Just because it's new doesn't mean it's fast enough to keep up with WPA. WPA is a lot more processor and RAM intensive than WEP, especially with multiple clients connected.

You click the little scale icon under idawhale's avatar on the post you want to give them rep for.

Well... since I changed it from WPA to WEP.. I've still been getting disconnected. It's just that I don't have to restart my modem and router anymore.. which is much better.

But I think what you said about the router being too old is true. Mine is about 3 years old now...

Which leads me to my next question...

The router I'm using is one of those that gives us a telephone line too. Is it possible to connect this router to a newer router thats connected to the modem ?

    so. (old router)<---->(new router)<---->(modem)

Do you get full stereo on your headphones when you use that 3.5mm Y-adapter? Also, do you notice any sound quality loss through your headphones (detail, volume, etc) when you have it connected to the adapter with the mic also connected, versus just having the headphones directly connected to the audio port w/o the adapter?

I'm trying to figure out if I can add an additional 1.8" SSD drive to my laptop as-is or do I need a new bracket and screws or anything like that. I'm trying to avoid having to take apart my laptop multiple times. I currently have a 500 GB drive in there but I'd like to utilize that drive for storage and use a new SSD for the OS. Has anyone done this already and what, if any, problems did you run into (BIOS settings, equipment, etc)? Below are my full laptop specs:

    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-820QM Processor
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830
    • 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
    • Webcam Only
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • USB 3.0

You can't just add a 1.8" drive. Your 500GB drive is a 2.5" drive and it takes up the whole bay. To get a 1.8" SSD you will have to buy one or two 1.8" drives and a new drive bracket. The biggest 1.8" spinning drive they make is only 320GB.

I am reinstalling windows 7 but this time im getting a error message when trying to install: "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash Drive, please insert it now"

after googling it seems people have solutions but not for laptops. They switch the hdd sata to achi or whatever theyre talking about.

have anyone had this problem with this specivid laptop?

The problem is not with the laptop, but it is with the external disc drive you're using, which it is old. I had the same problem, because the external drive is outdated doesn't have oem support for 64-bit drivers outside of windows. The best solution is to use unetbootin to load the disc into a usb flash drive and boot from that.

Hi I was wondering a few things about the envy 15 and wanted to get owners of the laptop's opinions on it:
Should I buy the envy 15 or wait for a refresh?
Is there any common problems associated with the 15?
Is there really a difference between the screens (regular vs brightview)?
Should I buy refurbished or used?
    Thanks!! :)

The Envy 15 is no longer being made, so I don't think a refresh is coming. There are a few common problems, but you can see those by checking through the thread here. Yes, there is a difference between the screens. Brightview is... well, bright. The normal is not as bright. But they're both good. And I'd go refurb over used.

I have weird problem with my envy 15. Every time I turn it on, the power on the left corner flashes yellow. The manual says it's because of low battery remaining, but that's defintely not the case for me because it flashes whether or not a battery is in.

Anyone have issues with the lid gap increasing? I swear the gap when I close my screen is increasing. The rubber bumpers still touch and the bezel/bumpers seem solid enough. I'm not sure what it is, but I am sure the gap has increased. It may also take less pressure to open it, not so sure about that. Perhaps, it's getting less pressure from the hinge when closed.

It's a small issue, no doubt. Driving me nuts :)

Any news from HP that the ENVY 15 will not be re-introduced? Seems like HP would bring the 15" back once the reported problems are resolved.

I think the Envy 15 will be back. When HP introduced the Envy 14 and 17, they only said they were discontinuing the Envy 13. So I'm looking forward to a refreshed 15 with sandy bridge.

I second that. I had to settle for a 14 because the 15 lost the i7 option, then it disappeared completely. The 15" 1920x1080 display is radiant enough for me.

Here is the info from the Envy 15 I'm currently using, shipped in april, ultra bright view 1080p. Note that hp has several variations of the ultra bright view p/n's that have shipped since then, my company has 5 E 15's and there are 3 different ID / P/N's for the displays (all LG), as far as we can tell the actual display and backlight are very close with only a slight difference in max brightness, they also seem to very close in color matching using the same icc profile created with Spyder3 calibration system.

    Monitor Name LG Philips LP156WF1-TLE2

    Monitor ID LGD0265

    Good luck.

    If it's a first generation Envy, it's a Radeon 4830. If it's a second gen, it's a 5830. There are no other options.

The only way you can know is if you look at the device manager and look at the hardware IDs.

If you can confirm it has an i5 CPU, it has a 5830 in it. If you can confirm it's 2nd Generation, it has a 5830. If you can't confirm either of those, there is nothing to visually distinguish them from outside the machine, nothing else you can do.

It is almost certainly a second gen Envy though. The first generation wasn't nearly as popular or widely sold.

i was wondering, what kind of gaming results does this laptop get at a 1600 by 900 res and what is the 3dmark06 people get with mid to high overclocks on the gpu. Also, i was wondering if this laptop ran hot at normal tasks and what the battery life was on the normal battery not with the slice and then the battery with the slice. would u recommend this laptop to me over the envy 14? i need a thin but powerful laptop so i can game high res like 900p and 1080p at medium settings and 30fps. but i also need a laptop that will have good battery life when i need it. most of the time it will be plugged in BUT i still need it for school and such

Yup, usually the only things that are modular(or replaceable) are the rams, CPU and HD.
