Have you tried adjusting the audio property sliders in the Beats Audio EQ (believe you have to push the button on top of the Beats dial to open). Here's a post in the HP forums that explored the settings in a little more detail: Beats Audio EQ Setting/ General Sound Advice - HP Support Forum . Haven't got mine yet, it's up in Anchorage at the FedEx Facility, so won't be able to check it out till Thursday of next week.

Was browsing Newegg today and decided on getting Intels 520 SSD to put in bay 1 and moving the hybrid 7200 to the second bay whenever i order my envy. I don't think i'll bother buying a caddy for the SSD sounds like some padding and tape is working just fine for some people. I chose Intel over OCZ because of brand recognition/loyalty and the SandForce chip too. I should think that 180Gb is sufficient too. Link below, a good choice of SSD?
Newegg.com - Intel 520 Series Cherryville SSDSC2CW180A3K5 2.5" 180GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) -
Anybody got some advice on my sound probs!?
-
Hey I got a sandisk 120gb SSD and am wondering can I use the bracket from one of my internal hard drives for the ssd? And make the hdd external via enclosure?
Jstr, I was reading up on some ssds. It came down to ocz intel and sandisk for me. I liked the ocz because it was fast and cheaper then the intel but it wasn't reliable so I've heard. The intel in well known but it's about 40 more expensive and from what I saw( being new to ssd ) the intel wasnt too fast but defiantly not bad at all. I went with sandisk cause it was on sale 120 for a 120gb and it had good reviews and was faster than the intel. Only down side is that sandisks warranty is only 3yrs compared to intels 5yr. -
Yeah i'm choosing Intel over OCZ because of all the Intel components that are already in the computer (processor, chipset, wireless COMM card) and also the confidence that Intel has put into this 520 series with their 5 year warranty. I know as a fact that Intel uses high quality silicon and chips in their products.
On another note, for some reason i'm thinking that the non-3D version has built in IR for 3D glasses too? (Stupid question/thought i know...) -
Anyone else have a problem with their Envy 17 not powering on?
I left the notebook on this morning, when I returned home the notebook was off & now I can't get it to turn back on.
HP tech support is so useless.
They ask me to remove the battery and then hold down the power button for 10 seconds & put the battery back in!
This is a nightmare! HELP -
When you power the machine on, does anything happen? Is it totally dead?
When you normally boot up...you would turn on...should see the cap lock button blink once then start the bootup sequence. If you don't have any of that...possibility that motherboard could be the issue. Also...when the PSU is plugged into the side...is the power light green? What happens when you put the battery in and turn on?
Lots of questions. What the technician did was to have you drain the capacitors on the Motherboard before attempting to power up again. Next time, ask the tech to help you clear the bios settings with two key strokes (don't remember them) and see if it will turn on.
Have you updated your bios lately? Anything that might lead to this? -
Anyone know of a way to stop the CDROM drive from making that loud noise when the laptop comes out of sleep?
I'm finding it ridiculously annoying
someone on youtube posted the same thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9bzLSjVo0k -
That is the drive engaging. Unfortunately the only way t make the sound stop is to remove the drive. All three generations of the Envy make that sound. Think of it this way...when you boot up a desktop...the bios engages the drives as the machine boots up and checks all the hardware. On desktop machine, you see the drive lights flash. Here, it makes the sound
-
Thanks for the reply Bobmitch.
Tech asked me to send the laptop in for repair.
I have not updated the bios or any other drivers.
My computer was working fine yesterday morning. I left it on, went out to get some lunch, came back and the laptop was off, would not restart, totally dead.
I tested the power adapter with a volt meter & I'm getting 19 volts, so thats seems to be ok. When I plug the power into the laptop the little led on the side does not light up. Tech also asked me to unplug the power & hold down the power button & beats button for 15 seconds, then plug power & try to power on, but nothing again, completely dead.
I've only had the unit for 3 months & everything was working perfectly, was very happy up untill now. Perhaps the system board is faulty. I feel as though I got a lemon. Hopefully they will fix it without messing something else up. The weird thing is that I told the tech I will not send the unit in with the original hard drive because all my work files & personal info is still on the drive. He told me they can not service the laptop without the factory drive & perhaps they would need to reformat the hard drive & they would only back up certain files. I said the problem is not the hard drive, it's a power issue. I'm sure they would have a spare hard drive for testing purposes! So after going back & forth, I decided to order a brand new hard drive to ship with the laptop. Another $80! -
Odd that the PSU doesn't light the little light up. My Envy (2nd Gen) is plugged in right now and off and there is a little green light that shows that there is power to the machine. Does your machine turn on with battery???
I always hate when they give hassles over the hard drive. I keep a "clone" of my SSD on a hard drive. This way, if they wipe my drive...I can clone it back. Unfortunately for you, it is too late to do that, unless you have two external enclosures and Acronis True Image 2011 or 2012...You can do the clone on a third machine with the two HDD"s in external enclosures...Another thought. If you have TWO of something like these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812123312
You wouldn't need the enclosures -
Yeah, but the drive doesn't engage during boot. Only coming out of Sleep.
-
Thanks for the link.
I should have been more clear about my laptop, it doesn't turn on at all, battery or power adapter it's completely dead, no sound or fans.
I ended up buying this yesterday:
Newegg.com - Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure - Model NST-210S2-BK
When they repair the laptop & send it back, I'll remove the new hard drive and put it in the enclosure & turn it into portable storage or just turn it into a clone.
Thanks again. -
Just curious, but wouldn't using a USB 3.0 HDD/SSD enclosure give you better transfer rates when you clone the drive? Granted they do cost a little more money than the USB 2.0 enclosures. My Envy 17 is on the FedEx truck "out for delivery" today, so expecting mine by 5pm. However, do have a few "extras" to order (like an external enclosure and carry case), by the end of the week.
-
I'm sure USB 3.0 would be the best way to go. I just ordered the cheapest enclosure I came across. I should have paid attention to what I was ordering, I would rather have 3.0
Good luck with your new Envy 17. I was really, really, very happy with mine, until the laptop died on me. Hopefully I'll get it back from repair in 4-5 days.
Oh well, I guess these things happen. -
Mine was just delivered about an hour ago. To sum in up in one word "AWESOME". Ordered the Alienware M17x messenger bag/carry case from B&H Photo (they had the best price I could find - $59.56 + shipping). Didn't want a backpack to lug my Envy17 around in, and this carry case seems to have good build quality and plenty of good reviews. I'll tackle the backup/cloning solution next month...via newegg.com of course.

I just received my hp envy 17 and i decided to test out the graphics
it shut off because of overheating while playing starcraft.....
it also says it does not have the recommended specs for diablo iii when i run a system check on systemrequirementslab.com
anyone else experience a shut down due to overheating while playing a game?
im pretty disappointed with the performance of this machine... -
When playing Starcraft I found it best to run on the lowest graphics possible. It can run high on 1v1 but once both players max units frame rate drops and it gets hot. At least that what my 2xxx did. D3 should run it on ultra with no problems so I've heard. I get mine 3xxx thurs but I'll be running it off my ssd. I don't know if that will effect the profomance or not.
-
i hope it runs d3 at ultra in the later acts with massive amounts of monsters with 4 players..
i bought the envy mostly for the aesthetics but it would be great if it runs d3 on ultra without any overheating -
Absolutely! If you intend to clone your HDD to SSD. Get a USB 3.0 enclosure and use it...However, only Acronis True Image 2012 will give you the fastest transfer rates during cloning. It has the newest drivers for USB 3.0.
-
Hopefully it won't...
Any good messenger bag brands you would recommend, I want something stylish yet simple.
I was looking at a enclosure with USB 3.0. I think it's like 25 bucks. Also I don't want something I have to plug into an outlet as well as my CPU. -
I currently use Acronis True Image 2010 on my PC, but only use it to clone the main Hard Drive. Likely will do the same on the laptop, but I will be cloning a 300GB SSD to another 300GB SSD in the USB 3.0 Enclosure.

No 17" Envy with Ivy Bridge...
Design: Not as elegant as our (3xxx) Sandy Bridge Envys
Conclusion: The 3xxx rocks some more months

is it possible to turn the 17 into a hackintosh?
-
bahahahahahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats what people get for waiting. wait moar! -
I contacted HP because of the fast-typing-keyboard-problem. They just confirmed it.
The German word "das" is annoying. If you type it fast (like the 123 problem), the notebook types "da6s". And it's an often used word.
Hopefully they will fix it. -
Hi,
I have a probleme with the speakers and I can't resolve it.
When I increase the volume of 50%, the laptop starts to sizzle, vibrate.
Over 50% it's impossible to have a clear sound even with flac songs.
What sould I do ?
Thanks -

Made an account to post this.
Here are some things I wish I knew before I bought this laptop (ENVY 17 3D)... I might end up returning it...
Note that this is not a complete review, just a list of things that I didn't know about that I would have taken into consideration before purchasing it, had I known.
I also submitted this review to the HP website.
1. You CAN NOT turn off hyperthreading. You can change the time in the bios, and that's about the only bios setting you can change. This is the main reason why I'm thinking about returning it. If I had known this before-hand, I wouldn't have gotten this lapotop. My father's elitebook does have the option to turn off hyperthreading--I am envious (chuckle)... why, HP? why...
2. The processor (2760qm) does not like to turbo boost. I have never seen it at it's rated 3.5ghz; 3.4 is the highest I've seen it go--and it wont stay there for long.
3. There is no turbo boost while the laptop is running on battery. There is no setting to change this.
4. The fan runs constantly, no matter what. Unless it's been sitting for an hour with all the powersaving options turned on.
5. CPU-Z reports that my memory is made by "Hyundai Electronics". It's running at 1600mhz, clocks: 11-11-11-28-1T. (I went with the 8gb 1600mhz option).
6. The recovery CD doesn't work with SSDs. I ended up copying the OS partition from the factory hard-drive onto my SSD, then used a retail version of windows to repair the copied partition so it would boot.
7. After all that, decided to do a clean install of windows anyways; there were 80+ processes running at startup--most of which taskmanager wouldn't list. Of course, I lost all my bells and whistles, e.g. proximity sensor, 3D, beats button, hard drive drop protection, etc.
8. The screen is VERY GLOSSY and reflective.
Here is a Screenshot of CPU-Z and GPU-Z -
I just bought an iPad and for some reason the Envy isn't charging it via USB. I know the ipad requires more power but I am sure I read that the Envy and newer laptops could charge it. Does anyone have any info?
-
Why does that bother you? Is there a disadvantage of using hyperthreading?
Hope they will give you a hint on that. It's annoying.
I don't have 3D on my Envy, but I got everything else to work (except a working equalizer in beats). Even the proximity sensor and HDD protection. I didn't even install anything for HDD protection?! Isn't it the HDD light changing to "orange" when lmoving the Envy? -
Got my 3D 3xxx a day earlier then expected last week and every thing checks out fine. 15 second boot time after the push of the power button from my sandisk extreme ssd(no GUI). Everything works great and unlike my 2xxx, its all crafted correctly no mistakes or issues with the build.
Thats weird, i just used acronis and it cloned my OS and all drivers to my ssd -
Try the USB port on the left side with the icon of a Thunderbolt... Gives more power and continues to charge when laptop is off.

Hello everyone. I'm proud owner of hp envy 17 3D. I just reinstalled it from home premium (serial key and activation stored securely) and installed Windows 7 Professional LEGAL. After that I reinstalled all drivers, and it seems that everything is working properly for me (Cool sense, beats audio, support assistant, quick launch, proximity, AMD drivers 12.3).
My question is that when I press f2 or f3 (change brightness) it shows increasing or decreasing brightness but display brightness is same. Can somebody help me? Thanks -
Hi I just received my new Envy 17 on 4/20/12 and I love it but I'm hearing all these news about Intel's Ivy Bridge plus what AMD just announced the New 7900m GPUS. I wanted to know what should I do I mean I really like my Envy but this is too damn tempting. I have I guess until May 11 to make the decision on returning it but I really would like some input. Better Graphics than my 7690m XT and probably way better Battery Life. Plus do you think they will be priced around the same...
-
^^ im in the same boat =/ except i have until may 8th
-
Anyone?
And I have 2 more question.
How to get cyberlink 12 to recognise 3D? Do I have to install original drivers or 12.3? I installed 12.3
And why 3d disk guard is not parking my disk? There is green mark, but if I shake laptop to test it out, it does not park disk.
I reinstalled windows 7 to professional legal, and installed all drivers from drivers page and from HP support.
Thanks in advance for responding. -
Ivy Bridges battery consumption isn't that much better. When idling, Sandy Bridge was even 1W less
But the Graphics seem to be more impressive. (
Intels Core i7-3770K im Test: Grafik von Ivy Bridge beeindruckt, CPU-Verbesserungen nicht - Golem.de for some Germans
)
-
Your drivers are not the issue. You need to set up Cyberlink 12 to know your machine does 3D (I am assuming that you have Envy 17 3D). Open Cyberlink PowerDVD 12 Ultra (again an assumption...since only Ultra does 3D)
At the bottom...you have your video controls. to the right...you see 3D and a small dropdown next to it. Click the dropdown box...you have 3D display configuration. Leave general and source format alone. Click on Display device...Instead of Auto detect...choose 120 HZ Time-Sequential LCD and click OK. Now run your mouse over the 3D...if it says enable...click it. Now you can view movies in 3D with your 3D glasses on. Took me awhile to figure these settings out.
You should be able to watch DVD and Blu Ray both in 3D with PowerDVD12 Ultra. I upgraded and love the new version -
The Ivy Bridge chip contains Intel HD 4000, which is Direct X 11. Sandy Bridge chips have an older video processor built in that does Direct X 10. That is one advantage...but why would you want to game on the Intel chip, when you have a discrete AMD chip with a lot more power...
Overall...Ivy Bridge is a wash, except TWO things and depending on the chipset on your motherboard...you won't see either advantage. With the H and Z77 chipsets...you get PCIE 3.0 and native USB 3.0. Ivy Bridge processors on the 67 chipset motherboards, will still require an add on port for USB 3.0. First, second and even third generation Envy's have Reneasus USB 3.0 ports. On proper motherboard, it will be Intel, as your USB 2.0 ports are. If one chooses Ivy Bridge and the current Envy motherboard, you are not getting some of IB features. Wait until HP and other vendors add the H77 chipset...that is when IB becomes a better acquisition -
Thanks mate, that was the problem, now 3D is working perfectly. Thank you very much.
One more question, do someone knows why brightness buttons are not working? There is animation of increasing or decreasing brightness, but brightness is the same? Thanks in advance -
Fully agree, that was my unwritten conclusion
The only advantage I see with a disabled discrete graphics is, that the left fan would be quiet. That's where the AMD card is located in our 17-3xxx. If you turn it off, then the fan is off, too.
For me, there is no need for an Ivy Bridge 17" Envy. -
Hi all, I have three problems and will someone try to help me.
My problem is that brightness buttons (f2 and f3) are not working. There is animation of increasing or decreasing brightness, but true level is same. How can I fix this? What driver I have to install/reinstall?
My other question is why my screen is sometimes black when turning on? (I think that it's problem with switching grapichs?) My 3D playback is working good.
And my final question (least important) why when waking up from sleep backlight of keyboard is off? Until I press backlight key they light up and turn off. And when I press them again they work as they should.
I reinstalled Envy 17 3D third generation to windows professional. Installed all drivers from HP and from drivers from here.
Please help me and thanks in advance. -
I bought an envy 17 3D in March for my work and everyday computer. I maxed it out and had 33% off coupon, so it was 2375 (included MS office professional, 16 GB RAM , 1.05T hard drive with 300SSD, i7-2860QM.
I have another computer I use to manage all my music (20,000 plus songs) that is about 7 years old, so I ordered an Envy 17 i5, 8GB RAM with 300 SD for 1450. there is now a 30% off coupon, and they gave me another $50 off when I ordered it.
The ENVY 17 3D is the best computer I have ever had. Fast at everything. Solid build quality. Hope this second one is just as good! The i5 should be good enough for my itunes library and the other things I do for managing my music. I scanned all my CDs and now only purchase digital, sol I like to have a separate computer for the music. I purchased 4 of the HP wireless adapters and they work well on current envy, and the music streams very well. I have a combination of wired and wireless all over the house, and the hp wireless adapters will allow me to use it all wirelessly from the computer. I do not do email, or anything else but music on the second laptop, so want to keep it free of everything else. -
You really need to decide what it is you need. I purchased in march my 3D, and just ordered another 17 with i5. These computers are enough for my needs, and they were 33% (the one I just ordered was 30% but they gave me another $50 off). I doubt the ivy bridge will be discounted as much for a while. If you think the performance will be noticeable for you and you would take advantage of the newer chip, then go for it. I hear so many mixed reviews about who would really notice the difference, and what types of games/programs running would really show the difference. The same thing happened when Sandy Bridge was released, especially with comparisons of 2 or 4 cores. I bet the 3D i7 2.5 2869QM is too much processor for what I do on my work computer, but it's a keeper. The i5 I ordered for my music management laptop will be enough. Everyone has to try to sell everyone on the latest and greatest, but how many really take advantage of all the features and performance available?
-
I really get what you said and I am happy with the Envy 17 I purchased. I've never had any Intel core i3, i5, i7 processor. So this is a big step for me going to a second gen quad core i7. This is the most money I've ever spent on a single item and I just want to make sure this will be my computer for the next 4-5 years. I just hear the new ivy Bridge and the new AMD 7900m series are really worth it. I'm not one of those Apple people that need the new iPhone or iPad or Macbook Pro every year. I studied this laptop for months, read tons of reviews and made my choice that this will be my laptop for the next 4-5 years. I think I will just stay with my Envy 17 and If it come's time that the new Envy versions are better in every way, I can just sell this one thanks...
-
^100% agree with this. Haven't bought mine yet, but it will be more money than i spend on my car (only need to get from A to B). I too have followed the Envy series for what seems like forever - since the first generation was announced! I can't count how many reviews i've read, but with the build quality, and reputation of the hardware manufacturers this laptop will last me well into 2014 and beyond (hopefully lol).
All this coming from a guy with a 3 year old HP G60, powered by a dual-core Athlon X2 QL-62. -_- The Envy 17 3D will be a serious full-court long shot from what i'm running now. -
Did you not save and install from your SwSetup folder as is advised countless times in this forum?
-
Looks as though your HP On screen display is working. Now make sure that your quick launch software isn't borked! Can you raise / lower sound volume with your hotkeys?
