Heh, my bad.
I couldn't get a straight answer from Amazon. I was looking to post something tangible about it on the first page. But everywhere you look, WQ784UA#ABA, is listed with a 1366 x 768 resolution.
Smart move.

Gen 1 Vs Gen 2 SSDs.
Different speeds & capabilities.
2 being (obv) significantly better
*NOTE*: This is more a generally accepted assumption, it isn't forsure -
They also forgot to change the rest of the description of the screen if they indeed meant to change it to the standard display.

for someone trying to get info about the envy 14, this is not a good resource...it's so HUGH and full of off topic garbage. I asked a question 20 pages ago that got lost in the mix.
Anyway, is there any difference in warranty when buying from Costco, Amazon, HP Direct or Ebay????? -
Happens when folks are waiting for their Envy. It's a community and a lounge not merely a customer service/technical info thread. So you'll have to bear with it a bit. Believe me when more folks get them in hand, there will be lots of info that you may not be able to keep up with. I'll post up the pertinent info on page 1.
The warranty is from HP. The difference between all of these is the return policy. Something that can be important. HP has the best. 21 days no questions asked - free shipping both ways. Amazon is more or less the same. Not sure about Costco because the policy can be regional. Ebay usually is the worst in this regard. -
i would say that Costco has the best warranty, as it extends the manufacture warranty of 1 yr to 2 yrs for free, they also have 24/7 tech support and 90 return policy which is very good but at this point i doubt the Envy will be at Costco for a while. HP is going to have the most expensive warranty but probably the easiest to deal with because they are the manufacture, other than Costco because they have a local store. Ebay would just be the standard hp 1yr warranty unless you bought one on hp separately and i believe Amazon would be the same deal.

Hey guys been following this thread for a while but decided to register and post.
So, anyone planning on running linux on their Envy 14? I'm considering trying out Linux Mint. I've mostly only ran linux for fun/random things but I think I might try it as my main OS for a while. What do you guys think?
Also, ordered on the 27th and still says order in production.. guess it's the same for everyone. My config is the i5-520m and 160gb SSD. -
Yes someone has tried Linux on it and here is their report:

Does anyone know if the Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth can operate on the 5 GHz band, or does it only work on 2.4 GHz?
-
How does one get into the ban bowl drawing?
-
Thanks for the response regarding the warranties!
I am struggling with where to make this purchase...
Ebay has cashback that stacks to a total of 13% and no tax, but I must pay with paypal and therefore cannot get a credit card extension on warranty (via amex or visa signature)
Amazon has no discount opportunity, but I can pay with CC and get extended warranty.
HP has 5% cb, but tax kills that - get warranty extension through cc payment
Costco - I get there extended warranty, but I pay tax.
If only I could pay on ebay with a credit card, that would seal the deal.
Suggestions? -
-
Lemme tell ya, it doesn't take much.
*Jots down your name...
-
Costco is the safest best because you get 90 day return window if for any reason there is a better deal within 3 month. You are not saving anything, but at least you get 2 year warranty.
-
I don't think paying via PayPal with a credit card voids the automatic CC extended warranty. Considering the proof they require such as receipt and proof of ownership (serial number plus registration of your computer with HP), there doesn't seem to be any barrier. As long as you have documentation proving you paid using the credit card, the claims adjuster will honor the warranty claim. Just be sure to register your purchase with the CC warranty program long before you need to put in for a warranty claim.
-
I have paypal linked to my checking account, so I would basically be sending cash....Can I add a credit card and make ebay purchases with a CC through ebay?
-
Great thanks. Yeah I saw a few of his posts, it seems that there's no GPU temp in any of those screen shots though? What is the usual GPU temp?
Also does it come with an Intel 6100 wifi card? And how are the beats speakers? -
Yes you can definitely add a CC to your Paypal account. At check out though make sure you select the CC. Look for alternate funding source link. Paypal likes to default to your checking account which saves them ~2% over a credit card.
Also, do verify with the CC extended warranty department that when using Paypal, what documentation is required. -
I have a sleeve for a notebook of mine and I rarely use it. It doesn't offer much protection except against rain. A case is where it's at.
Just sayin' -
Our German friends are the heroes of this thread. I think they would love a few days off from the Q&A trials...
-
I have a messenger bag with its own laptop compartment, but I feel like the padding's not enough, so I just want to shove a sleeve in there to act as extra padding.
-
why is no one getting the i7-720QM? surely the prossesing power of a quad core out weighs the cut in battery life especially with the slice battery? please correct me if im wrong.
-
Ok, that's legitimate. One thing though, if your notebook wakes up while in the neoprene sleeve, it will cook quickly as there is no ventilation and neoprene is very insulating (I use it for cold weather cycling and to keep my bike water bottles cool or hot).

Dude. It's a dell.
I mean I know they've got that Just in time inventory stuff going on and have some kickass industrial engineers (HP needs to poach some of their industrial engineers. Christ HP).
But still.
...ehhh...really I dunno what the XPS 15 even has. -
You've been corrected (i.e. you're wrong)...
My thing is that with the slice, the Envy 14 weighs almost 7 lbs. You can find lots of other laptops that have i7's that weigh 7-8 lbs with a better GPU. Granted few (if any) other laptops in that weight will get 3.5-4 hrs general battery use, but if I'm going to go with 7-8 lbs laptop I'm getting an HD5870 and a second high capacity battery if I need the battery life. Check out the MSI GX640 and GX740. -
I know this could be a bit dangerous as I begin to fear the bowl BUT:
The sleeve also protects the laptop from scratches when thrown into a bag filled with god knows what.
But yeah dont expect it to withstand a hammer. -
How's it wake up
-
No problem with being social, but just wish there was a separate place for just the technical information exchange. Sometimes people don't want to be social
. If there was a wikipost of some sort in this thread that anyone could edit that'd be cool.
-
I might have missed it but I'm not going thru 50+ pages to look for it. The 21 day return policy, does that start when you get the laptop or when you order it?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
21 days starts when the laptop is at your door
-
After delivery, but see here to double check yourself.
-
what kind of battery life do you think ill get though withought the slice and the i7-720?
-
StealthReventon Notebook Evangelist
Anyone know how thick the computer is with the slice added?
-
Pure speculation (but that's all we've got) probably under 2 hours with "genearal use".
The MSI GX640 or better yet XOTICPC.com has a system built on the same platform, the FORCE 1656. You can configure any kind of i7 or i5 CPU you want and with the 9-cell battery maybe get over 1.5 hours general use maybe more with an i7. -
Does Dell even make XPS 15's anymore?

Just ordered:

-
hey guys, is it a no brainer to upgrade from the i3 to the i5? Will the battery life be worse?
-
Win 7 bug with Windows media center updating and homegroup polling. Can randomly wake up. Hopefully they will fix it with SP1.
There was a poster with a fix but I haven't tried it yet. -
Do not fear the random ban bowl. (echo, echo, echo...)
Yes, there is that as far as a sleeve is concerned. Myself? I have a nice leather bag with a padded compartment for my kit.
You know, I once broke up with a girl for scratching my palm rest? <s>True story.</s> -
You didnt need to cross that out, I had figured out where you were going when I got to "girl".
-
Here's a fun fact. If you see something pertinent that you would like added to the front page, PM me. That's how I find out from other posters. I don't include everything because some things are not in keeping with forum rules. Some things I put up on there on my own (if you can believe that). I only read up to about 50% of what's posted here.
So don't be shy. Hit me up. Get fame. I try to always credit those who contributed the info.
A wiki is not possible with this forum software.
Fun fact #2: before I became a mod, I mostly hung out in the HDX Dragon owner's forum. We had a great time, shared a lot of info, tips, personal stories, modifications, speculations, gripes, you name it. Most of us are still friends. Some moved on to other computers. But if we kept the thread strictly "professional" we would have missed out on some awesome finds and experiences. We looked out for one another because we cared about one another.
While I get not everyone wants to be social, I don't think it would be appropriate for anyone to be anti-social given that this is a lounge. One of the reasons why Owner's Lounges (c) were created was to be social. A place where posters can feel comfortable posting about their experiences, insights, knowledge, lives, questions, etc. etc. A few lounges died out a good bit because a few dominate posters tried to make it "professional" or "elitist" and too rigidly on point and thereby less accessible to other posters. -
Thank heaven Padme isn't here...lolz. I swear we would all be banned, even 2.0.
-
LOL. She's my mentor. She is to be loved at all times. All. Times.

I don't think so. Quanta will be ramping up their production schedule at their Chinese sweatshop factory to 24 hour shifts to cover the Envy's production. The production start delay is due to weather-related issues, such that the construction contractors were not able to put up the suicide nets around the Quanta manufacturing facility earlier this week as originally planned.
-
That was a brilliant, classic retort.

Is this a serious post? I cannot catch the sarcasm
