.

But 99% of its issues with DirectX 9 games and applications are solved with:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...7800-7900-8500-8600-8700-8800-8900m-gpus.html

No more underutilization. Always 99+% GPU utilization on DirectX 9 games and apps.

DirectX 10 and 11 applications (like Battlefield 3) still has some underutilization issues, but not as nearly as severe as it was prior to Catalyst 12.11 beta.

I need help with something. My WiFi button is not working like it should. What i mean is when i press the f12 key (which is the WiFi key) the light doesn't change color. I can't turn off the WiFi signal anymore. I honestly don't know what's wrong with it and I'm not sure when this started. Does anybody know what might be the cause of this. Would I need to re install the drivers for this? Can somebody link me to the correct drivers for the WiFi.

Exactly. I was dual booting Windows 7/8 until I got comfortable using just Windows 8. I'm pretty sure the button was working fine then. After I removed Windows 7 from my SSD and just kept Windows 8 as my main OS. The button just stopped working. My WiFi signal might drop once or twice and the only way to fix my signal is to right click the WiFi icon and click troubleshoot problems. I hope somebody knows a fix for this problem.

The WiFi button had stopped working at mine at some point after I installed Windows 8, its been a long time so I don't quite remember, but I believe that it was "fixed" by an update (EDIT: I think it was a BIOS update) through the HP Support Assistant. Now the button turns on and off Airplane mode.

So after a couple of days dealing with HP on this issue. They told me I have two options. One was to open the bottom plate and disconnect and reconnect the WiFi antenna. After I did that they gave me two files to install. One was the driver for the actual WiFi device and the other file was an update to the Bios. They assured me this would fix the issue. After I did all these steps, it didn't fix the problem. The other choice they gave me was to send in the whole laptop and they would replace the whole WiFi antenna. I'm not sure this would fix the issue because it worked fine when I had Windows 7. I'm convinced this issue has to do with Windows 8. I can't remember when this started because I never paid attention to it. I'm going to try and re install Windows 8 from scratch and see if this fixes the issue.

Sorry for the late reply. I re installed Windows 8 and installed all the latest drivers but all this didn't fix it. I'm going to get my battery replaced and my WiFi antenna so hopefully that fixes the issue.

as advertised the AMD 7850m Catalytic Centre is supposed to support AMD EYEFINITY as advertised with the ability to connect more than 1 monitor (or more than 2 monitors) simultaneously
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:29 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
So are you trying to connect another two monitors to the notebook along with the notebook LCD which makes it three display alrogether?
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:29 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
    altogether*
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:29 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:

[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:30 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I have tried all the AMD listed Display port to HDMI/VGA/DVI active and passive adaptors and none work
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:30 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
    yes that is correct
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:31 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I have also updated all my drivers in accordance with the HP website. All is up to date.

HP Envy 17 3xxx - multiple displays not working - HP Support Forum - 1747631
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:33 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
that is the hp support thread on this issue - where there has been no solution for nearly a year from HP.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:34 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
    Let me check
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:39 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
So it seems there is one HDMI and DIsplay port for the external monitors on the right side of the notebook.Right?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:40 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
there is one HDMI and 2 Display ports correct
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:40 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I have read over 300 pages of forums and apparently HP has no fix for this multiple screen mishap.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:40 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
So are you using the display port on the monitor or are you using any other port on the monitor?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:42 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I wish to have my laptop monitor, my display port connected to an HDMI monitor and another HDMI monitor via the HDMI port, making it 3 screens
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:44 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
The Intel 4000 control panel only allows for 2 screens. However the AMD eyefinity is supposed to allow for more but the Catalyst Control Center (the panel used to configure the AMD graphics card) is a stripped down version. I have spoken with AMD and they cannot understand why HP has done this and have also found many MANY people with this problem with this laptop
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:44 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
The display port on the notebook will only work if you have a separate monitor which also has a display port with a display cable.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:45 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
I am afraid you will not be allowed to use any convertor in between.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:45 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I have tried this as well and it still does not work. There is no option in the AMD Control panel for multiple displays
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:46 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Do you have a monitor that has a separate display port on it right now with you?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:47 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Yes. I have tried that - I can only run TWO monitors simultaneously and not 3
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:47 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Can you please provide me with the model number of that monitor with the display port that you have?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:47 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
my laptop + DP works fine or HDMI plus DP works fine or HDMI + Laptop. But not all 3
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:48 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Can you please provide me with the model number of that monitor with the display port that you have?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:48 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:

Please click on start and on the search box type in "devmgmt.msc" wait for 5 seconds and press enter.
Then click on the plus sign beside "display adaptor" in order to expand it and let me know what are the drop downs listed there?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:50 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Will there be another graphics software update with functionality to configure multiple displays in the AMD control Center? I cant seem to configure it
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:51 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
    Yes
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:51 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
When will this be released? The last one was April last year i think

Answer the question that hundreds of people that have the same laptop as I do have been asking for a year
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:53 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
I am afraid it will be real soon but we do not have the exact information.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:53 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:

[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:53 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:

    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:54 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Did you also update the bios?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:54 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
It does not work. When is HP going to release a New AMD CCC so that what they advertise will work???? IT IS BULL that HP are FALSE ADVERTISING
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:54 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
    YES!
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:55 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
In that case I would suggest you to send the notebook for a free repair.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:55 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
    Its not broken?????????
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:55 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
I understand but we need to repair the video card.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:55 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
HP issued every SINGLE ENVY 17t3200 CTO with the same thing. IT IS NOT BROKEN
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:56 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
It seems that we need to repair the video card for which you can send the notebook for a free repair. So would you like to send it for a repair?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:56 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Okay. How is this. Since I bought the laptop a year ago or so, I have moved to South Africa. HP must send someone to collect the laptop from South AFrica and issue me with a laptop till my envy is fixed.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:57 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
I am not paying anything more or waiting for anything more as I spent over a thousand dollars on FALSE ADVERTISING
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:58 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Martin in that case you can either take the notebook to the nearest HP repair centre in South Africa or i can give you a number to call.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:58 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
    DONE THAT
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:58 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Do you think I am stupid or something???
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:58 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
In that case I would suggest you to bring the notebook to USA
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:59 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Will HP pay for my flights?
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:59 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Please by all means book it I will fly out this weekend
[Monday, July 22, 2013 6:59 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
    And my accommodation.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 6:59 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
I am afraid the shipment is free only within USA but you need to bring the notebook till USA on your own expense.
[Monday, July 22, 2013 7:00 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:

[Monday, July 22, 2013 7:00 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Will either of those fix this laptop? No
[Monday, July 22, 2013 7:01 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
HP knows that this laptop cannot be fixed. Unless they reprogram the BIOS and release new BIOS updates as well as AMD Graphics Card software Updates
[Monday, July 22, 2013 7:01 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
The problem is not with any user it is with HP
[Monday, July 22, 2013 7:01 PM] -- Martin De Freitas says:
Again. I ask. When is the new update being released.
    [Monday, July 22, 2013 7:01 PM] -- Sanjiv R says:
Martin you can also provide me with the shipping address of your friend or family living in USA and I can send a box there but till USA you must bring the notebook at your own expense.

I also have wasted hours of HP tech support time. Never asked them if they like women though.

I got a $125 coupon out of it, but had to buy more HP crap.

    Never buying HP again.

I am thinking of upgrading from Windows 7 to 8.I, have most of issues been addressed in 8/8.1 with the Envy 17 3200 (non 3D)?

    Thanks

Updated to Windows 8.1, and guess what..the dim/brightness button no longer works, again!!. The brightness/dim registry fix is gone :( This is important to me as I use this laptop editing photos. I've tried updating AMD drivers (used HP website, older version and latest from AMD website showing it's for W8.1) and applying the registry fix to no avail. Wifi button and keyboard light on/off now works though. I've wasted so much time already just to fix this stupid thing..
