    Has there been any rumors about the release of other hybrid drives? People keep saying wait and until another one comes out but there dosen't seem to be any concrete timetable. I want a hybrid drive but I don't want it to become outdated right after I buy it but then again I don't want to go a long time without it and then go the the hassle of cloning my disk later either. What should I do?

    Yeah, my school has a VPN license set up, so we're given remote access to everything we could possible need. I plan on going to the labs, which they update every year (not necessarily replace, but update RAM and stuff). That's why I hope by getting the Envy that it will be good for stuff like MATLAB for four years, as opposed to spending $600 twice, every two years.

    Yeah, I had a really tough time picking through what I actually would need. I'm getting the laptop as a graduation present, so I want to make sure I spend wisely. I went ahead and got the 520-M despite the remarks about the 450. That extra boost can't HURT it. I think we'll have similar uses [engineering stuff, photoshop, movies, music]. I'm hopeful that the Envy will be able to handle everything for my 4 years of undergrad. If it doesn't perform as well as needed, then I only have ### engineering computer labs to go work on. I don't see photoshop or anything else evolving beyond its power anytime soon, as I'm typing on a 4-year old Dell inspiron right now that handles photoshop just fine.

    I opened them up in different tabs and made sure that it was all within the same browser window. (meaning no pop-ups) Then I just went and made my order within the bing.com tab. I've already got pending confirmations from bing.com and fatwallet.

    well, fatwallet says "Cash Back programs can only be used separately and can not be combined to receive Cash Back on the same HP order."
    Bing says "Entering a coupon code at the payment page will void your cashback. Also, beginning 10/2009, the Friends & Family program, HP Academy program, and the Employee Purchase Program can no longer be combined with cashback."

    Remember that HP pays bing and fatwallet money, so if they don't pay, you don't get your cashback.

    That being said, I used fatwallet on my order, but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't go through alone.

    HP ENVY 14 customizable Notebook PC

    * • Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    * • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    * • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    * • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    * • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 Graphics - For Quad Core Processors
    * • 14.5" diagonal HD+ HP Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900)
    * • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    * • HP TrueVision HD Webcam + Dual Digital Integrated Microphones
    * • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    * • HP Mobile Broadband

    My question is whether or not I'm good with the i7-720QM as opposed to the i7-840QM. I know that the only differences are the cache size and processor speed, but are there any other differences? (like better power management since its getting ~330mhz boost with the same power draw) I would have went for the SSD, but I'll upgrade later. Shipping date is July 9th.

    Has it been confirmed that that 160GB SSD is a G2 Intel? Because if it is or could be a G1, forget it.

    If it turns out to be a G1, my Envy 14 will be going straight back to HP.

    Guess HP is going to be missing their estimated ship date.

    Should I cancel my order and just get the 320GB Hard Drive? I don't want to pay so much for a crappy SSD that won't even be any better than a Hard Drive.

    I'd recommend that you wait for it and then when it arrives, check what kind of SSD it is and then decide if you want to return it or not.

    Hp keeps releasing coupons that excludes the envy series and I don't think they've ever that done before... I doubt they'll be releasing any huge coupons especially when bing cashback is dying. Just use the 10% discount with 5% fatwallet... then call when your order status says its in production and try to get another $100 from them, thats what I did at least.

    In for one...

    HP Envy 14
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)

    Order date July 5th.

    Estimated build date: 7
    No tracking number available

    Order dropped to factory
    (Estimated to ship on July 14, 2010)

    Also, I noticed people asking about Wifi cards. Specifically, Intel vs Broadcom. I read (I think the HP manual) that the Intel was primarily USA and Broadcom was outside the USA.

    I keep seeing you guys talk about matlab and using the envy 14 for matlab. I do pretty substantial FEA analysis using matlab, and for typical college use, the envy 14 will be way more than enough. Hell, I did most of my homework in matlab on my netbook. Using the commands tik and tok in your code will tell you the time it took your code to run. It was still fairly minimal for me on my netbook.

    I called 888-227-8451, its the number to hp resolution center. And I said I was promised a $100 discount because they messed up my previous order.. which they did. So I'm not sure that'll work for everyone but I've heard others saying they got money back saying other stuff like cdw offers it cheaper.

    You can use fatwallet and student discount together... but not bing cashback with.. anything.

    I didn't get it simply because it was too expensive. If I got it, it would mean I couldn't get the 160GB SSD. I've never had any problems with laptops so I'm hoping it will be the same for this one.

    Nope. Never buy extended warranties or accidental coverages. I've never needed it since I take care of my stuff (believe I still have functional stuff from the 70s). It's a money maker for companies and the useless spending doesn't make me warm and fuzzy on the inside. I also don't buy phone or screen protectors and I've been good.

    I'm not sure if you need an extremely powerful laptop for what you're doing but I would say the i5 would be enough. Plus you get a lot more battery life with the i5.

    That is in 1080p mode; I know this only because: if you compare the size of the text to the multitude of other Final Fantasy XIV Benchmark pictures, the text is then too small to be 720p.

    Here's something else which warrants my request to have the Final Fantasy XIV benchmark done in 720p:
    GPU and CPU Score List - FFXIVCore.com - Final Fantasy XIV Fansite - Page 3

    If you look at the chart linked above, you'll notice that each GPU's score increases by 2000 points or so if done in 720p versus 1080p.

    This might mean that Final Fantasy XIV will be playable in 720p on the Envy 14!

    Sh!t happens, and this is made out of ing aluminium, if it falls on the ground closed, the minimum I expect is for it to survive the fall with just a scratch.

    I was leaning towards the i5, however seeing that the i7 is just $100 more than the highest i5 option available had me thinking. Is there no way that the graphics card can be switched manually with an i7 processor?

    no.

    it's soldered into the motherboard and they use two completely different motherboards depending on if you pick a quad core processor or a dual core processor.

    edit: also yeah the integrated graphics card is a part of the i3 and i5 processors.
