    Thanks crenneke. That worked perfectly.

One last small issue. When i did a clean install of Vista, everything is working fine and well but one thing. Quick Launch buttons don't show up on the screen when you use them. For example, when using the volume slider it works fine but i just dont see that display that comes up on the screen when using it. Same with when i adjust the screen brightness, it functions fine but i just cant see the it on the screen.

I installed the quick launch buttons driver off the included DVD, as well as tried the ones on the website. Any ideas?

Gonna order mine on friday :)

I would go for Corsair or OCZ cause i've never heard of Transcend. OCZ do some really nice overclocking ram, so high quality seems to be a standard with this brand.

But will You be overclocking Your CPU?? is it worth it?? Get something with lifetime warranty, like Kingston and You wont notice any difference anyway.

Of course it's not worth it to overclock the CPU/Ram in a notebook, but the thing is that good overclocking ram equals good quality ram! And if you haven't notice: All these ram have lifetime warranty...

I know they do. But I also know that they are much more expensive. Ive also been hesitating to buy some high quality RAMs but Ive been convinced that ist not worth for the money You are paying, at least not for notebooks. PCs are different cup of tea.
What performance difference would have give U OCZ compared to Kingston Value rams??

Are there any test around?? I would be interested in comparision between them.

    2GB ram

    with a 3d mark 06 score of 3424.

So how did Aceron do his test in that resolution. It doesnt matter if You have widescreen as the monitor is still capable of doing it in that resolution. At least it should be. What is the rest of Your config??

I personally bought the OCZ 2gb stick. Just installed it, my WEI went from 4.5 to 4.7 in the memory category. Other than that I havent done any other testing.

No, a wide screen 1280x800 panel does not physically have enough vertical pixels to do a test in 1280x1024. However a widescreen 1680x1050 panel can perform the test in 1280x1024.

Ya i only had the stock 1gb stick that came with it. I know not much should be read into the WEI scores but tripling the RAM only raises it by 0.2?

Don't even pay attention to the WEI. It is not a benchmark program. If you want to know how the RAM would affect the overall performance I'd run the PCmark05 program. I think that's the right one.

has anyone overclocked the ati right now ?

as i've already posted in another thread, the guy with his toshiba a200xx with a hd2600 256mb has overclocked his core to 700mhz and his memory to 570mhz (seems to be he has only gddr2) and got 4100 3dmarks with his 1,8ghz core 2 duo cpu. ! and according to him the temperature of the gpu was only ~53 degrees after 2 hours playing.

Well I know I used ATI Tool (or was it ATI Tray Tool?)'s auto-overclocking feature to determine the maximum clock speeds for my GPU. I left it for 5 hours and it was still trying to find the max when I returned.

I didn't have time to wait so I canceled it. Dumbest part is that the program didn't even tell me how far it got after all that time. I've been too pissed off to try O/Cing since :p

The Find Max Core feature won't work well unless you underclock the mem, and the Find Max Mem feature won't work well unless you underclock the core. In general, you want to sit and watch it, and as soon as it starts downclocking you know you've hit your upper limit for either the core or the mem (whichever your testing).

I dont have time to run the benchmarks this week, but possibly later. Dual channel wont matter very much, its really only 5-10% performance improvement. Having the extra gig rather than dual channel GREATLY outweighs the advantages of dual channel.

Isn't the best way to overclock anyway...do a 10% increase and than go in ~10mhz steps (at the beginning you can do higher steps...) running 3dmark between. If you've found your limit, run about 2h 3dmark to be sure that it's absolutely stable

Haven't been keeping up, but just to make sure.. you guys are talking about the WXGA option, correct (1280x800)?. The WSXGA+'s normal resolution is 1680 x 1050, isn't it?.

Anyways -- quick question -- does HP SMB charge tax?.

I've heard HP only charges tax in certain states but wasn't sure if that was just Home/Home Office.

Below is some of the config info cut and paste from a DxDiag report. I have added in stuff not included like HDD detail and Memory slot info. I guess it would be possible to do the test at the higher resolution wth an external monitor, however I do not have one. Oh and I only have the demo version of 3dmark06. Another thing, is according to my supplier and HP this model is Vista only. I managed to organise a copy of XP for it from HP after throwing my toys out the cot about my DOA NC8430 and having to wait 4 weeks for a replacement.

I just ran the test again with only the 1GB ram that it came with and got a score of 3419.

Does that seem right? 3419 with 1GB ram, 3424 with 2GB ram. Same processes etc running on both tests.

Which test, 3dmark06? If that's what you're talking about, then it makes sense. If your card has at least 256mb of dedicated VRAM, then 3dmark06 isn't really system RAM intensive very much at all.

Now I dont know what to do really. Get just 1GB of extra RAM and than sell them both after a year or two and get two 2GB chips when 64bit apps will be more available??? Or get 2GB instead 1GB and have 3GB w/o Dual Channel?? What do You think??

For most uses, 2GB is sufficient for now. However, since it's quite likely that you're going to upgrade anyhow, I see no reason not to go ahead and get the 2GB SODIMM now.

    I found this today:
I hope it will be handy for everybody

Some benchmarks of different notebook memory modules:
    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Print.aspx?ArticleId=17456
If mods believe this should be posted as a separate thread by all means do it.

How soon can we expect the 64bit appz to be widly available?? So I could take advantage of full 4GB of RAM?? I also have a A-Data PD7 4GB flash drive with data rates of 28/19 MB/s [read/write] or even faster (dont remember now) that supports ReadyBoost for Vista. Would it give it an extra bonus??

Taking advantage of 4GB of RAM has nothing to do with whether you're using 64-bit apps or not. What uses do you have that would require 4GB of RAM?

And no, ReadyBoost is nothing like adding extra RAM to the system, it acts more like a secondary hard drive cache (kind of like on a hybrid drive).

3D rendering & CAD/CAM [Rhino, Pro Engineer, Solid Works, 3D Studio Max etc] and Photoshop, I generally perform quite a lot of multitasking jobs. Would come handy if I was rendering at the same time and still could do my presentation/photoshop without loosing much of the rendering performance.

Ive read a bit about this whole new thing in Vista [prefetching, caching or something like that - Ive posted a thread in Windows section] and know about ReadyBoost now. Seems like a marketing catch ;) who will use 512MB of RAM with Vista nowadays??

According to my pricing, the T7300 2 GHz machine with 1 GB RAM costs $1400 and the T7500 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM costs $2000?? Am I correct in assuming that the 0.2 GHz improvement is not worth $600? Am I missing something?

Also, does this laptop come with any kind of a docking option? Thanks for all help-I'm close to pulling the trigger on this one!

Destiny - RE your query on RAM.

I just ordered a 8510p with just 1GB. My reasoning was that a 2nd stick of 1GB from HP would add $130 and I can order a 2GB stick for less then $100. In time should I want upgrade to 4GB for 64bit Vista by purchasing a 2nd 2GB stick, it will almost certainly cost less then current prices.

The price premium is not worth it, no. The processor difference will be negligable in most tasks, and you can upgrade the RAM yourself for less than that.

Thanks and last questions: How do you dock this laptop to a 20" monitor? Is there a docking station to save time and connector wear? Is anyone besides me doing this?

Do I take it that nobody here has any concerns about the ATI 2600 card being able to support all current and future games for the next couple of years? Thanks for your comments!

I'll try this again...anyone else have this problem??:

When i did a clean install of Vista, everything is working fine and well but one thing. Quick Launch buttons don't show up on the screen when you use them. For example, when using the volume slider it works fine but i just dont see that display that comes up on the screen when using it. Same with when i adjust the screen brightness, it functions fine but i just cant see the it on the screen.

I installed the quick launch buttons driver off the included DVD, as well as tried the ones on the website. Any ideas?

Yeah. I know. Ive checked the prices for me and currently a 2GB Corsair stick is 3 times more expensive than the equivalent 1GB from them. Shame but I will carry on with 2GB of RAM for time being. Maybe looking forward to upgrade after a year or so.

Any thoughts about docking to an external monitor (how to do it) and the graphics card? It seems the graphics card is having some problems with common programs. Can we assume these problems will go away soon?

Sorry but these are my final questions before making a purchase decision. Thanks!

Update: I found a docking station on the hp web site: http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.asp?sku=2946666&extended=1 which supposedly works for all HP's business laptops.

I just bought a HP 8510p yesterday and I can't say I'm entirely impressed. I'm a stickler for screen quality, and guess what? Expecting the WSXGA screen to be brighter/sharper than the one on my previous 14.1" 6515b (which was utterly superb... the only good thing about the machine IMHO), not only was I dissapointed to notice the screen to be noticeably dimmer, whites left a lot to be desired, being slightly pinkish under all light conditions. What's more, left and right bottom corners are improperly lit (?). Another thing I noticed, the machine tends to produce a loud rattling/clicking sound whenever the system boots. Upon further inspection, the sound comes from the DVD-RW drive area (might actually be the fans?).

    Are these "problems" normal?

Read this review, he noted the very same issues, they must be quirks that model has.

Just ordred mine today after i saw the 8510p in personal! There were also a T61p and a MacBook Pro at the notebook show. I compared the Screen with the one from the T61p and there weren't any big differences..than i took a look at the MacBook Pro...the screen of the 8510p/T61p was just ridiculous beside the one from the MacBook :) And so with the design: While the T61p's design is just ****, the 8510p isn't that bad, but nothing to compare with the wonderful MacBook Pro :)
But: I don't want to use MacOS since i'll also do some gaming plus i defently won't pay 1000 Dollars more for a better screen/design. The T61p was also 400 dollars more expensive with the same average screen and a **** design, so it wasn't an option either.
The buildquality and the keyboard of the 8510p pleased me and also the price :)

    Ordred for 1500$ in total:
    2,2 GHz
    2GB Ram
    120GB HDD
    Vista Buisiness
    3 years global warranty
3 years HP Care Pack Next Business Day Hardware Support

Should hold it in my hands in about 2 weeks

$1500 in Switzerland is a great deal. Is that including VAT?
