I have some theories about this...

Most likely is supposition A, that ATI binned these chips at a lower clockspeed, as they couldn't run at the regular speed of 550MHz, and are sold at a lower price. This is a very common practice among CPU/GPU vendors, as it saves product and cuts costs. For example, a desktop HD 5850 is a lower binned HD 5870. The Core i5-520M is essentially a higher binned Core i5-450M. Same goes for the Core i7-620M, and so on.

Supposition B is less likely, that ATI underclocked the chips and lowered the voltage to reduce power consumption. It makes little sense, however. Option A is very likely.

I really see no reason aside from these as to why the GPU would come underclocked, unless there is some kind of large oversight.

Considering one user stated his GPU was not stable above 500MHz, option A seems to make more sense.

Your friend seems to be throwing all sorts of buzzwords at you to impress you. He is stating the obvious to you. Just return your machine and get a new one. And the reason I say this is because it will torture you while your return window gets smaller.

Alright guys I think I might have recorded the CPU whine...as the video states, I was trying to show the fan cycling, but the camera ended up picking up the whine
    check it out
YouTube - HP ENVY 14 Fan Cycling/CPU Whine

BTW, the whine isn't that loud in real life, the camera seems to amplify it a lot. It is that frequency though

As far as I've read here, the only occurance of this issue on the E 14 was with 'fubuki' and it was becuase he change the number of cores to boot with in system config. Also this 'problem' has not been reported once on over 1000 pages of E 15 owners loung posts. Dozens of us tried loading a limited number of cores to try and exend battery life, with every concieivable variation. All these attempts resulted in '0' power savings! And in most cases worse battery life and more heat. As far as you "demanding an explaination...." from me, sorry but you can find your own, as it's seems like you already know everything.....

Here are some responses from others who tried using system config to limit the number of cores:

As far as your other reply about your 'reg optimizer' program:

Quote: "Bringing back the reg file again, messing with services has never been dangerous in any way, since even with all services disabled or all services on a computer still runs. And opening with notepad clearly shows which services it changes and to which value. That said if you dont want to use my reg you can use any of the 151541 service optimizer software out of the web, it does the exact same thing...... "

Again, you missed my whole point. I don't care how 'safe' it is! I have already tweaked my 'services' the way a want them. You never addressed the important issue and my question. Will running your app change any settings I've already changed? And if I have use the 'restore to default' if there was a problem, would it reset my system back to Win 7 defaults? This would undo all the tweaks I've already made to my system. Again it's not worth my time or risk of potential problems, so as I said before, thanks but no thanks.

BTW, your .zip file I downloaded must have got corrupted as nothing would show in note pad but a few lines of gibberish, Just checked it again and the whole .zip is 2.4Kb. Probably my screwy 3G modem....

You have an i5-430M? This wasn't an option for US builds, so I'm guessing it was an option in some countries.

Also, as others have stated (but many haven't talked about), I believe the processor can run at this speed as long as only one or two threads are actually under load. Under a full 100% load, I believe the processor will clock back down to 2.27GHz.

We can go on and on about saying those that don't have the whine just can't hear it...BUT I can definitively say my fan is not cycling like it's on steroids like yours. That is reason enough to send that sucker back.

Why not back up your registry settings if you are worried? Then you can simply import and restore them if you don't like his configuration.

Simply run regedit.exe, go to File, then click Export, and save the resulting .reg file somewhere safe. You can just click Import next time to import your old configuration.

Ah, I understand. I must have been away on one of those days, as I did check the Envy 14 page every so often for any possible configuration changes.

would anyone recommend the i3 version if I do some light gaming and use it mostly for school? Also would that run cooler and last longer on battery?

Also did anyone get the HP care package? (at 275 bucks! for 2 year) is it worth it, or is the 1 year out of box warranty good enough?

    Thanks!

    I have headphones on.

I mean I may barely hear something if I turn the sound up.

ah. Yeah so that IS the sound. I hear it over the fans when they cycle (and over your watch or whatever that ticking noise is)

    that's annoying

Lol what! It's the main noise in the video, the constant high pitched noise.
    Oy.

My fan is not set to always on, maybe I should just change it back and see what happens. And yea, my battery life seems like garbage.

Edit: lol wow, I didn't even notice that ticking sound in the video, it's a clock about 10 feet away from the laptop. funny.

The Core i3 will do fine for those tasks. Will it run cooler? Probably not. Will it last longer on battery? Maybe, maybe not. As 2.0 said, no more discussion of Turbo Boost and its impact on battery life in this thread, unless someone has some hard proof of anything.

That being said, I would suggest the i5-450M, as it is only $50 more and is an all-around great performer. If you really need the extra $50, the Core i3 will be fine for all light tasks and more.

I think my laptop finally ships tomorrow.

I've been using my HP DV6000 for about 3 years now, and I am pretty used to its loudness and fans that it did not bother me until I read about the whine noises in this thread. I normally play music 24/7 with my laptops, hopefully this I won't be bugged by the whine many users are complaining about. *crosses fingers*

Or have a couple kids, you'll be used to that whining...

So far from what I could gather, QC issues I've noted are:

    - CPU whine
    - difficult to remove bottom panel
    - stuck pixels
    - gap at trackpad
    - crackling headphone audio
    - wrong OS installed
    - only single CPU detected
    - scratched/rubbing hinge
    - strange LCD visual anomaly at angles
    - deformed chassis at DVD
    - HP lit logo issues
    - scrolling changes volume
    - wobbly
    - fan cycling

    Anything I missed?

    it's that twofinger scroll program.

two-finger-scroll - Project Hosting on Google Code

you can set it to smooth (and it'll emulate uh setting the mouse wheel to 1 even if it's on 3...or at least it'll make it move smoother than 3 even though it's on 3)

also. has a few things for double/triple tap/whatever

Do you think setting double finger and triple finger tap is better than the three finger slide that synaptics has? I hadn't noticed that before, but I just tried it and it seems to be pretty usable.
Also just found the tap twice and drag rofl, thats a godsend!

    Added, thanks.

I'm planning to send an email to HP, I'll find a good contact, indicating these issues and refer them to this forum for details. They may be aware, but maybe this will kick them in the butt to get their act together.

Maybe we can all get some restitution. A $100 gift card to HP or something, who knows, but considering all the headaches so far, and I'd put this higher than most launches, I'll feel very fortunate if mine is in pristine condition.
