Started to work again when I stopped game booster, it must have closed something that made it work, whatever it's fixed :)

Does anyone else have like noises when headphones are plugged in? I don't know what the words for it are in English but I can hear like small noise when I don't listen to anything, and I swear I can hear it even if I put music on if it's a slow tempo song or something, totally annoying!

Yeah my two previous Envy 17 SB's had that issue. Your going to need send it in for repair or get a replacement.
My currently 17 SB will very very rarely have that issue but doesn't last long what soever (a couple seconds then it goes away for hours or days).

Depending on the headphone the sound could be a high pitched whine or a static sound.

Ouch, that's the only down side on my machine so far at least, not even any cosmetic issues, don't think I'll risk sending it away and get something worse back.. I read in the envy 14 static headphone sound something thread that it might depend on the headphones too, sometimes on my HDX16 I could hear something similar in my headphones but even worse, but that wasn't all the time, so it might depend on them? Or is it 100% that the laptop headphone jacks are screwed up?

Very cool on the next day shipping...

Did you order the 17 or the 17 3D? I'm leaning towards the standard 17 to save some cash, but I am curious about the HDD speed on the 3D version. The standard 17 states 7200 rpm on both the website on PDF, but the 3D version shows 7200 on the website and 5400 on the PDF.

I went with the standard 17, which only comes with 6gb ram. Not really an issue, I can always change that later on in the future.

I also wanted to save some cash, so I didn't go with the 3D model. The standard Envy 17 was a great deal with the FULL HD screen, extra 9-cell battery and 1TB HDD

Well I tried 4 different headphones from low impedance to high impedance. HP recognizes it is the headphone jack, and they know how to fix them. I say send it in.

Think I'm gonna try to live with it since I had it at times on my HDX, mostly I don't hear it so, Since I'd say my laptop is without any other problems and I really don't wanna risk that IF they would replace it or mess it up, no I'm sticking with this :)

    But thanks!

true enough -- just be aware that part of the reason for this is that the quick ship models are supplied with half of the warranty (1 yr instead of 2).

As a guy showed in the E14's static headphone thread, turning off ehm the advanced power thing in the Beats program totally helped, took the noise away, if it stays like that I'm SUPER happy, not needing to send it in, cos I can live with having to change a setting to make it go away!

Is it a 1 time thing? Or do you have to change it every single time you power on the laptop?

I really don't know yet, cos it seems that every time I go in a map or let's say the Hard drive the noise comes back "// And then I have to open beats up again press it again and it gets all quiet, but comes back when I enter a map, that's just weird and silly, gosh makes me irritated.

    You have the same issue?

nice discovery! This deserves some validation (anyone receive a 2070NR quick ship? yet?). The spec sheet sure enough mentions full HD 1080p but it also mentions 3D, which isn't true. I hope this isn't a mistake...

a couple of other details to be aware of: in order to upgrade the warranty to 2 years on the quick-ship, the house-call option is required at a cost of $300. Also -- I noticed that the quick-ship models come with 6GB RAM. One needs to be aware that in order to upgrade 6GB to 8GB after market you have to replace ALL of the memory at approximately $160 (kingston msrp 1333MHz)

Mouse pad not being aligned bothered me immensley.... I removed the top cover and found the metal bracket which holds the pad in place, afftects the mouse pad. After bending it slightly my pad is almost flawless. The hardest part is removing the sticky feet to get to the screws. Much better than sending it in for weeks. :D

Oh and another thing about my noise in the headphones, I'm almost 100% sure there was no noise the other days, I really just noticed it today, and windows have been doing a lot of updates to, can that have something to do with it? Remembered that on my HDX16 windows did some update and a program kinda related to the sound stopped working.

Was wonder if anyone has found any benchmarks for the HP Envy 17 3D Sandy Bridge, trying to decide whether or not to get it or the Asus G53JW-3DE.

Both cost nearly the same, but the HP has stronger CPU, more RAM, and bigger screen, while the Asus has a stronger GPU. I heard that the Sandy Bridge has some integrated GPU capabilities or something as well.

Would really like to see some benchmarks though, can't manage to find any.

I have received units with dead pixels, human fingerprints or dust and other debris including what once looks like someone coughed inside the screen between layers, among other things. I looked at multiple brands at work, home and various retailers and did not spot any that had anything between LCD panel layers but It seems common on envy, unfortunately. I think the manual indicated disassembly of LCD may cause damage, seemed more related to an instructional for recycling than repair.

Major disappointment to hear and have personally seen issues like this. Eventually ends up being a balance of what you can tolerate ( though you should not have to) and what you may receive in another unit. Sometimes you get lucky, others you trade one problem for another. At least with stuff between the layers, sometimes it doesn't affect the display at any brightness setting or with any color background. Sometimes it shadows an area locally and effectively appears similar to stuck pixels. I have an earlier post listing some of the stuff I've personally seen on envy 17 3d's. I have family member with $300 acer laptop. That is cosmetically flawless all the way around. Envy blows performance away of course but disappointing about the screen items like this.

    THROTTLE JOCKEYS, please read below!!!

Any throttling testers verify and respond to poster's question above?

Bear with a n example followed by some additional info. I had a problem once with Hdmi out on battery power causing either external monitor or laptop screen or both to flutter. Hp could not resolve at various levels of case escalation. I called graphics card manufacturer and they suggested some notebook makers suffer from this but it could sometimes be resolvable by changing battery power options to full performance at expense of battery power. Issue resolved sure enough. So onto throttling and the pint......

So to the above posters question, have throttling tests been run on power option settings for high performance?

Also, drilling deeper into the ADVANCED settings in the power options we may find the min power sertings are at other than 100%. There is a separate caregory for graphics and primary power......

Example setting: Processor power management when PLUGGED IN:

Minimum is set to 5% on "HP recommended" by default. BBUUUTTT:
Minimum is set to 100% on HIGH POWER power setting

Can throttling be solved by simply adjusting the advanced settings? Or has someone eluded to trying this already? Bobmitch or someone may have mentioned this before. If not, weigh in......

Sooo...Update to my ssd install problems. RMA'd my intel 320 and just got the new one. Popped it in and it is a NO GO. The bios will NOT recognize it. Called hp and they said the bios is designed to lock out any SSD unless it was preconfigured (i.e. $630 option). I know this is not true because of how many people that have installed one but needless to say the bios WILL NOT recognize an intel 320 120gb drive. They said I was SOL and I should have bought the SSD option. Now I am left holding the bag with a envy with a 5400rpm drive, a $40 caddy, and a $240 SSD that I cannot use. Any suggestions.....

    Hi Guys,

I will also build in a SSD in my Envy 17 3D next week and I just have one question. If I install a retail Win7 64, can I get the notebook easily to the state where all hotkeys and graphics switch, WLAN, BT etc. etc. works fully? I would be also happy to get rid of the whole preinstalled crap which is not necessary for the basic functionality.

    @ Bobmitch
How should he install to the SSD if the bios does not find the SSD?

    Best regards,
    DvP

    P.S.: It will be a C300 128GB or maybe a m4.

The 2070NR is the "non" 3D model which comes with 6GB's of RAM and a full 1080p screen.

The 2090NR is the 3D model which comes with 8GB's of RAM and of course, 3D.

Both come with dual HDD's and both only have a 1 year warrenty. However, the 4 year house call option is only $300 for the 2090NR after discount...yet $550 on the 2070NR.

I'm still leaning towards the 2070NR. The EPP discounts allows a full 10% of the price on that model...(which won't matter for me because of my coupon)...which makes it a really good deal. Heck, my new dv6 only has a 1 year warrenty anyway.

My SSD (the one HP puts in the machine) isn't in the bios, either. Odd that no drives are. All there is, is the boot order. Make sure to put the SSD in SATA 0 (first one)...boot into the Win7 disk...it should find it...

In addition to SWSETUP...copy the TriDef folder too...it contains your HP activation for the 3D software. If you forget that one...you will end up paying for it...

I ordered mine through JR.com, no taxes, cheap shipping (~$14) and with 2% CB from FW. Its 2x 7200rpm 500gb hard drives raid 1 to 1TB. I dont find the screen bad at all. My previous laptop I ordered was a Dell XPS 17, yes it was cheaper and you obviously get what you pay for. That screen was horrible, the whole body is almost cheap plastic, had issues with the bluetooth, and I returned that asap. Needless to say, I love the build quality of the Envy, I kind of wish it was a 2 year warranty but it was way cheaper to buy this way. I had an Intel X25M 120gb SSD that I threw in and clean installed x64 Win7 Ultimate. Make sure to backup your SWSetup folder for HP applications, and use a program to get your Adobe serials if you need them (i used belarc). The only minor issues i had was the wifi driver, you need to switch to the older one because of the freezes and drops...the other i had an issue with random reboots. I think this is caused by the updated Intel Chipset driver from Intel.com, i went back to the older version and haven't experienced it again yet...knock on wood. Im probably not going to use the extra extended battery or the 500gb drives, so i'll probably sell those and get some cash back.

    Good to know...
I'm feeling better about going after the Quick Ship 2070NR (Non-3D). It is basically everything I wanted in a DV7. Actually, because of the outer design and (bad) mouse pad....it is kinda like a last gen dv7, only with a better GPU, a backlit keyboard, a better screen, and dual band wi-fi. No fingerprint reader...but I've never used the fingerprint reader on my dv6 anyway.

One quick question. What brand/model are the HDD's? Or better yet, how much memory cache they have? The 640GB 7200rpm HDD I have has 16mb...I'm curious to know if they did the same for the 500GB models (I would assume so with 7200rpm). But it may not matter....since with the money saved...I could eventually venture into an SSD....being that the 2nd caddy is already there.

This is the model I actually ordered, shoud be at my doorstep by the end of the week.

    One question I have though:

Since it comes with 6gb RAM, does this mean that If I wanted to upgrade to 8gb, I would need to buy a 2gb stick and just add it in to the other slot ? (assuming it is empty)

    Or am I better off buying 2 x 4gb ?

    Thanks everyone -

The motherboard only has two slots...so you are going to have to go 2 x 4gb. Mind you...whether 1333 or 1600 MHZ memory...you are only going to find CAS9 memory. My suggestion is go 1333. The 1600 is only going to give you headroom for overclocking...which you can't do on a laptop...

Thanks for your input guys, but I am still a little blurry on this. If it comes BY DEFAULT, with 6gb, does that mean that it comes with a 2gb chip and 4gb chip ?

If this is the case, couldn't I just change the 2gb chip for a 4gb chip ?

Correct... a 2GB and a 4gb chip. All 1333 mhz DDR3 is CAS9. If you can run HWinfo32, it will give you the brand of the memory if you want to pick up another 4 GB stick of the same brand...OR...just know...keep it CAS9 and you should be good

And just to confirm, can I change my default 2gb stick for this one ? Just trying to avoid buying 2 x 4gb so I can save a few bucks. Thanks again everyone..

How do you insert an image of a web page?

I got the 2070NR WITH a 4 year Care pack with House Call and ADP priced down to $1587.98 plus tax. ($1,672.35 shipped)

(I had to play with the system quite a bit and load stuff in a certain order....but the price of the care pack is down to $237.99 after EPP, instant rebate, and dealigg coupon).

The only problem is that I probably won't be able to use most of these discounts because I'll have to call in my order and use a $500 off credit. But if anyone else is out there looking......it can be done.

Best way to do it, panthermark is to use the "Print scr~" button, head over to paint and paste. It will paste a snapshot of your desktop. From there you can always crop out the picture to show the total or whatever. BE SURE TO HIDE PERSONAL INFORMATION LIKE ORDER NUMBERS ADDRESSES NAMES ETC.

From there you can upload that image you edit on paint and upload it to imageshack, photobucket, etc.

I have a bunch of print screens on Word (or PDF) as usually hit ctrl + prnt screen (since I use two monitors) to create them. But I get lost on uploading the images since they are not in jpeg. (Maybe Flickr does not work with pdf's).

I can't get to imageshack from work, and my job still rocks Explorer 6...so photobuck does not look right.

I'll try it when I get home....

But for anyone looking....the key is log on the your EPP first....then order a 2090, then add on the carepack for the 2090. Go to check out, and SAVE BOTH FOR RE-ORDER.

    Remove both from your cart...

Go back and order the 2070, and go to check out. At that point, click on the saved carepack from the 2090 order and add it to your cart.

You will now get that care pack at the lower price.

Go to check out, and add the "dealigg30" coupon code for an additional $30 off of the carepack.

After all discounts, it is $1349.99 for the 2070NR and $237.99 for the carepack.

$1,587.98 plus tax is the total.

The dealigg coupon won't work with the EPP on the 2070NR by itself (yeah, I tried as well).

But it will work on the 4 year carepack. (see above post).

You could re-order and RMA the one on the way...or try to call HP and work something out...but I don't know how they fell about gaming the system.

    BTW..

I just ordered up a DV7, added the 3 year full carepack (with housecall and ADP) for a total of $153.19 (after dealigg30)....and followed the same steps

Final price on a 2070NR and a full 3 year care pack. $1503.18 plus tax.

I'm now curious to see how cheap I can get this thing.....
But it does look like at a certain point, the carepacks start applying to the Pavilions only..

aays06, you may very well have gotten the sweetest deal of all. :p ;)

The numbers get fuzzy already...but I would say with all the discounts/coupons/etc...I am paying about $1,880 to $1,900. So...close to a $1,000 off give or take a few buck. Not bad. :)

Having problem playing blue ray thru Hdmi on envy17 sb in conjunction with several year old Sony Bravia high def LCD . Multiple blue ray discs confirmed to play fine at another family members house thru envy 173d SB to a Sharp high def LCD. Get an error message - something to do with copyright or comptability on my Sony. Did not have this problem with prior gen, non SB envy 17. The HP media smart software at that time had no compatability issues with my Sony high def tv. Software on new SB envy is different and seemingly incompatible. So issue is not a functional, or connectivity, problem with any of the LCD's, the envy, etc. Seems like software comparability issue. Tried to download old HP media smart software for new machine using old model number. It would not load.

Anyone have ideas as to alternative software that may more universally play blueray DVD on most external monitors without error message?

But you have the ssd combo correct? Lucky you. I couldn't pay hp for that SSd, too much. But I also know you got a killer deal on it? All is well. Anyways my 3yr accidental warranty 2yr printer warranty, my printer, and 320gb external hard drive arrived today. Now just waiting on my envy.
