I really don't think the screen is THAT bright on 100%.

Btw now I don't hear the CPU whine anymore...Weird, not doing anything on it either

Anybody else's hp logo messed up like mine?

    roughly speaking.

I mean if you compare the 500 and the 640 the denser platter at 5400 rpm is about as fast as a smaller sized 7200 rpm.

I mean the 500 gig may be faster but it won't be 140 GB worth of space faster

Did you have stuff in the usb spots when the whine was going on?

someone else's whine stopped after they took out their wireless mouse dongle.

also one other person had an issue with their HP logo. can't remember who it was.

I have been following this thread but stopped when I got my laptop. Few questions.

I installed just the hp media drivers to try and get the osd but didn't work. Any ideas beyond reinstall?

I am not sure if the mobile data protect worked, it went to a command line and exited

Also, anyone get the wireless button to work after a clean install?

wireless button I think (think) requires the stuff in the HPQL folder in swsetup (HP quick launch)

the OSD for volume is hp media smart smart menu (MSMenu in sw setup)

but that pulls you out of a full screen game when changed. If you dun like that there are third party versions.

This: 3rvx25 and envy skin.zip is 3rvx 2.5 (a 3rd party OSD that won't pull focus away from a game. at least that's what someone said) and an envy skin someone made on the envy 15 forum

lemme take a look at mine closely.

    yeah there's no auto lock.

just use your fingernail or something to help push it all the way. have the computer upside down or just not in a way that's fighting gravity.

don't be afraid of breaking it...well unless they messed up putting it on. In which case well...I think you'd notice somethign sticking out. But I didn't really have any trouble

Could be the latch isn't retracting all the way. So many issues... Maybe I will be better off keeping my Sager and using a netbook... sigh.

Maybe see if you can find where the latch is and poke a pen or paperclip or whatever to push it down further. I don't know exactly how it's designed, but seems you should be able to see the latch location somehow?

Not sure if I had usb stuff plugged in when it was whining, but I don't hear the whine anymore...I'll let you know if it comes back and when

On another note, my CPU usage keeps jumping between 0 and 25 and I have nothing running...what's that about?

    something doing things.

go check out what it is. task manager, processes, show processes from all users check box, click the cpu thing up near the top to sort by cpu use.

system idle process is what's not being used.

i'm primarily concerned with speed relating to the use of video and especially photo editing. would the 5400rpm drive show slower performance when, for example, editing large files in photoshop?

My preferred playback program has actually been WMP for the last few years. iTunes sucks and I've historically had problems with winamp being unreliable and hogging resources. I feel like MS has done a pretty good job with WMP in the last few years, good enough that I haven't even thought about looking for anything else for audio or video playback unless I'm watching a video encoded with a codec that WMP doesn't like.

It might impact loading and saving the files, but it shouldn't impact the actual editing performance, since everything should be running from RAM when you're editing.

    it's flush.

and the latch barely pops out and is hiding beneath the OTHER half of the cover.

    so...

...uhh...not sure how you take it apart if the first latch won't come off

the second latch needs the first latch off to unscrew it.

    WWAN upgrade possible?

    Hi,
Im about to order an Envy 14. However i already have a HP WWAN card that id like to use.

Can someone please check the following on your received model without the wwan option:

    1. Is there a Sim Card slot under the battery that actually works? Does it have the spring load mechanism?
    2. Is there an empty Mini PCI slot under the HDD with two unattached antenna cables?

    Thanks

Mediamonkey. Nothing compares to how easily you can manage your collection and tag everything properly (you tag via amazon). Best player bar none.

Or you can go the audiophile way and foobar with ASIO and all that other lovely junk that usually no one cares for.

But trust me after you go mediamonkey everything will seem clunky. Especially itunes and WMP. I only use Zune media player cause I traded my Cowon S9 and got a Zune HD as part of the trade.

Yes there is a a mini PCI slot and a sim card area next to it under the HD. There are no antennas.

Bugger, that means i have to get the full WWAN option when ordering.
Same thing on the TM2, Mini PCI card slot is there as well as a working sim slot, but no wwan antenna cables in the mini PCI slot.

Wonder why they do this, it would cost 5 cents to put in the antenna cables to allow for later upgrades.

    Thanks for checking.

    *sighs*

    that sucks.

well you have a few options.

A: Ignore it and never take it apart and be fine with that (a bad option)

B: RMA it or return it and get a new one. (Free, 21 days to return/exchange/whatever or however much the rma repair will cost or whatever)

C: ...uh buy the 60 dollar back panels. wait for 'em to arrive and use the computer like normal til they arrive.

when they arrive. Find a way to pry the battery panel off without damaging the metal parts, but it's ok if you damage the other panel like where it hooks into the battery one sorta. They send both panels (battery panel and the other one).

not sure if they send you screws too. probably not. So try not to damage those guys.

Im pretty sure there was something wrong with it. The only reason I wanted to remove it was because the battery cover was a little loose at the bottom and there was a gap.
I watched the youtube video on the envy 14, and the guy opened the latch no problem. I could not open it with all my force until it actually broke... I still cant even open it.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options (the slider's at the bottom of the screen)

Or you can click on the battery icon in the system tray and choose adjust screen brightness. It doesn't actually say the percentage, but it's pretty easy to judge for yourself.
