IMO it depends on the MBP you're looking at...
13: slimmer lighter more of a portable than a wannabe desktop replacement
15: lower res, larger screen with slower hardware and a higher price.

I'd say buy a MBP 13 or wait for the Envy 14, but the 14 kills the MBP 15 unless you've got a fixation with 15" screens.

So its 8:06am in Shanghai right now, and their day is starting off for Wednesday July 7th. This means in 12 hours (8am US CST) when i go to work, if I don't see a shipped notification there is a good chance its delayed because their work day is done...

    all theory though :)

Game based benchmarks do have the ability to directly compare performance. So a test of a 520m vs. 450m will answer the question as to which is more powerful under which situations.

Please run Vantage at 1600x900, and any videogame benchmark you can at stated video settings. pweeaaasssseeee!!!

I have to object, the new 2010 MacBook Pro 13 gets this kind of battery life:

That's while playing music in the background too. We can get maybe 4 solid hours on a single charge on the Envy 14. The slice will up this to around 8 hours, probably a little better. The 2010 MBP is still getting about 9 hours and 45 minutes. I hate to admit it, but the Envy 14 is not going to win on battery life, even with the slice...

Still, the Envy 14 is a powerful machine in a small form factor. Battery life so far looks adequate.

Edit: I seriously would love a CULV or just a 25W TDP processor in the Envy 14. Really. It would make for a near flawless notebook. Great performance, great battery life.

If you guys are trying to compare the 450 and the 520, the 430 and 520 have a <2% difference on the gaming subscore. The 450m is at *least* as fast as the 430, so I'd say there's going to still be a <2% (read: insignificant) difference between the two.

For the CPU, a benchmark such as wprime would give you better comparison of CPU performance.

The thing with Futuremark benchmarks is that they give a compiled final score. So if you look at just the final number, it doesn't really give a true comparison since the GPU score will be more or less the same. I guess you can look at the CPU score, but it's large program to install just to get that number. Whereas wPrime is a small program and can better stress the CPU.

    oh man, APs...
well i got credit for 1st semester of physics and math (and stats, but never needed it). As a mechanical engineering major, having those two free slots open to me has been very valuable. because of it, I am able to squeeze in a Japanese minor too without overloading every semester. Definitely worth it.

Also, still says "Order in production (Estimated to ship on July 7, 2010)"

HEY 2.0, you have an Envy? what do u use it for beside just regular commercial computation?

Like will the envy line help me? I know some say that getting a quad for the envy will kill the battery life. So Ami wasting my time on the ENVY? Do i need a mobile workstation?

Im sorry for re-posting this, but the thread goes too fast XD

If you need that much power, consider the Envy 15 or 17 if you don't mind the price premium and you want the looks/construction/price combination that these machines offer. Bear in mind that battery life with an i7 will suck, but it is probably your best bet to get that much power on the go. Frankly, I'd call the Envy 17 a mobile workstation - the only thing it doesn't have is a workstation graphics card, and imo the latest ATI/nvidia chips all have more than enough computer power to go around, and DX11 has its own GPGPU language that is supported by both ATI and nvidia chips.

i went for the quad core. I thought forget about battery, i can plug it in wherever basically. Those 8 threads are going to be FANTASTIC for 3DS max (i'm trying to render now on just a single core, and it's miserable... :()

EDIT: I also really like the size and quality of the e14 over the e15. no backlit keyboard + E2E glass was kinda a deal breaker for me.

if it turns out to be too hot, i'll have to return it i guess.

Lagitup is pointing you in the right direction.

Though, if you have a high enough budget, I would seriously look into the Elitebooks, specifically the 8xxxW series, for what you are considering.

Myself? I have 2 HDX 9000 Dragons among other notebooks plus a tablet. Envy 14 is on my short list but I rarely am an early adopter. I wait for the kinks to be ironed out and the knowledge base to build before I take the plunge. Especially since I tend to keep notebooks for around 4 to 5 years.

Plastic or not, it's much better than non edge-to-edge laptops. It always seems like they collect a ton of dust in the gap between what is usually plastic, and the screen. It's kind of gross. I guess I like to keep my computer bits clean.

Yeah, i have a core 2 quad Q8200 desktop, I don't know if it will be able to handle all that work and personal explicit research ;). Plus if the 3D modelling and CAD is bottlenecked by gfx...then my nvidia 210 won't be enough, and if I want to upgrade its gonna cost alot (i'll have to buy a new PSU and all that :()

But is the DirectCompute supported by Mainstream and stuff? I know CUDA is but its exclusive and the ATI Stream...well I didn't here any recent development. :(

Yeah, Im listening to all your opinions. Also to be honest, the elitebook aren't available in Canada, we have no customization ability and such... and Idk if the elitebooks have better build quality, though the lenovo workstations do have a bang for performance, but idk i hear it has heating problems with gaming and the Nvidia QUADRO FX 800 isn't that good, i hear nvidia price tag is high and they like block certain parts of the graphics card....

I don't believe Maple takes advantage of multi threading. MATLAB has some basic built in multi-threading, but to really take advantage of it you will need to use the parallel processing toolkit.

If I were you, I would check each of those applications to see what kind of multi threading support they offer. I don't think a lot of compilers take advantage of multi threading, but I might be wrong.

MBP only get insane battery life in certain situations when apple energy savings can kick in (light browsing, office use, data entry...).
Saying the mbp will always outlast the envy is not 100% right.

For example i'll quote a well known review about the 2010 13" mbp.

The envy with a slice can easily beat that in my opinion since it requires less luminosity to watch movies, on energy saving plus the turbo boost that can be turned off, that's a movie watching usage example.
So far every review shows that whenever a mbp is used for cpu intense tasks or browsing the battery life drops drastically more than on a windows based machine simply because apple's custom powersaving features are aimed at low cpu load situations.

Another review of laptopmag where the hp dm4 reaches 5 hours with a similar battery to the envy 14.

That's basically a 3 hours gap if the envy performs the same as the hp dm4 for battery life. So in the end, with a slice, the envy will obviously outlast the mbp in any scenario other than near-iddling with 8 to 10 hours.

Not yet. Season 4. Have to catch it again. I was watching 1-3 recently. And after having watched them over again...

... it really put Rita's death in an emotional perspective. At the end of season 4 I just sat stunned. It's like I felt stupid for not seeing that coming but then at the same time I was sort of numb. Most of the time I thought of Rita as eye candy (Julie Benz is a cutie). But watching the first three seasons again, I see her in a new light.

Ha! Y'all ain't know about the spoiler tag, did ya? (Don't abuse it or we'll lose it.)

REALLY looking forward to season 5 this fall. Sending out cards to friends and family that say "Do not call. Do not come over. Sundays between 9PM and 10PM starting this fall. And if you happen to stop by earlier in the day for my famous Sunday dinner, kindly leave by 7PM without prompting. Many thanks."

Thanks. This is an interesting read. It confirms options like the 1366x768 screen, and broadcom WLAN (in addition to centrino-N). Also shows suprising options like Core 2 Duo P6000 CPU, granted things like that are probably only for certain foreign countries and not the US.

    Good news:
There apparently will be a Beats Edition of the ENVY 14 (just search "Beats Edition" in that PDF for all the references to it).

    Bad news:
It seems as if they skimped on the display on the ENVY 14 Beats Edition. Quoted from page 75:
14.5-in, LED, HD, AntiGlare, flush glass SVA display assembly for use only on Beats Edition computer models
14.5-in, LED, HD, AntiGlare, flush glass SVA display assembly for use only on standard computer models
14.5-in, LED, HD+, AntiGlare, flush glass WVA display assembly for use only on standard computer
    models

It seems also that there will be a standard version with HD resolution (1366x768) vs. HD+ (1600x900).

    WVA = Wide Viewing Angle
    SVA = Standard Viewing Angle?

This is all speculation based on the manual.

Envy 17's have had some build quality issues. You probably noticed from the E17's owner's thread. It's been hit or miss actually.

Envy 15 might be a better bet over E14. You get more screen real estate (1920x1080) and the ATI 5830. Plus the possibility of dual HDDs or SDDs or combo of each.

As for battery life, you can always get a 2nd battery and hibernate between swaps.

i think one of the envy 14 configurations ( HP ENVY 14-1011tx Notebook PCProduct Specifications - HP Customer Care (Australia - English)) comes with the i5-540m, which is what that guy in Taiwan received in some previous post.
