While mine was shipped today, i checked their website again, and i've noticed the prices of all the Envy 14s dropped by 100 dollars!

I made it back to the exact same specs and it was 100 dollars cheaper...
I obviously don't want to waste 100 dollars, so... should i call them tomorrow asking for the 100 dollars or i'll return and reorder?

They dropped the price because the base model now has a cheaper screen. The radiance display is now a $200 upgrade. So you actually got your Envy for $100 cheaper.

AFAIK, that's not possible because it's soldered to the motherboard.

Correct, the GPU is NOT a card. Only large high end notebooks use a "card" that's called MXM. All the rest simply have a GPU that is soldered to the motherboard.

    Hello guys,

So far i've heard very few complaints about the Envy 14 reaching high temperatures. Is the build in cooling system that good?

In this case, should I spend the extra money to purchase a notebook stand w cooler?

Just got my new Envy :)

I've just got it booted and setup, but the recovery disks are getting on my nerves. Only single-layer non-RW DVDs or a 12.8gb USB disk? The few DVDs that I had that fitted, it "failed" to burn them, of course scrapping them in the process. I got 1 disk in 4 burn attempts...

Is there any reason why I'd have such a high failure rate? Disks are DVD+R Philips and Verbatim. I read that DVD-R TDK might be better.

you can't touch the computer while burning.

or else hp will go "you did something while burning, that coulda corrupted the burn, fail"

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner (or something like that)\MSIAfterburner.cfg

right click on that file, open with, choose your own thing (second radio button option), pick notepad. Scroll all the way down to like the third or 4th thing from the bottom.

    change the setting.

someone had it fixed by just doing it again.

other real way to fix it is to setup the bios right (boot from cd/dvd enabled, set cd/dvd as the first thing in the boot order, turn off hp quickweb)

yeah someone else had the issue and thought it mighta been a graphics card thing not a settings thing.

is your old win7 install still on the computer? Try swapping to the other card or something.

    @ MagusDraco...
I'm planning on trying to tweak GPU settings. Does MSI Afterburner work properly? I've tried installing AMD GPU Clock Tool and it froze my computer while trying to install. (I have the factory default ATI driver; haven't updated it to 10.7)
@ 2.0, or anyone who is willing to help...
I've made posts about my problems on pg 8.
"I have contacted HP support many times and here are the problems that were not fixed by the methods provided by HP.
    1. screen brightness control (fn + f2/f3) not working after resuming from sleep/hibernation *( the AC adapter disconnected)
*HP support suggested I update BIOS to the latest version(did not fix), also to reinstall ACPI Fixed Feature Button using Device Manager, under System devices (did not fix either).
    2. screen blinks for a second (turns black and comes back on) when right-click on the desktop background after resuming from sleep/hibernation. I don't know what the issue is. I've contacted HP support but didn't get a reply.
    3. In the BIOS setup, turning off "Fan Always On" option does nothing. Fan starts running from the push of power button."
    Thanks!

    MSI Afterburner works partially.

can't touch voltage no matter what (even if you set it to let you touch voltage) it won't get a reading.

you can mess with core and memory clocks and the fan if you want (but not sure if fan does anything..fan does get a reading but it doesn't sound like the fan gets louder on the computer if you up it from 30%)

you do have to modify something in msiafterburner.cfg

gotta go down to near the bottom and set allowunofficialoverclocking to 1 (like 4th option from the bottom)

I mean to be honest I didn't have the issue and I was plugged in the entire time and on cat 10.6 after nearly breaking the vid card a few time (never try to install cat 10.6 after rebooting with the intel disabled and then reboot with them both enabled. They fought. I lost til I managed a system restore in safe mode)

    @ Magus, again...
what was the stable/working settings for your core/memory clock? Is there an option for tweaking shader speed??

shader and core are combined for ati cards or something.

there's a shader option but it's blanked out since this isn't nvidia.

stable settings highly depends on your card. I was stable (for 10 minutes, didn't run it any longer) in furmark at 585/885 (585 was the max for core clock until we realized we could close and re-open msiafterburner while OCed to get the ability to move it farther up). Haven't really done much more to it.

game wise I've been stable at 550/800 for however long I felt like playing SC2

edit: other people are crashing at 525/800

    1. never tested it. *tests it* works waking up from sleep and hibernate.

    2. no issues.

    3. never tested, most likely doesn't turn fan off since I think this is universal across all envies. Also, dun mind since I like my fan on so my envy keeps cool on my lap.

While gaming, (Oblivion, SC2, Crysis) fans get louder than before, but not ridiculous roaring though. But the temp is scorching! Right-side/center-bottom of the screen get extremely hot. Is that okay??

that is normal. Metal gets hot. Don't touch over there.

    even when it's like 60 C it's hot.

fans get louder once you get above 74ish C for one of the parts (cpu or gpu) and on games that stress both (I'm looking at you SC2) yeah it's gonna run full blast

Anybody else having trouble with the battery discharging a lot in sleep? I had my battery at around 50% before I went to bed last night and didn't plug it in because my power brick's buzz is annoying enough to keep me up and when I turned on my computer I got a message that my battery had reached critical levels and to plug in the laptop. I've had problems where I wouldn't be able to turn the computer on from sleep without pressing the power button since a clean install, but this is the first time it said anything a/bout a critical power level. Could it just be a bad battery or something worse, I know sleep consumes power, but I've never had a laptop consume enough to drain a battery or put it into hibernation before.

Does anyone see "rainbows" on their screen when viewing at around 70 degrees or more? You know, like when you place the finger on the screen and get a rainbow effect? My second notebook has about a 2" high by 4" wide oval left of center. Trying to flex the lid some changes the pattern but does not remove it and goes back to it's original "smearing". Tried to replicate it with the first notebook and even flexing the lid does not give me a rainbow, just fingering it but it returns to normal as it should.

When will the Envy 14 be available at retail stores? How long did it take for the 13 and 15 to appear in stores after their online releases?

I asked several times in the big threads but my question was lost in translation :p

no there's no driver for the battery.

if it's at 0% wear that's amazing usually they are at like 2-3-5 percent wear when you get it from the factory.

Trying to do a clean install to Win7 Ultimate x64 in hopes of faster/bloatware-free laptop: *I've read the 1st help pg of HP Envy 14 thread but a question about partitions. I see two partitions: Local Drive and SYSTEM. (I have gotten rid of RECOVERY and HP TOOLS)
    1. Is the SYSTEM partition something I should get rid of?
    2. What's on it? (I did some research and it is something NO ONE should touch)
    3. The clean install help link didn't really help me, since it is not directly referring to HP Envy 14's. I've had issues with my old HP dm4t clean install to Win7 Ultimate and failed terribly with drivers and all so I'm trying to be sure.

*shrugs* maybe it recalculated it and got a better idea.

or maybe it lost where it was at and will re-figure it out after a few charge downs.

Unfortunately pictures or videos don't show what I'm seeing and can't post to compare. I seriously don't think waiting is going to fix it. I got it yesterday and still have it. If it were some kind of moisture (which should not be in there in the first place) it would have been gone by now. My first one didn't have it. I got off the phone with tech support and they said return it.

I will be returning it and thinking hard about giving up on the Envy because of the bad quality of two units in a row. I'm not the only one and others either don't notice the fit and finish issues or just don't care and take anything they get.

I asked CS what they could do for me as far as a third one and with their creative math, price hikes and oversight of previous discounts, they're wanting to charge me $16 MORE than the second notebook!
