Hey guys, question. I have the 2nd gen Envy 15, i5 540, with 4gigs of RAM. I was wondering if someone could tell me how/what memory sticks I need to buy to upgrade to 8 gigs? Am I going to need to buy 2 4 gig sticks or do I stilll have empty slots to put 2 gig ram sticks in? I run speccy and it says that I have 2 free memory slots open, but i'm not sure if thats accurate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

All Envy 15's with Arrandale i5 CPUs run DDR3-1066 RAM and there should only be 2 slots for RAM on your board. If you bought yours directly from HP with 4GB, then likely it would've come with 2-2GB sticks. You will have to buy 2-4GB sticks to max it out to 8GB.

Try using CPU-Z and click on the SPD tab. There you'll see exactly how many slots are on the board and what type of RAM is in each slot.

This particular stick was recommended several times on this thread

    W1066SB4GS Super Talent DDR3-1066 SODIMM 4GB Samsung Chip Notebook Memory - DDR3 SODIMM 200 Pin - SuperBiiz.com

    Hope this helps!

Thanks! I downloaded CPU-Z, and clicked on the SPD tab. Under the menu 'Memory Slot Selection' there are 4 different slots I can choose from. Selecting slot 1 and 3 show that I have 2 gig DDR3 sticks installed. If i choose slot 2 and 4 in the menu, everything is blank. Does that mean I have empty slots there, or the program is thinking I have extra slots that don't exist?

And also thank you very much for the link to the RAM sticks.

With the i5 boards, Slots 2 and 4 are deactivated. In other terms, Slots 2 and 4 are not used. Therefore you got a dual core motherboard. RAM Slots has to pair up in either odd or even pairs. So the default duo slots for motherboards is often odd or 1/3. Even would come next with 2/4, for a 4 slotter.

I have faced a similar issue where sometimes my PC will reboot continuously after POST. The workaround I have is to press escape to bring up the HP system test menu and then press enter - this takes me to the normal boot sequence and everything works fine.

lol, i still have the 'old' 4830 which is still rather close to 5830 and 6830M

I see they have changed the specs on notebookcheck to
    575/900

Wonder if it's oc a bit higher than the 6830M.

They must of start using the 5850M-Grade Parts. Most 5830M's can't even hit 575 on the Core quite easily.

I think they can, not easily but possible.

We all know 4830/5830/6830M are all 40nm parts.
Mine max stable oc is around 575/1000
    5830M is around 600/1050

    So 6830M around 625/1100 (?)

But a 6770M seems to be stronger than a 6830M to me...

No such thing. There's a 6Gb/s SATA 3.0. And no, the Envy 15 doesn't support that. SATA 2.0 only.

No offense, but the 4830 is going to be a hard sell. Simply on the fact that those models weren't built well and had lots of problems. In addition, all i5's carry the superior 5830.

If you do want to sell, they will be often under 100-200 USD of the price of an used i5 2nd Gen.

I'm very tempted to purchase the HP Envy 15-1104tx for $1299AUD via eBay Australia which is a really good price. What do you guys & girls think....is it worth waiting for the Sandy Bridge processor which will be released in the coming months in the Envy 14/15 and pay the extra premium for new technology or just bite the bullet and purchase the HP Envy 15-1104tx which has some very nice specifications.

That's a great configuration for the price. Sandy Bridge will be faster of course, but you shouldn't be unhappy with the performance of that machine. It's not like you're buying something obsolete. Just something that isn't bleeding edge.

The only concern is that it's a quad-core chip. That translates into quite a bit of heat and low battery life. So, if either of those are concerns for you I would skip it.

Also, given how many issues there have been with Envys, make sure (double, triple-check) that you have an HP warranty for it. You don't want a problem with the machine that you can't fix.

No no, the purpose of modified INF's drivers for graphics card is to allow installation of desktop-drivers of the graphics card to be installed on the mobile version. Unlocking certain limitations set down by HP for the model.

Ummmm... I DON'T see a point. First off, the 5830M is not equivalent to a desktop 5830, so the advantages of some desktop-enhanced tools aren't going to favor the 5830M. 2nd if you want to overclock the sucker, GPU Clock Tool 9.26 gets the job done just as well. Also, note that the 5830M is specially-tailored to HP and HP locked the vBIOS down hard as rock within the Insyde BIOS. Any modded driver you attempt on it is insignificant than what the official mobility Catalyst offers. THe 5830M is not really the same your typical MXM-based 5800M card.

Also, I don't use modded drivers unless I need to unlock FirePros to Radeons. nVidia may be a different story as nVidia's mobility drivers don't enable overclocking anyways.

If you do want to try though you can, but I really don't know the modded inf code for it as I never bothered to check before I sold the laptop. However, I don't see the point in this for this particular GPU.

Which limitations would those be? The 5830 in the Envy 15 runs at the AMD specs, so it's not like HP is underclocking or anything.

I'm not sure what an inf would do other than possibly enable things like tesselation levels or whatnot. But it won't do anything directly for performance... there's nothing HP has done to the chip to limit it.

theres absolutely nothing wrong with amd gpu clock tool, works magic. its just that i want to change clocks on the fly with preset profiles and such. msi afterburner works great in that sense- but it wont let me downclock to 50/100 like i want it to ( i get temps of 38'C with that clock).

Ahhh crap, my 11 month old HP Envy 15 just died today. Has had a small grinding noise since I bought it. Just never had the time to go through the HP support process and then lose the laptop for 5 working days to have it fixed. Besides, it ran fine, so it went onto the list of things to do.

Anyway, today I was on the phone to the old man trying to fix up my VOIP phone, loaded up a Youtube video, just as it started the laptop froze with a loud constant noise from the speakers, then went to a blue screen with something along the lines of "dumping physical memory" with a percentage indicator, or something along those lines.

Then the screen went blank. Power light was still on, it would appear to be restarting, then would cut out before coming back on and constantly repeating this in a continuous loop.

Anyone got any ideas as to what happened?
