Every manufacturer has some DOA's, even Apple.

Same here. I feel really bad though for the people having problems. I so wanted these to be stellar examples of technical engineering for all of us... especially given what we went through to get them.

UPDATE:
CPU whine fix candidates have been added to the 1st post.

Still looking for a way to enable two-finger tap for right-clicking. Thanks for the link though.
-
No problemo.
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
You happened to get the one DOA that's been reported so far. It sucks, but it should hardly cause you to give up on HP entirely. If you are so dissatisfied and wish you had bought an MBP, why not just return the E14 and get the MBP instead? You've still got plenty of time to do so, you know. -
Sorry I'm not usually the type to troll but..
Are you seriously THAT lazy that you need a workaround so you can lift 1 finger instead of 2? Why do i always get the impression that Apple people are spoiled rotten? -

two finger tap hates my guts though (on account of it going off when I type since well..the edges of the trackpad register my thumbs when they're lying there -

See Change action center settings up there.
mess with those
Turn Off Security Messages and Other System Notifications in Windows 7
or follow this.
and if it still doesn't go away. ...have you rebooted at all? Have you clicked on the open it thing and does it disappear or not? -
Mine is still whining after even doing that fix....
-
has anyone else tried calibrating the display yet?
it's a real battle to get this thing looking acceptable by eyeballing it -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
well the fixes may not work and you may be outta luck.
I mean only other possible solutions kill battery life (make the cpu never go down to that low power state) or uh....find the damn thing that's resonating on your motherboard and stop it somehow manually (this could result in you breaking your computer by accident and is not advised at all and mainly was a joke option) -
RMA it

Done, done, and done. I will try rebooting again though. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
well ChemE
you got two more options.
Kill explorer. Unkill explorer.
Explorer.exe - Kill all processes at once - Windows 7 Forums
or clean out all the stuff in the thing.
Problem Reports and Solutions - Clear History - Windows 7 Forums -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
You are really keeping the HP forums clean. Nice work
I would +rep you if I could but I apparently need to spread some reputation around first.
-
Thanks! The second reboot did the trick. The first reboot was after installing some stuff, so I guess that closing it got put to the backburner or something...now I can see all of the big, beautiful screen!
My only complaint so far is the keyboard...the keys are REALLY smooth. It'll probably just take some getting used to, but first impression of that wasn't positive. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I keep missing right shift.
and messing up the arrow keys.
....dis can cause issues in starcraft -
Wow, the adapter for my wireless mouse was culprit...haha. I unplugged it and its now fixed. Now I have don't any whine from my cpu anymore.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
wow.
adapter must have been angering the cpu. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
oh but hey danny.
try changing the usb power settings and using the adapter again.
click on the battery/plugged in icon --> more power options --> change plan settings ---> change advanced power settings ---> find the usb stuff --> USB Selective suspend settings ---> disabled -
Question: I just wiped my envy and did a fresh install of windows 7. I've installed all the drivers except for this "PCI Simple Communications Controller" and I couldn't figure out what it is. I've installed all the drivers from the envy 14 driver's thread and the only one I couldn't get to work is the bluetooth. I'm guessing that it is the bluetooth driver? If so, how do I install it.. when I tried, it just says no bluetooth device detected.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that may be the intel rapid storage technology stuff.
-
Doing that made my cpu whine come back. lol. But enabling it puts it back to normal.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I see.
I blame your usb ports being stupid then. -
holy crap i hate this display!!1!1!
-
Thanks for noticing.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it's probably messing with you on purpose.
I just left it alone and didn't mess with color things. -
the whites are teh suck
its either too pink or too blue/washed out
changing colors is futile, its a flippin house of mirrors
it doesnt help either that i get to use a good monitor at work all day but come home to this madness -
Hmm.. no dice. thanks though. Anything else you guys might think it is?
-
i know you did a clean install, but were there problems with the screen beforehand?
-
I'm not an Apple person per say, as I ran Windows 7 on my Macbook, however I fell in love with their touchpad, so I am spoiled.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
well. I've noticed that if you aren't dead on the screen starts turning pink (left, right, above) or blue (below)
so. yeah. -
every radiance display is like this. especially display units ive seen, where it was obvious due to the other laptops beside it being much more neutral
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
still can't believe I've already downloaded almost 8GB worth of stuff onto this guy *copying stuff to an external for the clean install*
-
so I just did a clean install and got my wifi working again
But I have a couple questions:
1) I forgot to delete the recovery partition during the install, how would I do it now?
2) which ati driver do I install, the one from the driver thread or the one from ati's site
3)I backed up my swsettings, what do I have to move back for the brightness controls/mute buttons to work?
Thanks in advance! -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
those buttons should work anyway.
if they aren't by default install HPQL and reboot.
if you want the OSD stuff to show up for the volume, install the hp media smart smart menu (pulls you out of whatever you're full screened into, game wise) or install some third party one. 3rvx version 2.5 was what people were bringing up.
it's customizable and doesn't pull you out of a game -
what is the reolution on the webcam meant to be?
mines at 640 by 480, does it go higher? if so, how much higher??? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it should reach 720p.
HP's default software is locked at 640x480.
you'll need to use some other webcam software -
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, i just got the notebook, i plugged it in, turned it on, and its says windows failed to open on the dos black screen, due to hardware or software changes. HP is about to single handedly make me go and buy an apple
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
....
uh oh.
uh...
try spamming esc on boot. then pick the recovery manager. and run it. -
i did recoverymanager, didnt work
-
ah yeah, those worked after a reboot
any response to the partition/ ati driver? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
use the one in swsetup/in the envy 14 (intel) page on this forum.
any other driver won't work as of now.
for partitions..umm...
partition magic and delete it and respace out your main one (this will take a while) -
they imaged the wrong installation of windows to your machine, not a big deal you probably wanted to do a clean install anyhow. its an anti-piracy measure, windows checks for hw/sw changes
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it may be a deal since he won't have the swsetup folder and won't be able to get a hold of it.
I mean someone else could upload theirs or he could boot up with hiren's boot cd or something and use the tiny xp on there and move it to an external...but besides that -
can't he copy it in dos? wheres it located?
-
I havn't gotten my envy yet, but I love how everyone is dedicated to helping 1 guy out. seems like ill be going here before hp, when I get my envy
-
I'll be glad to make my SWSetup folder available for download once I get my Envy. Anyone know of a good free public upload/download site for large files? If this is not against HP's "terms" (for lack of better legalese).
