Hey Destiny,
Well I use external HDDs (USB 2.0) quite a bit so I just kind of know from experience that my transfers under Vista were anywhere from 9-15/20mb per sec depending on amount of data, size of files, etc. Pretty slow compared to XP. SP1 is better but blah still slower I think.

Ackeron, thanks a lot for your reply about the speakers' location!

Found a solution for my overheating problem.. clean out the dust! When I opened the keyboard of my 8510p nothing strange was noticeable. So I opened the cover of the fan and wow! There was so much dust in there that air just couldn't flow through anymore. My temps dropped 10-20° now
and my lap is now so much more silent then before.
So if you have heat/noise problems just open the fan cover (be careful for wires!) and clean it out. Worked for me. -
NP cskzh, and yeah Jade it seems the 8510p is a real dust hog
-
For me it looks like the distance between radiator plates is just a bit to close. And it always starts on the side closer to the user...
Also it seems like HP is putting waaaay toooo much thermal paste on it... -
Hmm...I wonder if I should check my paste level
-
I'd probably check if I knew how to apply new thermal paste properly. For me, cleaning out the fans every so often is a better option at keeping my laptop cool.
Though now I feel like cracking her open to check out the paste... -
Arctic Silver has a really good instructions but I will be doing it on mine shortly, so unless you feel confident and know what You are doing I will be writing a post with pictures for it
For AS instructions see http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm -
Hmm. Now that I think about it, it's not that I couldn't figure out how, it's more of a I don't see why I should bother. I think it would void the warranty, plus I haven't seen anything about the gains from using AS. Though I vaguely remember hearing that they can typically help decrease by 3-5 degrees, 10 tops. I'll definitely wait until your guide comes out and see how well AS works.
Lastly, is it true that AS degrades rather quickly so you have to reapply every so often.? -
See this post for temps after I checked my thermal paste...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3331215&postcount=196
I ordered my AS5, hopefully it will come Friday or Saturday [depending on the Royal Mail (sic!)]. AS5 reaches ist best conductivity in around 3-5 days so I will update the post in order to give final results when I will actually do it.
I dont mind reaaplying, but I didnt hear about degrading... I havent changed my desktop AS3 for years now, and last time Ive checked temps didnt move by 1C up... -
I used to build desktops all the time so I'm pretty good at applying paste. If I actually had time it would be interesting to crack this baby open and check HP's workmanship
But no I've never heard of AS5 degrading either. Hell I've still got a tube of it from 2004 sitting in my fridge hahaha.
-
LOL
Ive seen my serviceman applying the paste so I KNOW... lol
It was literally squeezing a big blob in the centre of the core and then pressing the radiator down on it...
Cant wait to test the AS5 influence...
Currently with left oversof HP paste my max temp is 70C
That is running Orthos for nearly 15 minutes
-
I've used this stuff for the past while , easy to apply easy to clean, seems to work well . of course i used to use the $2.00 tube of cheap white grease so .. not done the laptop yet , just my desktops , but this stuff works for me . also seen some mew OZC ice stuff that's tested well , supposed to be better than AS5
http://www.megapc.com/product.asp?pf_id=PAS-ZAL01 -
If I decide to do this, should I also pick up arctic silver's thermal material remover and surface polisher? I figure it's only $6, I'd need to pick up something anyway to clean it up, and I don't need much. I'm glad I heard wrong about AS5 degrading over time. Note that this was in reference to the AS5 in your laptop and not the stuff you store. I think they said some about the constant heat slowly degrading the AS5.
Destiny: When you write your guide, are you going to show pictures of how much you used? I know you don't need much, though some companies don't seem to realize that detail.
Oh yeah, how come no one really talks about Arctic Silver's other thermal compounds? -
Because they are simply the best
I will try to do it as good as possible so people without experience could follow
I bought a set of AS5 and their branded cleaners. Never used them before but they seem to be very good. And I always had problems with my home-brew methods of cleaning
This stuff doesnt really age so I will be using it on my desktop, future laptops etc so a 3.5g tube should last you for goood couple of years, obviously depending on usage. -
Update
My AS5 has arrived
Expect a new topic with picture later this eveningOr maybe tomorrow morning as Id rather take pictures with better light, and its not really nice outside now :/
-
Yeah, I've heard Arctic Silver is the best, but I was talking about Arctic Silver's other products. For instance, I've never heard people talk about the ceramic compound they offer. It's always AS5, so is that their best compound or are the others more situational?
Can't wait to see your guide with the results. I might give it a shot, well if it doesn't void the warranty since I may need that. -
All done
Check it out jin07.

Well I finally got around to calling HP for the XP disks. The voice recognition stuff was annoying but not horrible. I guess I have a very recognizable voice?
Anyway got redirected like 3 times, was on hold for about 5m. In the end I was told by a very nice lady from India that the XP CDs are only free within 90 days of item purchase (the length of the software warranty), and she pointed out mine was bought in September of last year. I was kindly informed that I could buy the CDs for $5-10. So blah to that.
If I was actually having trouble with Vista I would buy them for sure, but at this point I'm operating just fine. I think the FREE XP offer ends this summer (?) but I'm not sure if the $5 XP CD offer has an end date. Might be good to find that out just in case...
So, sorry Jin, no XP install for me in the foreseeable future -
You know that you should be able to install from any disk that is the same language version as your Vista, must be XP Pro, best if SP2 as well and by typing in your key from the label at the back?
-
I didn't even know they used to be free. Oh well, I thought it was $10 very well spent (got XP and Driver disk). I got them when I got my laptop so $10 wasn't much in the grand scheme of things. Plus, outside of the visuals, I don't really like Vista and I would have to get XP later on anyway. So I have windowblinds running, which is great.
-
-
Ackeron, that was what HP representative told me. It should install ok, and be validated, if it is not, give M$ a call, activating it as normal saying you are downgrading from Vista Business
-
XP installation didn't take me that long. I think the whole process took 2 hours max, probably more like 1:20. The long part is getting everything back on your HD. The programs were somewhat of a pain, but the bigger issue was moving my massive video collection to my external (which I should have earlier, but was lazy in my backup routine). Oh, this is when I was reformatting. Looking at the prices of SSDs going down makes me tempted to wait a few more years and get one. I bet my 8510p will last longer than my X1000 (~5 years).
-
Oh yeah I'm not worried about the install itself. I've been setting up Windows since 3.1 waay back when
It's all the data I'll have to move around that's a pain. Down to oh 30GB free as of this morning, so moving/organizing (the big one, hah) 120GB of crap would definitely consume my weekend.
-
Dont tell me that
Every time I do a clean install and dont have time to sort my files out I create a TEMP folder... eventually after couple of clean installs there is a temp folder inside the temp folder inside the temp folder... etc
Luckily I have a spare HDD now (as USB external now) and can swap between old drive, and new one. I didnt format the Vista partition yet so I use it now for example to work and write this e-mail.
I noticed that I can even boot to that vista as it is first partition on the USB hard drive -
I always wondered something. When you have an OS installed on a HDD, can you still use that as a drag and drop external? Right now, since I'm using a 7K200, I still have the original HDD that came with my laptop sitting in my desk. Could I have used that as an external even though it has XP installed on it? Well, I guess it doesn't matter much anymore since I have a MyBook external that I got for $30.
I'm also considering whether I should "promote" my guide in my sig. I want to use another term instead of promote, but I'm guessing that you'd see this *****. -
Actually I often find leaving an OS on externals is very handy. Awhile back I got a new HDD for my previous laptop and it died within a week. BUT! I was able to re-install the old drive and be up and running within a few mins because I had left Windows on it.
Also I'd say sure, promote your guide. Seems a lot of people are asking about it these days. -
Added it, now I have to wait for it to show up. Oh it won't show on older posts?

Guys, NEW BIOS for our 8510p
Click me
HP Compaq 8510p Notebook PC System BIOS Update Version F.12
Updated the new micro code patch for the Intel Penryn and Merom processors to improve system stability.
Fixes the issue with the WLAN signal being temporarily lost while on AC/DC transitions. [I know something about it... it was pain in the ***]
On vPro systems, fixes the issue where SOL over WLAN has to be disconnected and then reconnected for another session.
Fixes the issue with the loss of modem after upgrading to the new BIOS.
NOTE: If the Windows-based HPQFlash SoftPaq is used to update the BIOS, restoring the F10 default settings and rebooting the system is still required after upgrading to the new BIOS.
Havent updated myself yet, but I will do it when I get home -
Not up yet, but I'm glad it's actually useful. That's not to say I'll actually be upgrading my processor or anything. The next upgrade to my laptop will be an SSD once the prices aren't insane.
How do I keep staying up until 3 am? I swear, I'm about to go to sleep at 1:30 and bam, I find something pointless to do. -
i see f-11 as newset bios ?? where is f-12 ??
-
It will be released soon, I receive newsletter on coming updates. I am actually surprised that is not up yet. Seems like HP says they did something, but their web team is a bit slow with updating the website.

Hello everybody!
I am looking for some people who game on Vista 32 bit have the same config as me - T7300, 4 GB of RAM, best if also 7K2 HDD. I would like to compare 64 bit Vista with 32 version in games.
I was thinking about using
Lost Coast
F.E.A.R.
Company of Heroes
as they have like a built in test,
and obviously 3DMark 06.
If you are willing to help me out and provide me with data from 32 system I will give rep
I think data from XP 32 and XP 64 can also be included so if you have one - I want it
Please PM me or reply here. Hope I can find somebody -
2 GB + 5400 RPM
Oh well
O btw... your sig should read "Make your 8510p quieter!" -
Sorry, don't have Vista or those games. I do have identical specs, but that doesn't help much.
-
You can upgrade to merom with F.11 bios, I went from a t7300 to a t9300 that i bought on ebay and it is working very well and I used arctic silver 5 thermal on the heat sink
-
Oye think I'm going to have to try out your guide Jin. Just played some TF2 tonight after a month or so off games due to work/school, and man my GPU temp was high. Even elevated (book lifting back end of laptop off ground to get better airflow) I was getting 80c, whereas I used to get 65c. Now I know it's summer and way hotter where I live but damn...big difference. Might have to try Destiny's AS5 guide too
I've got some lying around...wonder if it's still good after 4 years.
-
Jin07 and everybody else, I dont mind having the results from XP as it will give better comparision
-
maybe these results from honza will be of use for you:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3329106&postcount=186
i think his OS was XP64. -
Im pretty surprised with his low 3DM06 score especially that he has much better CPU than most of us. I will definatelly use them. I need to contact him anyway. Thanks for that schoko!
-
might be a minor setup optimization thing on his side. i guess he could tune up his xp a little bit and his machine would be way faster in this 3dmark test than ours.
i have around 3400 points with my modded driver in 3dmark06 / XP64.
so i guess he should have at least 200 points or so more than his testresults show. -
Just got my 8710w, and how come nobody mentioned how terrible the speakers are?!
My ears start bleeding after 30 minutes of music... -
Notebook speakers are not for audio sensitive people
They do the job. Plug your headphones or 2.1 set and you shouldn't be that dissapointed. and don't forget THIS IS A NOTEBOOKworkstation notebook
not a PC with Creative Audigy
-
Always had notebooks. But this is quite a shock, coming from a Macbook Pro.
Even my ancient IBM A22p was better than this! You'd have thought there'd been progress after ten years.
Good suggestion on the earphones, thanks. -
I have to say that the card delivers quite nice sounds though. It is just the speakers that are not so great. I personally game with my mp3 player earplugs - Senheiser CX300 and the sounds are actually very very good. I cant really compare to any PC music card now as I havent used it for ages, but I am kind of audiofile and can distingusih between 192kbps mp3 and 256 one.

Hello all --- long time no see.
I purchased my HP 8510P back in September. Shortly after (we're talking a day at most) I started having severe graphic card errors. It's been that way ever since. I've heard of many people having this problem, but I do NOT have the BSODs anymore like they did. I've already sent my laptop in for a quick repair back in October.. the 'solution' they assumed was going to fix the problem (and didnt) was to simply reinstall Windows. Didn't help. It's not a software error, I know that much.
It's random, doesn't matter what software I'm using or if I'm using any at all. The screen freezes, except for the mouse. It then goes black and takes a few minutes to pop back on. When it does, ATI displays a VPU Graphic Error with the option to send the report or not. Any graphics on screen are now distorted and a mess -- typically my browser is open and I have to close and open it again for it to look normal.
It's getting highly irritating. I'm frustrated and upset.
Since October, I have not installed ANY new updates to this computer as far as anything HP has released -- this includes none of the updated BIOS I've seen a few forum members talking about.
What should I do?. If I have to upgrade the BIOS, what do I need to know before doing so?. I know BIOS isn't something to be messed with and just want to know the risks first, or if it's pretty straightforward. I'm not a complete idiot at computers, but a cautious one.
Please help.
[P.S. Saw something about a mention of XP CDs. Is HP actually handing out the actual Windows disks now, not the HP recovery ones?] -
i had the same vpu error , update your bios and that will end the problem that and update the video drivers . you will notice a big improvement as your vid card is now underclocked . do a search
