alright I OC'd to 500/825 and everything went smooth. Scored a 7266 on 3dmark06, which is 200 higher then before.

Eventually I got up to 550/825 and the computer restarted... the temps seemed to be fine though, the gpu and cpu were both in the 70's.... any idea why it crashed?

How do you know that you have the updated BIOS? Last I check they look like the same versions.

first of all i got my computer on monday, but i've had to work 8 on, 8 off for these last few days up until thursday so i wont get to fool around with it much... I should be sleeping now.. I'm really unfamiliar with windows 7 so i need to fool around for a while before i will feel comfortable doing even the simplist things...

one thing i'm wondering tho. I started downloading Chrome about 20 mintues ago and it is still downloading, i tried to watch a youtube video and it was buffering every 2 seconds... why is my internet going so slow on this thing? my old dell inspiron that i've been using for 5 years loads videos and downloads things faster, so i dont really think its my internet. Is there something i need to do or is my wireless internet at my house just going really slow today?

also i've had the same wireless kicking me on and off problem as others, but i did what 2.0 said to do in one of his previous posts and that seemed to fix it for me as far as staying connected...

Would like to say that my ENVY has no flaws whatsoever in the way it looks, no noises others are reporting or anything of that nature... Everything looks great so far!... Now i just need to explore this thing a little. Having been on Windows XP for the last 5 years i honestly feel like my dad trying to figure out how to use this thing... i hdont know where stuff is, i'm terribly slow just looking around.

yea, the memory doesnt like being overclocked lol.

at 525/800, I got a 7370 3dmark06 score. How does that compare to other computers with 5650's?

and my max temps were.. CPU- 75/74, GPU- 65

Some envy have a prototype ? bios dating from april. That's why he's updating with the release bios, it's written somewhere on the first page of the thread.

Also for GPU overclock the memory is already quite high, as its double bus it runs at 800x2 = 1600 mhz which is rather high for DDR3 no wonder it goes unstable.
The gpu core side certainly has a bigger potential.

Max mem and core speeds will vary from machine to machine significantly. The 5830 (E 15) base clock are 500/800 and some can't get beyond 525 / 825 others are stable up to 900/1200, it will vary with the grade of the GPU and mem chips and the manufacturing variance by HP, which as you know is major....

Furmark is a very good tool for setting your max stable speeds, just run default burn in image and keep upping clocks until you start seeing large purple 'veins' in the fur , then back down a bit (around -5%).

What version as MSI afterburner is working for you ?

I just got this laptop yesterday and have not played with it enough to really do any type of review for now, but I must say that I am really disappointed in the radiance display. This thing is a freaken mirror! It is a real deal breaker for me which is sad, because I did get the bing cashback deal. Is there any way to remedy this without voiding the warranty or downgrading the screen? Is there some sort of coating or overlay I could use that would get this closer to a mat screen? This sucks, but at this point I don't know what other laptop comes close. Maybe a 8440p or w? How do their displays compare?

The 5650 has been clocked to 670/1040 stable. The crashing memories are anything above stock. It could have to do with afterburner.

It would be really helpful to have a list of all of the drivers and BIOS updates owners should get as soon as they get their Envy 14. I'll start the list here ... Would everyone mind contributing?
And then 2.0, would you consider adding this list to the first post? (made big so you'll notice this)

    THINGS TO UPDATE:
    - BIOS settings (get from HP)
    - Windows 7 (get from Microsoft)
    - Touchpad drivers (get from Synaptic ?? )
    ... what else?!

Mine takes about 2 seconds to come back from sleep mode, I do hear a sound by the left but it isn't really loud though :err: it only seems to take a while if its set to do nothing when the lid closes and goes to sleep while the lid is closed...

Yeah, I am one of THOSE people and there seems to be alot of us, if you check any forum putting up a matte screen against a glossy.

There must be a film or a process I can employ to counteract the extreme reflectivity of this screen. I have a sony viao Z and it has an anti-reflective screen that is just as nice as this screen but I don't have to starer through my reflection when using it. The reflection is really distracting.

The Envy is better in many other respects, especially size (the vaio Z is too small to use a 1600 X 900 display).

    THis really bums me out.

Here are the steps that have worked for 3820TG owners who have a CPU that can be OC'd by SetFSB. Mine can not. Acer puts different clock gens into its Mobos, seemingly randomly. Anyway, here they are:

    1: Start SetFSB as administrator
2: choose diagnosis and pick ics9lprs365bglf as clock generator, click get FSB.
3: change values as shown, DO NOT click apply before you have changed all 3 values, after all 3 values are changed you click apply.
4: Success! If not: you have another clock generator and this method doesn't work.

If someone has the shareware version and an I4-450M, the Asus G73 clockgen code worked as well.

I have no idea if any of this stuff works on the HP. If not, the unit my not be OC'able without a pinmod (not likely :( ).

    Good luck.

it's getting to hot for my liking (sure it's only 75 or so but still, metal top)

Alright yall, moment of truth... I'm buying tonight or tomorrow morning.

    I'm a gamer.
    I want to play FFXIV.
I already have a gaming desktop but I'm studying abroad for a year.
I don't need large hard drive/pair of hard drives.
I will be in lecture halls and really like the compact size and slice batteries of the 14.

Should I go with the 14 or the 17?

    @ coprhead6

I highly recommend that you buy an Envy 14 for school and a PS3 for FF14. A lot of people are going to have to play on gibbed settings with current laptops, a Ps3 to play would be so much easier.

Seriously a PS3 can handle it in a heartbeat, it would be so much cheaper to get a deec laptop and a ps3 separately, I'm sure you could even @(*#&%rig your laptop to be a keyboard or use its screen for the ps3.

Whoa, just noticed, same number O_O

Wish the Envy 14 was designed for FF14

I have the brightness at max and am sitting in a cafe with a large picture window to my left. Th light is really not that bright at all. However, I have had this problem in my room with only the overhead light on.

This is the most reflective screen I have ever seen. I have read about anti-reflective films that solve this problem, but don't know how good they are. It seems like my search for a computer must go on. Hopefully I can find a 14-15 inch with anti-reflective or matte screen that has good battery life, 1600 X 900 display and can play HD effortlessly. Anybody know of one PM me (don't want to clutter up this thread).

It's all in there already. I don't want to make a list because those not experienced can <s>do damage</s> screw up their system. If I make a list...

... given my illustrious authority figure-ness-ness... (Applause, cheer)

...peeps will think that it is mandatory as opposed to optional.

And when it's optional, if they screw up, it's on them. You know, the old, "no one said you HAD to do it. So why did ya? Huh? Huh?"

Kidding. Kidding. I tease. I tease.

As for drivers, BIOS updates and the like, just visit Justin's driver section. It's always kept up to date with Guinea Pig ™ commentary in the respective threads.

Not all components are made equally. Some are able to OCed high and some can't oc at all.

For example, in my g51, I was able to oc my P7350 to 2.5ghz stablely while others couldn't even get to 2.2ghz

Why don't you just put the luminosity at max to outshine glares ?

Or just like 99% of new laptops user, buy an antiglare film like this one ?

But since envy is 14.6" you should take the 15.6" one, it should fit over the bezel a tad bit, or just cut it right yourself. Hell there's even cheaper ones on ebay.
Or you can take your ruler on your envy and order it custom sized http://www.buyviewguard.com/en-us/15.4"-Widescreen/custom-made.php

Well a laptop is fine to play FF14 at poor settings, but you won't get any higher than that unless you have a gaming designed laptop, which will be neither sleek or compact.

Seriously a PS3 can handle it in a heartbeat, it would be so much cheaper to get a deec laptop and a ps3 separately, I'm sure you could even @(*#&%rig your laptop to be a keyboard or use its screen for the ps3.

Or look into some of the new Asus 15'' which can probably run it on not craptastic settings.

I love the Envy 14'', and it will suit my gaming needs, but it is not a gaming designed machine for these next gen games,

    Lith. you're on 10.3

I'm on 10.6 due to magic and getting extremely lucky.

also it may just be your components.

    also also I just got a 7546 3dmark06 score with 550/800.

    no crash.

1 issue in the firefly forest where it was stuttering a bit here and there (like in the FFXIV benchmark).

it stuttered that way stock though (but on the 10.6 catalyst drivers.) So...

    *shrugs*

edit: right there was also an issue at the start of deep freeze (happened at stock and OC 550/800) where the beginning ground the textures started poking through each other. Again, I'm blaming the 10.6 catalyst drivers

Hey magus, I am using the graphics drivers from HP's website, and when I try to install 10.6 from ATI, I get the error that I have incomparable hardware. How did you get 10.6 on your envy?

I got them on there by installing the 10.6 alpha. Then I waited like 3-5 minutes at the error screen (black screen blinking cursor in the top left). Afterwords I power cycled and just started windows normally. I had the 10.6 alpha on.

Next I used a full download of the 10.6 release (someone posted it on here, both alpha and the 10.6 release) and it installed without any problems (no blinking cursor screen that wouldn't go away)

Oh, and more importantly I have a friend who plays games with a mouse, in case you were wondering.

So, although you won't be able to play it on the go, you'll be able to buy a ps3 for around ~$300, maybe you can find discounts, but from there you can USB in a mouse / keyboard, and play just like you would on a computer.

Lose mobility, gain dope graphics and larger screen.

Also, Envy 14 WILL be able to run it (not amazingly) on the go, so save money on gaming laptop, get compact laptop, run it when necessary crappy, play on ps3 with mouse and keyboard when playing for large amount of time

    ;D

There are even mouses designed for ps3,

My friend plays COD with his mouse and destroys all the analog controlled gamers, its mean XD

Can anyone help me on a touchpad issue with the Envy 14? I was wondering if there's a way to disable the button area from being part of the touch pad? I have a tendency of keeping my thumb rested on the left click however since the buttons on this laptop are now part of the touch pad area my cursor keeps jumping around! I didn't see anything in the settings area (maybe I missed something)?
