I've had mine for a little over a week now. In a completely quiet room, you can hear the fan, but it's super quiet. If you're in a room with noise and what not, you won't be able to hear the fan. No heat issue for me at all. It gets slightly warm on the right palm rest, where I believe the HD is. I have the regular 6-cell battery. It last about 2 hours on the recommended HP power plan. I'm unsure how long it will last on the power saver plan. HTH. :)

I ordered my dv3t during the July 4th specials with a $30 stackable coupon, and it arrived today but won't get to use it until tomorrow when I get back home. Came out to be $752.99 before tax. I was so excited about ordering it that I really didn't do my research and am now kinda worried about my choice with the processor. Is the P-series really that much better than the T-series? I like to be able to access things fast, but will it really make that much of a difference? Here are the specs:

HP Pavilion Entertainment dv3t customizable Notebook PC

    • Espresso Black
    • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    • FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 50% OFF!! 500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
    • 13.3" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    • LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    • Webcam Only
    • Wireless-G Card
    • No Included Mobile Broadband
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I got the P series because it seemed like a lot of people were say they run cooler than the T series. I'm not sure how much they compare as far as speed. You could test it out for a week and see if you're fine with the speeds and the heat. If you don't like it, then they'll it back and you can exchange it for the P series.

Regarding heat, the P series and T series will be virtually the same at idle and doing normal tasks. But at full load, the P series will put off less heat than the T series by 10W. As for performance, a P series will be faster, but your set up is fine and you would probably not notice the performance difference.

Any laptop bought after June 26th gets the upgrade. Look in the papers received with the laptop, it should be in there.

I think they're getting a little slower. It's probably because a lot of people are ordering now because school's about to start up. I ordered on a Monday with my first computer, and it was shipped on Friday.

Finally pulled the trigger (thought I found a 30% off coupon but turned out to be for desktops; was frustrated so just used the $100 stackable one and went ahead):

    HP 90W Smart AC/Auto/Air Combo Adapter $77.99

HP Pavilion Entertainment dv3t customizable Notebook PC

    * • Espresso Black
    * • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

    * • 50% OFF!! 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    * • Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

This is my first Windows machine! Used Mac for fifteen years, just wanted something reasonable and small to carry around with me (keeping a Mac Pro desktop), also to gain familiarity with Windows just because that's what 90% of the world uses (unfortunately lol).

P.S. Also got 6% back through Fatwallet, I can hear that takes a long time so I'm a little nervous about it, I've never used it before.

P.P.S. The final price just for computer (not adapter) was around $888 plus shipping I think.

Why didn't you use NBZ2897 to get the $250 off as it's also stackable?

I just used it to configure the same exact system, albeit with the backlit keyboard & headphones (so it hits $1,200) and it cost $800.98. That's without tax by the way.

I would recommend you go for the 500GB drive over the 250GB 7200RPM. It's going to give you the same, if not better performance, with double the capacity for the same price.

Also, I would recommend opting for the backlit keyboard.... for $25 it's highly recommended. Besides, you're going to want to hit $1,200 anyway so you can use the $250 off coupon.

Think it over and if you paid $888 without tax, then I would definitely recommend canceling the order and re-ordering it with the coupon I gave you as you would be saving about $90 along with getting the backlit keyboard and a pair of headphones :p, so in reality it would be about a $120 savings....

Shipping is free by the way, I don't know if you paid for expedited delivery so that might factor into your costs if you did go for it...

    G'luk.

I'd really like to get a dv3t with the T9900 inside... without going through ebay and ripping my machine apart. HP already has two models available with this CPU - NE898AV and NE899AV, but these are STILL not available for customization, despite being in HP's parts inventory for over two months.

I know HP wants to sell their current C2D processors, but I'm a sucker for "real" performance. The T9900 has been out for over two months, so there's no reason why HP shouldn't offer it for the dv3t.

At the same time, I'm looking to move up to Win 7, so I'll be waiting a few more weeks for an RTM. If HP decides to upgrade the GPU with a 200M series and then offer the T9900, it would make for a very, very impressive 13" notebook.

I always hate waiting for that 30%-off coupon to go live, but it's even harder when you need to wait for that "next amazing thing" as well.

Anyone still waiting on theirs to be shipped? I ordered mine last Monday and it still hasn't been shipped. It's been in production for almost a week now. Any chance I'll get it by this coming Sunday? Has anyone every waited more than 2 weeks for theirs?

@DLDude you should have gotten an estimated build date from HP. Click on "Order Status" on the HP site and login, and it will give you the status of your lappie.

    @ EVERYONE ELSE!

I just ordered mine, and the first thing I did was reformatted the OS partition with Windows 7 RC1 (7100) x64. I'm having some real trouble getting the Geforce 105M driver installed.

Whenever I try the HP driver for Vista 64, I get an OS version error, and whenever I try direct from nvidia for a Windows 7 x64 driver, it only installs an HD Audio driver (for the HDMI port I assume). Could somebody help me out with which driver they are using for Windows 7 x64?

Hey about to buy a dv3t off hp.com but had a few lingering questions...

    1. if i don't purchase any hpcare plans what kind of warranty if any do the customizable dv3ts come with?
    2. these come with a FREE windows 7 upgrade voucher in box right?
    3. the fatwallet discount is now only 3%, is this because the 6% rate was just a promo? if so, anyone have any idea how often these come around?
    4. anyone know how often the 30% coupons for notebooks come around? any predictions about how long it'll be before the next one?
    5. finally, is it possible to use more than one coupon at once. i know the website only allows one but if i purchase over the phone will they allow both the $100 (on purchases over $800) and the $250 (on purchases over $1200)?

thanks in advance...will post specs on my unit once i buy...

Hey, I am looking to get the dv3t and wanted to know if getting the 9-cell battery is a good idea? I dont mind the extra cost for it, but I used a friend's HP laptop(not a dv3t) which had the 12 cell battery and found it really annoying to use on my lap. Please tell me your comfort experience if you have opted for the 9-cell battery. Is it worth going for the high capacity 6 cell battery otherwise?

I looked into a 9 cell but it adds quite a bit of size to the back of the pc. It sticks out the bottom. This can be good because it raises the laptop up off a desk and should provide better ventilation, however i think on your lap it would be uncomfortable.

thx for the replies guys. I was also wondering if it is worth paying $100 more for a P8700 (2.53 ghz) compared to a P7550 (2.26ghz)? Also, should I get the infinity display? I will probably opt for the 9-cell since my 3 year old Dell has no battery life left :(.

I think I'm going to let the order ride--I'm getting the computer I pretty much want, plus Fatwallet went back down to 3.0% from 6.0% for HP. I was planning on getting some Bluetooth headphones with a built-in microphone so I could use Skype on it so I didn't want headphones anyway, and the backlit keyboard didn't seem that exciting to me (although a lot of other people seem to think it's great). I thought about getting the upgraded video card to bump up the price but I asked here if there was any value in that if you're not a 3D gamer and the response seemed to be "not really", more or less.

If a better coupon comes along this week or Fatwallet bumps their special back up I may cancel and reorder with the better videocard if someone comes along insisting that it makes a real difference in video playback, especially since I just saw a picture of the 9-cell battery and it looks a little uncomfortable (not so much for my lap but on a desktop--I don't like keyboards to have a positive tilt because it strains my wrists slightly [supposedly they're supposed to have a neutral or even *negative* tilt for maximum comfort]).

    Thanks for the heads-up though.

I bought a dv3t back in June with a GeForce 105m and have had some problems with the video card overheating while playing games. When playing half life 2, for instance, the game will run for about 15 minutes and the crash. This has happened on several games. Is anyone else having this problem?

While we're at it, can anyone recommend a good protective case that fits the dv3t specs very closely? (I like a bag that custom-made for a certain notebook, or close to it.)

I would look at Built NY sleeves like this one.

Here is the Built NY gallery along with information on them...

I tried about 3-4 sleeves, and found that the Built NY ones were the most protective and stylish of them all. It hugs the laptop very well as they are rather elastic. The rest seemed just to cover the laptop like a drape more than anything rather than actually hugging and protecting it.

I was using a 15in Built NY sleeve on my 14.1in DV2500 and it fit amazingly well, just a tad too long (<1cm), but it hugged it like a glove....

Is this very protective though? I don't want just a neoprene sleeve, I prefer something along the lines of a briefcase/bag. (The Edge I Steel Blue from Brenthaven looks like it might work for me...)

Well I cancelled my order and reordered with one with a faster processor and the upgraded video card. Lost 3% at Fatwallet, but got free upgrade to 4GB RAM and downgraded from the 9 cell to high-cap 6 cell. Total cost after using the $250 coupon (customized total came to 1203) was $953, so about sixty bucks more for a much faster system (plus I didn't want that big ledge underneath the 9 cell battery, plus the increased weight). Hopefully they'll cancel my order without shipping it, they said they can't make any promises.

    (Here's the new setup:

Wow. For $60 more you got the 105M and the P8700... that's pretty sick. Glad to see I've helped.

Still say you should have gone for the 500GB drive, but otherwise that's a great looking configuration. :)

I think you misread his post. He was asking about signing up for the free Windows 7 deal that HP has going on, rather than how to install Windows 7.

Oh. I see now. I had no idea there was a Win7 deal/program so I just assumed he was talking about the RC install....

Regarding the sleeve, yes, it's quite protective. You're obviously going to need to put it in a backpack or some bag and at that point the laptop will be as protected if not more protected than almost anything out there. The sleeve is quite thick and it's kinda spongy so it absorbs a lot of shock... everything just sort of bounces off it. But if you need an actual bag than that's something different as this is just a sleeve.

yea i meant signing up for win. 7.
I noticed that the product number has no #ABA or such thing.. and the product number that's printed on the receipt is different from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.. So I checked the laptop itself.. and it has the same product number that's in the receipt. Is this normal? Why does the sticker on the bottom of the laptop has different P/N.

I think this notebook is too small to cool the moderately powerful parts it has. I have had a dv3t for a while now and it always overheats during game play sessions, even at the suggested settings determined by the games themselves. I am running Win7, 2.53Ghz, 4g ram, geforce 105m. I'm not trying to play any of the latest games, either (HL2, Warcraft 3, etc). It's unfortunate because this is a very promising piece of hardware on paper.

That's the first I've heard of the DV3T running hot. Are you sure the fan is running correctly?

Don't take this the wrong way, but why did you think the dv3t would be a good gaming machine? Don't you think it's too small (screen/build-wise)? I've never come across an ultraportable that could easily handle a gaming load. Why wouldn't you use a more powerful machine with a bigger screen?
I've had my dv3t since early June and I have never had any problems with overheating. However, I do not have the graphics card (just integrated graphics) nor do I use it for gaming (except the occasional Sims3) so perhaps that is why. If you're not planning on gaming with this machine, DON'T waste your time with the graphics card. It's just going to use up battery and create heat.

Yeah--of course now I realize I bumped the price up above 1,199 *before* the $150 rebate (which means the last $150 wasn't necessary)--so I'm wondering if the graphics card was worth it! (don't plan on playing 3d games, just like really smooth video, and someone said that Windows 7 will have some 3rd graphics on the desktop ["Aero"?] [plus hp site says better graphics card takes some of the load off the cpu, although with the highest-end cpu that shouldn't be *too* much an issue I'm imagining [who the hell knows though])

so now thinking about cancelling and reordering again :-(

i hate doing stuff like this, especially since you can tell they're none too happy when you call them (plus they put you on hold for like 3-5 minutes, *twice* [and then still can't guarantee that the order won't ship)

P.S. Well I did it again--cancelled the order to get rid of the upgraded graphics card. I'm about to reorder the same thing otherwise right now. To answer your question--that's right, I drive myself crazy on a regular basis as well.

I just got my DV3T! Woohoo! Except it idles at 51° and 52° according to HWMonitor and the fan is quite loud. My brother's Compaq is silent, you can't tell the fan is on unless you stick your hand near the exhaust. But this thing, wow.... it's louder than my Dad's Lenovo Y530, a Dell Studio 1537 that I just sold, and a pre-unibody Macbook Pro. I think I got a defective one :(.

Definitely worth it. I have a 500GB in my laptop and tons of movies and music on it. Not even half full. It runs fast, cool and quiet even when transferring large files (10GB+).

I'm not a huge big hard drive fan, but if it offers better performance and cooler temps I might add it when I order, since…

The order wouldn't go through when I (re)placed it this afternoon, because I maxed out my credit card limit (previous two orders haven't been canceled yet)…so I spent the afternoon on the phone between HP and my CC company, finally got the clearance for it. So I order again through Fatwallet, and…the $250 coupon no longer works lol.

So back to the waiting game, I wasn't in a rush I just hope I get the $250 (or even better one of those juicy 30% jobs), along with either the free doubling of RAM to 4GB or Fatwallet putting the HP store back to 6.0% rebate. At least I know what I want now, hopefully. :D

lol man... HP must hate you. :p

You know, I may have been wrong about the drives. I had it in my mind it was a 200GB 7200 RPM, which are the older generation drives. But looking at the 7200rpm 250GB drives, they actually seem to outperform the 500GB in some tests. I don't know to be honest. The 500GB should run cooler and quieter though...

Forget about my recommendation either way... :)

Question about protecting the laptop. Earlier there was a post about buying a sleeve from... Built...or something like that? will that be good enough to protect the casing of the laptop or does the material inside the sleeve subtly scratch the laptop also? (as have many of my previous sleeves/cases for other electronics have done) Or should I buy an invisible scratch protector...
