Question:
How much of a difference would there be between doing a clean install and just uninstalling all of the drivers that I won't use? I feel that if I do a clean install, I'll just be downloading similar drivers later...so while it might be a lot better in the beginning, once I have everything I'll want, it won't be much different...

That's because that "1 guy" has promised a round of beer for everyone that helps!
-
back to using my old amp for headphones...makes the audio so much better
god bless garage sales -
this is what is says, Windows failed to start. This may be due to a recent hardware or software change. It is asking me to put into another windows installation disk and reinstall, but i dont have one. Why doesnt hp make it work the first time. I think im the only one who cant even get to the login screen. Let alone have a working windows OS
-
From the Dell and Toshiba laptops I've used in the past, it made a WORLD of difference doing a clean install and picking drivers and apps I wanted individually than doing an uninstall. This will be my first HP
but I'm assuming the experience will be the same.
-
Some of it might be because it's third party software that's licensed to the end user.
Only thing that is freely available to the public is drivers and HP media(whatchamacallit). -
Cool, thanks! +1
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
So do u guys actually hate this display? I thought the screen was the best thing on it. Is it really that bad with the viewing angles?
-
I will do it then.
On my real laptop, that is...not the one I'm sending back.
-
Gotcha, but wouldn't it be useless anyhow unless you have an HP? Maybe Not?
Ah well, maybe on the down low...
...these aren't the droids you're looking for... -
I'd probably need that sw setup too since I accidently wiped without backing it up and now I'm missing a driver. My unknown device says "PCI bus 0, device 22, function 0", could someone find out what is at that location for theirs?
-
I like it. It's not as stunning as I had imagined, but I do like it. Only thing I'm not 100% about is the brightness levels...there's a big jump toward full brightness that excludes the setting I'd like.
-
anyone get this?
this is what is says when i turn on my laptop. Windows failed to start. This may be due to a recent hardware or software change. It is asking me to put into another windows installation disk and reinstall, but i dont have one. Why doesnt hp make it work the first time. I think im the only one who cant even get to the login screen. Let alone have a working windows OS. Anyone advice, I can press esc and get to the menu for 1)system info up to system recovery. -
viewing angles suck; brightness, contrast, and color gamut rocks
that's my take so far -
You know... I'd report you just for the fun of it. Get you all tangled up in lawsuits and what not...
*rubs hands together while coaxing an evil grin. A bit of head swagger too.

I suggest you download and burn a windows 7 ISO
may seem like a pain but at least you may be able to fix this issue tonight vs. having to RMA it -
here dude, i made a thread so ppl can help u without it cluttering the lounge
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/501369-thread-blah.html#post6490125 -
Ok so I've been using mine for a while now...at first I didn't think I had a cpu whine but I definitely do. It's the high frequency one, and it's really starting to drive me nuts as a matter of fact. I tried the bluetooth and mic fixes but those didn't work, big surprise. Idk what to do about this
Also, my HP logo on the top has the backlight messed up like some other person I saw, like the circle is offset, not a big deal really but it is noticable.
I've burned one recovery disc so far, and the sound that my drive made was like 10 times worse than the cpu whine lol, an awful high pitched beeping sound coming from the burner. Anybody else experience that? -
I guess I'm lucky...520m with no whine. I'm in a silent room, and I have pretty good hearing. All I hear is the fans.
-
-
i suggest a clean install. download a copy of win 7 from here http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
just follow the steps. Just find where the product key sticker thing is and you're good to go
and go here for drivers

Ever since the thread started to move at...
... ludicrous speed. -
Sheesh, a lot of these quality issues are disturbing. Did they roll in a cage of untrained monkeys or what? I'm all for cutting costs, but these misbuilds are far from minor issues. Even wrong OS?
That twitch is starting ... to come ... back... -
I was just on intels WiDi site and saw the following requirement "ONE of the following: Intel® Core™ i7-620M processor, Intel Core i5-540M processor, Intel Core i5-520M processor, Intel Core i5-430M processor, Intel® Core™ i3-350M processor, Intel Core i3-330M processor"
Does that mean that the envy can do this as long as you didn't opt for the 450m? I googled stuff and didn't get any good answers. -
Hi guys,
I just received mine after ordering on the 4th.
Only things that stands out to me are...
1. It is not as quiet as I expected (but I can live with it)
2. The keyboard flexes a lot more than I expected.
Apart from that it seems to be a great looking laptop as well as the performance. -
you're right, it does flex
i wouldnt ever notice that unless someone told me to try it out -
LOL, you got that right, now it's only at ... ridiculous speed!
-
you guys are nuts, this thread has been going plaid for weeks now
-
I'm not entirely sure, but I recall a while back someone told me no. No two-finger tap for right-click or three-finger swipe for flipping backward/forward webpages, and no 4-finger vertical swipes for pushing all Windows out of the way or activating Expose. But I must say that 4-finger Aero Peek WOULD be nice.
EDIT: Screw it. Two-finger tap for right-click never worked to well on my Mac. Even after a month of experimenting, my mac only got it down maybe 2/3 times. Magus says 3-finger right click works. -
Why can't I even get 2 finger scroll to work? I thought taht was like the only thing supported lol
Edit: Nevermind, I had my fingers together so I guess it thought it was just 1 big fat finger lol -
I assume the optical drive is quite a bit bigger than a 2.5" hard drive. Is there a type of mounting bracket that could be used to facilitate the installation of 2.5" drive? Or is a matter of building your own?
-
Nevermind, I figured it out. It's the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.. someone should add it to the envy 14 drivers page.
-
LOL. Too funny. Youngins prolly don't remember that movie.
Anyway, if I get banned for derailing, I'm taking you down with me.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I like it.
It only really gets pink on me if you're walking away/towards it from across the room. -
***********
Can everyone check if their keyboard flexes down as much as my unit does?
***********
I might be anal but it's bothering me quite a bit. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
define flex.
do you mean flex when you push down beyond regular typing strength? Yes it flexes.
if you mean flex by like regularly typing at full speed the good 'ole fashioned fingers on the homerow way?
no. or not in a way that I can perceive. -
my schwatz is bigger than yours
-
Any word on whether we'll ever have more brightness settings. I'd like it a tad brighter then the second highest level, as the highest level is absurdly bright.
-
Same here, now i'm starting to worry about little things like the optical drive...
-
This is one reason why I choose envy, easy access to the components. Its a not bad thing, you can upgrade easily.
Did you use 30% BCB?or just 10% discount+credit. -
I'm also getting worried for the condition of my laptop. I'm guessing HP is working the people in the sweatshops on 18 hours shifts where most defective laptops begin happening towards the end of their shifts. I just hope I don't find a dazed worker's finger sticking out of my optical drive.
-
HP is basically pushing me to buy an apple. I dont care anymore about 500 bucks more, at least their OS works. I just received mine, turned it on and it says windows has failed to run.
-
How do I open the latch for the battery? I move the hinge over, but when it goes about halfway, i cant move it anymore. Is there something special I gotta do or am I just retarded lol?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
That is caused by someone at the factory screwing up royally.
you can fix it yourself if you wanna try/let people walk you through it. -
Yay got my envy today love it soo far case is awesome. Sound isn't that great interface is cool looking. Kinda wish I ordered the slice battery now
Gonna install the ssd soon and reformat how can I keep this envy interface I like it.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
....move it all the way over.
It's designed to go until the battery symbol isn't seen anymore -

do this stuff. And then mess with it a bit more. It makes the speakers sound better -
A week ago I ordered the E14 with a 640gb 7200RPM hard drive, which is no longer available. I looked at my order status today and noticed that my 640gb hard drive is listed at 5400RPM. Has anyone else ordered the 640gb drive or does anyone remember whether it was listed at 5400 or 7200RPM? I'm disappointed that I might have overlooked this.
If it's indeed 5400RPM, I plan to call HP and change the order to the 500gb 7200RPM drive. Do you think this will significantly affect shipping date, currently July 22? Will this change affect the Bing cashback discount even if I tell them not to bother with crediting me the price difference between the two drives? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it was always 5400 rpm but 5400 rpm on a bigger platter is roughly the same speed as 7200 rpm on the 500 gig
also. you can't change the order around at all after the first day.
unless you want to scrap the system and start over from the beginning
