Integrated graphics would be the place for memory upgrades to shine. But can the CPU really utilize the speed, or did it just show an improvement from extra GB?

Intel specs the 2520m and 2630qm for 1066 and 1333mhz memory, they don't claim that either one can control memory at 1600 or higher.

    Intel® Core? i5-2520M Processor (3M Cache, 2.50 GHz)with SPEC Code(s)SR048

    Intel® Core? i7-2630QM Processor (6M Cache, 2.00 GHz)with SPEC Code(s)SR02Y

IIRC, my memory WEI went from 7.3 to 7.6 when I upgraded a dv7 from 6GB to 8GB. I think WEI just gives you 3 tenths for the extra 2GB.

Yikes! No offense, but I hope you are wrong ;)

Yeah I think I will run some FPS test on my HDTV. I'm expecting more like a ~30% drop.

    Update:
I played Crysis 2 on my HDTV o test this out. When I play on 1366x768 on Very High I get about ~25 minimum FPS, but on 1920x1080 I get about 15 minimum FPS. Even on High (the lowest setting)the AVG FPS is still less than 30. I'm starting to rethink swapping out the screens.

I thought this might be useful for anyone else banging their head against the wall looking for a solution to the screen tearing you might be experiencing in some games with this laptop and the radeon 6770m card... in catalyst turn your anti-aliasing mode to super-sample aa...

not sure how or why that did the trick, but my games run smooth as butter now!

    How is 6770M as compared to NVIDIA 540M(XPS 15) and 555M (XPS 17) ??

    And if we compare 6770M ( 1gb ) vs 555M ( 3 GB) ?
And what about optimus vs switchable graphics on NVIDIA ??

The 6770 is about 25-30% better than the 540m and about 5-7% better than the 555m, I dont think the 3GB really makes much different.

The optimus switches more smoothly than ATI switching, but you can manually switch the ATI and the optimus pretty much decides whether it wants to or not depending on what your doing. You can force certain programs to run on either graphics card with optimus. IMO I think the ATI is a little better even though when you switch the screen goes black for a sec, I like the ability to switch it on and off as I please without having to access a bunch of menus and all that.

nope. doesn't work for me. anyway for now, the screen tearing only happens when i play crysis 2. and the screen tearing will continue to happen even after exiting the game. it only ends if i switch the graphics to Intel and then switch them back to ATI.

Do they play to make something like optimus for our lapop? Or it will need some hardware changes?

And how does this work on mac? They also have intel 3000 + ati 6*** and have switch.

I dont know if they are going to make something like optimus for our comps. I suspect it would only need a driver change and not a hardware change but I am not sure exactly.

I have no idea how it works on a mac, someone with mac experience is going to have to chime in on that one.

Indeed Intel specs state that, but some i5 sandy bridge owners confirmed that their chips can indeed run DDR3 1600Mhz and 1866Mhz memory at those speeds. It is suspected that the JEDEC certification came after production, so Intel couldn't list it in the specs officially.

You could test the fps with Fraps but I had the same issue with Far Cry where there would be these small stutters that were really annoying. This is caused when your fps drops at all which could be how dx9 helped in your case but what i do is open the console in game by pressing the ~ key, then type "gfx_maxfps 30" in there. That maxes your fps at 30 and should keep it from dropping and causing the stutters. After applying that I haven't had any issues.

At stock settings you could probably play on ultra without any AA. If AA is that important to you then you could play in dx9 with 2x AA with everything on ultra. But as for stock and 4x, I don't know I'll try it out with the overclock and see if there is any lag but meh.

Someone in this thread had talked about OC/OV the GPU (I think it may have been edft but i'm unsure) Whoever it was mind saying what they determined a safe OV was?

    Updated:
    Never mind found it.

Any chance you've taken it past that? I've taken mine to 1.060 so far. still haven't found the top of the clocks yet as i've been busy with work and just been throwing random games at it to see how they perform (Dirt2, Grid, Crysis, Just Cause 2, Far Cry 2, etc.)

It's a pretty big annoyance that the drivers don't seem to recover.

i hate to beat a dead horse, but can someone Guide me though OCing my 6770m on my DV7t?

i currently have sapphire trixx and it lets me more the cursors that can change the core clock, gpu voltage, and memory clock, but is that it? how do i know its working?

when i try to reset after ive changes some settings it tells me the program has stopped working, this happen to anybody else?

should i use a different program? also i know overheating can be an issue, would getting a cooling pad for my laptop solve that? or would it still be insignificant

Increasing the voltage to 1.060 doesnt make a difference.Max clocks i have till this moment are 950/1050.

1)Download Gpu-z and monitor the clocks. (It shows a wrong value for the memory clock as it cant recognise the card's type of memory.)

2)Happens to me as well.Just lower the clocks to their stock value and apply.

3)Depends on the cooling pad.Search the forum for more info about cooling pads.

Anyone tried Dirt3 on yours ?
Can't put it on fullscreen no matter what...
I changed the config file and tried alt+enter.
If i alt enter it goes full for 2s but with a stretched ratio and the menu doesnt respond but the sound keeps playing.
I have to crash the game and restart.

Anyway in windowed mode the game runs very well, everything on high and some details on Ultra, i get 45+ fps !

Just played Dirt 3 on my DV7T 1600X900 Quad. Same exact issue even when ported to my Vizio LED 1366x768 Via HDMI. I hit Alt+Enter screen goes black like its trying then immediately reverts to windowed mode instead. Did not have this issue with Dirt 2. Max Settings with Frames to spare in windowed mode (matched to screen size)

Any chance you've played shift 2? I tried playing it but I was getting like 5-7 fps (guessing) at mid settings with overclock which just doesn't seem right since I can play dirt 2 and pretty much any other game with frames to spare at max or close to max.

I'm hoping to get around to actually reviewing the laptop possibly this weekend but who knows haha.

Edit: So I told the graphics card to leave all settings to be controlled in-game and now it runs smooth as butter.. Not a great game in my opinion still but thats just me.

To correct the fullscreen issue i forced the use of DX9 in the config file.
I also have to let the application control the effects in Catalyst and revert it after i quit the game otherwie firefox looks crap.
I ll have to create a profile for Dirt 3
Anyway at full settings in DX9 its runs perfectly :)

I Own Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl on steam currently only Clear Sky is downloaded but I can tell you the frame rates while decent at lower settings weren't playable at higher settings. (Basically anything DX10.1 past Medium settings wasn't playable.

So. the HD 3000. Pretty darn good FPS if you ask me for an integrated graphics solution.

Anyone decide to play on the road with the HD 3000 only? I can see myself turning down the graphics and firing up that bad boy. I'm really impressed with Intel on this one.

On my dv7tqe before I returned it to get the FHD screen I could play WoW on High on the Radeon graphics in windowed mode 1600x900 and on Fair on the Intel graphics. All at playable framerates.

We'll see what changes with FHD on the new machine.

Your WOW performance sounds pretty good, considering that in windowed mode you generally take a FPS hit -vs- playing full screen.

I will be going to buy a laptop next week, but somehow reading the last few pages of this thread somehow really left be confused. Some people say they experince serious v sync problems, others say that they have problems while running certain games like assassins creed, some get very low fps while playing not very demanding games like stalker, and dirt3 requires some change of config to play on the fullscreen, while according to few radeon drivers also crash.
Previously the only high end gfx card i had was 9800gtx+ which gave me no problems whatsoever with the driver or anything, unfortunately nvidia messed woth some drivers which resulted in my card being fried, but those things happen like once in a millenium.
So in the end is it really a good choice buying this laptop, or it will give me random problems every once a while?

PS plz ignore the typos as i am typing from my n900

ive had the DV7t for about 2 weeks now, and have just finished playing AC:BH and it was smooth gameplay thoughout (25-30+ fps with EVERYTHING ON HIGH, including res, beautiful game btw)

it a great comp, and id recommend it

just installed METRO 2033 and ran everything on highest setting, and it looks awesome, yet the fps can dip to 15 and yet go up to 45 when indoors, so i think ill scale it down a bit

all in all, this is a great comp to game,

A quad core i7 at 2.0ghz means that 4 processors runinng at 2.0ghz each totaling up to 8.0ghz? and at 2.9ghz they total up to 11.6ghz? Am i right?

Not four processors, but for cores. But essentially, yes. If a program can utilize all the frequency of all the cores than it essentially like having 8ghz. Although, now I am wondering, can one process use all four cores just for that one process? or must multiple cores work on multiple processes? Depending on the answer, that may change my original answer. Because if a single process for some reason needs 8ghz, I am wondering if all four cores can work together to add up to ghz in that respect. Certainly though for four diff processors that each need 2 ghz, it is more to less the same as having 4 2gz cpus

    They are not cumulative.

Generally, the simple idea is that 1 independent process per core, each running some set of instructions at some clock period. (The frequency indicates how fast it takes run an single instruction in a single cycle.)

A process can create or fork a child thread that could run in parallel or independently in a free core(s) while it does something else before it merge back together again.

Of course, it get quite more complex than that once you include OS Context Switching, Threading, and another other special hardware/ software techniques.

We are bound to get random problems in the future regardless where, how, who, and when.

    Murphy Law's still applies.

In my opinion, I came across more problems with AMD than with Nvidia's. There are people who said otherwise.
But the time it takes for AMD to resolve a problem is pretty much the same time as Nvidia fix theirs. Just AMD hides it better
by releasing newer drivers more frequently.

HP AMD drivers often have the tendency to be more stable for those with switchable graphics with Intel than the current official AMD Drivers, which doesn't support switchables with Intel.
Which is problematic when HP decides to stop releasing those newer drivers when people stop emailing complaints to them or as soon when a new generation of the series are released.

I'm new to PC gaming, I haven't really played any PC games since Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I know this will be a broad question, but where would be a good place to start to really test this machine out and have some fun? I went ahead and downloaded the demo for Crysis, and played it on whatever the default settings are. I don't even know how to change them to really push it.

What demos should I try out to start with at least? Thanks!

Cool it. Do you really expect a response in 13 mins?
Are you sure you are looking at the default clock speed of the current speed. The default clock is in the graphics card tab and mine says 725mhz. The sensor tab has the current clock. Mine is fluctuating between 81mhz and 216mhz. You should be fine.
Oh and its not nice to make multiple posts in parallel threads.
