Can you post some pictures of the matte screen? Aside from the colors, does the matte screen show reflections in sunlight and overhead light sources?
-
It isn't a true matte, more like the Sony Z screens. Has slight glare but is def much better than a glossy lcd (aside from the quality).
-
For those that received the 2nd gen Envy, can you please confirm the software that was included?
I just saw Corel launched the X3 version of their software. Do we get a free upgrade?

You must have an original 4830 (first build). Mine built on 12/07 came clocked at 400Mhz core and 700Mhz mem DDR3, lost stability above 800Mhz. so on later builds this is an accurate score, but hey it ran a lot cooler
-
Thanks for that info! It does show that the new i5 screen options have changed. The big question is what are the changes? I am still evaluating but I don't think the anti glare is going to work for me, that being said, i really don't want to return it do to the great deal I got on it, plus the fact it shipped with Gen 2 intel SSD's.
Let us know if you can figure out which display is the best quality, for me higher color gamut would be a plus. I would not be opposed to spending some $$ for a much better quality display. -
I seems like what you're describing is a defective screen rather than issues native to a matte finish screen. My matte screen does not look "blurry" from even extreme angles nor does it have washed out colors. Granted it won't be quite as "vibrant" as a glossy screen, but it should not be as bad as you have described yours. Manufacturing errors do occur, and if they don't have the different polarizing layers of the screen aligned properly, the screen will suck.
You are better off to get your machine repaired (tell them to ship a new one out directly since yours was DOA) than to defraud HP by swapping a less expensive panel with a more expensive one and returning the "new" computer. -
Actually, no, it is originally 400/700 but I ran the 3Dmark06 bench using 550/800.
I think it is worth mentioning what clock speeds you ran the bench on then. -
So what util are ppl using to up the 5830 settings and what is a good, read semi safe, clock settings to use?
-
It came with X2, so you have to upgrade for $70.
-
Any pictures with the matte screen? Will get mine next Monday or Tuesday. Do they all look bluish? I suppose it looks like any other business laptop that with a matte screen, like Thinkpad T series, Dell Latitude E series.
I did not find any NEW envy unboxing videos on youtube. -
I use the ATI GPU Tool for the 5870 to overclock and monitor temps.
545/1100 are my maximum stable overclocks, id say then that 540/1090 would be 100% safe 24/7. Yours may be different... just use Furmark and let it run in the back as you up the clocks and when it freezes or artifacts just back it down... -
550/1000 stable here.
Haven't increased mem past that yet, though
-
Wow, I just got my Envy and I gotta say, you guys had me thinking I was gonna open it up, find dirt and scratches on it, it would squeak when I put my hand on the keyboard, my glossy screen would suck, the speakers would be distorted, it would run out of batteries as soon as I turned it on, it would melt my lap, the mouse pad wouldn't work, and that performance on battery would be slow as molasses....
Boy was I pleasantly surprised.
I have been following this thread for weeks and last night I actually had a dream that I opened the box and it was the crappiest laptop you can imagine with things hanging off and dirt etc.
I don't know whether to be mad at you guys for giving me nightmares, or thank you for making this laptop seem even more awesome when I opened it
This laptop is awesome! -
Glad to hear you have no issues.
That doesn't discount the fact that others have

I have two questions on clean install -
Can I restore the recovery partition (by creating a disk image)?
Do we need to have the recovery partition intact when we send it back to hp? -
Hi there,
I am doing my fresh install of Win7 (not the version provided with the laptop), and I cannot get the FN keys to work properly.
I know many of you made the clean install, so could you tell me where I can the right drivers/soft for those FN key functions?
Thx -
Just use the recovery media option in the start menu, which will create backup discs.
No, you don't need anything on the HDD to send it back. lol -
The function keys are backwards by default (pressing f3 increases brightness, while pressing the fn key + f3 will actually be f3). You can change this in the BIOS.
-
When not at full brightness, the dimmed whites do look bluish to me. It looks good to me at full brightness.
Sorry, I can't help you with a video.
-
I knew about that, and I already changed the BIOS before doing my fresh install. But now, those FN shortcuts do not work anymore (I used all the drivers from the 1106 model while mine is a 1100 CTO model).
Any thought?
Also, where did you get your GPU drivers from?
AMD sends me back to HP, and I cannot locate those drivers on HP website...
Thanks -
Mobility drivers can't be had direct from AMD and HP is dragging with the driver page as it isn't up yet.
did you backup the swsetup folder? That's where all the drivers are/were on your system (c: drive). -
Hmm, it says you have an ATI mobility 5850 GPU...
hmmmmm -
Yeah that's been noted by others, it's a 5830, 3Dmark must need updating in order to recognize the new GPU.
-
Unfortunately, no...
I still have the recovery part of the disk (15 gigs). If I do the recovery of the system, will it regenerate this directory? -
Does anyone else have USB 2 problems from any port? I cannot watch a movie without stuttering, I can't even transfer a couple files without total slow speed and then complete freeze and hard restart.
Everything is factory install, I've not done anything but remove Norton and install Windows updates to see if that helped, but it didn't. -
I am becoming really desperate...
How the hell can I use the recovery partition provided by HP on my HDD?
The BIOS would not let me boot from this partition D:/ as it find Win7 on C:/.
Is the only way I have to order a HP back-up CD?
Thx -
Without that SWsetup folder youll have a hard time for sure.
I have never used a recovery partition before, i always just format EVERYTHING and fresh install... so i cant help you there, sorry.
Maybe if you are located around someone else on here, you can have them throw it on a dvd disk for you and you can pick it up. Im in Southern California if you are interested. -
I am not sure and wish to clean install with my own W7 copy from a flash USB drive too. I've never had it ask for drivers before. I wonder why this is happening?
-
Can you post the LCD model you have? You can use PC Wizard from cpuid to find the Manufacturers string. So far everyone seems to have the LP156WF1 although a different variant of it. So far from what I gathered the main specifications of the display are the same between all the variants of it. So it should be just as bright as the glossy version and display the same 60% color gamut.
-
Apparently I should be able to turn the computer back to factory settings...that is if HP softwares stop messing with me!
I'll see how it goes tonight with the recovery...how big are the drivers files (all)? -
Anyone else find Firefox UI/Interface too small on 1080p? I've got my DPI at 125% but that isn't changing the Firefox Theme buttons etc.
-
Ran PC Wizard but it isn't show a specific model, Just the LGD0258.
-
Have you tried set recover partition to active?
-
The main drivers folder is about 800MB, everything you need for a full setup is about 1GB.
-
swsetup for me was over 2GB, IIRC.
-
Hello,
How did you guys get new ATI drivers on your envy's? I tired to do a fresh win7 install and it's having trouble recognizing the 5830. I used mobility modder with catalyst 9.12 but it doesn't seem to work. Perhaps it's a bad download? -
I'm using the HP driver.
-
FYI, My experience with the battery so far:
I did light to moderate web browsing for 90 minutes with the brightness at 3 clicks below full. The battery had just over 50%.
Then I downloaded an 800MB torrent and continued the browsing. The torrent took about 45 minutes to complete, and I closed the BT client right after and continued browsing. When I got to the critical battery level (8%), the total time was 2.5 hours.
I could have surely surpassed 3 hours without the torrent. -
Glad to hear about the battery life
Thanks for the info! -
When you run PC Wizard go to the Video specific summary. When you click on your monitor it should give more detailed information.
-
The Envy's screen is something like 144DPI. Windows defaults to 90DPI. That said, I don't know how well Firefox respects that or what exactly is going on. You might try 150%... that would be close to the "correct" DPI for the monitor.
-
150% is way too much.
I am running a custom 130% and it's about right. Some browsers don't take DPI settings though. -
GO TO ENVY OWNERS LOUNGE PART 2 FOR THE COLOR PROFILE FOR THE ANTI GLARE DISPLAY. Pg 17
-
How can I do that?
-
Actually acording to 'everest' the spec for the display is 120DPI and it is actually 17:9 ratio 15.7" diag.
-
Was that with or without the extra slim battery?
-
Is it true the new Envy 15 still has intel 5100 wifi ? , ouch
-
That was the standard 6-cell only.
-
So do you guys just set the DPI in windows and use Firefox how it is? Cause the firefox interface looks really small.
-
I am using Opera 10.10 and it looks all right to me...
