Will the recovery disks still work when I've done system restore like 50 times and I still get blue screens for no reason? Oh, I wrote down the last blue screen, it says "Modification of system code or a critical data structure was detected" and ***STOP 0x00000109 and a bunch of numbers in ()

If something was corrupt when the restore point was established, system restore isn't going to help.

Just back up all your personal files, and run HP's recovery manager (either from the recovery partition or from your recovery DVDs) to put the hard drive back to the way it should have been from the factory.

If it still BSODs after that, strongly consider exercising your 21 day return privilege. If you reorder from the CSR who arranges the return, you should be able to duplicate the deal you had on the old one, if it's cheaper than you could get from a new order today.

Sorry, when I said system restore I meant factory restore. Like 3 times, it still BSODs. So how would I return it if I ordered it custom online from hp.com?

Quick question would it be a better decision to opt for the 1600x900 screen if I'm using this laptop for gaming and school ? Framerates in particular....

For $150 you can get a pretty sleek '22 external moniter.

I am going to be using this for school I probably wont be watching to many blu-ray movies on it thats why I am thinking about saving 150 bucks and just sticking to the 900p screen... I heard the 1080p screen can cause big drops in performance when gaming on the 6770m. Yeah blu ray movies will look better but at the end of the day I watch movies on my TV anyway. Thoughts? I can pay around 800ish for this set-up: but if i were to up the screen and upgrade the gpu to 2gb ram I'm looking at 1100.

Back in September I paid $159 plus tax for my 23.6" Samsung.
I doubt the 17.3" can match it for brightness or clarity.

I ended up choosing the 1080p for two reasons:

    1. The greater screen real-estate will be immensely helpful when I am not at my desk. This will be my main user interface for the majority of my interaction with the PC. The matte screen, also, is much preferable to the high-gloss for me.

    2. Even though you can purchase an external you'll need to be at your desk for this, and I'm purchasing a laptop because I'm going to be using it primarily outside of my office at home.

I swear my inability to play games with the intel 3000 and the BSODs are connected. When I use HP recovery manager to update drivers I do not see any Intel HD driver in the list. Are you supposed to? AFIAK the 109 BSOD and extreme lag during gaming with the 3000 are all driver issues.

I don't understand how I can play Crysis games at nearly max settings, yet Assassin's Creed ranges in FPS from 100+ to 14 on my system. And there is no correlation as to what's on screen most of the time. Even lowering everything, sometimes for a while it will drop to 20 FPS. And many times at full settings I get 40-50 when there is a scenic view, looking at city, etc...

HELP? It has to be the game right, all settings are performance oriented, plugged in, HP recommended power mode...and steam installs all updates automatically.

Sometimes GTA and FarCry 2 will have a consistent 30+ FPS but for a second (and every few seconds makes it unplayable) it will have a sharp fps drop. Although for FarCry 2, it's been confirmed to be a Radeon and DX10 compatibility problem, but happens sometimes in GTA.

I'm about to buy a DV6 tomorrow and I wanted to ask if anyone had a 7200 RPM drive and could state whether it ran hot/noisy or not. I saw that HP offers both 5600 rpm 750gb and 7200 rpm 750gb drives and as I intend to to do some very intensive 3D modelling and gaming, I thought it would be best to see if anyone had any problems with the 7200 rpm drives before I jumped on it. Thanks.

it's not noisy at all. The fan is more noisy than anything and that only kicks in when it gets hot. If you run it with the Intel Graphics, you will never hear the Fan unless the room is very quite.

My experience is with dv7. 7200rpm hard drive runs a steady 37°C. SSD is always cool to the touch. Surface of the notebook gets a bit warm on the left side, but not hot. Cannot cook on top of it like you can with some older models.

Do you mean you installed the SSD in the optical drive, or have you now replaced the 7200 hdd with the SSD?

My DV6t /w i5-2520m and Intel GPU is constantly around 42ºC (CPU temperature 40ºC, 5400 HDD 36ºC), which is uncomfortable for me compared to my previous laptop with i5-430m which hovered around only 35ºC over long periods of time. I am disappointed with the sandy bridge which is supposed to run cooler, and with this HP cool sense.

I played and beat Assassin's Creed Brotherhood the last few days on medium-to-max settings (1440x900 resolution on my external monitor) and it was pretty smooth. I didn't record or take note of the fps but there was no lag or stutter during the entire story mode.

    My machine: HP DV6t select edition i5-2520m HD6770m 1GB.

Just an update if anyone cares, but now is an awesome time to buy a new dv6t!
I returned my old malfunctioning one and am planning to buy one with
    2.2-3.3 ghz i7
    Silver finish
    2 GB AMD 6770
    HD screen (the new one)
    2 batteries (9 and 6 cell)
    6 gb RAM

And then finally apply the 30% coupon expiring at the end of this month. Final price with tax? Less than $1200. The same price I got my old one at except with a gig more of graphics memory and a far better screen. For the same price. 30% coupon = good.

For me if I play in Direct X10, I get random FPS slowdown. As in it's averaging far above 30+ but every few seconds it's drops to ~22 or 20. Now I looked this up and people said it was a confirmed issue with DX10. IDK. In DX9 I noticed it only a very small bit I think, but with DX10 it was very noticeable...
I'm having the same issue with Assassin's Creed.
    I'm thinking that driver issue?
What Catayst Version is the most stable I have 11.5 and what driver are Available from HP? The ones that are on their site are older than the ones I have but I recall someone saying the ones they have updated to are newer than mine, where can I get me some of these?
I have no problem with Crysis, Warhead, Crysis 2, with Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Portal 2...

dv7 has two hard drive bays. Corsair Nova 64 in the primary, 640GB Samsung 7200rpm in the secondary, blu-ray reader for the optical.

A week after I put the computer together (a month after I bought the SSD), Newegg put the Crucial M4 64GB on sale for $80, no rebate needed.

I have this problem with the screen when I play demanding games like Crysis 2. What happens is that near the top of the screen, the screen kind of "splices" horizontally. it's like a horizontal line. I don't know what's the right word to use but I can give an analogy. Imagine that the screen is a part of big land, and that horizontal line is a fault line. When you move something in the screen (for example, a window) horizontaly, that fault line appears. or even during in game, if the screen pans from left to right, that line appears.

it also happens when I connect my laptop to my HDTV using HDMI. Anyone knows how to solve it?

    Is it like this [IMG]?
If it is, it's not a graphics card problem, it's just the vertical synchronization disabled on the game. If you want to fix it, turn it on in the game options (VSync).
Btw, pls post a screen of how many fps you get on crysis 2 with VSync off, because if it's on, it limits the FPS to 60 (try xfire or fraps to check the FPS)

    YES. that's it!

my VSync is enabled though. once I play crysis 2, this effect appears and it doesnt go away even after I stop playing. like, if i were to play a HD movie, the effect is still there. the only way to get rid of it is to reboot.

this also seems to happen when i connect it to my HDTV. but when i do connect, the refresh rate is locked at 30 Hz. wondering if it has anything to do with that.

i'll post the FPS for crysis 2 tomorrow

Different games can have differing issues with VSync (Horizontal Tearing) Check in your graphics cards settings for sure.

    http://www.derivative.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Vertical_Sync_and_Horizontal_Tearing

Which laptop model do you have? (DV6/DV7?) Just wondering what your screen res is. My laptop gets here tomorrow and its a DV7 with the 1600X900 Crysis played at Extreme would be nice. :)

I'm thinking about modding my dv6 screen to the 1080p one (if possible). Do you guys think there would be a significant decrease in FPS with the higher res options? I know I can always decrease res/quality, but would the difference be big enough that it would affect quality?

There would honestly be a VERY sigificant drop in FPS. Alot of games would have to go to low. The 6770M is a good card, but the 128-bit bus and relatively low number of shaders won't fair well.

yup. I have the DV6 and I am playing at 1366 x 768 screen. Anyway, I have tried very hard but I still cant figure out why the screen tearing is happening.

funnily enough, today i accidentally ran it on Intel Graphics. it was ultra slow as expected but, there was no screen tearing. hmm.

Yep.Just think that the 1366x768 is 1 MP whereas the 1080p is 2 MP so i would say that there will be a 70% performance drop.

I noticed it on Crysis when I updated the driver through Windows update, I rolled back to the original HP graphics driver and no more tearing.
