Thanks. On a different note, it's odd having to hit fn + F1-F12 as opposed to have the function keys assume their primary function by default.

I think it could also be the hp envy theme, but Stardock does have a big impact on this. Thanks!! Has anybody kept Stardock or does anybdy have a better idea on where to get good themes.

Well, since I'm gonna be sending this envy back, just once question.

Will the Recovery discs that I made on this computer, work with my new envy or will I have to make them again?

ok so I took your advice and tried the recovery disks after HP wanted me to pay more for the 2nd PC than the first one i purchased. I used the recovery disk from the first post and now it has this HP window up on my windows 7 background installing all the software. Its like nothing was activated on my PC

btw this is the dude with the windows OS failure from first turning on of my PC

Broadcom is the other. But that's for international versions. What does it say you have in device manager under network adapters?

    on another note...

i thought the viewing angles were supposed to be stellar on this radiance display....it's disappointing to hear it's not =[.

also, when u have an ssd, how much of a difference will you see in performance when comparing a clean install to a regular removal of bloatware?

So its all boxed up and I'm back on my G51. After one day with the Envy screen, I could hardly stand this one lol.

Time to play the waiting game again... August 9th cant come soon enough. Atleast they saved me 14 dollars for only charging me tax on 835 instead of 1035  They were so enthusiastic about that being good news.

Bizarre. Don't know what to tell you from this point. Something is completely borked.

And you tried using the recovery DVDs? I don't know if you got a chance to create them. But you can call HP and have them send you a free copy of them. They will try to charge you but give 'em a sob story and they should send you a free set.

    uh.

it's weird. the device disappears from my device manager if there's nothing plugged in.

are you trying to install it with a cable plugged into your ethernet jack or not?

What's the best anti-virus? AVG Avira Avast? I have AVG on my desktop but I've heard good things about the others. What are you guys gonna use?

And yea, kinda bummed about the logo but it seems like kind of a petty complaint to make.
The CPU whine seems to come and go, I don't see any pattern to it. Strange.
I'm going through right now uninstalling all sorts of sh1t because I see many many people having problems with a clean install, I don't really wanna f anything up

Good luck finding statistics. From personal experience, I say fresh install always best answer. It doesn't necessarily have to do with your hard drive or SSD as much as it does with combination of hard drive (SSD), system RAM (size and speed), and CPU resources consumed. It's just a bunch of stuff that's eating all your precious resources regardless of your hardware. I've been buying, building, configuring, PC's for 20+ years (yeah, ok, I'm ancient), and from my experience OEM crap will slow stuff down in general.

I use Avast Anti-Virus free edition. AVG used to be good, now it's kinda bloated and started giving me more false positives than I cared for. Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty good too, as long as they fixed the issues with Mspeng.exe hogging all resources periodically.

it should says "Other network controller" or something, you won't know if its broadcom, but like you say it should be broadcom.

I got one (from Singapore) and I installed the broadcom driver meant for Envy 15 and it works for me.

I don't think they fixed that issue wingnut.

but I think it did that hogging when it updated and well, the hogging was caused by a system restore being made (not really sure how to turn that off, but there is a way)

I was considering trying out ESET Smart Security 4. I saw an add for it in the July 2010 issue of WIRED and they have a free 30 day trial like most of them do so I'll probably give that a shot. If anyone has used it before I would be interested in what your thought were. PM me if you want to tell me your opinions.

I use Avast on my desktops and MSE on my laptop. Whenever system resources go nuts, I have to reboot. It's only once in a great while. I did read it's something with it checking its own directory and if you exclude it, it's shouldn't happen. After I did a fresh install of Win 7 last time I didn't bother to check what I did before that fixed it. LOL. That's the one thing I hate about a fresh install, there's little tweaks you do that you never document or remember for the next time around.

Is it considered as a RMA? Meaning they will fix it and send back to you, or send a new replacement? How that would effect your BCB.

Are you sure you did the right thing?Vista is long time gone my friend. Why dont you download the win7 ISO and use the key on the bottom of your E14, dont tell me it was win vista key that you see lol.

That logo is defective, I would RMA that one definitely. The logo was lighted up by the same LED light for the screen, either they didnt put it right, or something...better safe then sorry. Its 21 days to think.

you gotta go into the bios and turn off action keys.

you have to do fn + f4 to make f4 happen otherwise

edit: you get into the bios by mashing on f10 as the computer boots
