i allready checked the bios settings, its all correct. i used notebook hardware control to see the temperature, its on 70°, what cant be right. i tried to install or update the intel firmware and it doesnt work. i also installed the intel chipset driver, nothing changed.
please tell me the driver which i have to install. the strange thing is that i installed every driver, so i cant imagine its because of that.
how about the ati 7.10 drivers, is anyone using them on xp?

I just installed the modified versions yesterday, but haven't ran it through any comparisons yet. What do you want to know?
-
Probaply running XP/Vista parallel isn't the best thing also.. -
Very dumb! So yeah. But my fan is pretty quiet when it's that temp. The fan should only run at higher speeds when the GPU is 60-70 and above. My fan gets loud at 70+ (gaming, etc) but spins down when GPU cools down to 55 and below.
But yea, 70 for the 8510p is very normal. I'm thinking of O/Cing it higher too -
i swear to god these ati drivers are made by satan! i reinstalled vista with that recovery thing of hp, so everything was running like it came preloaded. under vista the fan was very quiet and he did throttle depending on cpu usage. i was doing all that vista clean up to gain some performance back that ms has stolen me before i kicked the old driver and installed 7.10 with mobmod. guess what, the fan is now turning all the time, on low speed but still annoying...
does anybody use notebook hardware control? for some notebooks there are profiles so the fans run quieter, i couldnt find any for the 8510p.
is there any other option to change the fan rpm levels according to the gpu temps?
greetz, noi$ia -
@sordid:
do you have any problems with other drivers on xp? do you have the display on screen when changing volume, screen brightness etc.? does the notebook run quiet with no or only small fan usage?
thanks for your reply

Well I was too lazy to do the DH mod to get the new video drivers. Good news, HP has released an update to the video drivers. I'll update once I see which video driver it has. btw the only time my fan has not been on, is when my HD was around 26-28 C.

It's for windows XP. The driver version isn't the standard ATI one as far as I can tell. -
@jin07:
i was right now on the hp driver website, there is still the old one from august listed. where did you see the new one?
i used rmclock just to see if something changes on the cpu temps. it did throttle down to 1.4 ghz. i wonder why the hell hp isnt capable of shipping a book with all this crap like norton on it, but the cpu doesnt throttle down correctly! i mean, this is one of the top notebooks that hp is selling right now and they are threating it like the unwanted step child...
does anyone have some working acpi settings to share? if not, it think i will do some by myself with a little help but i dont know if it will work.
besides that fan and cpu problem i really love this notebook, the built quality is definitly great and the power is by far enough for a notebook i think.

EDIT:
@jin07:
thanks for sharing the link. it seems like this is an older driver version of ati. the 7.10 under vista is the following one (desktop driver with mobility mod) :
Driver Packaging Version 8.421-070928a-053254C-ATI
@shambles:
why are you mentioning the oc'ing? with the "AMDGPUClockTool" its no problem to oc the gpu.
for more information watch the post of dixhead over here:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=35142&page=9 -
Just use the link I posted above. That should do it. It's for Windows XP, NOT Vista.
-
About the OC: You haven't tried, do you?Seems like the gpu is somehow locked or anything like that, cause running the AMD Tool results in bad performance. If i clock to 400/500 i only get about 2700 3DMarks06 and the same in other game benchmarks. If you have a solution: i'm interested
-
the fan is definitly running all the time at 2nd level. it would be great if it is the first level because the fan is very quiet then, i think yours is running on the first level. can you please watch and post your cpu and gpu temps? what about your cpu clock? please dont forget to name the software which you used if you do so.
i dont wanna oc my notebook, its fast enough for my needs at the moment. i am more interested in getting the fan down than overheating my precious.
maybe when i fixed the damn fan i will try to oc it. -
Anyone else having HDMI troubles hookiing this thing up to an external LCD? Namely LG L246WP
-
What kind of troubles are you having?

Hi guys, I am planning to get the 8510p as well. Just wondering if swapping memory will be easy as I plan to get the following ram as well:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231116
Also, is the game support good on vista? If not, I can get the one with XP installed instead.
Many thanks. -
It is really easy to put in new ram. There's a cover on the bottom that you remove. Here's the steps in a nutshell:
1. Touch a piece of metal to remove any static
2. Take off cover over ram
3. Push the clamps off the ram, the ram will then pop up
4. Remove the ram
5. Put in new ram
6. Push ram down until the clamps go back over ram
7. Put cover back on
In other words, take off cover, remove ram, put in ram, put cover back on. -

Why would you buy G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB)?
Your machine comes with a minimium 1gb stick right? So either buy 1GB (for 2GB total) or a 2GB stick for 3GB total. Or if you want to max out 64bit Vista install 2 x 2GB sticks.
Fry's has a OCZ 2GB stick that is under $80 after rebate. Mine just arrived, now if only my 8510p would get here... -
does anyone of you guys know if you can get a student discount on that notebook?
-
Are there any chance for new drivers also for VISTA? Where do I have to write to make pressure for new drivers? ;-)

David:
Student discounts, like on the consumer side of HP are not to be had. However, HP does offer educational and institutional pricing that you might be able to access. Your schools IT department might know or call the HP and see if your school participates. If you get a good HP rep they will be able to determine who your school HP rep is and how to contact the rep.
To my knowledge you will be unable to beat HP's preconfigured pricing but you will do very well if you want to custom configure. With that said, I went the custom configure route and encountered a wicked delay (5 weeks) in the initial ship time. Might be my own bad luck but had I known of the delay I would have just gone with a preconfig model something for you to consider. I dont know but suspect my order has a lower priority then some others. -
Thanks. -
True dual channel has little or no performance increase. Just grab yourself another 2GB stick for best performance.
-
Cool, I will just grab a 2GB stick then. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ackeron how did u get GPU temps??
-
Does anybody have Fujitsu HDD and can measure its temps??
-
I use a temp monitoring program called Speedfan. Excellent little app once you set it up. Watches both my cores, HDD, GPU, etc.
-
well i got my 8510p today. i did really want a T7500 or T7700 depending on how much money i had at time of uk release around £1200-£1290 for the
T7500 or £1390 for the T7700 obviously with the extra ram etc. i wasnt intrested in the T7300 cos i wanted more than 2Ghz. but just in the end i have got a T7300 as it only costed $1010=£495 (yes i bought it in dollars not pounds) so i had to order one so i had saved $400 on other models with same spec sold in usa and more importantly in pound i saved £700 ($1400) not getting the £1200 models
here how it came
Core 2 Duo T7300 / 2 GHz
RAM : 1 GB
HD : 160 GB
DVD±RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM
Vista Business
15.4" Widescreen TFT 1680 x 1050 ( WSXGA+ )
Bargain. just need stick of 2gb ram for cheap -
Does anyone hook their laptop to an external LCD? When im at home, i have it connected to a monitor, sometimes for extended periods of time. Im wondering when it is hooked up, can i close the lid or will it get too hot?
-
I do this all the time with my HDTV. What I do is close the screen just enough to turn off the screen. This leaves about 2 inches from the tip of the screen to the base of the laptop. Doing this, I've watched anime and whatnot for awhile (Had a marathon of a few shows ~8 hours, didn't have anything to do) and it doesn't get hot at all. In fact, I'd say it slightly, very slightly brings down the temp. I'm judging this on the fact that the fan usually slows down after awhile.
-
why not change the thread header to "HP 8510P Owner's Lounge"
there are threads like that for a few other laptops -
-
Well when i hook up the external, the laptop LCD is off, so i wanna know if i can close it completely, not just 2 in from the top
-
Check what do u have set up as a setting for closing the lid in power options. make sure u have 'do nothing' up there and u should be fine. if for example after closing the lid the picture will disappear, change that monitor output is the first output and u should be fine.

Ok. Im still trying to get my XP Pro to fully work and at the mo seems like im missing some drivers. Windows update is still instaling some stuff but I would like to ask if I might be missing something that was not put on HP website??
From what I can gather I downloaded around 19 things, some of which are not necessary.
I included how my device manager looks like at the mo and the list of drivers/soft I downloaded. How is this looking from some of You guys who choose to have XP Pro on it??Attached Files:

Ok people, lests re-read the question. My question is not how to output to external when lid is closed, i can close it just fine with external as the main display and my laptop LCD is off. My question is about heat, is it too hot to have the notebook lid CLOSED while running the laptop.
Thanks. -
It shouldnt be. All the vents are either on the side or on the bottom of the laptop. I was downloading stuff overnight and I didnt notice any extra temp.
-
I leave mine closed all the time and i've not noticed any heat issues. There are no vents on the top of the laptop so I really don't see why it would affect it.
-
I do this all the time with my nw8440. No heat issues here. However, with the lid open, if the fan is running hard enough, I can feel a little bit of air flowing through the left side of the keyboard.
But no, there shouldn't be any heat issues if you leave it running with the lid closed. -
I run my 8510w to an external 22 inch samsung for hours playing Red Orchestra and it doenst seem to effect the heat at all. As people have said, the vents are on the bottom and side.
I have the docking port that lifts the bottom of the notebook off the desk and that might help though. -
Anybody with XP installed??
I managed to get nearly everything apart from one stupid thing which doesnt have drivers anywhere - widnows update nor hp website. and i dont even know what is it lol
help!
maybe some screens of device manager please with detailed list of things installed... please! -
I'm confused so I'd appreciate any help from the forum,
If I ordered an 8510p with XP installed, would I still have to download all sorts of drivers and screw with the system or is that only for fresh installs?
Or should it run well out of the box?
Thanks guys.
rmsnj -
hi does anybody no the specs to run gears of war when released. will our 8510p run it. or a lil bit crap.

I've had the new HP video drivers installed for about a week and haven't had any problems. Looks like you might want to try to switch back to XP Pro Ackeron.
Destiny: What exactly is going on? You mention there's troubles, but don't really talk about what drivers are affected or what is going on. You just say there's drivers problems which is pretty vague to me at least. I did an XP Pro clean install with the XP Pro disk and the driver disk HP sells.
btw. My fan is finally not running. Too bad it only happens when the HD is 30 or below. -
Pro install from the HP media, then updated the ATI drivers (including the
audio driver) from HP patch sp37136 and lost sound. Only way to get sound
back was to reinstall from media again and select only the AT graphic drivers
from sp37136. As a result the "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" is
reported as having no driver in Device Manager.
Thanks... -
hdefjunkie: I had the EXACT same problem you did. I did SEVERAL clean installs until I pinpointed what was going on. So what you want to do is install everything, but the new HP video drivers. When you go to install them, do a CUSTOM INSTALL. Then DESELECT EVERYTHING BUT THE ACTUAL DRIVER and NET 2.0. You can install the ATI CCC if you want. I chose not to after trying it out. What happens is that the ATI sound drivers create a conflict with the normal sound driver. This causes a loss in sound. Unfortunately, you MUST do a clean install to fix the problem. Uninstalling the ATI stuff will NOT work.
Okay just read the rest of your post. Whoops. Do you have both the Microsoft UAA audio drivers and the soundmax HD audio drivers installed? With both of those installed, it should be okay. I've also heard that the order in which you install the drivers matters, but I'm not sure. -
jin07: Thought I loaded both the SoundMax and UAA drivers although only
SoundMax is listed in add/remove programs. Will try to reload both, but need
to make an Acronis backup first.... Loading from scratch is a pain...
I wonder if the ATI drivers tweaked with Mobility Modder would be better? I think the audio device in question is for HDMI.
HP 8510p available!
