At AMD Radeon HD 6770M - Notebookcheck.net Tech, it has listed the 6770m under the 555m. And from other forums and online communities I got the feeling that the 6770m (with GDDR5) would perform a bit better than the 555m (which got me really happy 1. Because I want the card I have to smoke any others and 2. Because I was also looking to purchase the XPS15 or 17). When you click the FPS's, you can see that they tested the 555m on the XPS 17, paired with a i7-2630qm and the 6770m on an HP DV7 paired with a i5. Does that account for the difference and lower FPS's that you can see between the common games?

I mean since I am getting the DV6 (the DV7 was too big for me, although technically a better deal) I am happy that it beats the XPS 15's max graphics card by a significant amount. But beating the 555m on the XPS 17 (which by the way comes with an unnecessary 3GB vRAM [DDR3 I believe]) would be Icing on the cake.

I want to apologize to anyone who might think that this is pointless or childish, but this Laptop is my first one, and I have been stuck with a 6-year old Dell for the first two years of college, so I want this thing to be the baddest boy around.

Nope, that cable only provides the controller with power. It still connects wirelessly (sorry :() If you were to plug it in, you can see that it won't work, in fact most computers will disable the USB Port because it draws more power that normal to power the controller. If you want to use it you might have to buy the PC wireless receiver for 360 controllers. Since I haven't done that I can't be 100% sure.

But since you have a PS3! You can use the MotionJoy method. Good Luck!

    don't know about GTA IV
but hope my experience could shed some light for u.

I've tested SC2 settings, and found the best settings that the system can handle (at these settings, probably puts the GPU and CPU at the most stress without fps getting too low).

I've been able to play for 2 hrs straight, and not notice ANY lag what-so-ever.

Highest temps were about 75C for the GPU, and 85C for the CPU.

Normally a CPU/GPU wouldn't throttle unless it reached 100C, so i really wouldn't worry too much about this.

I don't think this is a good idea, like I said the charger cable only powers the controller, so if there is a Mod, it will be difficult and maybe messup Wireless functionality.
The PS3 controller is easiest after Wired 360 controller. Use that.

i know this may be a bit premature

but how do you think this graphics card will handle RAGE when it is released? does it look promising?

also i cant wait for Diablo 3, but i have no doubt that it can handle it no prob

No doubt it will be fine. I can't say for sure you'd get 30+fps on a 1080p Screen with all 4xAA, etc. But over here: AMD Radeon HD 6770M - Notebookcheck.net Tech you can see that it is in the Class 1 Graphics card. And the benchmarks that they have for games were on a DV7 with an i5, not quad-core. Look at similar games, similar cards and you can get an estimate. If I am not mistaken, I think RAGE will take good advantage of a Quad-core and therefore it will be better the idea the Notebookcheck stats give you.

You can see the specs of the laptops by clicking the FPS numbers toward the bottom of the page.

    Monday Night Combat

    Settings: All mid
    Max FPS:60
    Min FPS: 30

    GTA IV
Settings: All medium, others at default
    Max FPS:55
    Min FPS:45

Temps were 84C max for CPU, avg was about 65-75C. GPU's max was 73C.

Btw Bag3l, you have two of my entries(DA:O and League of Legends) in the wrong place. I didn't game at 1600x900, I only gamed on 1366x768.

Sorry if this was already posted, but what temps are you guys getting while playing Crysis 2. I have a DV6TQE and my CPU temp peek 93C. Other games it runs at significantly less. What are other people getting?

The fans run at full blast, but 93C is only the absolute max that I've seen. It typically maxes as ~90C and runs at mid 80s.

I would give it a few days and run some torture tests to make sure nothing is defective. Other people have been able to successfully apply new thermal compound to it. I'm not a heavy gamer, so I don't think I'll need it, but I think I'm going to buy a "nicer" laptop stand/cooling fan.

the specs of this graphics card says its capable of doing 3D, anyone know if this is possible with their DV6 or DV7?

obviously youll need the glasses. but is it possible? (the monitor capable?)

Yes it is possible. The issue is that AMD has not released driver that enable that by themselves. You have to use third-party software (drivers) like:
TriDef: TriDef - Stereoscopic 3D Software
    iZ3D: iZ3D Drivers and Software for Stereoscopic 3D - iZ3D

And for 3D Blu-ray movies, you need to use
ArcSoft Total Media Theatre: ArcSoft, Inc. — World-Leading Multimedia Software Provider or
Video editing software, Multimedia Software and Blu-ray playback software by CyberLink to output in 3D.

3D is an area where nVidia (currently  ) outshines AMD Radeon.

I have the cheap-man's 3D setup right now.
    :D
Download iZ3D, and in setting use the free Red/Cyan mode as opposed to "real" "stereoscopic" 3D. Buy a pair of Red/Cyan glasses and that way you can use any monitor, any TV, any Projector to play in 3D for the price of glasses. It also gives you a good idea of how the performance will be affected in 3D.

By the way you can use Green/Magenta, or even define custom colors if Red/Cyan hurts your eyes (in case you know from experience)

    BUT IT WORKS EXTREMELY WELL!
Gave me another reason to replay some games, like Half-Life 2. A lot of people think 3D is a gimmick and unnecessary, but I am not among those people.
    Good Luck

When I try this my DV6 hangs. It works and I can play in anaglyphic 3d, but if I try to run anything the system hangs. After restarting the desktop will not load; it just appears as a black screen. I had to remove it in safe mode. I tried this 3 times and it did not work :( Am I doing something wrong?

I have done this on two laptops and a desktop without that problem. Very sorry to hear that it happened to you. iZ3D only affect DirectX output (9,10,11) and so the only issue I have ever had is when watching Youtube in fullscreen, and hardware acceleration is enabled sometimes I get a black screen, but if I turn it off, then everything is fine. I am worried that if it happened to you, it might happen to me.

THE ONE THING I HAVE TO SAY!
Is that maybe you were using Radeon 6770m, restarted and it switched to Intel GMA 3000 (running on Battery?) which might not be compatible with it since it works very very differently than dedicated and even discrete graphics cards. Check out this issue, although I completely understand that this might have the same issue and it might make you go through restore again (and you might not want to).

This works on Radeon 5570 (My Desktop)
    This works on Radeon 5470m (Brother's DV6)
This works on Mobile Intel 915GM (My laptop)

Rest Assured that I will definitely try this once I get my notebook and will let you know what happens.

Other reasons it may have failed:
Maybe you forgot to choose Red/Cyan - free (which is most likely not the case since you said it was working with games).

    a quick search brought this:
"again, did you enable any opengl options ? enabling opengl makes my system do that at next reboot" from here: iZ3D :: View topic - iz3d driver causes Black Screen of Death after reboot..
    Hope this helps. :)

I tried every type of installation method. Crysis 2 will run in anaglyphic (RED/CYAN) 3d, but I can't do anything else. When I right click on the desktop, all I get is a perpetual loading wheel. When I restart, the login screen loads fine but it takes longer to load my desktop. When it finishes all I see is the pointer and the rest of the screen is black. I have to uninstall the software in safe mode. Maybe there is some incompatibility with the driver. (This is a newer card right?) I also tried the Beta version, but that had the same problems :(

Personally, I do not think it's worth repasting the cpu on these if you're maxing out at like 82-83C running prime95 on the stock paste. I tried IC-diamond 7 and there's no significant change.

i see on this forum that most people are OCing their 6770m. from what ive always been told, its not a good idea to OC a laptops graphics card.

so my question is, is OCing on the DV7 sustainable? should i do it when i finally get my laptop (delayed :( ) ?

im thinking of getting a cooling pad, would that be enough to keep the temps low after the OC? thanks

A small amount of overclocking with temperature monitoring should be fine for the long run. Although I don't think I will do this as soon as I get it, I will probably do a little (especially on a external Monitor with higer resolutions).
Right now I know the processor, the graphics card are very good, I just worry that my build-quality is on par, that the fingerprint reader works well and the HD Webcam is not as bad as people have said.

    Negatives I am concerned about:
    • Case being separated in some areas.
    • Don't mind screen resolution but do you guys have some resources (software, webpages) that help calibrate the screen?
    • Webcam framerates really slow. Would a lower resolution have faster rates?
    • Graphics driver crashes (especially when using iZ3d).
    • ^ Graphics crashes with Ubuntu.
    • THE VGA & HDMI cables blocking each other. The ports are too close! And I like using both at the same time on other notebooks.
    • Worried about Backlit Keyboard mod (REALLY want it!)
    • Someone reported speakers either cutting out often or not functioning correctly.
    • And one last thing (so far) is how do the recovery DVD's work once they are burned? They are a backup of what? I don't think they are Windows 7 OS installation DVD's right?

IF ANYONE CAN UPLOAD A VIDEO recorded via Webcam to Youtube, of anything at all (a ball bouncing  or something) I would definitely rep. Thanks.
And by the way, I have XP and I can access Webcam directly from My Computer as well as via Software and Chat Clients, is there a way to access the Webcam directly in Vista and 7?

Usually the recovery disks have the OS's in them, but i don't think you can just pop them into another computer and install windows 7.. it's more like a image of how the computer came from factory, and reinstalling all the drivers, bloatware, and OS at the same time.. if you get what i'm trying to say..

Yesterday, I installed and played some games on my new dv6 (i7-2630qm, 8gb ddr3, 500gb, Radeon 6770M) - Dirt 2, NFS - Shift 2 Unleashed, Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033. All the games, I could play on high settings. I checked the fps in Dirt 2 (with its own benchmarking tool) with all settings on High (and Ultra as applicable with all DirectX 11 features turned On) and I got around 35-40, which is very good. I also checked the fps in Just Cause 2 with all on High and got around 20-25 and sometimes 30 but it was fluently playable. I could also play Metro 2033 on high settings.

I also tried playing on the Intel HD 3000 and I got overwhelmed seeing its performance. I could play Dirt 2 and Shift 2 on medium settings. So, the Intel HD 3000 graphics is very much capable of playing casual games on medium settings.

I checked the Temps on GPU and CPU while playing. The GPU reached to max about 85 C and the CPU reached to about 70-75 C. The fan crancked up after about 10 mins to max and burst of hot air was blowing out of the side vents. I noticed that the parts adjacent to the vent became very hot to touch after about 1 hr of playing. Also, the left palm rest got warmer, although the right side was totally cool. I put my notebook on cooling pad but it could not help much the heating up of the left side parts. But, internal temps were nothing much to be concerned about.

I get the idea that repasting is generally a waste of time, and if the GPU is cooler than the CPU there's no real need to replace the thermal pad on the GPU with a sheet of copper.

I also get the idea that adding stick on RAM heatsinks to the cooling plates for the CPU (red circle) and GPU (blue circle) can lower temps by up to 10° C?
And to get to those plates, I'll have to remove the system board from the computer?

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but I would really like to know if anybody here owns Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Some say it's the most demanding PC game to date, and I would LOVE to know how the Dv6 or Dv7 handles it. I know it won't be playable on max settings, but it would be cool to see some results!

Different chips will get different OC stability. OC stability also varies across driver versions so it'll take a lot of testing.

If you want to add ram heatsinks to the CPU, you have to remove the keyboard, take out the HD and CD slot, open the case, and flip over the motherboard.

What settings would I have to change to get the performance on battery the same as performance plugged in?

I just installed BC2 on my dv7 and in the high settings it runs upper 40s plugged in. On battery it runs low 20s. I tried changing windows power settings and the intel settings so that it runs max performance on battery. I'm not sure if I'm missing something?

I don't have it (yet?) but I know that the quad-core is amazing for that game and actually benefits a lot from multiple cores!

You have to go to power option, then to advanced settings, to to Processor Power Management, make sure it is 100%. Then make sure that in the AMD Catalyst setting on battery is set to maximize performance.

I usually just plug in when I am playing video games. Because I like power saving settings when I am on the go and am not playing games, only surfing the internet and watching videos.

There has got to be something else that controls it in addition to the above. I verified that what you recommended was changed and it was set to maximum performance. Started up BC2 and got 20s for framerates, plugged in the AC power and watched it go up to the 50s. Unplugged the AC and watched framerates drop way down again.

The only reason I want to know is that I have 2x batteries, and I'd like to know how long I can play games for while on an airplane or other things where I won't be wired.

I have actually noticed this also when i was using my brother's DV6z, switch the power modes to see if they make a difference (for me even though all settings I could change were the sam e, HP recommended worked better than HighPerformance in games like GTA4, but since I never play on battery I didn't see a difference there. Make sure that you also have the fans on high with coolsense, i know this will kill battery, but maybe the FPS go down because it starts to overheat, I know that they should turn on at that point.

BUT MAYBE THIS IS THE RESULT OF TURBO BOOST>
it's always stated by the Intel Ad's that "WHEN there's enough power" so maybe either it doesn't boost as much, or is disabled from doing so.

Just trying to help. Good luck and keep me posted!

You don't have the GPU selector (in Bios maybe?) set to Automatic, do you?

That wouldn't change while he is playing the game. He said that during play, if he unplugs it goes from 40's to 20's and back if he reconnects.

Let me ask you guys something. Do you guys get a BSOD when trying to plug in a wired xbox 360 controller? It only happens immediately after the machine installs the drivers for it and I'm running the 6770M graphics, but works just fine if it's the intel graphics.
