OK, just downloaded the new Turboboost drivers, and it made no difference for any of this. I'm all out of ideas.

My processor selection is grayed out too but you can right click in the CPU tab and choose which core to monitor. I'm not sure if the processor selection dropdown is meant to be unclickable.

Could you try playing 1600x900 and see if it can run medium @ around 30 fps?

Edit: Sorry if this belongs in the wrong thread. Don't hurt me 2.0.

Is there a place or thread for battery life optimization techniques?

I'm getting two standard batteries and would like to at least get 7 hours with light use such as email, youtube, word, excel, and stuff like that.

No. But you can use drive imaging software to clone your drive. Acronis, Ghost and Macrium Reflect will do that. Be sure to clone all partitions.

thanatos, did you ever mess with that boot option stuff?

go to msconfig (type it in that search box at the bottom of the start menu) --> boot --advanced options --> number of processors.

if that's ticked, untick it and reboot. Maybe that's messing things up.

There are way too many people messing with things that they are unfamiliar with because others who are familiar with it are doing it to slightly improve performance.

Ok, after watching some YouTube videos someone posted of other laptops with CPU whine I see why those with the whine are complaining. That would drive me nuts. Fortunately, I don't have any whining.

I didn't do a clean install, still on stock install. It's a good gaming mouse (MX518) so it shouldn't have issues playing a game, i think it was just fps issues really

My temps are hovering around 35...when are the fans set to kick in, 35? Because they keep cycling on and off which is almost as annoying as this cpu whine and not being able to scroll with my mouse rofl...I think this baby's goin back
I love the laptop but I want one without bs issues!

afaik, the youtube videos on cpu whine are all several years old and document a differnet issue. The whine on the i-series CPUs is so high-pitched and so faint you would need a professional quality microphone and silence approaching the levels of a studio in order to capture it.

Lol ok, reboot just fixed it, I can scroll to my heart's content now :)

On another note, my battery life seems to be kind of terrible. I haven't been able to time a full run down yet, but BatteryBar is saying 2:40 as full lifetime, and it went down about 25% in 40 minutes-ish, which seems to support that. On integrated graphics of course, just light web browsing, catching up on these forums lol, screen is on full brightness though but that shouldnt do THAT much should it?

The screen typically accounts for 40 to 50 percent of battery drain, so if you lower the brightness a bit you should get significantly longer life. I get about 4 hours on low brightness with the 450m.

    - some people are getting a high pitched frequency from their cpus; depends how good your hearing is and if you get one of the troubled units. its mostly for i5 buyers

    - screen is great, but viewing angles and black levels suck. I can't wait for OLED displays to come out...

    - fan never really stays off even when its cool, maybe a bios update will address this...

    - some units are also shipping with scrapes and rust....mine had a VERY SMALL bit of this (like a quarter cm) but others posted about a lot more, havent heard much since the other initial posts

I had heard from some this goes away after a clean install. What is the verdict on this?

I don't think I care if the fan is on all the time, as long as it's not terribly loud (and has a significant battery life impact).

Since you're looking for a laptop with a decent graphics card, you should know that the GPU is underclocked fairly significantly. The 5650 in the envy 14 is clocked at 450mhz whereas most other laptops with this card have it at 550mhz.
