BIOS UPDATE jitsun! What version is your bios now? If you have Vista Business you are eligable to get XP PRO 32 bit from HP. It will come as a normal CLEAN Windows installation disk and a drivers DVD. Give them a call :)

I just installed Pro in a virtual machine (over Kubuntu) and it went fine, but the Drivers DVD won't even start to install. Is that because the virtual machine is not an HP machine?

I want some of those apps.

Don'tcha just love the way HP locks you out of things, like preventing you from using 'unauthorized' cards?

    Shades of IBM...

I haven't used Winduhs in ten years, but am about to install XP "Pro" in a virtual machine.

How do I tell the XP installer to use 64 bit? I've set up the virtual machine to expect XP Pro 64bit. Does the Winduhs installer install according to the 'hardware'? If not, how do you tell it 64bit?

there is no way to "tell" the installer to use 64 bit. 32 and 64 bit are separate versions of windows. either you have xp32 or you have xp64 bit( a derivate from server2003). but they are not available in one installation.

Alright then, it seems like the next question would be obvious:

How do I know whether I have 64bit?

The CD is not labeled 32bit or 64bit, and ControlPanel|System doesn't give a hint either.

Never having used XP before, I have no idea where to look.

if your os does not explicitly tell it´s 64 bit you have the 32 bit version installed.

xp 64 does explicitly show up during startup, in the system properties and you would see it in the explorer. there are program forders( for 64 bit programms) and x86 program folders for 32 bit programs.

you would know if you had installed xp64......

    Hi,

Been trying to find some help for the 8510p with regards to the optical bay. I'd like to put a second hard drive in there, do HP do an option where you can remove the optical drive and replace with a hard drive caddy (seen this on some other latops)? Would be so useful, can anyone advise?

    Cheers,
    Graeme.

    Hello friends,

Recently I noticed that a process named PSDrt.exe is sucking up quite a bit of RAM. It's currently my 2nd highest application @ 65mb (just behind svchost), and the resource monitor lists it having a total of 184mb committed! Jeez!

The description is: PSD Runtime Application
The location is: C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Embedded Security Software

I do not recall this process using so much RAM before. I honestly don't even remember seeing it, but when Vista is running 70 processes I don't keep track of them all like I did in XP :p

Furthermore, I haven't installed/updated anything HP-related lately. Nothing even security-related either. In fact except for Diablo II and maybe Intervideo WinDVD player (couldn't get DVDs playing with anything else :( ), I haven't installed ANYTHING in at least a month.

Virus, spyware scans show my system clean. Still on Vista SP1 behind a router firewall, AVG and the Vista software firewall like I have been since first boot.

Google has proven less than helpful, with nothing but vague summaries of PSDrt.exe. The fact that it's an HP file makes me think it's been installed since day 1, but why it's using so much RAM I have no idea...

edit: further investigation (checking out the HP ProtectTools Security Manager which I never use and only keep because I'm still not sure if it you have to have it installed to have the HDD protector thing work) yields this information from the program:

Embedded Security Personal Secure Drive Runtime:
    File name = PSDRT.EXE
    Version = 3.00.1335.00

But if I never enabled the embedded security, why is it on, let alone using so much memory? HMM!

I think it may just be a part of HP ProtectTools itself, specifically the drive encryption. When I ran a search for that process, I got stuff telling me that it's Infineon Personal Secure Drive. Also, I don't have that process on my laptop. Furthermore, yes, you can have HP 3D DriveGuard Monitor WITHOUT the entire HP ProtectTools. Currently, the drive guard is the only HP program that I'm running. I also know it works since it has protected my HD already. Granted, it didn't really need protecting, though I could have dropped it. I unplugged my laptop and started to move it while it was still on, so the drive guard turned off my HD or whatever to protect it.

about the temps, well that seems about normal to me.

we had a few temperature readings here for the hd 2600 in the 8510p. maybe you´d wanna read the ocing thread on the hd2600. in there you will find the max clocks for ocing and temperatures from different users.

I just ordered my 8510p so I thought I'd post in here and let my other thread die a quiet death. I do have a few questions to those that ordered online though. How long did you have to wait until shipment/delivery? And where can I find this information? I got my order confirmation, but it says nothing about an estimated delivery date. When I try to check my order status, it tells me I am not in the system.

Do I just wait and guess when it will arrive? Were you all able to check your status as to when it will ship/arrive?

hmm I generally use it to log into windows. You can also set the device so that when you open a certain type of file, it will require to either type in your password or scan your finger print. Just go into HP protect tools and go down to Credential manager, there you should see all the options.

    Guys,

I am thinking of buying the 8510P from Ebay for $725 including shipping
and then upgrading to 3GB Ram. The guy has 100% positive feedback so I feel fine.

He told be its a refurb.

Should i pull the trigger? Responses would be highly appreciated.

this is the short summary of whats in it

    HP 8510p Duo2 T7300 2.0GHz/120GB/2GB/DVDRW/15.4WSXGA
    RADEON HD 2600 256MB Wi-Fi. Bluetooth. 3 YEAR WARRANTY

The T61's cooling system is pretty good. I would suggest undervolting the T7300 and perhaps also underclocking the HD2600 when not in need to minimise the heat produced. But I don't find mine noisy, I certainly cannot hear the fan unless I am in a quiet room.

the graphics card is no issue, i can assure you that. my 8510p has to work quite a lot at it´s limit using programs like rhino, maya, am rendering a lot and i use some of the adobe programs.
the 3d models i am producing are mostly very complex ( architecture) and while my 8510p is rendering i do the postwork in photoshop, do my layouts or draw architecture plans simultaneously...

all in all the laptop does not get very hot. i just can recommend it.

and my question is the same as johnnyt´s :
what do you intend to use the laptop for ?

Well I used to game a lot , but have not in the last year. So it will be good to have it, buts its not a deal breaker. Since last year I have been doing all my gaming on Xbox 360, have not had time to play computer games a lot.

If i have the video card to play games I will play a few not a lot, but if its not there I can live without it.

It will be for every day use, movies and little work in photoshop.

the hd2600 will be more than enough for your demands.

keep in mind you are spending the money on a business class laptop. it is very solid and an absolute lightweight for the performance it delivers.
i´d take the deal if i was in your place.
