I see that in Opera you can change the icon size to make it larger. Can this be done in Firefox? Man I want this feature.

Right click in disk management console.

Edit: Forget to mention, your current windows will not be bootable after change. You need a repair disk. The other option is using bcdedit to boot other parition I think.

I changed it, but still I cannot boot from the RECOVERY partition.

I wanted to try using the USB recovery tool from HP, to make recovery flash drive, but I only have 8 Go flash drive where it needs 12Go... :-(

OMG!!! I finally accessed the recovery tool from HP. Here it is how it hapened:
    - inserted my bootable flash drive with Win7 Pro
    - started the laptop
    - asked Win7 Pro to recover my system
    - it failed, but it still fixed the booting sequence (this is what it said)
    - reboot the computer (usb flash drive removed)
    - then I got the choice between going straight to windows, or finally running the HP recovery tool!!

I am now afraid that my disk letters will be all messed up, but I can fix that more easily!

    Thanks for the help.

Here is a trick for zooming in windows that isn't well known; If you use a mouse, move pointer into window you want to zoom and hold 'ctrl' while scrolling the mouse wheel up or down. Not sure if it works in the programs your using but it is a handy featureto know.

I use pinch to zoom in firefox. I keep the UI small like always, and then just pinch the sites in and out. I am running at 100% dpi. Until MS comes up with a truly resolution independent UI, I a do not want to put up with the sacrifices of using 125%.

    Hey,

For some reason my envy's fans are on all the time. When plugged in, the sound is noticeable, and the palm rests are warm even when idle.

I formatted and clean installed all the necessary drivers, just wondering if maybe there are some drivers/power settings that fix this. I saw in the bios a setting to not keep fans on all the time. Is it safe to change this?

Also, do any of you have OSD when you press the volume/brightness display buttons? My buttons work, there is just no indication on screen...? Is this normal?

One last question. This is my first laptop with all these fancy multitouch touchpad controls. Is there a way to make the scroll and zoom smooth? It seems like when I use it, its moving a fixed line at a time. I am using chrome if that makes a difference. On my friends mac, it seems to be a smooth zoom/scroll. Is this somewhere in the settings?

    Thanks

if you change the bios setting for the fan it just means the fans will come on "on-demand" as opposed to being on all the time.

I believe there is a folder alread resident on the HD called "SW Folder". Save this folder before reformatting. Hopefully, within the next week or so HP will have the drivers updated on their site.

Please do a search, since this has been discussed extensively.

I did a clean install of Win 7 on mine and installed all the drivers from swsetup folder. Everything is working fine now, but there are a number of items which I didn't install other than the regular bloatware.

    ESUW7
    HPHN
    HPSF
    InetSec
    MSiTV
    QuickWeb
    Drivers\IMSM

Can someone tell me if these are required? I was wondering whether this was like the situation when I open up something and end up with spare screws :D

Since this is the 2nd Gen owners lounge, I have a few questions:

Is there an official way to differentiate the old version from the refreshed version? Other than the one with the 5830...

Have we concluded the actual differences between the two models?
    - 4830 vs 5830
    - USB 2 vs 3 on i7
    - 5100 vs 6200 wireless
    - SSD G1 vs G2
    - i5 options

    What other features have changed?

Do we have any conclusive evidence that some improvements were made? What is the consensus? (ex. runs cooler, slightly longer battery life, screen, build quality)

Maybe we should consider adding this info to the first post so newcomers can easily find it.

yes, turn it off in the bios. I did on mine and it is pretty ncie now. Basically, the video card fan will come on for a few seconds every couple of minutes, but the cpu fan will stay off at least.

I have a volume OSD but not a brightness one..

the touchpad drivers are getting better. One of the tricks is to hold your fingers in a horizontal line, ie. parralllel to the screen. pinch to zoom is a little laggy at times, but scroll works pretty well for me. Also make sure to update the drivers to the latest ones, look at teh first page of teh owners lounge.

    Hello,
I seem to be in a bit of trouble. I recently revived my envy 15 gen2 on Friday. I backed up my SW folder with all of the drivers and everything I needed to reinstall my copy of win7 professional. The reinstall went great, and I stuck my USB stick back in to reinstall the drivers. Unfortunately, the drive got corrupt and I've lost all the data on it. Basically, I have no way to install the 5830 or usb 3.0 drivers until HP updates the driver page on their site, which will probably take a good year or so. :p
If someone could provide me with some of the drivers that would be great. I was also going to reinstall the IOS software, but that's not really that important. I was thinking of trying a data recovery software, hopefully that works. I'm basically sitting on a brick until the drivers come around.

So do you have no fans running for the most part? I can hear some sorta whirring all the time under the right palm rest. Is that where the HDD is? Every once in awhile i hear the spin up of another fan.

Hello there Qwyjibo85, yes, that is where the HDD is found.

The fans do turn on every now and then, but not all the time at full blast. They are audible when tasking the CPU (in my case the i7 720QM). HDD if it is 7200RPM, they are known for being a tad louder than their 5400RPM counterparts, but that is due to the extra spin speed. Normally it is non-audible, but if you pay attention, the sound is there.

    thanks for the reply Serg,

Do you know of any settings for the spindown of the harddrive (7200 320g)? My laptop sounds the same when copying files and running idle... I think at one point it did spin down.. But not it doesnt do that anymore.

I installed all the chipset/ahci-sata/turboboost drivers from the driver page.

Im in Southern California, near magic mountain. If anyone is in dire need of a dvd with the SWsetup folder to get up and running, you can come pick one up from me. Thats all i can offer.

The main drivers and basic utilities you need is 1GB, the rest of the fluff is trial software and crap that hp bloatloads... ive already deleted that stuff so i cant give you that crap however.

Ya, that is the hard drive. I wish I could have gotten a 500GB 5400rpm drive instead. More space, less noise, less poewr consumption and less heat, without a major sacirifice in performance. Oh well, its a good reason to get an SSD, although I am really regretting not upgrading to an SSD in the first place because HPs prices were really good.

Not the end of the world though, I just can't do any gaming on my new laptop yet.

There are only 4 thing you need from the SWsetup folder:

    1. The "drivers" folder... install everything in there, but DO NOT install the intel matrix storage manager IF you have seperated your G2 SSDs .

    2. Quicklaunch Buttons installer

    3. Webcam/Light sensor installer

    4. Wireless Assistant installer

After all that, i also recommend installing the 9.12 Driver on www.strags.com AFTER you have the HP 9.11 drivers installed and working.

Everything else in that SWsetup folder is HP software or useless (to me, you may want them...and thats ok) drivers/utilities.

    Have fun!

    What error do you get?

I installed the HP provided driver suite, rebooted, then went into device manager and clicked update driver on the 5830.

Choose manual locate a couple times, and pick any file in that strags download. it will list 4 options for the 5830, i chose the first one. it doesnt take long and it updates the driver.

You could always install the drivers through device manager and tell it to search the SWsetup folder for the correct drivers. That way it will only install the drivers and you know that no extra software is being installed with it. (You'll probably need to extract the contents of exe files in SWsetup to do this - you can use WinRAR).

Even some required drivers can have installers that install some unneeded software. This way you wont even get any of that.

I don't have my ENVY yet, so I can't give exact steps. But this is how I've done it in the past with laptops. Makes for a VERY clean install. No extra wireless managers, no extra audio software that I will never use with just 2 laptop speakers, etc. Just drivers.

And if you decide you need some of the software, you can always go and install that particular EXE.

EDIT: Sorry this response appeared a little late. Didn't refresh the page for a while when I should have ;-) Oh well.

Thats true. Although the envy drivers folder is mostly oem installaions and is very lightweight. You also want the wireless manager, and the envy beats audio control panel. They are very much needed utilities for this laptop.
