barring that first try putting the lid down and back up

and/or going into and exiting sleep mode.

and if neither of those work, yeah. safe mode. you can't actually uninstall/reinstall the drivers in safe mode. amd is dumb.

you CAN use system restore in safe mode though. microsoft isn't dumb. go back to a time before this was happening.

I had to do this like five times when I was experimenting with ways to get the regular ati drivers to work with the original HP video drivers (turned out it was just the original HP drivers sucking and killing the screen if you uninstalled/installed new drivers)

Ive got the ati 8.741.1.3000 driver installed but when checking the Intel HD version it reports the same version, is this correct?

It worked fine but i think i found the problem. every time in install Norton internet security, after i reboot it wont turn on. so after reinstalling the drivers i stupidly tried to reinstall Norton and f'ed it up again. ill try uninstalling the drivers again.

EDIT: yup. that fixed it. can you please post the link to the latest ATI driver that doesn't break the brightness controls? I have an i7 so i dont care if they break switchable graphics.

    Hi All,

I found from laptop magazine below review that beats envy 14 edition will generate more heat compared to regular envy 14
HP Envy 14 Beats Edition - A Review of the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition

    1)Envy 14's measurements
    a) Touch pad - 81 degrees
    b) space between the G and H keys - 82 degrees
    c) middle of the underside - 98 degrees

    2) Beats envy 14's measurements
    a) Touch pad - 87 degrees
    b) space between the G and H keys - 91 degrees
    c) middle of the underside - 101 degrees

Can anybody comment on it ?
Does Beats envy 14 run hot compared to regular envy ?

    Thanks

how were you able to find that link? i've been trying to update the ATI drivers with "10-11_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_enu.exe" or "10-11_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe" from the ATI website, but they wouldn't work. where should I go to find the "10-11_ mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe"?

edit: nvm that was dumb. i was selecting the desktop version...

Is there a way or a program that would regulate the increase interval of brightness less than the one tha it comes with? Going from minimum to medium its ok but after that one brightness level is too bright but one brightness level less is too low.

if anyone is interested in a brand new 8-cell battery for the envy 14,I'm selling one on e-bay for pretty cheap (hp's price is currently $~130ish if not purchased with a new laptop). It came with my laptop but I've realized I don't need it. I'm assuming I cannot post the link here, but if you're interested PM me and I'll send you it or you can find it on ebay easily. Just thought this would be helpful as I couldn't find anywhere to buy one of these online separate from the laptop.

if this is considered spam, please just delete this post and sorry.

Make sure power is properly plugged in. If not you may have inadvertently dropped from discrete graphics 5650 to integrated graphics.

the real reason is probably that powerplay bugged out on you.

it does that to me sometimes. go to the catalyst control panel, turn it off, hit apply, turn it back on (or just reboot)

    stuff should work again.

the gpu downclocks when on battery and it can get stuck at those lower clocks sometimes. It may also do this if you just swap the gpu (without unplugging) but I'm not positive. It may also require you to unplug AND swap to trigger the bug ('cause that's all that I do when I unplug, always swap to the intel gpu at the same time)

never really tested what causes the issue.

So im thinking of buying a Momentus XT hybrid hard-drive/SSD on black friday and I'm wondering, what exactly do i need to replace my current HD? I'm pretty sure its a win 7 disk (i can dl an .iso online) and my SWsetup folder. anything else? i don't want to clone because I didn't do a clean install and want to have a clean HDD now.

I got my refund (though for some reason I haven't been billed yet). I asked to confirm the part number that I initially ordered and they said it was the Brightview display even though I know for a fact that it wasn't. I don't know what happened but someone must have changed my part number.

They emailed me a shipping label to send this piece of junk back. I asked them about the radiance display and if they actually had any in stock. Yes, but it's on back order...

I urge everyone not to order the radiance display from the HP parts store unless you want either the wrong part shipped or to be on a never ending back order wait list. I don't know why they put it up on the HP parts store to begin with. Some shady dealings going on for sure.

ok thanks! as for the SWsetup folder and the drivers inside, do i just hit update driver from the device manager and it will automatically find them on my new blank hard drive?

Also, do i do it in this order?
    1.insert HDD/SSD hybrid
    2.insert windows 7 dvd
3.turn on, go into bios and boot from HDD/SSD hybrid
    4.install windows 7
    5. update drivers
    Is that all?

I just run the .exe install files in each folder.

for the bluetooth driver you'll have to install the hp wireless assistant (HPWA in swsetup I think) so you can make the program turn the bluetooth radio on, otherwise the install (any, either the .exe or straight from the .infs) will fail since the bluetooth is off and can't be powered on.

Ok i really need help now. So i did what you guys said, and it worked for a while.

i went into safe mode ----> Device manager -----> uninstall display adapter driver and driver software.
Then, turned it on, let it automatically look online for drivers. ok. says it needs to reboot and BAM. back to square one. blank screen flicks then just sits after windows logo.

if i do the same thing but manually install the 10-8 drivers, it still breaks after reboot.

what am i doing wrong? I really don't want to send it back again.

    uhhh....

why'd you uninstall stuff in safe mode.

if you're doing a clean install the path is this:

    clean install.

    win 7 is done installing.

win update has installed intel hd graphics of some sort (this is good)

your screen is now at a 1600x900 resolution again instead of the vga resolution.

now install HP 10.7 drivers (not what came in swsetup, those are the old 10.3 drivers that cause this whole problem).

if you installed the 10.3 drivers you will probably have to start over 'cause I can't figure out how to get rid of them. big pain.

the 10.7 drivers are the 8.741.1.3000 stuff or something

the 10.3 drivers are the 8.713.#.#### (don't remember those numbers) stuff

edit: the drivers you are looking for are these guys: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50001-50500/sp50027.exe

ummm...then..I have no clue what's happening.

also the order doesn't matter too much.

I'd do the misc1-misc4 drivers first and the amd gpu 8.743.1.000 or whatever that newer one I posted was second.

    or swap that around.

misc1-misc4 (in swsetup) are the intel chipset, intel rapid storage drivers, intel MEI drivers and intel turbo boost for i5 gpu drivers.

then just install everything else with wireless before bluetooth maybe and bluetooth won't work/install that well without first installing hp wireless assistant and making it turn the bluetooth radio on (HPWA is kind of annoying imo so don't let it manage your wireless stuff. Just use it to turn the bluetooth radio on and off if you need to use bluetooth)

I had no problems getting Bluetooth to install without wireless ASSisstant. Maybe it's because I had BIOS f.13 installed when I clean installed.

Ok lemme start over. alll the way back. forget everything i said.

2 days ago, i got my envy back from repairs because it would not turn on. i got it back with a replaced motherboard. it worked fine for a day but now after i shut it down, it will flicker after the windows logo and then just hang at a black screen. This always happens when i turn it on. however, it will not happen in safe mode, which leads me to believe it is a ATI 5650 problem. in safe mode, i will uninstall the driver for the display adapter and then when i boot back into normal mode it will work. once back, windows will automatically find my driver and install it. then it tells me to restart and then it hangs again on boot-up. this happens no matter what driver i install. as long as there is one installed, it will just hang after the windows logo.

Not sure if I should post this here, but I'm thinking about upgrading my i5-450m to the i5-560m or 580m sometime next Spring. Is something I should do myself or should I find a pro? Is there anyone in the NYC area familiar with after market upgrades??

    Thanks!

    Quick question about system backup.

I have an external hard drive which I am currently backing up my HD to. This is because my ENVY has a faulty connection to the hard drive and frequently crashes so I am sending it in for a new one. When I receive my new computer will all my programs, music, photos ect. automatically be transfered to it when I connect the system back up to the new ENVY?

If your HD is large enough, do an image backup with the windows backup utility.

When you get your new system, boot up and go straight to the control panel and do a system image recovery, pointing it to your external disk with the image (it will ask to reboot and do a recovery). Your computer will be exactly as you left it when you backed it up.

Does anybody have issues with the keypad hitting the screen when closed? Appears my keys are rubbing on the screen. I have a Radiance screen, so I want to be as careful with it as possible.

What do you all do to keep the keys from rubbing against it?

Are Envy 14 owners with Radiance screen happy owners? Are there annoying problems with this laptop that can't be fixed? I'm thinking of buying an used Envy 14 locally. I read through the pages and it seems like HP support is really bad which scares me! I'm not a very technical person and I appreciate a company with good technical support. Is this a good machine to buy or should I wait for HP to bring back the radiance screen and buy new?

just got back my HP Envy RMA (Singapore)

    New unit.

    Few changes
    1) Touchpad definitely more solid
Seem to be a layer of better tactile feeling
    2) No more high pitch sound from CPU
    3) Hinge more stiff

Hey guys, I'm new here but I really need to vent. This laptop has been a complete disaster. Since I bought this laptop in Kuwait (it cost me roughly $2300), I've had nothing but problems with it. If any of you are curious, my model no. is 1099-ee. Upon inspecting my laptop, I found an inside smudge on the screen, damaged hinges almost like they've been scraped and a dreadful dead pixel. Of course being an "elite" laptop, I couldn't stand the thought of living with a dead pixel or a smudge or any sort of physical damage. So I contacted my service provider. At first, they agreed on replacing the screen but turns out, they're no longer offering the Infinity Radiance screen. They offered to replace my unit whole but again, no Infinity Radiance screen. I flat out refused because the reason I bought the Envy 14 in the first place was BECAUSE of it's Infinity Radiance screen. After arguing and fighting over the issue of the non-replaceable screen, they finally gave in and decided to refund me.

It's a shame that I couldn't be completely satisfied with this unique laptop. I really really love the screen but in the end, I just couldn't live with a dead pixel on an elite and an expensive laptop. Is there any laptop out there with the capabilities of the Envy 14 and it's amazing screen? Because after getting my money back, I'm planning on spending the money on another unit. Any suggestions for a $2300 price range? Thank you.

    Thats the correct spot.

    Backup:
Control Panel --> Backup and Restore --> Create System Image (in the right side pane)

Select your external HDD as the backup device.

    Restore:
Control Panel --> In the search box, type recovery, and then click Recovery --> Click Advanced recovery methods

Click Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer, and then follow the steps.

    questions:

    1) who has done a fresh install, and do you recommend it?

    2) how easy is it?

    3) what is the benefit of doing a fresh install over just uninstalling bloatware?

    1) Some swear by it -- I don't find the benefit.
    2) Just more tedious than difficult.
    3) Possibly minimizing junk being left in registry?

I find it is more convenient to do use the recovery manager, perform a system recovery and choose the second recovery option (restore image with drivers only, no bloat-ware).

I'm now having a problem with the backup.

I started the backup yesterday and just now I got an error message saying I don't have enough space on my external hard drive for the backup but in reality I have 300 gb of free space, and my C Drive is only 200 gb.

    WTH?

Found this on Technet, which actually makes sense because all of our systems are image restores when we receive them from HP...

Look for the proposed answer in this thread by Davi Nigro in the following link.

Of course, if you are not comfortable, the easier route is to manually save all your non-replaceables (pics/music) to the external HD and just reinstall your apps when you get your replacement machine.

otherwise known as the "thank god I don't have to use dvds anymore" route.

I've never done a full system image or something like that.
