The higher percentage isopropyl alcohol you can find, the better. 90% is good, but 99% would be ideal.

Thats prolly at all high. My M9750, when it had a 280M and C2D T7200, hit about the same, maybe 60. Thats pretty reasonable.

    dv6t quad, AMD 6770m?

Any chance you can put it on a monitor and rerun the speed test at 1600x900 and/or 1920x1080?

Should I get the Dv6tqe or the Dv7tqe? I want the Dv6t because it is smaller and more portable, but how much of a difference is the 1366x768 in the Dv6 from the 1600x900 resolution in the Dv7? Does the 1366x768 resolution look good while gaming? Wouldn't the higher resolution be better?

Also what is the size difference between the two?

    Thanks :)

If you're carrying it to friends or between two locations / houses -> dv7

if you really want to use it "on-the-go" smaller is better for you, however the dv6 is pretty heavy, I'd go for dv7 als DTR and something smaller, perhaps office only, for mobile computing.

I will be bringing it cross country a lot. So I'll be going to the airport with this and a 15" MBP.

Isn't DV6 less strain on the GPU because of small resolution, so it will play future games better?

Anyone played Portal 2 on either system? I figure it will run fine at the dv6 and dv7's respective native resolutions at maximum details, but you know what happens when you ASSume.

I also looked at the posts about overclocking at your own risk. I have never overclocked before so would it harm your machine, and what kind of performance boosts would you see with the 6770m if you did?

try not to exceed clock 800mhz / memory 900mhz if you do not know what you are doing, and monitor temperatures

try to climb in 15 into 15 or 25 from stock clocks, little by little and test a good time to see the temperatures and system stability

I can play it on my dv6-3000 with 5650 at native res at about 30-40 fps when my gpu is oc'd, so you'll be able to play it at 50-60 at native most likely.

i'm consistantly getting 60-90 FPS on highest setting even on my dv6-4000 with the 6570m at native resolution, the 6770m should be more than capable.

What sort of temps are people getting after 2+ hours of gameplay? Just the other day I was playing a game for a couple hours with Hardware monitor running and the CPU temp maxed at 93C with GPU at 89C.

I was playing with the laptop on my lap, but still, those temps are a little high for what I'm comfortable with. The fans were on max pretty constantly, and I think the GPU undervolted itself once due to temps.

All that being said, I'm really impressed with how little of the heat on the bottom makes it to the left palm rest. Even at 90+C it was never uncomfortable.

For desktop use, I was going to make a wooden cradle to hold it standing on edge next to my monitor. If it gets too warm with the vents unobstructed and the entire bottom exposed to air, it's time to tear it down and repaste the heat sinks.

Too bad the power switch is hidden under the lid. Not my favorite location, and a real annoyance in a 'desktop replacement' model.

    Update to my TF2 entry.
    Settings:All high with 2xAA
    Resolution:1366x768
    Max FPS:60(lock)
    Min FPS:~58

Also, for those that might be having 80C CPUs, I did the copper mod, but I could only fit ~4 on the CPU heatpipes and 2 on the actual CPU plate. But it lowered my temps from ~84C average to a 74C max. So it did better than I expected. :) Also, for those that might do it, I recommend you get heatsinks around 3mm, 5mm only fits for the GPU heatpipe.

    I bought these:
DDR DDR2 RAM Cooler Heat Sink Heatsink f RAM VGA RHS-03 | eBay
    And
Heat Sink SD RAM For DDR DDR2 DDR3 Memory MC-200 Copper | eBay

They were a bit too tall to be put on the CPU heatpipe without creating conflicts with case, which is why I recommended ones with a height around 3mm. And as for a tutorial, sorry, but I'm not disassembling it again... Doing it twice is already bad enough.

I applied those kind of ramsinks on my desktop GPU.. they usually just have an adhesive backing that you peel off and stick on directly, i believe the adhesive pads are made to do what thermal compound does?.. not sure on that but when i did them it didn't require thermal compound

Yup, just remove the sticker and stick it on. Make sure you press on it for a little bit, or it'll fall off. Also, if you make a mistake, just apply force to it by the sides and it'll fall off.

The compound will melt if you heat it up to a really high temp(had my dad grind them down with a machine and one's compound melted).

    Edit:
    Played DA:O.
    Settings: High with 4xAA

I got it during battle. Lowering the AA to 2x gave me better FPS, but I didn't measure. But I can definitely tell it's a lot smoother, while looking pretty similar, so probably 30+ with 2x.

So I spent a few hours repasting. This was by far a lot more difficult to take apart the first time compared to my g73 the first time, but it's not so bad after that. I also played around with sticking on ram heatsinks to cpu heatsink. The results aren't that great overall. With a simple repaste, there's basically no change when I play BFBC2 at stock clocks (84C). When I play overclocked at 850/925, the temps are lower by like 6-8C lowers (88C compared to 96). With the heatsinks on the CPU, the overclocked max temps in BFBC2 dropped about 10C to 86C but at stock clocks the temps didn't change compared to the OCed temps (86C).

Hope this helps anyone who's thinking of maybe repasting.

there's a lot more things connected to the motherboard that had to be disconnected to flip it for the repaste. the good thing is that you don't have to remove the screen to repaste though.

I don't know about the dv6, but the removal instructions for the cooling apparatus on the dv7 can be summed up as:

    1. Disassemble computer completely.
    2. Remove motherboard.
    3. Remove cooler from motherboard.

Could you please post your CPU and GPU temps when playing GTA IV and check for possible throttling?

I'm planning on buying a new notebook, the dv6 or the m14-x, depending on how good the cooling is.

yea you basically had to disassemble everything to access the heatsink

first go at it took me like 3 hours to take it apart and put back together. the 2nd time around only took me like 40 min.

here's a picture for those interested

You can use both. Here's how:

    For Xbox 360 (Wired):
You can use any wired Xbox 360 controller, install driver from Microsoft ( Xbox 360 Controller for Windows | Microsoft Hardware. This is the easiest thing to do if you have a wired controller. Keep in mind games have to support controllers...

    For Xbox 360 (Wireless):
You can buy a wireless receiver for PC to connect Wireless Controllers. It probably comes packaged with this one: Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows | Microsoft Hardware. Or you can search for one online (used at ebay). Since Microsoft has controller drivers it is pretty simple. But probably most expensive and games have to support it...

    PS3 controller (Wireless/Wired solution):
This is the cheapest in your case (if you don't have wired 360 controller). Download the MotionJoy driver for PS3 controller: MotioninJoy | Playstation 3|Xbox 360|Dualshock 3|Sixaxis|Game|Driver|
If you have Bluetooth built in (or if you have a USB Bluetooth dongle), you can play wirelessly! It is great. If you don't you can get it to work with the USB cable used to connect to PS3. MotionJoy's website has plenty of tutorials and you can also check out Youtube how to's.
The very cool thing about MotionJoy is that it can emulate the 360 controller for Windows Live games and others and this works really well. But the games have to support it...

Now I have used the 360 wired controller in the past with Halo 1. Not a very great experience as on the Xbox, but it was playable. Recently I played GTA IV with the PS3 controller (via MotionJoy) and in order to do this had tell MotionJoy to emulate the 360 controller. Once you do it, it's very simple. And it worked PERFECTLY! :D And you can use the SixAxis functions too, but I didn't really use them.

I really hope this helps! And by the way, for games that don't support controllers, it is possible (has to be, right ?) to download programs or utilities that will allow you to use joysticks and controllers for Keyboard/Mouse input, however, I have never tried to do that mostly because unless a game supports controllers, it is not going to work well, and also I don't think it's worth finding a decent, malware, virusfree software to do this as well as worth putting bloatware on your PC.

Please Rep if this helped!
