guess you are talking about the DH ( driver heaven ) modtool.

well you just have to start it , it does not matter where you have the modtool files stored on your harddrive.

just choose the driver folder as target.
the path should look like this c:\ati\support\7.12.........

made the mistake before to select the actual driver folder ( c:\ati\support\7.12......\driver\driver\......) , and the mod did not work out.

are you up to mod the cat 7.12 ? had my problems with these. For some reason the mobility modding did not work out for me with the catalyst 7.12.

i had serious problems with the modded driver (7.12) , so i went back to the cat 7.11 i modded a month ago with the same tool.
and these do work fine for me.

Ok. Looks like im not still happy. Got VPU Recover errors - still. And as before it crashes and U have to reboot. Also te temp has risen from usual 48 to 53-55C in normal office tasks.

    @ destiny

sorry to hear your problems still exist. So probably this fix is not working for everybody.

I´m curious if this bios update did actually help some people to get rid of their vpu recover problems and system crashes.

How about a poll on this ?

It's actually a pretty good GPU. I think the bios solved the GPU issue for most of the people. I bet the rest who have problems are just the normal amount of people. Really, the only two things I wish they fixed was:

    1. Set more reasonable fan turn-on limits (right now it's >/=2% on the CPU)
    2. I wish I knew how to calibrate the screen.

Does anyone have any ICC color profiles to calibrate the screen or any good settings? Please?

jin07, what do U mean by calibrate the screen?? Are Your colors not right?? I dont really remember what problems did U have.

Ive got a small suggestion about our problems with HD2600. Im going to create new topic for that, so have a look in graphics section.

Jin: I was going to use some colour calibration software way back in September but you need this camera type thing to do it and my friend misplaced his so I never got around to it...

I've asked around for software-only colour calibration stuff (if it's even possible) and no one really has any good info for me so I just tossed it on the back burner :p

Destiny: I'll take a look at your thread now :O

The color isn't horribly off or anything. The colors are just slightly off. I notice this problem mainly when watching vids since I can compare it to my LCD which is calibrated. The by calibrate I mean stuff like change gamma, change color shift, sharpness, contrast, that kind of stuff.

Destiny: I'll also go check out your thread. Wait, this whole post is kind of directed towards you...Oh well :p

    Hello!

My touchpad suddenly stopper working! And the buttons wont work either. I have reinstalled drivers about 5 times now. Still it doesnt work. device manager shows everythings ok, but the mouse just doesnt move.Is there a hotkey to turn the mouse off? Because, I might have pressed the hotkey accidentally. Running Vista..

Please tell me if you know whats wrong. :)

I don't know if there's a hotkey but I know you can disable/enable the touchpad somewhere...I think under the pointer options in the control panel? Or maybe in HP tools?

Does anyone notice some (not-excessive) flex/bounce on the left end of the keyboard (around Caps Lck and Shift keys)? After some use, I felt that the left side of the keyboard exhibit greater flex than the previous generation models, which has almost no flex.
I've tried a new keyboard, but it's the same effect.

My keyboard is pretty solid except over the DVD drive, so I dunno :\

Hey...what is everyone's boot up time? From pressing the power button to all programs loaded @ desktop? I'm getting ~2:00 for Vista Business 32-bit, which really sucks.

Some techie told me Vista was designed with using hibernate in mind, thus the high system requirements, so I've just been hibernating my system all the time recently. Cut my boot time to ~30 seconds or less, but still kind of annoying heh...I'm nervous around anything like hibernate/sleep after 98/ME/even XP :p

Even if you push at the shift key with greater force than usual, do you notice the keyboard sinking in slightly, about 2-3mm?

Nope...don't notice a thing, sorry :\ I can push tab down HARD and move it maybe 1mm, but doing so to shift generates 0 movement.

edit: damn dukens...that sucks, donno what to say. Maybe email/call HP and describe that to them? Say you've reinstalled, etc...

Although they'll probably just say LOLREFORMAT :|

My keyboard is good, except over the DVD drive, where i added some more tape underneath because mine was loosening around the delete key.

My keyboard is good, except (as others have mentioned) around where the DVD drive is. This isn't a real problem for me because I have to put in quite a bit of force to get it to move. Normal typing produces zero flex, even if I pound on the keyboard. I have to really press down to get it to flex.

Unfortunately keyboard will and has got more flex on the right hand side as the casing design doesnt have any support there , so there is a small gap between the dvd drive and the keyboard.

i have few questions regarding this laptop
1)will I see noticeable improvement in gaming with 3gb vs 2gb?
2)Is an external laptop cooler necessary
3)is there anyway to output audio via hdmi?

Keep politely demanding to talk to someone on the next level up. The higher levels tend to be friendly, though otherwise useless. Once "mission control", HP's term, ok's the idea of a replacement you just have to push it until you reach someone who can actually get it done.

Lay out your time and HP's to date and say HP's wasting money and your valuable time. You were a good trooper but enough is enough. Request a specific response time and call them back if they don't call you. Ask, each rep told me every step of the way who they were passing me on too. Stateside, I went through five levels. The toughest was level one in Costa Rica, I am STILL waiting but my replacement is promised for next week. Good luck. Oh try calling HP corporate HQ. They should put you through to a higher level response team. It worked for me.

The guy said that if this wont work we are going to talk about a final solution - replacement I guess. Im supposed to test the notebook with the technican on site if it is crashing again, after the repair.
I honestly doubt that this will fix it so... fingers crossed it won't :)

No chance that the engineer will come with a replacement notebook. I wonder how long it is going to take them to replace it though. And if it will leave me without a machine for some time?
BTW. the part hasnt arrived on time to it will be delayd till Monday :(

Everytime they try that on me, I would demand for the manager, point out the 3 day turnaround, tell them how much I'm losing if they delayed my parts and then they'd expedite a part directly from Singapore (their AP headquarters) or Shanghai (their factory), overnight courier. They can get the part in if they want to, depending on how serious they take the case.

I dont think U get it right. the guy was ment to come in on friday to replace the processor. when they called me thursday, they had parts in stock, and it was ment to be ok for him to come friday. then on friday, around midday, i got a call that the shipment didnt get there on time and he wont be able to come. So because they dont work weekends he will be coming on monday. I dont know how is it in Australia, but in Europe, and in UK, where I live, they ship parts form Netherlands depot. Usually there was no problem, they always had it on time as it was flown from NL.

I misunderstood your point then. It's good that they have the parts ready for deployment as opposed to a need to wait for the parts to come in as they sometimes tend to do here.

I honestly cant believe it... Received a call from CS yesterday (or rather lvl 2 technician) he wanted to have the machine for test (2 weeks without it!!). I demanded the call from CS department and tried to politely ask for a replacement. No way Jose! They still want to have the machine for some bench testing blah blah blah. WTF?? 4 repairs, still not working ok and they do not want to give me the replacement??

Call corporate HQ in the USA. They should put you through to some one who might be able to help. Stress how new the machine was when the problems began. I received mine after 51 days of demanding proper service under my next business day service warranty.

    Here you go Destiny

    http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/regional.html

I called Houston and was conected to a higher level of support, one it had taken me two weeks to get to on my own. You will still have to bang a few heads, nicely of course. Two weeks is crazy. What tests can they run which would last beyond an hour or two. I would have balked at such a request on the 1st try, let alone the 4th. I think you are entitled to a specific explanation....and we know there is not one.
Polite but firm pushing and the taking of names and direct lines worked for me along with a demands for a specific time as to when a task was supposed to be completed.

Hopefully anyone with a brain will declare your computer DOA and pass the case on to a senior tech who then will formally sign off the assesment. Good luck

I got a problem since a week or 2. I installed test drive unlimited and everything works great, but when I play 15-20 mins my laptop just shuts down and the left bottom is really really hot. I assumed it was the gfx card so I tried a downclock to 300/400 instead of 500/600 but that didn't really work. I'm using the latest omega drivers and updated my bios etc. I only found the problem to happen with this game so far so it's really really strange. Anyone with a possible solution? I tried to raise the laptop from the desk with some tops from bottles but without any success.

First off, your laptop is overheating and that's why it's shutting down. After it shuts down, give it some time to completely cool off. Have you tried it with HP's video drivers? Checked the vent and verified that nothing is blocking it or stuck? This is unlikely, but it doesn't take long to look at it. Is Test Drive Unlimited the most intensive program you have? Maybe, you don't notice it with your other games because they don't use up as much resources. Try running 3Dmark06 and see if that crashes your system. Since it's a benchmarking program it will give your laptop a workout. If it crashes, then there's something wrong with the laptop in general. If it doesn't crash, then the game is the problem.

Ran 3Dmark06 without any problems. My notebook would still shutdown after playing a bit of TDU (20-30 mins). Installed the ATi HP drivers. Could play a bit longer but still had a shutdown with really hot air being pushed out. Opened my keyboard and didn't see any dust on the intake fan. Any ideas on how to check the GPU cooler? Haven't figured a way to open the underside of the laptop so a manual/guide would be handy ;)

    Temp monitoring software: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
You could also try out Everest.

Do NOT open your laptop. When I talked about checking your fans I literally meant to flip your laptop over and look at the bottom of your laptop. You will void your warranty if you open up and bottom. Besides, it's not the laptop's fault, it's the game. Check for game patches.

That temp seems too high. Your room isn't really hot right? I'm going to assume no. I think you should make a post in the hardware thread about having high CPU temps. You'll probably get more and better help. Check to see if you get similarly high or CPU temps during Test Drive. Also, post up what your starting CPU temps are. It looks like it might be the laptop after all. If you can't get the temps under control, it may be time to call up HP.

Jin's probably correct. If your game is very CPU intensive as opposed to other GPU intensive games, that probably explains why the temps are hitting the roof and shutting down in the one game only.

Although 3dmark06 does test the CPU, so I'm confused as to why that ran without problems. Perhaps run the temp monitoring software while doing 3dmark06?

As to the temps themselves, yeah the GPU is normal/low but those CPU temps are literally 30c too hot. After several hours of TF2 or other intensive gaming my system temps are roughly 60c CPU and 65-80c GPU.

To be 100% sure those temps are correct, you could always download another temp monitoring program like Everest Ultimate Edition or the latest beta for Speedfan 4.34 (which correctly monitors core2duo now).

And yeah, flip the lappy over and try and blow any dust out of the fan. I don't think it would make a 30c difference though. I'd guess improperly applied thermal paste or something--easily fixed on a desktop, but unfortunately HP will have to do it in this case :(

Ok. My temps after playing the Witcher for loong hours... probably something close to 12... lol. I just cant stop :)
    GPU still o/c 640c 780m.
It cooled down nicely from 75C. This is usually the highest I got (of course using RM Clock to get it so low :) )

If you would like to clean you radiator properly let me know I will write up a small guide how to do it [involves taking the keyboard off etc]

Ackeron, I still cant believe the temps youve got on your GPU...

That'd be great. I'd like to know since my temps are somewhat high. What kind of settings do you use for RM Clock? You have Vista right? Don't think that should matter though. I don't know how to use RM Clock.

EDIT: Destiny: Could you also tell me the best way to clean out all the dust. I had the light bulb moment where I realized I've never cleaned it out. Considering my laptop is on as long as I'm up, everyday, since I got it, I'm guessing that's part of the problem.

EDIT 2: Figured out how to clean out the fan.
