For what I use it for (thumb drives, printing, scanning) it is just fine for me !

"New" = "more expensive". That is just the way it is with computer stuff. With razor thin profit margins on laptops, I don't expect to see USB 3.0 on anything except high end for several years.

As a matter of fact, I'll bet HP's decision to drop FireWire and add eSATA was cost based (i.e. eSATA is cheaper than FireWire depending on which controller chip you are using)

IMO you should wait for the $400 off coupons. I used one when I bought my dv3t (my favorite laptop I've ever owned, for the month I've had it). You may be antsy to get that new laptop in your hands, but imagine what you can do with that extra $150 over the $250 coupons. For me, it was definitely worth waiting. Even though the $250 and $300 coups can be very tempting!

Also, my friend just got a MBP and was boating about the massive benefits of his firewire port, until we tried doing identical downloads: one through my eSATA and one through his firewire of a song we recorded. He hasn't brought up his firewire since. hee hee

Well, sorry about the expired coupon. If a $400 off coupon does come out, that would be really sweet. :D I guess USB 3.0 devices won't be common for a long while, so it will make sense to stick with 2.0 for the moment. Firewire's pretty useful for video cams, but esata is practical for those with external hard drives so the usefulness of both them isn't really lost. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll receive an Nvidia 200m series GPU in the near future. ;)

They are totally two unique ultraportables. Of course, the 14z offers more portability since it lacks an optical drive and is therefore much lighter. And you can always buy an external optical drive, even a blue-ray one.But that means buying outside of the notebook's price. It also sports DDR3 RAM, but the performance wouldn't differ much save for power consumption. One thing I don't like about it is that it has 1 GB of RAM soldered directly into it, and defaults at 3GB with 64-bit Vista. Also it has more ports than the DV3T, such as firewire and display port.

The DV3T on the other hand has a built-in optical drive, and has the much faster G 105 M than the 9400M on the 14z. Though the performance won't differ much, at least the graphics is dedicated on the DV3T so it won't eat up any onboard ram.

Is the screen on the DV3T @ 720p? I'm just guessing it with its resolution of 1280x800.

The resolution listed on HP's website is wrong. It's 1366x768, which is definitely 720p.

The 14z is a nice machine too. Very portable.

From everything I've read, the driver issues with 64 bit have been taken care of. Only older devices that may not be manufactured anymore might have driver issues (because nobody's updating the drivers anymore). The added advantage is that you get to use all 4 gigs of ram should you go that route. And when 4gig ram sticks drop in price you can throw 8gigs in there. Just cause you can. :D

When I get my dv3t in a few months I'm definitely going for 64 bit. When 4gig ram sticks drop, 8 gigs will be going in there.

Well the question is whether or not they will offer one. (I would be satisfied with a $300 or even a $250 one.) While we're at it what's the best way to check for new ones--just go to the Rebate Center at www.hp.com?

I was checking the hp coupons on here, but for some reason that section of the site isn't working for me. If not, then I'd google hp coupons and there are other sites that will list usable coupons. It seems they do the 30% or $400 off very frequently.

I signed up for their newsletter thingy so I receive coupons and offers every week. Not planning to buy though til' X'mas. Hoping for a lot of discounts by that time. :D

Has anyone here received their DV3T? I know it's a bit more like the previous DV3500T but I would like to see some pics, especially with the "Espresso Black" design. :)

I got my refund from HP. They were super easy and really fast with getting the refund. I called Thursday night, shipped the computer back on Friday, and got my money back today, so it took 2 business days to get refunded and 4 days total.

I'm now trying to decide if I should order now with the 30% off coupon or wait for a $400 off coupon. I'm an impatient person. :p

I'm trying to decide between the dv3t and the 14z also. How is the build quality of the hp? I went to BB and saw the dv3510nr, and it seemed a little creaky, especially around the battery area. That's the thing I'm worried about. How is the build quality in your opinion?

Build quality is top-notch imo. Feels really solid, almost too bulky as a result matter of fact.

Screen res is definitely 1366x768 for those still not sure.

The 1280x800 is a typo in the HP site. Definitely the screen is a 1366x768.

Replacing wireless cards should be possible given the replacement card is of the right height factor and supports 3 antennas for the N-draft.

Build quality of the 3510nr is awful..the squeaky chassis and the keyboard just dampens the attractiveness of its specs.

Some thoughts on my dv3t - I got a basic model off of eBay from a guy near me, stuck in a 3.06ghz T9900 and an Intel X25-M 160GB. Now I have a screamer!

Regarding wireless - this notebook has only two antennas. I tried to put in an Intel 5300 WiFi card, and only connect the two antennas. The BIOS refused to boot, saying an incompatible card was in the WLAN slot.

I replaced the 5300 with a 5100, and all is well. I have Windows 7 RC installed now and I'm in the process of installing all my software now.

In case anybody cares, the system runs SATA devices in AHCI mode and there is no BIOS option to change it. This is part of the reason I chose an Intel rather than the OCZ Vertex, because many posts on their forums suggest running in IDE (not AHCI) mode.

hi guys. may i ask your comments on the windows 7 upgrade option? i found in the windows site that dv3t is not part of the upgrade option - meaning there's no discount of some sort. though i found the dv2 and dv4 lined up in there for the discount (i can't find the link anymore)

    can anyone confirm this?

here's where i started reading and can't retrace my pages :D

That's odd. I thought HP is part of the Windows 7 upgrade. HP website says that if you buy a Dv3t, you could get Windows 7 free.

A T9900 3.06 GHZ in the Dv3T...won't that cause heat issues?

Nope. In fact, I put OCZ's thermal paste on it, and it idles 5 degrees cooler than the P8400 (2.4ghz). The P8400 was at 40-41 degrees, the T9900 at 35 degrees. At full tilt, after 10 minutes with both cores at 100% use, the T9900 ends up 5 degrees hotter than the P8400. The P8400 was at 75-76 at full tilt for 10 minutes, the T9900 was at 80 or so.

    N

Edit: The OCZ product I used is called Freeze:

    http://www.ocztechnology.com/produc..._freeze_extreme_thermal_conductivity_compound

Its a bit easier than AS5, as it does not require spreading.

    Hey guys.

So I have been looking through HP laptops for about two months now (I need one for college). I was very interested about the dv3510nr for a while, and actually almost bought it at best buy two weeks ago (thankfully they were out of stock).

After hearing about the new dv3t on the market, I was very thankful I did not purchase the 3510nr. Have been visiting the HP site on a daily basis, waiting for some kind of discounts to come, and my patience has finally been rewarded.

In case you guys didn't already know, HP is having a BIG sale of a LOT of their laptops (of course including the dv3t). You can now get a FREE upgrade to 4GB of RAM from 320GB, and 500GB of memory is now 50% OFF ($25!)

Add the instant savings and the 30% OFF coupon, and you can get a pretty rigged machine for under $1,000! (which is what I intend to do :))

However, HP's website says these offers only last till 7/7, so hurry!

I also had a question, do you guys think it's better to get 320GB of FREE memory, or upgrade to 500GB for only $25 more? Thanks.

Nivekk1400 is right. You should've waited until the 26th for the free upgrade. If you want W7, you'll have to buy it at around 50 bucks I think.

    http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/windows7-upgrade/index.html

Thermal paste just works wonders with CPUs & GPUs. Would you say it's better in thermal conductivity versus AS5? I've just ran out of the stuff and I'm looking to buy a new one.

Why buy it from somewhere? A 7200 320 GB option is in the HP website. Of course it will fit, if it is a 2.5" HDD.

Still can't decide between 500GB of memory or 320GB, and whether or not to shell out $29.00 for the High 6 cell Lithium Battery or just go with the regular 6 cell.

    UGHHHH!

Also, sorry if this is a stupid question, but would 500GB run hotter/noisier than the 320GB?

There's always better deals the next week...
It's one of the unwritten laws of buying a laptop.

It depends on the hard drive for your second question. I have a western digital WD5000BEVT in my laptop and runs very cool and quiet.

I've not personally tested them or anything, but it works well for me - gets good reviews at newegg, too :)

Wow, a lot of new HP laptops on BestBuy.com, including a dv3-2155mx. Too bad a lot of them are pretty weak processor wise :/ (most are 2.0GHz). But there are some neat designs on a few.

    Here's the link to anyone who's interested ;) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17080&type=page&qp=crootcategoryid%23%23-1%23%23-1~~q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0500000%23%230%23%2311a~~cabcat0502000%23%230%23%23o~~nf510||4850&list=y&nrp=15&sc=abComputerSP&sp=%2Bbrand+skuid&usc=abcat0500000

Well, for curiosity I'd buy a AS5 and the OCZ thermal paste to compare. :p

I'd be buying a Dv3t sometime in December. I'm just crossing my fingers it will get the new 200M series from Nvidia. Or any laptop that gets the GPUs first. :D
Would have liked an SSD option, but installing one is not that hard...

Best Buy laptops are watered down versions of the original models. They are even selling an AW with quad core except it has the 260M and not the 280M.

Yeah I agree with the "watered down" remark, but I was actually surprised that a lot of them (including the dv3 model) have 500GB of memory pre-installed.

..Of course everything else is pretty much crap for anyone who wants a fast running machine.

The 500GB is their selling point. :p Other components are there just to say you have a notebook. I think it's better to buy at the HP website where you can customize it..plus the 4th of July sale is something I have to see. Coupons and discounts! :D

Was considering buying a SXPS13 from them but I would have liked a LED screen instead of the standard CCFL. :(

If the CPU were easy to get to, I might agree - problem is the cpu in the dv3t requires disassembling the entire unit. I did not want to chance getting it wrong and having do the whole process again. Thats why I liked the ocz Freeze as its more forgiving in its application process and requires no curing to reach its optimal heat transfer.
