You can't return gift cards from HP unless you're in an area where it's required by law.

That time frame may be cutting things close. I hope they can pull that off for you. Any other backup options in mind if they can't meet your deadline?

It basically does for me. I'm expecting a 2 week arrival time, but I'd like a little cushion in there just in case it takes a little longer. My current laptop won't handle the software that they're loading on it at orientation July 18.

The Dell XPS 16 (which would be about $1300 with 30% off coupon...8gb ram) or the HP dv6t which would be about the same for the same specs.

I hope it all works out with the envy..

Good luck to all who rush in to buy it on release day, may you have lots of savings :D

If there was a 25% BCB discount on the release date and a 21 day evaluation period, why would you not order one of these on the 27th?

I hope someone releases a OD HDD caddy. If it were blu-ray I'd keep it, but not DVD/CD, I'll take a 500gig drive along with my primary SSD.

And how difficult should it be? (I know HP was nice with their case design)

I don't think any envy 17 owners have really wanted to try it... especially since they can both have blu-ray odd and space for 2.5" drives rather than one or the other

I'm interested in the ODD -> SSD swap as well. I'm assuming that we'll be able to use any old 9.5mm caddy that is in the shape of an optical drive. It shouldn't cost more than $20 to get one.

Once we get our hands on the laptops we'll be able to figure out the best solution. I'm interested in either the 80GB X25-M or the OCZ Vertex 2 60GB. Either one should be a good drive.

While digging some price comparators I found for europeans that on the website
    PIXMANIA
Not on all countries but back in my homeland (france) which I am going back to this summer the envy is at 999€ (i450m 1600* radiance, 4gigs of ram 500gig hd 8cell bat).
If it doesnt come out in the US for 999$ with similar specs I am probably getting mine there since my brother can order one for me with a 70€ discount and there's currently a 25€ coupon for over 700€ orders on that website so in the end that's nearly 1100$ no more for radiance screen i450 config.
I'd be satisfied with that if early reviews shows the build quality is consistant on the whole line ^^

So are the SSDs that HP puts in these laptops Intel X25-Ms? That would be really cool if they supplied good drives for reasonable prices.

this is a good idea to take advantage of the 25% for fear that it may go away but this means you need to spend $1500 at HP now. additionally, if the envy14 is not to your liking, you will be restricted in your next laptop choice since you will have 1500 in HP gift cards

You can just get two 500$ gift cards for 750$...
And get a 1200$ envy, so in the end, even if 10% classic BCB is cancelled due to use of the gift card as an "additional coupon". You get the envy for like... 950$

    From bing support page.

Great deal in any aspects. If the gift card is considered as instant rebate... It's a ing great deal (makes that 1200$ envy at like 855$). And even if hits the fan, you can resell the two gift cards for 800 or even 900$ on ebay when bing is over. Someone will get them...

I'd like to get gift cards right now too bug I can't find the HP link that provides 25%, only a 10% one... Anyone knows where it is ?

Ya, I figured I could resell the gift cards. But the main deal is that I can get the 25% off from bing on the gift cards, then use 10% student discount when I use the gift cards. If bing doesn't pull through, I'll just have to wait for the $200 coupon.

Anyone know if the $200 coupon stacks with student discount?

So wait, did the BCB work on the giftcards? A few pages back, people were saying you couldn't use them on gift cards. If the BCB works, don't worry about using another BCB, just use coupon codes or student discounts and everything should be fine. At least I would hope so.

^ i'm still not sure, I asked bing and bing said ask hp. I asked hp and hp said yes they do work for gift cards but I've heard the customer service at hp are bad so they might just be bullting me.

As for the 25% bing cashback, make sure you're not using any adblocker. Use internet explorer, go to bing, search for hp direct, and it should be the first one.

I happen to have an old HP gift card lying around and it says "Home & Home Office" purchases only.

I logged into HP.com using my corporate discount, and on top, instead of saying "Home & Home Office", it says my "my_company_name HP Exclusive Offers". Granted, the laptops are still from the home section of HP, but it may be an issue.

I have an old gift card with no balance left so I wasn't able to test to see if the gift card will apply to the random laptop I added to my cart.

I was going to try this with my academic discount, to see what it says on top, but I forgot my login and password for that one.

Just make sure they can be stacked. I was amazed at how restrictive Dell was with their gift cards; no EPP, no Buisness class purchases, no other discounts, etc.

I may go ahead and do the same, now that someone has taken the plunge. Let us know when you get the BCB email.

I'd be really surprised if you couldn't stack gift cards. I mean, with graduation and everything it's very plausible that someone could get two gift cards from two different people and would want to use them for a single purchase..

I also asked them about multiple gift cards, they said I can stack them in one purchase. But i mean you can always get the $1500, its not like envy 14 is coming out this week anyways.

Also.. I've used bing before, usually takes 1-2 days before it shows up in my account.

I went with $1500 because I want the screen upgrade, ssd upgrade, and 540m upgrade. so with tax and everything, it'd be more than $1500

Did I miss something? Bing Cashback specifically said it isn't valid for gift cards. Reading some other posts at other forums (for other stores, i.e. walmart) the pending BCB sat in their account for 30-60 days and was eventually voided.

    YMMV says it all.

Here's just one of many. Just do a google for "Bing Gift Cards"

Walmart gives Bing cashback on gift card purchase?

Either way at Bing forums where I specifically asked they said NO. I guess that to me means NO.

edit: hmm, seems there's more debate over what's going on, maybe we will get good news yet!

Problem is you may not know for 30 to 60 days.

I'll bite if and when Bing says its ok. Not some third party website. It's not like I'm talking about a few bucks. I'm talking about $375! I'll do the $1500 as well because I'm going to get the 1600x900 screen, i5-520m (or 540m), slice battery, SSD (only if 25% BCB is applicable). If I decide I don't like the Envy I can always sell the gift cards on eBay for cheaper than face value and still make money.

Walmart gives Bing cashback on gift card purchase?

gives conflicting answers, the last post says that it did work for him.

Everybody keeps saying it specifically says in bing's term that you can't buy gift cards but I dont see it. The only thing it says about gift cards is that you are not allowed to USE gift cards with bing. Also, bing's shopping department offer gift cards with bing cashback so it wouldnt make sense if they don't allow it.

    I already posted it here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6379107-post2938.html

To repeat and summarize it says verbatim:

Your purchase might not be eligible for cashback for one of the following reasons:
    .
    .
You also used a separate discount or coupon, a gift card, or a gift certificate.
    .
    .

Using gift cards and buying gift cards are two very different things. Like I said earlier.

Actually, I'm pretty confident that it'll work. Most of the people I think that says it won't are confused with the two for some reason.

I have heard of it going both ways. I have a friend that used bcb on giftcards and he got the confirmation email but when the 60 days was up it was voided. He ed to someone and they told him that bcb doesnt honor gift cards and that it was written in the rules. I have seen people say that it does work but could these people just be going by the confirmation?
