To all those that are having sporadic drops in there WiFi connection, there is nothing wrong with the wireless card, firmware, or antena. I experienced the same problem after buying an HP 14 for my gf. It is very easy to fix. First, go into device manager and bring up you wireless card's configuratiion settings. Disable or switch out of N mode to the other ones (A,B,G). This will fix the problem 100%. Only use N mode when you are positive that the router is using N as well, otherwise you will experience VERY slow wifi speed and random drops.

Have you tried to enable the camera in device manager? What exactly does it say when you try to start up the program?

Okay I noticed a problem after connecting the Envy 14 for the first time to my external display with a 1920x1080 resolution. It's doesn't fill the whole screen. See the pictures:

(the mouse is the end of the desktop screen)

The desktop screen isn't stretch over the entire screen.

I tried it on two Iiyama e2209hds Full HD Screens and a Full HD tv. The problem don't occur with my "older" notebook. I can't set any settings for stretching the screen in my monitor and tv.

Extra information: I have installed version 8.741.1.3 for the HD 5650.

uhh not sure. you tried jjb's tweak stuff (for increasing ssd speed). it sometimes helps out and either gets rid of the whine or makes it less audible. Other times it does nothing for the whine.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-intel-series-4-5-965-chipsets-jjb-tweak.html

other things that may or may not help out were the whole turn on bluetooth or plug stuff into the usb ports or shut off select usb suspend/power saving stuff for the usb ports and pcie slot in the power setting advanced options.

Ok, here are some pics of my radiance screen issues. Its not visisble while doing print screen and the camera somewhat enhance the problem since its zoomed in.

Still its very frustrating, especially while watching video as all them lines blur the screen.

    Radiance screen problem, Pic1
Its only visible on moving objects so here i move the Paint window around a bit while taking the pic. Watch at 100% so you see the diagonal pattern.

    Radiance screen problem, Pic2
Again the camera enhance the problem a bit but you get the point, didnt expect this when i paid extra for radiance. :(

Either the camera has been disabled in device manager, wasn't plugged in, or is defective. You may need to contact HP if you can't get it to start up from device manager. Go into device manager, click imaging devices, right click HP webcam and see if it says enable in the menu, if it does click on enable. There is also another driver under audio devices called HP webcam splitter. Right click the splitter and see if it says enable in the menu, and if it does click it. If this doesn't work, or the camera won't start up, then something is probably wrong, either it's defective or not plugged in.

I seem to get that too. I never noticed it before. haven't really seen it in games either. I see screen tearing in games (happens more often than on the monitor for my old asus g1) but..well...yeah.

Hope you can stop noticing it because ive had a hard time not thinking about it ever since I first saw it. Find it very annoying, not so much in video games because I tend to focus on the game play but while watching a movie its just awful how it blurs the display. :(

My five year old Acer Aspire is much better in that department but thats about it. :)

yeah. I don't notice unless I get my face really up close to the screen so it won't be a problem for me.

if you find display bugs annoying, you'll not wanna hold down fn+f3 while watching a video.

    it turns into a slideshow.

(changing brightness, even if it's max brightness messes up the refresh rate for the radiance if you hold it down)

    Hey Mojo101,

Thanks for the reply. Could you be a little bit more specific? In Device Manager under the "Advanced" tab the only reference I see to "n Mode" seems to be the "802.11n Mode" option, which has options for "Enabled" or "Disabled." The other thing I see relating to mode which seems applicable to your suggestion is the "Wireless Mode." Mine is currently set to "6. 802.11a/b/g." I was a bit confused by your suggestion simply because it is not necessarily an either or situation. I can have "n Mode" on or off and change the "a/b/g" settings in a different section.

If this is in fact the problem, do you have any idea why it would only effect my WiFi connection within the last few days after over a month of working flawlessly?

Also got a bit of problem understanding resolution when hooked up to a Plasma. I used to connect over VGA with 1360x768 but that option is not available with HDMI and the ATI card on the Envy.

I noticed that if i switch to the Intel graphics i can set the resolution on the Envy to 1366x768 but i cant seem to get it working on an external display while on the Intel grapics, no matter what resolution i have. Should it be like that?

Many thanks, seems like a feature then. ;)

If its the filter wearing down as pointed out in that thread its a bit strange it appears on a new computer.

If all screens of that type got it more or less atleast I can sell it on without feeling bad for trying sell a faulty item.

I dunno. I don't see it unless heheh. unless I move the window or move my head (and thus my vision)

and i have to put my head like 4 inches from the screen.

    Hey everyone,

    Quick update.

So far so good. My WiFi has not dropped its connection since I changed the channel on my modem as belltown suggested and thus, it would seem that it was in fact my neighbor's crazy connection that was somehow screwing around with mine (that's the best hypothesis I have at least). Granted it has only been a couple of days, but I am the type that really likes to be able to pin down a problem. Just "fixing it" if I don't have a fairly certain understanding of what caused the problem in the first place doesn't sit quite right.

So it begs the question: Should I try changing the channel on my modem back to what it had been to see if the problem returns in an effort to validate that the current "fix" isn't just some fluke? And, if it would be a reasonable/good/not horrible idea to make this check, how long would you suggest I wait before doing so? I had experienced the WiFi drop every day, multiple times per day after the first time the issue came about, and it hasn't happened since the channel change, but still, some might say, and I could agree, that two days of no drops isn't much of a test.

What do you guys recommend? Not a big deal since things are working now, but I really would appreciate any suggestions.

I purchased an Envy 14 which is to be delivered on the 11th of November. I just found this forum and excuse me for asking, but after extensive reading of all the posts on the forum - I have a quandary:

Should I return the Envy being delivered with the non-Radiance screen and wait for the Radiance screen to come back? Also, I read that a new track pad is coming out - should I wait for this upgrade as well?

This has now got me thinking I have made a mistake if the Radiance screen is returning.

You advise would be greatly appreciated.

That would be up to you. My point of view is if you're waiting for this new thing or that new thing, you'll be waiting forever. Tech is constantly moving and changing daily. It really depends on how valuable the upgrades would be to you.

Is there any reason in particular why this would be a bad idea? I simply want to satisfy or confirm my curiosity, of course, and I'm assuming that if I did change the channel on my modem back to default and the problem returned I could just as easily change it back to its current "fixed" setting and it would be "fixed" again, right? No harm no foul?

I am aware that this all seems very reasonable, and my worry is likely unwarranted, but I would hate to "unfix" what had been "fixed" and be stuck with the problem again.

Any input on how long I should wait in order to make trying this a more valuable test would also be appreciated. Since it began and was a continual problem for multiple days and now has disappeared I'm thinking that any time after a few days of it being "fixed" would be reasonable to assume that it is in fact truly fixed and not just coincidence that I'm not experiencing it.

I know this is all very trivial and I apologize, but still, I'd be glad for some input.

anyone had any problems with the optical drive?

It's very loud and when installing something it gave up a couple of times, I had to take out the DVD, re-insert and then it would run for a couple of mins before having to repeat the procedure.

    Hi All,

I would like to get some suggestion on which of the below envy 14 configurations are good interms of performance

    option 1) i5-560M processor with 6GB DDR3
    option 2) i5-460M processor with 8GB DDR3

Does option 1 generate more heat because of higher processor ?
Does option 1 will have any RAM performance issues as it may not use dual-channel memory because it is 4GB+2GB?

    Let me know your suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

so that's not much of an issue

one guy mentioned it didn't run well at 1600x900 unless it was on low.

ran ok at 1280x768 or something at medium/high though

maybe there's some dx10 or dx11 stuff going on that the 5650 doesn't like

You should get payed by HP for all the nice help you give in this thread.

Noticed that its not possible to make a recovery install if you made the discs on a earlier bios version. Any workaround other than flashing back to F.02 that I did?

you could flash back to f.05 or f.06

it's f.12 and f.13 that it breaks on.

    not sure why.

    HP doesn't acknowledge it.

    kinda just outta luck there

So, I had the dreaded failure many had predicted would not go well, a failure of the radiance display. I called HP and all was good. They indicated that they would not be able to generate the work order without the part. I was optimistic but still kept my expectations suitably low. It looks like I may not have had them low enough.

HP has been holding the the unit since it arrived for repair since October 12 with the ETA of October 18. That came and went quickly. On the 18th, I got a new update of November 8. Then, on November 8, they have now pushed that to November 22. I talked with customer service and from what I can ascertain, the screens should be available by early to middle December. Ugh. It will be a long 60 days without a functioning laptop.
