Finally got my system up and running.
-
-
My OS DVDs say HP all over them but when I reinstalled Vista I had not a single program on there but the MS stuff. I had to use the HP DVD to restore all drivers/programs.
-
The problem was that the ATI drivers available from HP included an ATI audio program which interfered with the audio. Once I figured this out, I simply chose the custom install option when installing the drivers and only installed the display driver and net 2.0. Next up, making the text thicker so it's easier to read.

Last question before I order. This was a key factor in making my decision so I'm so glad I can get everyone's opinions/advice. These forums have been really helpful for me in making my first laptop purchase -- very nice responce to some of my more laughable 'newbie' questions.
Cheers! -
where can this system be found the cheapest?? are there any coupon codes for this system?? id like to find something other than my dell thanks
-
Jitsun: Yes I was able to chose what to install individually.
zfactor: I bought mine here
http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop...01000100U014_BN28031P.shtml&order_id=!ORDERID!
Have yet to see it much cheaper anywhere else. I think buy.com had it for $1390 or something. -
Have any of you guys tried using the hdmi on your laptop for an hdtv? I'd like to just be able to use this laptop to play moves in 720p on my tv, but I doubt that that is possible. All I have right now is a ps2 to play movies which is pretty bad.
-
nice price for that but how does the 2600 perform compared to the 8600gt?? i may be interested in that system
-
arghh their web site is killing me i have no idea how to find the specs i want.. how the heck do you find what you want there..
-
It slightly less powerful than the 8600 GT.
-
-
any 3dmark tests you have ran yet?? that would have everything id want escapt for the t7500 cpu but thats not a huge concern if it was as good or better than the 8600gt
-
I think you can get the high end CPUs if you customize. IIRC they even had the new processors that came out the 2.6 I think it was.
-
yes but im trying to stay under 1500$ as far under as i can for these specs.. its tough to do i guess, i was about to order a 9500 and deal with the gpu but they took the 30% off away so that killed it for me
-
The HD2600 performs on par with the 8600M-GT. This model will outperform the Dell 1520, and perform below the Asus G1s and the MBP. However, it's underclocked and has pretty new drivers, so performance on it would only improve.
-
lol on the same system with a 7500... they are only 5$ cheaper than buying direct from hp.. not worth it imo.. almost 1800$
-
Cany any of You tell me how is it with keys for Vista?? Ive never used that thing, and ie. if I will do a clean install do I need to register the OS or type any keys or sthing??
-
on my 8510w I did a fresh install of Vista with no need to enter a key using the supplied HP 32bit Vista Disk.

Here is a preview...of my...re-view?
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9127/3dmark06ah2.png
Because I know everyone is just dying to know !
(1280x1024, Vista Business, GPU still underclocked at 500/450 thanks to HP)
edit: 8600 GT DDR2 = 2900-3000, 8600 GT GDDR3 = 3600-3700 at full clocks, so right now underclocked we're right smack in the middle.
edit2: I don't know why Futuremark keeps calling my HD 2600 an X2600, but oh well -
wow that is pretty impressive compared to the 8600gt.. nice. i may have to look further into this system i guess.. wish it was a bit cheaper though.. how are the screens on these systems.. it may in the end be worth it for the 200$ extra over my 1520 (granted i have a better config with my 1520) to get one of these and be done with this mess..
-
also these i guess are in stock now so no waiting for them?? maybe ill give dell the 8 days they requested for a replacment it seems on that site they have A TON of those in stock and im sure they will still be around that price in 8-10 days.. if i see the dell ships with the sec screen again or the auo i had in the first place i will not even accept it ill just simply dent the shipment and send it on its way

Since there's no s-video out but only HDMI and I found this ooold tv with scart / s-video and the yellow white red thingy, I was wondering if I could connect to it through the VGA-out port? Or are there any other devices that do things like this?
-
im pretty sure they have a convertor out there that will convert s-video to dvi and visa versa but im sure its pretty expensive also
wow i just saw the 8510p has a standard 3 year warranty also.. that could make some difference to me right there -
are u positive that there is no s-video in 8510p?? Im pretty sure there is, but not sure tho.

Could anyone assist me in the decision between an 8510w/p?
Sigh. I was going to order this before but it's been bothering me. If the 8510w is significantly better, I'll get it. But when I say significant, I meant enough to value the $510-difference decision.. Savings is savings - it's not something I can just throw around but at the same time I want it to last.
I'm not a big, huge gamer but I'd like to play around with a few games on highspec.. I'm just not sure if that means the difference between w/p or not.
I'm a city girl that's mostly concerned with business matters, but that doesn't mean I might not enjoy the occassional MMORPG or two -- no big Call of Duty or whatever the new shooters are though.
Just WoW here and there, a few of the cute Korean MMORPGS.. Hey, I'm being honest.
Am I going for overkill with the 8510w?. I'd like to save if I can, but I want the best that I can get right now -- that's suited for the purposes I said above. -
If I was U Id get the 'p' and just add 1GB of RAM. HD2600 will be sufficient for Your need good couple of years I would think.
-
Go for the "p"! HD2600 is probably almost better than the FX570M since the FX one isn't designed for games. Also the drivers of the HD2600 aren't fully developped yet, so you can expect another improvement plus you could easyl overlock it...if i had the choice between HD2600 and FX570M i'd go for the 2600 (also like ati more than nvidia
)
The only other significant difference is the display resolution, right? 1920x1200 on a 15,4'' would be too much for me anyway. And for playing games, such a high resolution isn't usefull at all.
So is it worth the 510$ difference? - Never... -
Either way, you can't go wrong with either of them, though. The 8510p, I will agree, is a somewhat better deal. -
If you find a good coupon you can get the T61p for only a few hundred (maybe $150-200) more than the 8510p. The only difference is the GPU, but if it will make that much of a difference in your purchasing decision then it might be worth investigating.
As an aside, the HD 2600 easily handles WoW; I've done quite a bit of testing and will post it in my review this weekend. -
Do any of you guys have a good ICC color profile you wouldn't mind sharing? Or could you tell me how to alter one, since I forgot
-
hi im also stuck on dciding wether or not to get the 8510p/w but instead of $500+ difference its $280 difference or to me £140 and there no difference cos the specs will be the same in each model both at T7700 2.4 etc and comes with all the warranty. i aint doin no cad or nothing. i just want to play hardcore games at high settings. i hear people sayin u can use geforce drivers for gaming but no1 on different forums can seem to find or get some working. and the thing with the hd 2600 is cos it has better cooling u can over clock it better which im intrested to no in cos my laptop i currently use is a toshiba tecra m2 with nvidia graphics and it gets dead hot annoying lol. but i dont mind payin the difference for th "w" version. i just need to be convinced and sure myself which is cutting it for me.
any help appreciated. thanks -
8510p - T7300, 1 GB RAM (2 more coming later, just hasnt arrived yet) HD 2600
3dmark06 1280x1024 - 3306
Thats with Cat 7.9.
One small problem i have is there is a ton of flex from the ENTER key all the way up to the top right corner of the keyboard, enough to make a clicking sound when pressing backspace. Looks like ill have to get that looked at. Anyone else have that problem? -
-
I've got some flex in that area above the DVD drive also, but not enough to make extra noise. HP kind of blew it by putting those plastic spacers right over top of that area...
And damn, new drivers already? Now I feel like re-doing all those benchmarks... -
New ones dont really guarnatee that the point will go up. Check the release notes if there is anything about HD2600 added.
-
Those with the keyboard flex - Mine can be pushed down almost 1/8th of inch or so, a fair bit, is yours that bad? Feels like its something i should have looked at by HP
-
Have you guys had problems installing the new GPU drivers? I go to ATI's website and download them, then when I install it says the driver can't install because it can't "find a driver compatible with the current driver and/or OS." Something like that. I followed ATI's instructions about removing there stuff prior to the install, but still nothing.
Edit: Oh yeah, I can install the drivers that come with the update from HP's website, just not those from ATI's. Maybe ATI is trying to install in the wrong folder? -
Jin, you're on XP right? No GPU driver updates was the reason I didn't stick with XP. ATI's stock drivers won't work with mobility cards, so you have to modify them. But I was unable to find any mods which support the HD 2600 under XP, so I had to revert back to Vista.
http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/ is the mod I used to get the Cats working for my mobility card. As you can see they don't support the HD 2600 yet under XP and have no current eta -
Dang. Well I don't mind the screen blanks that much, but they shouldn't happen. Maybe I'll double check with HP. I figure I paid for a service so I might as well use it. Plus, I REALLY don't want to use vista.
-
Jin Vista is not bad at all. Once you tweak it to your liking, Vista is the better OS than XP. Its just more of a resource hog.
-
to Jin07: I aslo wanna buy 8510p with 1280*800 screen under XPP. could you tell me your feeling about the screen? such as brightness, contrast, and viewing angle. because I'll use 8510P to watch movies sometimes. and i have customrize it on hp.com, 1555$, so exspensive!
to Ackeron: could you post a everest test on 8510P's gpu? because I saw that the H2600 in 8510P solden in HongKong is core/mom:300/400*2=800 -
First off, the major problem with the display, as of right now, is that there are times when the screen will freeze, go blank, then come back online. This doesn't last more than about 10 seconds, but it can be annoying. Hopefully this will be fixed down the line, which it probably will. I'm also working on trying to install the new video drivers, again hopefully, this will fix that problem. The horizontal viewing angles aren't that bad, just not great. The vertical viewing angles are somewhat worst. Overall though, the viewing angles isn't that big of a problem for me since I just open the laptop to where I want it automatically now. Then sometimes I might adjust it a little if I move. As long as you aren't moving around too much, the viewing angles won't be much of a problem. It will take a couple minutes to find the sweet spot for you and then its just minor adjustments when you move into a new position. The screen is plenty bright for me. It's substantially brighter than my old x1000. The colors also seem more accurate. Again, while comparing to my old laptop, the whites seem yellow on the old laptop and white on this one. I do wish the contrast was adjustable, but I haven't found the setting. I wish the blacks were a little darker than what they are. Also, even though both this and my old screen were 1280x800, the text on this one is smaller and thinner. I'm still getting used to this. The screen should be fine for watching movies. It won't look as good as a WUXGA, but you shouldn't expect it to. Yes, customizing my laptop was horrendously expensive. If this wasn't the only business laptop that offered a good GPU with a WXGA, I wouldn't have gotten it. Nevertheless, despite the problems I really like this laptop. It's built well, stable most of the time, and is extremely fast and responsive. Boot-up time is amazingly fast. On my old laptop it took about 1-2 mins, on here it's more like 20-30 seconds. I have literally walked to the kitchen to get some water and came back with it up and running. Just to warn you, this is with a clean install and during the clean install of XP Pro I did run into some problems. If you want, I'll post up what I did.
-
jin07: thank you for your answer! I customized 8510p without os, without os label, because i have a xp pro cd. so i wanna make a clean install of xpp, and download the drivers on hp.com. what problems will i meet? how to fix it? thanks again for answering.
-
I just got mine less than a week ago and I also have the keyboard problem. I noticed it right away and thought i had it fixed by pressing the whole thing down firmly, but after a while it kept popping up again.
Since I didn't want to wait another 6 Weeks or so, I decided to not send it back, but try to fix the problem myself. On the top-right corner there is a patch of glue beneath the keyboard, but nothing on it. In other places there are square patches of tape to hold the keyboard, so i figured they just forgot this one spot.
Anyways...I put a few pieces of tape under the keyboard, so that now it doesn't move at all. The only problem left now is that it isn't level anymore.
This problem aside, I absolutely love this Laptop. The screen, the build quality, the speed of Vista on it and the graphics card are even better, than i anticipated.
I really don't understand why they screwed up securing the keyboard. Of all the things, this seems like the easiest problem to solve. ;-) -
Just noticed: Those of you that are having problems with the placement of fn- and ctrl-keys can switch them in bios.
-
First off, follow the guide for the XP install for the dv5000 (?) in the sticky. When you get to the video driver and its time to install it (sp36674) here's what you want to do. Begin like you normally would, opening the .exe file and what not. Until you get to the screen where it asks normal (recommended) install or the customized one. Pick the CUSTOMIZED one. Let me repeat, pick the CUSTOMIZED one. You'll then be taken to a screen with the little boxes and several options to check or uncheck. Only keep the net 2.0 and the display driver, unless you really want the Catalyst Control Center. The others will create a major conflict with the audio card on your laptop = no sound on your laptop. It took me a couple times to figure this out. The only way to fix it if you install the audio stuff on accident is to do another clean install
Also when doing a clean install, when you format just pick the quick option, it will save you 3 hours of needless waiting.
HP 8510p available!
