won't do? -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Unfortunately, that's incorrect - the image shows a large 1, and a small 14.8 - in other words, 1 lb 14.8 oz, or 30.8 oz. -
Do you have the CPU noise issue with 840QM?
What is the latency spec for this SAMSUNG?Thinking of getting the other pair once I see a good deal. -
I think the scale actually says 1lb 14oz. So, that's 30.8oz. I wish it were only 14.8 oz, though!

Verbatim DVD+R... i am on disk 2 of 4 and its been like 1h 30minutes
-
Probably better keep the recovery partition. No need to make recovery disk. Just clean install Win 7 on the other partition.
-
No worries. The one I wanted was posted up. It was on a scale.
Wish I knew who took it though so I can credit that poster. In due time I suppose.
OK for real, I'm outta here. Keep 'em in line for me.

Wow, that's great battery life for such a powerful processor and dedicated GPU on all the time.
-
I ordered the envy with 450m. My shipping date is the 19th. But then it has to travel from the US to Aust, probably take about 5 days. So yeh I'll post if it has a whine or not.
-
Mine ships out from HP tomorrow unless theres a delay.
-
Is anybody who ordered after the 29th have a delivery date before the 20th with a 450m,4gb 1 dimm, 320gb HDD and standard shipping.
-
Great performance in Fallout 3, except it keeps crashing every few minutes. I've tried some of the .ini fixes- does anyone have any suggestions based on previous experience?
-
the envy 14 is crashing :O
-
Perhaps I uninstalled something, but does anyone know how to reduce brightness in slower steps? From full brightness down one click seems to lower it a ton (control f2).
-
Never mind: reposted corrected reply below
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
There are multiple reasons why FO3 could be crashing to hell and back.
Number 1: It hates quad core.
it may also hate fake quad core.
you gotta set it to run only using 2 cores (in the .ini)
Number 2: Ffdshow messes it up too
Number 3: ...uh...*shrugs* -
What is the first thing I should do when I get my envy? Do I need to charge it for a few hours? Can I turn it on and charge for few hours? Or do I use the battery up first and then charge or what?
-
For photo editing it sucks for me. The option I have to use for specific brightness control is to click on the battery icon then 'adjust screen brightness' then use the slider at the bottom which allows for precise control, not the huge steps when using the keys.
It's such a hassle that I would gladly 'donate' to someone if they could right a simple app that would allow quick selection of 'saved' brightness levels.... -
nvm. i got it i think
-
There's no whine from me since mine won't ship till 7/22. (pun intended)
-
No, there is a 'sensor' page. On the left column click 'computer' and on the list that appears on the right, click 'sensor' and all the available temps etc show up, at the bottom is 'CPU powers' which shows you real time wattage draw to the CPU. You can also change the update speeds by going to the top left 'file' tab > preferences > in new window on left, expand 'hardware monitoring' > update frequency > then in right list change 'sensor page' to 1 second. This will give you the most accurate reading of the power usage and all your temps. If you want to monitor all that info while your testing and benching your new baby, then there is an on screen display option that allows you to list any of those 'sensor' readings on your desktop or even to show as 'always on top' so you can keep an eye on what's going on. The OSD options are under the 'file' > 'preferences' > 'hardware monitoring' options...
There are also some very good stability tests and CPU benchmarks in the 'Tools' tab at the top. Overall it's a very useful application with all the data you can get from all the other 'info' apps combined and then some.... -
I would also like to know this. Should I run down the battery and then charge it or plug it right in?
-
just turn it on. they dismissed the weird charge for 3 hours or whatever thing a while ago.
-
Haha
I thought this same thing! (and I haven't uninstalled anything)
If anything, i'm at the point where I WANT to start installing tons of garbage so it can run in the background and keep the stupid i5 busy....when it's busy, it's quiet, and I'm happy
(wow, that's pathetic) -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
hey joel.
see if sound recorder stops the noise (just opening it, not using it) -
No i mean, when its fresh out of the box, should I turn it on and bring the battery down to 0% and then plug it in or could I begin charging it right away. I'm just asking what's best for the charge cycle.
-
I'll try this when I get back home. (at work right now)
-
Is anyone else having a problem with the desktop background disappearing when switching graphics processors? Sometimes when I switch from Intel to Ati or Ati to Intel, the background just goes to black and I'm not sure how to get it back.

So, the source of the morse code is from the i5 520 processor? Is that confirmed?
Stirk? do you have the high pitched sound? -
I have a 520m and I don't have any high pitched sounds. Even when I play FO3 (for five minutes at a time)
-
That is the type of info. you get from Sensor. I think what you want instead is the "Power Management" Option under Computer.
-
Your reply gives me much relief.
-
Sorry if I'm asking you to repeat yourself, valismp, but what are the rest of the specs on your system?
-
Actually the noise would be most evident when the processor is idling and entering sleep states. On a fresh boot open a single browser window or text editor. With the fans off, do you hear anything? The sound may sound like its not even coming from your laptop, but you can hear it better if you put your ear to the bottom.
Clarification: a cpu-responsible whine will disappear when the cpu is highly active. -
Oops, I forgot about the 'trial version' blackouts, they show up randomly, I guess to try and get you to buy it (whcih I did, lol). If you close and reopen a page the 'trial version' blocked items usual change around so you can see the info that was blocked, the CPU power reading is normally right below the 'cooling fans' reading.... You can also try the 'tools' tab and select the stability test, the graphs will show data even without actually 'running' the test, it opens by default to the temp graphs and after a few seconds there should be a 'powers' tab above the graph, that will also show the CPU Wattage (if it works on the trial version)...
-
I haven't had a problem with the background disappearing, but I have had explorer.exe crash twice after switching graphics
I really hope I have an isolated incident - for all of your sakes. It's not something you really have to 'strain' your ears to hear. The room just needs to be semi quiet and you'll hear it loud and clear whenever your machine is idling. I'm hyper sensitive to sounds, but before my wife left me (School related in India
) she said she could hear it when she was sitting 15 feet away. (when I complain about obnoxious sounds, she usually thinks i'm crazy...)
-
Nope, what I am trying to see is the actual Wattage draw on the new i7's while at idle. The power management option is for battery info, the 'sensor' page shows the Wattage as the last item...

I believe I output the power management already - i can do so again if you want -
I took my Envy 14 with me out to work today to get some first impressions (450M, 4GB, 160GB SSD)
-Beats audio is great. The speakers themselves are just average, but with my Shure e2c's the audio was much better than any laptop I've ever used.
-The touchpad is really annoying for me to get used to. On my Vaio I always rested a finger on left click so I need to untrain myself from that. As well, the two finger scrolling doesn't feel as natural as a Macbook but I'm sure with practice it'll be better. I really love the customization of it.
-No CPU whine for me. Very quiet overall but I haven't run any games on it yet.
-When it first starts up the fans blast on full for some reason and I actually find this rather annoying. Any tips on how to turn that off?
-Build quality is superb except for one spot. The underside of the top right corner (under where backspace is) has this odd plastic clicking noise when I touch it.
-The screen is gorgeous. It's funny because when I first turned it on I wasn't very impressed for some reason, then I looked back at my old Vaio and it made it look like a computer from the 90's. No problems with it being brighter in one area or anything.
-Keyboard is great. Good tactile feel, and backlighting is wonderful.
-I feel like the weight is perfect for its size and it feels solid. I think I'll be adding the slice battery soon since I won't mind the weight.
More to come -
Edit: I posted in the wrong thread, lol.
