i have another question: instead of burning all the DVDs for Recovery Discs, can i just download it to my external hard drive? Thanks..
-
OK, just downloaded the new Turboboost drivers, and it made no difference for any of this. I'm all out of ideas.
-
My processor selection is grayed out too but you can right click in the CPU tab and choose which core to monitor. I'm not sure if the processor selection dropdown is meant to be unclickable.
-
Could you try playing 1600x900 and see if it can run medium @ around 30 fps?
Edit: Sorry if this belongs in the wrong thread. Don't hurt me 2.0.

Is there a place or thread for battery life optimization techniques?
I'm getting two standard batteries and would like to at least get 7 hours with light use such as email, youtube, word, excel, and stuff like that. -
No. But you can use drive imaging software to clone your drive. Acronis, Ghost and Macrium Reflect will do that. Be sure to clone all partitions.
-
Batter life log thread.
Also see first post in the guide section. There's a link to a program called granola. -

thanatos, did you ever mess with that boot option stuff?
go to msconfig (type it in that search box at the bottom of the start menu) --> boot --advanced options --> number of processors.
if that's ticked, untick it and reboot. Maybe that's messing things up. -
Tried that. Only "Core #0" pops up.
-
I did mess with it! I'll try right now.
-
YAY IT WORKED! Both processors are showing, core speeds are going down and so are temps! +1 rep for you!
2.0! Put this on page 1 please! Do not mess with processor boot option! -
Its from that voltage regulator next to the CPU; its right under that copper pipe.
-
Yeah, but where?
-
There are way too many people messing with things that they are unfamiliar with because others who are familiar with it are doing it to slightly improve performance.
-
It didn't work for me my idle temps are still high.
room temp 75F
core #0 40C-42C -
Maybe near the clean install guides?
-
True. Actually, as I recall, they guy who suggested it wasn't even familiar with it. He just said that it "struck him as wrong" or something. Serves me right I suppose.
-
well right now its at 38 but before it was as high as like 52...
-
Ok, after watching some YouTube videos someone posted of other laptops with CPU whine I see why those with the whine are complaining. That would drive me nuts. Fortunately, I don't have any whining.
-
...just got back from dinner, opened my comp from sleep, plugged in my usb mouse, and now when I try to scroll it adjusts the volume...
whats that about? I WANNA SCROLL lol -
Mine are both back to 38-40 now, thank gawd.
-
Try pressing Fn+ whatever to adjust your volume and then it might go away?
-
I didn't do a clean install, still on stock install. It's a good gaming mouse (MX518) so it shouldn't have issues playing a game, i think it was just fps issues really
-
Thanks for the link to the app! I know blackviper long time ago, but yeah it's nice to have the app do that for you with one click.
-
That is still high for the envy 14 people are getting 20-30C on idle(room temp 70-75F)
My temps on idle are 40C average in 75F room(50% to high) -
20s? what? how??
my lowest is 35 now... -
My temps are hovering around 35...when are the fans set to kick in, 35? Because they keep cycling on and off which is almost as annoying as this cpu whine and not being able to scroll with my mouse rofl...I think this baby's goin back
I love the laptop but I want one without bs issues! -
afaik, the youtube videos on cpu whine are all several years old and document a differnet issue. The whine on the i-series CPUs is so high-pitched and so faint you would need a professional quality microphone and silence approaching the levels of a studio in order to capture it.
-
LOL, now when I two finger scroll with my TRACKPAD it adjusts the volume...
BRB, need to reboot -
I see. I wish someone locally had a whiner so I could hear it for myself.
-
Damn, what'd you eat for dinner!?
-
lol check this stupid sht out YouTube - HP Envy 14 volume issues
now the button above enter, |, is muting and unmuting too, jeez, could 3rvx be causing this? -
LOL, makes changing your volume much much easier.
-
just a guess, but could it think an fn key or something is pushed down?
-
hey guys im thinking about purchasing this laptop, do you guys have any concerns/issues with it or any reasons why I shouldnt? Im looking for a small fast laptop with a decent graphics card, high battery life(which i believe this has) and high resolution.
-
Lol ok, reboot just fixed it, I can scroll to my heart's content now
On another note, my battery life seems to be kind of terrible. I haven't been able to time a full run down yet, but BatteryBar is saying 2:40 as full lifetime, and it went down about 25% in 40 minutes-ish, which seems to support that. On integrated graphics of course, just light web browsing, catching up on these forums lol, screen is on full brightness though but that shouldnt do THAT much should it? -
Is anyone getting any static from the headphone jack when there is no audio playing? I understand this is normal for laptops but I thought this computer would address that problem
-
its the best laptop i've ever owned, but isnt without some issues (some common, some rare)
-
no
did you crank any db levels up or something? mess with audio settings? -
what are some of the common ones? can they be remedied with tech support, or are they unhelpful as well?
-
The screen typically accounts for 40 to 50 percent of battery drain, so if you lower the brightness a bit you should get significantly longer life. I get about 4 hours on low brightness with the 450m.
-
- some people are getting a high pitched frequency from their cpus; depends how good your hearing is and if you get one of the troubled units. its mostly for i5 buyers
- screen is great, but viewing angles and black levels suck. I can't wait for OLED displays to come out...
- fan never really stays off even when its cool, maybe a bios update will address this...
- some units are also shipping with scrapes and rust....mine had a VERY SMALL bit of this (like a quarter cm) but others posted about a lot more, havent heard much since the other initial posts -
and what are your thoughts on the network card? does it get good reception? thanks
+rep by the way
-
I had heard from some this goes away after a clean install. What is the verdict on this?
I don't think I care if the fan is on all the time, as long as it's not terribly loud (and has a significant battery life impact). -
the wifi is terrific. i'm 2 floors above my router and getting a really solid connection. no drops to date yet.
upload speeds are higher than i expected -
i lol'd when i saw the video.
-
nah, i did a clean install. same deal. also have "fan always on" off in bios. -
ZAH, WARUDO!
Cpu whine = not fixable without swapping mobo
;D -
Since you're looking for a laptop with a decent graphics card, you should know that the GPU is underclocked fairly significantly. The 5650 in the envy 14 is clocked at 450mhz whereas most other laptops with this card have it at 550mhz.
