How does the radiance screen stack up to the version on the sony vaio z, not resolution wise, but quality wise. Which has better color, which is brighter? which is X-Z?
I remember a post from one guy that had a side by side shot of the vaio z next to an mx11, and the difference in color saturation was much better on the vaoi, wish I could find that post on this forum, forgot where it was.

16 Days!~~~~~~

Well, the Vaio does have an excellent screen, but to be fair, I've heard a lot of people say the m11x's display was not good.
We won't know exactly how good the screen is until the notebook comes out, but considering it is one of the biggest touted features, it should be pretty good. -
Hopeful Envy 14 owners can rely on the past and future for what to expect. Lets hope HP makes a better product than the Envy 15. The new Envy 17 looks nice so far, and has improvements from the Envy 15 that Im hopeful will reach the Envy 14.
HP Envy 17 Intel i5 is said to include Super Speed USB 3.0
The user "metril" posted: Both i5 and i7 versions have USB 3.0(6/9/2010 @ 03:01 PM).
The user "yukstin" posted: I have the i5 540M and it does have the USB 3.0 port (6/9/2010 @ 03:14 PM).
It looks as the Envy 17's new hinge design has far more adjustability than the Envy 15.
The user "yukstin" posted: Here is a picture of side the laptop with the screen as far back as it can go.
(6/10/2010 @ 09:46 AM), with a photo.
Im excited to see these specific types of design growth over the Envy 15, and look forward to seeing more changes for a better Envy 14. Whats HP waiting for.... the best for last I hope! -
nevermind, I found the post, I remembered it as it was so striking and damning to those who want better screens.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...o-z-i5-comparison-benchmarks.html#post6030524 -
I remember reading a piece on the original preview of the Envy 14 where the reporter said something like "At first I thought HP had cheated and superimposed a photograph overtop the screen to make it look more vibrant. After toying with it, I realized that the screen was just that awesome."
-
If that's true, that is so cool.
-
I've heard alot about laptop test drives, but how does it work? Do you have to pay for the send-back?
-
I'm just curious about the Envy making it to Canada. How much longer will it take, how much more will it cost, will we be seeing these generous coupons too and will we be able to customize them from HP Direct.
Also, if anyone knows, do you get a receipt as soon as you buy the laptop or do they ship it to you in the box? Do they put your name on the receipt? It sounds like a weird question but I'm buying this on student loans and your name needs to be on the receipt and I need to have that receipt in my hands before the beginning of August. (The jerks are auditing me, 50 days left to make the purchase) -
I assume they will Email you your receipt, I can't imagine them actually mailing you one...
-
Yeah, this 14 is not even out yet and I am already turning into a sort of evangelist for it. Hopefully I am not leading people astray.
I will make this pronouncement about it now though.
The hp envy 14 may well be the Buick Lacrosse of the laptop world. The name is not as flashy as the likes of alienware or apple mbp, just as the redesigned Lacrosse with that tainted Buick moniker does not have the name id of a Lexus or a bmw, but for the money, it is at or near the top of the pack. If sales are not in the same league, it will NOT be the fault of the product. -
If Canada didn't have to wait for 6+ months for new Envys (we don't even have the 2nd gen Envy 15, never mind the 17) I would be all over this, because of this I think I maybe turning to the dark side and getting a macbook pro.
-
You can't get one in the US/ Get one shipped from the US/ have someone ship you one from the US?
-
Oh noes!
Just curious, how much is the MBP 15 in Canada? -
I sure hope this is available with i5-540m or i7-620m!
-
Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the states that well else this would be a none issue, also not sure how the warranty would work since the envy 14 is not being sold yet in Canada, would they still honor the warranty?
As for the macbook pro, I would be going for the 13 inch, I know it does not have near the sheer power as the envy, but it has enough power to support my casual gaming through win7/bootcamp (have my 360 for everything else), is a bit more portable (important to me as a university student, tired of lugging around my old compaq brick) and has pretty awesome battery life under OS X for featuring a full C2D processor. Plus I would get a free itouch through the student deal on right now, so another toy to play around with
I think I have a 14 day trial period after I buy one so I will give it a whirl and see if it will work for me.
-
Doubt you'll be disappointed. MBP 13's total carrying weight is 5 pounds as the AC adapter is only 1/2 pound. The Envy 14 will most likely come out to more than 6 pounds. I'd guess about 5.25+1.5=6.75 pounds roughly? At that weight, I'm carrying it inside my backpack. It's a sacrifice I'll make for a notebook with a kickass screen, backlit keyboard, super solid build construction, and being able to run my Win7 programs natively. If I get into my wait-listed school, I'm most definitely rewarding myself with an SSD.

almost two weeks...
I need a project of sorts to keep me distracted.
EDIT: oh yeah, I did just start summer online classes, I suppose that counts, haha... -
I personally have a fairly long book list to finish before school starts. Completely optional, but I'm so damn lazy!

hey look at this the Envy 17 keyboard and the material holding the keys is pretty weak.. lets hope that because its big and when it comes to the 14 its will be more durable... plus you gotta be typing quite hard to notice and the dude is putting some force down on his finger:
YouTube - HP Envy 17 keyboard flex -
Time to break out the double sided tape.
Bronsky
-
lol... definitely ha!!
-
It probably won't be much different for the 14.
Anyone have any idea of how this might figure into hardware reliability months or years down the road?
Makes me worry a bit.
-
the flex doesn't seem to bad.
but i notice that hp kinda cheaped out on the keyboard, build wise.
seems like the new envys, 14/17, have a keyboard tray. Its probably made of plastic. im not sure
compare to the old envys, 13/15, the keyboard dose not have a plastic tray but instead the Aluminum Chassis is cut for each key of the keyboard.
guess its a trade off for the backlight keyboard.
i dont really mind -
I rather have the plastic tray, at least it'll be water spilling proof unlike aluminium cut
And I don't know about you but I like when the keyboard has a little flex, it makes it bouncy.
Update on the usb 3.0 :
Apparently even 7200 rmp hard drives don't max out the e-sata yet... So basically usb 3.0 is useless for storage unless your external storage is a SSD or a 10.000 rpm + hard drive.
In the end usb 3.0 or not on the 14 wouldn't matter much then.
Anyway I want that frigging envy for its radiance screen, because the only screens good enough to display radiography properly are those of the mbp... I hope radiance is really as good or better than mbp's display as it pretends to be. Anyone found a review of the envy17 screen ? or comparison to other screens ? -
keep in mind though when a review of the 17 comes out that its screen wont be as good as the 14's due to it not being a radiance infinity screen just an infinity screen. Hopefully the 14's screen with prove worthy for that you need it for.

Envy 14 can now be ordered on the german HP Site. It says delivery within 4 weeks
HP ENVY 14-1010eg Notebook-PC (WN945EA) Spezifikationen - HP Privatanwender Produkte
However, no configuration possible until now which sucks, cause I really want an SSD and rather downgrade the cpu.
Calling the HP Support for further information. -
So it's confirmed at least in Germany. 1,299 Euros gets you:
Intel® Core™ i5-520M Prozessor
1600 x 900 HD+ High-Definition LED HP Radiance Infinity Display
4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2048 MB)
500 GB
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650
Damn. That's a good sign for us Americans! I know specs & prices COULD differ, but it still makes a decent price signal. In a hypothetical situation in which this combo is valued at $1,299, 25% bcb or $300-450 coupon would make this a sexy buy. I'd totally downgrade to 320gb and an i5-430M if it meant considerable cost savings as I plan to toss in a warranty.
Thanks for posting!
Based on historical European Envy 13/15/17 pricing, does anyone have any theories as to how much this puppy will go for in the US? -
So hard to make a purchase from big company these days.
No early custom configuation, large price dispreancy at different countries, incompetent sales/CSR ....
But when can we buy one ? We don't want to wait anymore !
-
Try comparing current Europe 17 price with US 17 price ?
-
Dunno, was hoping for a quick ballpark figure as I can't easily read another language aside from English.
-
Yes we already know that since monday.
Seems like you haven't read all of this thread
Someone even mentioned a german coupon code for a 5% discount, which still seems to work.
HPDE5PTHX1
I don't think that it will be possible to get a different configuration in Germany. HP offers the individual configuration for all Envys only in USA and nowhere else worldwide.
Hint: Do it yourself
Get a SSD and an external 2,5" drive chassis for the 500GB HDD or sell it. -

I just ordered my HP Envy 14-1010eg Notebook-PC (WN945EA) here in Germany with the HP Store by phone.
For today they have a preorder discount of 11% today that amounts to 1156€.
This is even cheaper than student discount with welcome discount of 25€.
Delivery time was quoted as 17 days or probably still in June.
Hope I will get it as soon as they promise...
Again, the model is a:

1 Euro = 1.2114 U.S. dollars
equates €1299.00 to $1573.61 -
Damn... HP called me back.
The 11% Discount was not redeemable for the Envy Notebook.
This way its 1234€ again..
What a dissappointment.. Its just 80€ more, not much of the overall price, but still.. -
Dang...hopefully they will have some other form of a release deal.
(I like your username, btw. He's my hero.)
-
You've also got to account for the socialism tax there in Germany...iirc when I looked it up it more or less mitigated the conversion factor making it essentially 1:1. Don't quote me on that.
-
Starting price for Envy 17 in Norway right now is 9995 NOK, which amounts to $1536, which is about 10% more than the US price of $1399. In my experience, this is unusually low, esp. considering there is 25% VAT included in those 9995 NOK.
-
The tax is 19% in Germany.
So with tax: Euro 1299 = $1573,61
and without tax: Euro 1091,60 = $1322,36
The 1:1 rule is really a good approximation. -
USA has tax too...about 8% where I am. So that would make it roughly 1:1.1
Nonetheless, not a significant difference. -
I'm not sure why everyone is freaking out about the price, the HP dude said it was start at 999 lol
-
The difference is only in the viewpoint.ChemE said: ↑USA has tax too...about 8% where I am. So that would make it roughly 1:1.1

In Germany every online shop only shows prices including tax.
It seems that in the US every online shop shows prices only without tax, because the tax could differ depending on the state you are living in.
Many germans read a price in an online US shop and think "wow thats cheap" not realizing that you have to add tax to compare it with german shop prices. The same way a US citizen reading the price in a german shop thinks "wow expensive", because he adds his own tax on top of the already included higher tax.
But he didn't say what you exactly get for that moneythe HP dude said it was start at 999Click to expand...

you get a 1366x768 screen with a 320 gig hdd and an i3.

*shrugs* or we could be lucky and get the big screen and an i5 with that price -
Ah, 'gotcha StefanHT.
There's a lot of speculation...I was under the impression that it'd be an i5 with 500gb hdd, 4 gb ram. Oh well..we'll see soon enough. -

I am really wavering what I should do..
When I heard that 150€ discount, I immediately wanted to buy it, but now that the discount isnt that high, it feels different again.
Fortunately now I have a reservation for one of the machines of the first shipment. So, I still have a few days to reconsider..
Anyways, sounds better than you guys in the states, you cant even order yet.. -
erathostenes, what specs have you been given for your pre-order?erathostenes said: ↑I am really wavering what I should do..
