    Hey guys, I found a g.flacon 128gb ssd for 200 bucks.
Is gfalcon a reliable company and is this a good deal?

    Thanks!

MSI Afterburner works if you go change a setting in MSIAfterburner.cfg, from

    EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0
    to
    EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 1

    Then start it.

it only maxes out at 585. some people crash at anything above 500/800, I..well I managed to be stable with furmark at 585/885 (regular stability, not xtreme burning)

but well that maxed out at 76 C gpu, and a little bit lower cpu.

SC2 heats things up real good it seems

    Higher pressure = Better temps.

You can't really put too much pressure on the CPU. At some point the pressure would crush the core, but you would never be able to put that much pressure on this CPU with the current retention mechanism.

About the only way you could crush your core is if you leveraged the plate onto the core by tightening one side of screws more than the other. Just make sure you tighten down the plate evenly. Half a turn on one screw, then go to opposite corner, half a turn, then go to screw to the right, half a turn, then go to opposite corner, half a turn. Rinse repeat till you can't tighten it anymore.

Can you then leave it OC'd like that, then switch to integrated graphics and retain all the original battery life goodness?

If that's the case, then i don't see any negatives to OC'ing your GPU on this notebook.

not sure how it would act.

but well. you can easily create a second profile that resets to stock (and trigger it by some keyboard combination like ctrl+shift+q)

MSI needs to be open to setup the OC. not sure if it lats upon reboot.

Could you try testing it? Leave the GPU OC'd, then switch to Intel graphics, then back and see if it still retained it's OC. Then like switch to Intel graphics, reboot laptop, then switch back to dedicated and see if your OC is still retained.

Or would you have to enable the OC every single time you switched to the GPU via a key combination?

Magus, have you tried (or have you heard of anyone that has) taking the heatsink off the GPU to apply better thermal compound?

I've seen a couple people say they've done their CPU, but I haven't seen anyone mention doing it to their GPU.

With the heatsink/fan combo, you remove it, you'll have to replace the thermal compound on both CPU and GPU anyhow. It's one unit covering both processors (and maybe GPU RAM).

    Folks -

I did a clean install and I have everything working fine however my battery icon is only showing % complete and NOT time remaining. I noticed posts on this with other HP laptops; does anything know how I can fix this? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate.

    PLEASE HELP!

We haven't even achieved an OC that gets it past 80 yet, and high 80s are safe.

thermal compound reduces temps 3-4 degrees.

It's really not needed. This thing has monster cooling already.

I hooked up my Envy to my Onkyo receiver and I have been unable to have the HDTV be my main display. The only thing that sends an image to my HDTV is the Extend Desktop option. Also I always have black boarders around the image, it doesn't fill the screen and is windowboxed.

Does anyone know what I can do to make my HDTV the dominant display? When I sent it to the main no image is sent to my HDTV.

Also anyway to make it fill the whole screen?

I have been having a most annoying problem ever since I got my Envy 14 5 or 6 days ago.

It consistently disconnects to my wireless network, over and over again, about every hour or so. I had an IBM laptop running XP previously and these disconnects never happened. Is anyone else having this issue?

I have tried everything, including contacting HP for tech support. They said that removing the connection and manually adding it would definitely solve it. It didn't.

I have looked on other forums for possible solutions. I have tried setting the roaming aggressiveness to 0, letting the router automatically set its channel as HP had recommended to me, disabling IP helper service. These did not work.

Windows has not been able to automatically restore the connection. Each time, I have to manually disable and reenable the wireless card through the network connections window. This works every time immediately; however, it is a serious hassle when you have done this for the hundredth time. I am seriously considering returning my laptop and getting something cheaper.

It is interesting that disabling and reenabling my wireless card from the keyboard through the f10 toggle does not restore the connection, but the manual way through software does. Has anybody else had this problem, and know how to fix it?

I am running WEP - HP said that this was the best one to run on Windows 7 as WPA, WPA-PSK, and WPA 2 were not stable and can have connection problems. I am located maybe 15 feet from the router and have never experienced problems on my other laptop before.

It is also ironic that it disconnected while I was trying to post this. I had just reconnected it about 5 minutes ago.

have you tried going into Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display ? If so you should be able to have the option to set the display resolution (1080p) and make the tv your only active display

the hp options will essentially either duplicate or extend the 1600x900 resolution, and thats why you are getting the borders, since the tv is reproducing it pixel to pixel

I've had it with this whine, my envy is going to be sent back. Its a great machine, i just can't use it because the cpu noise is so annoying. I am kind of hesitant to buy one of a similar configuration (i5 450m). I think I might bump up to the i7...how do they compare to the i5s heat and battery life wise.

Also, can i just call hp and ask to pay the difference to upgrade the processor or am i going to have to get a refund on this laptop then buy a whole new one (separate orders).

The only way I can change it to 1080p is when I do extend desktop and make the HDTV the main one. However even then I still get window boxed.

I'm just plain unable to make the HDTV the only display.

I have a 450m and the whine has been getting worse (maybe I am just listening for it now). I can't even web browse without music on or headphones on now... I am sure its about the same chances since they will both whine given the same circumstances (low idle usage)

This will probably get lost in the flow of things (what with this forum running at LUDICROUS SPEED an all), but I just downloaded and ran PCMark Vantage, got 6720, and I wonder if the score is a little low. Specs are 520m, 8GB RAM, 500GB HD. It says my processor speed is 2.394, which I guess is right, but why didn't it overclock? (And why does it think my card is a 5750? Cuz the 5650 is a downclocked version?)

As of now there are small fixes you can try. I've tried them all with no luck. I am giving mine another week and seeing if hp will release another version of its bios before i return mine. From what i've read, its an easy fix assuming they give us more freedom with the bios, which they might seeing how they are going to get a rediculous amount of RMA's because of it.

You should be able to hit the function key that has the little screen logo with a line on each side and it will popup your options, choose 'projector only'. Then depending on which version of CCC you have you should be able to go to 'desktop & displays' and while plugged into to your external, detect display and then hit the little black arrow next to the big monitor image and IIRC select 'display properties' and either select the output resolution or some CCC versions have a 'scaling' feature where you can expand the image to the outer edges of the external screen.

When you guys burned your recovery discs, did your dvd drive make a terrible squeaking noise? Mine's doing it right now, it's much worse than the cpu whine lol...I don't plan on burning many dvds or anything so it's not a big deal, just wondering if everyone's was this noisy/squeaky.

Okay I managed to get it to work correctly. I just kept messing with the "set as main" settings in both CCC and Windows itself and finally managed to make my HDTV the main display, while disabling the laptop's display. (happened randomly, but I'm sure it was a conflict between CCC's settings and Windows)

To fix the window boxing I went into CCC and within the properties of my HDTV display it has an option to set the overscanning percentage. So I just manually expanded the image to fit my HDTV's screen.

Let's see, 18 second boot times, Transfers my whole 28GB itunes music folder to my ipod in ~3.5 minutes, I transfer multi GB photo files every day out of the esata port on the E 15 to to RAID array backup at about 150MB/s oh and as an example; photoshop CS4 loads in less than 1.5 seconds compared to over 8 seconds on my desktop 7200 rpm HDD.......

    Random Write speed
    Random Read speed
    Access Time
    Heat (or lack thereof)
    Noise (my favorite reason)
Reliability (no moving parts to break)

Those are the biggest reasons to use an SSD.

This is an old review, but all the new ones don't even list HDD's anymore.
Intel X25-M G2: Dissected and Performance Preview - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

See how small the bar is for the Velociraptor on random read/write? They don't even show the bar for the access time because it would push all the SSD bars so small you wouldn't be able to read any of them because the performance gap is that huge.

Are you saying that you have an SSD and it's only running a file copy at 33mb/s (is that MegaBITS or MegaBytes)?

SSD has literally zero access time. Most have high sequential read, lower write speeds, but the big kicker is random read/write speeds. Pretty much all are faster than even a velociraptor drive. So in general SSD's will perform every operation even faster than the fastest commercial desktop drive available.
