After hanging out with the freshman and their 8510w's at my school, I can tell you right now that the fan is much louder than on the previous nw8440 (nc8430). I think it has to do with the revised vent layout more than the fan itself, as the 8510 series and the previous 8400 series both sound the identical otherwise (same pitches/tones when running); the difference is that the level of noise generated by the fan on the 8510 series is roughly twice as loud as the fan on the 8400 series running at the same speed. And I've heard people on this forum returning their nc8430's because they were too loud, go figure!
That said, the 8510p/w series is much better at thermal management than the nc8430/nw8440. I know my system idles around the low to mid 50s, shooting to the low to mid 60s under light use, and going into the 80s under heavy use (the highest I've seen was 87C). AFAIK, the 8510 series will only go to the mid-to-high 60s under heavy use/gaming (according to an earlier post by Johnny T, IIRC. Correct me if I'm wrong!)
So, there appears to be a trade off here between the older 8400 series and the 8510 series. Fan noise vs. internal temps.
Just some observations....

Well there is a far distance between the 8510p and the 8510w as the 8600GT based FX570M runs far warmer than the HD2600. I actually find the Toshiba 250GB hdd in my 8510p alot louder than my fan...
I can't say the fan is quiet, but I wouldn't say its beyond acceptable either. Also I have set the BIOs to keep teh fan on at all times when plugged into AC.
AS for temps, I can't speaker for the 8510w but for the p, with undervolting my T8300 (45nm) idles at 35C at standard room temp, 50C or so during load, max out at mid 60s. GPU wise as the thermal probe is never correct, I suspect it to go up to around 70s in comparison to possible 90s with the 570m. Hdd, between mid 20s to 30C.
What are your specs asifp? The fan noise shouldn't be noticeable unless TZ_2 (in HWmonitor, might be named differently fro your notebok) go above 40/45C (cant remember exactly). -
well I will get a true test of my laptop when I am back home after vacations. Right now I am just using it for e-mail and updating with all the latest security stuff.
I must add so far it was loud once during installation and once when collecting system information. Not noticeable at all during e-mail or surfing.
My laptop is
Core2 Duo
T7300 2.0 Ghz
2 GB Ram. Will be adding another GB when I swtich to Vista Business
Radedon HD 2600 -
Oh and since the T7300 is 65nm it will not run as cool as the 45nm peryns.
-
-
well for that price you still have made a very good deal. a lot of the shops here in germany still trying to sell the hp 8510w and p for the same price as they would have cost about a year ago. so your laptop does cost around 1300 - 1400 euros. thats njust a few bucks below the price of a new 8530 w or p.
and btw, your 7300 won´t get that hot. i have a t7700 and even after 2 hours of rendering the notebook is warm, but not burning hot. the only real warm area seems to be where the cardslot is located. it seems to have a metal case and that thing is heating up a little, because it´s beneath the heat pipes.
but all in all the cooling system seems to work very well. no problem here mate. -
I think my Toshiba 250Gb hdd might be failing.
-
As a reference, my Hitachi 100Gb 7200RPM HD that came with my nw8440 was always loud when it came the clicking noises it made, but I can just barley hear the HD spinning. Oddly, it doesn't support any S.M.A.R.T attributes. -
I was talking about the spinning. I wouldn't say its louder than the fan but its is definitely far louder than it should be. And I think its failing/ on the way to failing because, last night I heard 2 very loud screeches which could only have came front the HDD.

Maybe this is not best sub forum, but I know here will meet this notebook specialists... I have installed windows 7= most of drivers found automatically, some of them I have fixed- only two unknown: PCI serial port and PCI simple communications controller... What should be that...
-
Really? The only unknown on mine were the finger print reader driver.
-
hey guys , long time no look at forum , question . C an i put a x9000 cpu in my 8510 ? Got the latest bios , everything updated , but comp is getting slow compared to my desktop so it's a mew 8530 , or the cpu mentioned .
Will it fit/work on the 8510 ?
thanks ! -
Those sound like the AMT Serial-Over-LAN (SOL) port and the modem port, most likely.
-
Yes thanks, those were two AMT drivers, I have installed them after changing compatibility in properties to Vista (initially they said not for this OS)...
Here I must mention mine bigest problem with seven (everything other is perfect)- screen cant go off ever, even when I force screen shutdown it comes back in next seccond... Any idea??? -
I have solved screen cant switch on problem- UAC must be switched on...
Another question about security tools by HP- I dont want to install all those stuff, just fingerprint log on feature.. But it forces me to install security manager first with ALL components... What is solution for minimal install, just fingerprint... -

Hi, this is my first post after finding the forum a few days ago. I see you know the 8510p very well and hope you can help me.
I got my 8510p last summer and I am pretty happy with it. However, I'd like to get a little more juice from it. One thing I like is to plug it to my 32" full HD TV and watch HD movies from the hard drive. The problem is that at 1920x1080 the image stutters just a little bit. Can I do something to solve this? (I understand that HD is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive).
Another question is that every time I plug the TV I need to change the frequency from the CCC. The TV (Sony 32W4000) identifies itself as a 60Hz device, but the image only displays properly it I set the CCC to 50Hz. The problem is that CCC won't record the setting and I need to change it every time. Any suggestion?
Finally, I'd also like to know if there is any guide to OC the 8510p. I've read that this was suggested in the forum (along with many other messages on OC), but couldn't find it.
Well, any help will be appreciated. Thanks,
Carlos -
1) That should be a codec decoder problem, I am using Coreavc (have to pay, probably alternatives) at the moment and its been working fine every since.
2) Have you try updating the video drivers?
3) What are you looking to OC? To be honest there is no point in OC'ing anything. -
Thanks for the quick and direct reply.
1) I've installed Coreavc and it has improved (though it is not perfect... I wonder if it can be). I played with a number of codecs before (VLC, ffdshow, MS, and others) and I was getting the best results for HD with PowerDVD 8 codec and Haali splitter using Zoom Player. Now with Coreavc it seems to get better, so maybe there is an even better combination. Any advice? I think the processor is a T8300 so there shouldn't be a problem with processing power, should it? When you say you can watch HD fine with Coreavc, are you using a 1920x1080 monitor?
2) This is another story. After your suggestion, I have updated the driver but no luck there. Before updating, evertyhing worked quite well, apart from the 50Hz setting not sticking in CCC. At 1920x1080 and 50Hz the big screen would look great and the laptop would also work in the same resolution, focussing on a 1280x800 window of the complete desktop (it'd move around following the cursor).
Then I updated. I could never get a good image at 1920x1080. It would always show like at 60Hz before (poor quality, no one to one mapping). If I set the two screens as before, the max resolution would be 1280x720 (poor image in both). And the 50Hz setting wouldn't stick either.
So I went back to the previous version and got back the one to one mapping at 1920x1080 50Hz (uff!). However, something has gone wrong in the process because now I can only get it if I don't use the laptop screen. If I use both screens (in clone mode) the TV shows at 1920x1080@60Hz and the laptop at 1280x800. Anything I can do to go back as before?
3) No OC recommended? OK... but what about all previous posts in the forum?
Carlos -
... Should I disable the wireless LAN or the anti-virus in order to get full performance when playing HD from the hard disk?
Carlos -
Yup, in fact I have a T8300 and a WUXGA just like you.
try Fiddling around with the options in CCC, or enabling hardware acceleration in you media player.
-
I use VLC to watch hd video off the hard drive , i watch on a 42 inch tv at 1920x1080 , with nero showtine it stutters , plays fine with vlc . this is with the t-7300 cpu and ati "5600" .
-
heheh the V5600.
i have gone back to 2600 though, as I have no use for it at the moment.
Planet earth 1080p works perfectly here. -
How about the birds scene at minute 1:34 of Planet Earth - From Pole to Pole. No stutter? No cuts in the sound?
The other question is how do I perform a clean install of the graphics controller? Can I uninstall it and leave the machine without any graphics controller before installing it again? I am a little worried of things getting worse (loosing video) -
Check the gaming forum for graphics drivers install and uninstall instructions. I get no stuttering at all in XP, still a few things in the Windows 7 beta. Probably because I havent installed or configured anything yet.
-
thaks -
No not at all, just wanted that little extra gaming performance without OC'ing.
And right now I am dual booting XP and W7 beta, have been spending most of my time in W7 lately.
-
I'm dual booting w-7 as well , W-7 found all the drivers , everything works very well .
how big a perf hit am I taking sticking with 5600 ?
I had a 3-d mark 06 score of 3290 , would it be higher ? -
Not much, just stick with V5600 drivers especially if you are gona be using them.
-
Hi guys!
I wonder if you all have noticed that the colors of the 8510p screen are "greyish" or not saturated enough. Im studying graphic design and I needed to calibrate the screen properly so I used the spyder3 calibration tool from my school. I was struggling with the colors quite a lot before this and therefore I desided to share the calibration profile for everyone.
So, if you want proper colors to your screen, download this
RS 8510p color profile
-dukens -
ooo I might try that. Although colour settings will vary from screen to screen as you screen might be from a different manufacturer. Mine is a Samsung WUXGA screen.
-
Huh. There's no change at all for me. Good work anyway.
-
no change for me either
-
same...here
-
The screens might be individual then.. at least for me the change was quite noticable. The calibration software allows you to watch photos before and after calibration and the colors are really greyish and plain before the calibration. Also when doing design work with the uncalibrated screen the colors look really over saturated on a well calibrated screen on a another computer.
Try disabling the profile, watch colorful photos and then enable the profile back on and watch the photos again.
dukens -
I used Windows 7's self calibration tool before. I Guess my eyes aren't so bad after all.
Though it might make a bigger difference in XP.
-
Ok, now it makes sense if you are not seeing any difference. It seems that you need to have the datacolor (spyder) software installed to activate the profile.
-
What are advantages of 8530p to 8510p... Is there any sense to upgrade...
I have saw friends 8530w- build is excellent, speed also but screen (1680) IS DARK AGAIN... -
-
sorry for pushing the topic again, but did you find a solution for your touchpad problem? i do get the same synaptic screen when i open the mouse-preferences (no devices listed).
btw i also tried to boot a live linux - touchpad also not working (think it could be a hardware problem or even a bios problem)
pls tell me if you managed to get it working -
Hey all. I am an owner of 8510p for more than a year now and I haven't done any hardware updates due to lack of time. Now I have some questions regarding my laptop.
1.) The most problematic issue is loudness of the vent and overheating (left side of the laptop - from A,S,D buttons to SPACE including touchpad). Actually, this problem encouraged me to register on this page. I read last 5 posts in this thread and realized I am not the only one mentioning this. What are the concrete solutions to that? Can I open the laptop and remove the inside dust without loosing the warranty? Should I buy a cooling station? What are your recommendations?
2.) My blue trackpoint in the middle of a keyboard is not firmly placed (it is moving wierdly since I bought a laptop). Is it worth to fix this under warranty or is it better to buy any other (better) trackpoint? Is it possible to remove this one without opening the laptop and place a new one on it?
3.) Next thing are upgrades. I have T7500 c2d which is enough I think, but I have 2x1GB of ram. As I am running Vista Bus, maybe I should upgrade the memory, what do you think? Will this speed up my system? What kind of rams should I buy - may I replace them by myself or should I take the laptop to service where they will do that for me? Do I lose a warranty when I open my laptop? Are there any other hardware upgrades possible?
Thanks for any replies, maybe I will come up with some other questions -
1) Have you updated the bios at all? If not, that is very important to do. Yes you can open the notebook without voiding the warranty. There are guides on here that specifically deals with the 8510p (search it!). Undervolting (guide in hardware section) will also help. I am having no heating problems with mine.
2) I am actually using a red thinkpad eraser head trackpoint with my 8510p, I bought some from ebay and just swapped out the old one.
3) 2GB of ram should be fine. I am on 3 GB and its pretty nice, though not a necessity in my opinion. Upgrading ram and hard drive will not void your warranty. -
I updated bios now. It was 1 year old. Anyway, I didn't notice any changes in temperature or sound of a vent after flashing bios.
Then I checked my processor a little bit. The usual temperature (right now - just browsing the web) of my T7500 is 53°C (the cores' temps are 60°C). When I wrote a program with an endless loop and run it temperature rised up to 77°C (it took about 5-10 minutes) and the vents became very loud. Then I closed my program and run HD video. After another minute laptop was suddenly turned off. This only happened to me once till now - when I try to play GTA4.
I don't know if this is normal, perhaps it is? Or do I really have to do something with my vent (clean it, change it, use a paste or sth.)? -
maybe you wanna have a look into your notebook and see if the exhaust is blocked by dust. after more than one year your notebook might have gathered enough dust to block the exhaust, and the hot air can not be transported outside of the chassis.
if you need detailed procedures and pictures you may wanna check the repair and maintenance guide available at hp :
http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01550200/c01550200.pdf
the procedure itself is quite simple actually:
- turn off your notebook
- remove the battery
- remove the two screws on the back that have the keyboard symbol printed next to the screws
- unlock the keyboard by pulling back the four pins on top of the keyboard
- now you can lift the keyboard at it´s top end ( don´t pull too hard, since a short cable ( on the backside around that spot where the space bar is) is still connecting keyboard and the system board )
- clean the exhaust ( canned air works quite good here) -
Shoko , you still have the 64 bit drivers for ati 2600 to fire gl 5600 ? I made the switch to 64 bit xp and could use them .
thanks -
hi jerry,
of course i still have the drivers. i will upload them in the next few days and send you the link. just don´t expect them to be online before tuesday, i´m on vacation now...
best -
no problem ! have a good time , when ever you have the time . Thanks again ! Can't wait to run the benchmarks with drivers 6 gb ram and the x-9000 !
-
hi jerry,
sent you a pm with the link to the firegl driver for xp 64.
am curious if the cpu and the 6 GB of ram are influencing the specview benchmark... -
i wil check them out later this week , I am interested to see how much , or if there will be a difference . I'm hoping there will be a major increase , I know with video encoding my times cut by at least 1/3 . The only thing slowing down encoding burning is the 8x DVD burner on the laptop .
benchmarks soon
And Thanks again ! -
On windows 7 RC one driver problem:
/ACPI/HPQ006...
Any idea???
HP 8510p available!
