Yes, using either the 2 finger scroll or if you are used to one finger scroll like me I use the right edge single scroll to scroll up and down and it works fine. Look at the synaptics settings and set them as you like it.
-
Maybe this will help you even though it didn't work for me.Sounds logical enough.
-
English, do you speak it?
And speaking of morally not right, it's morally not right to sell me a premium machine that has broken parts in 4 days of very delicate and light usage.
If HP doesn't want me to return it, don't offer me a 21 day no hassle return policy. -
it is amazing to me that this 5 pound slab can run Oblivion at 1080p & 2xAA with everything maxed and still get smooth fps. just 4 years ago it was causing desktop GPUs to choke. SSD makes a huge difference too in cutting load times from minutes to seconds. love this thing! i would not trade down to an Envy 14.
-
yes i speak it calm down sorry i don't type perfect, also was I talking to u. No I don't think so.
Back on topic now, whats your guys gpu temp after gaming. -
I wouldn't call the 15 perfect but HP tried to put a very good specced config into a tight package. In my opinion the Core i7-Quad i way too hot and power hungry for any mobility notebook. At 1 inch thin and < 5.5 lbs the Envy is remarkably a most competent light notebook. The only drawback is non-switchable graphics which is one reason I chose the quad in mine. If this machine had switchable/hybrid graphics it would overtake any notebook in the thin/light notebook segment.
I've been running VM software and have been testing VirtualBox which has a very unique feature that is able to pass graphics primitives directly to the host driver and have it accelerated by the Hardware GPU. In this case with a Mobility 5830 which really works well. This is unique in that VirtualBox is not a HyperVisor but is able to virtualize the GPU. -
New Core i7, Core i5 mobile processors to debut in HP Envy? -- Engadget
Thats very interesting CPU lineup.... I wonder if they are low voltage cpus. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
they aren't
-
didn't see mention of it in the article but are these new quads going to be on the 32nm process? i assume it will help reduce heat when they move off of 45nm.
still i would rather have core i5 dual until the quads have lower power requirements... for now, save the heavy compute tasks for a desktop PC. -
Yeah, I wonder whats the point of introducing same processes CPUs. hmmm
-
okay, I've just gone through the third same event: I'm gaming (this time it was assassin's creed 2) and suddenly the power goes off as if someone literally yanked the cord out. this is with the battery in too..
what could this be? -
i had similar problems long ago, did a fresh reinstall (not the HP restore discs) and haven't had any issues since.
-
Does anyone know of a way to format the SD card that comes with the Envy with the manuals on it so that you could just use it as a regular SD card?
It says it's protected when I try -
Check the tiny switch on the card, it may be 'locked'.
-
Thanks JJB! I should of thought of that lol
-
It actually doesn't step down the voltage, that just connects the right pins, makes a compatible socket. If you look at your power supply you can see that it can accept 100-240V input, and that is what handles India vs. the US power conversion.
If you pay more than $15 for an adapter set, you paid too much.
On a completely different note, I finally think I have my Envy just like I want it... 128GB SuperTalent SSD, and the GPU maxes out at 80C while running Furmark overclocked to 550/1050, completely stable. w00t. -
I'm thinking of picking up an envy 15 but I have one quick question (i hope I'm not hijacking this thread and that it's ok to ask here). Does the envy ship with 2*2gb ram modules and 2 addiditional free slots or am I missing something?
-
@moviemarketing & Pitabred
Is there a name for that type of adapter and do you have any recommendations for where I would get one? I'm being sent to India this summer, that's one of the main reasons I bought the Envy.. gimme something to do while i'm holed up in the hotel. -
if you get an i5 it comes with a motherboard that has 2 ram slots (1 user accessible) each filled with a 2gb module. if you get an i7 it comes with a different motherboard that has 4 ram slots (2 user accessible) with 2x2gb modules in the non-accessible location. note that even the non-accessible locations are pretty easy to get to since the Envy's shell is easy to take apart.
-
awesome! thanks for the fast answer! i7 envy here I come!
-
easy to take apart no way I always here its a pain. If this is true I am getting me a ssd, but I wonder if it will lower the heat. also how would I get windows on it without cd drive hmmm
-
taking it apart is easy, just like 20 screws and remove a couple of ribbons between the motherboard and keyboard/trackpad. getting the ribbons back in place is a bit of a pain but i managed it. the ssd i swapped in is an OEM intel x25-M. much faster obviously. you can then reinstall windows directly from a usb key. write down the windows key under the battery, load a copy of windows onto a usb drive and you're good to go. you can download the ISO from microsoft. hit up google for instructions...
-
did it help with heat do or does it still get warm there and 20 screws holy cow.
-
hey guys
about that 2-2.5 hrs battery life you all are reporting with the i5s
is it with or without the slice?
regular use, under load or undere some other plan? -
without slice, regular use (no gaming)
-
Does the envy have problems with throttling when the power adaptor is connected (like the xps seems to have)?
-
The Envy does not throttle when connected. However, It throttles down to 9X when on battery.
P.S. I believe Dell fixed the Xps throttling issue last time I checked. -
they kinda fixed the issue.... it now gets too hot and downclocks itself.... a issue that can be fixed by adding another fan
-
Something like this should work for you. They're generally called travel power adapters or something similar.
-
whoa! so that equates to about 6-7.5 hrs with the slice? reg. use
and about 3-5 hrs of heavy use?
also as i understand it.......no slice has been announced for the envy17
and with the announced components i think th batt. life figures wouldnt be very impressive
so to sum up what ive been reading so far(correct me if im wrong):
the i5 envy 15s dont suffer from the initial heat problems of the i7 envys ie they run moderately cool
have better batt. life
and with th slice the batt life is awesome
weight with the slice is comparable to gaming machines
agreed 5830 is no 5850/5870
but 5830 is not exactly a slouch
and if you think of it in terms of current gaming machines:
for the same weight
youre changing the power of the 5850 to 5830 in order to gain a much cooler machine, 3-5 extra hrs of extra bttry life.
right?
if true
I think thats pretty reasonable
and i think ive finally found my machine
plus with hp apparently discontinuing the 13 &15, methinks we should expect some good discounts appearing again soon -
There not discontinuing the 15...only the 13in one. Compared to the dell studio xps 16 this thing is about 25c cooler when gaming and about 20-15c when oc gaming
-
That's excessively expensive. Since the power brick of the Envy will already accept 120-240v, it'll work in any country that supplies AC power. The trick is to get the right "tip". For that, a simple "travel adapter" that doesn't do any AC power conversion will work fine. I bought one from Radio Shack a while back for about 20 bucks that had most of the international tips in it (but no grounding, as it turns out). If you pay more than that, you're overpaying.
For India specifically, and assuming that the Envy's Power adapter can actually do 120-240V (which I'm 90% sure it can - when I get home, I can tell you with 100% certainty) at 50-60 Hz, all you need is something like this to work. Plus, it's only 10 bucks, and you can pick it up from a local Radio Shack if you want to. -
Interesting. Why didn't you just go with the 410 GB option in the original HP Envy 15? that's "only" +310 dollars (cheaper than the standalone Super Talent Drive just about anywhere), has more SSD space (128 GB vs. 160 GB) plus you get a "free" 250 gig drive. So it saves some cash, plus the Intel SSD is better than the SuperTalent SSD.
Perhaps it wasn't an available option when you bought. -
Does anyone else notice that their GPU fan is much louder than their dual CPU fans. I find it odd, since I am on my second Envy 15 and it still seems this way.
-
With light load they should be about the same volume. The difference your hearing is the fact that there is 1 fan for the GPU and 2 fans for the CPU. When the GPU has a load it will spin faster than the CPU fans, they both vary speeds as needed to maintain the preset cooling profile controlled by the BIOS. Some BIOS versions have a noticable difference in fan speeds, temps, noise levels and how often and when they cycle on and off....
-
ya mine is loud too but its honestly not that bad... I can not hear it when my laptop speakers are all the way up.... and the only time the gpu fan gets loud is when i game so.... I don't even care....as a comparison when I had my dell xps the fan would be 2x as loud as the laptop speakers
-
with fans turned off in the bios it runs totally silent for minutes at a time while i'm just poking around on the net. it's kind of weird after being used to noisy PCs.

Has anyone running the F .24 BIOS noticed a significant reduction in battery life ??
My best guess is that the fan speeds at idle are higher than before with F 18 or F19. With all settings the same I was able to get an easy 2.5 hrs with fans on, now, with F .24 I am at 42% after 55 miniutes (but temps are lower 25C CPU and 32C GPU). -
While it doesn't effect me directly since I don't have any SSD's yet I thought I'd share a bit of an email I just got. I use Disk Keeper on both my desktop and laptophard drives and have always been happy with its defragging routines. Anyway I guess their really pushing how their HyperFast tech boosts SSD performance. Anyway here is a pic from the email they sent me:
(Before and after HyperSpeed)
I don't work for em or get anything for passing the info. Just thought I'd share it in case anyones interested. While I'm sure their being generous on their figures it still sounds like it would do a good job at least. -
I got the SuperTalent drive for $200 lightly used from a friend, and I didn't have the cash for the SSD options when I bought the Envy. I believe it was also pricier at the time. And now I have a 500GB external eSATAp drive that I can put my media on and get native transfer speeds, but not have to power up if I don't need it. I was going to pick up a 256GB SSD once I got some more cash, but I couldn't pass up this one at this price, and it turns out that after I trim some extra crap down that I don't need on it, it's plenty of space, and with the new firmware that supports TRIM it actually is very fast.

Here are some temps using the latest bios (f.26) and Catalyst 8.712.0.0 after playing Dead Space for an hour using the highest settings and 1080p resolution
Are these pretty good temps?Attached Files:

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Not bad at all. They seem pretty cool under gaming. -
@strikesaber47
That's what I was thinking
After finally getting my bluetooth issue resolved I am very happy with the envy -
@Stefan
Are you noticing the same issue of the battery not staying charged as long like I saw mentioned by other with the new bios? -
@bratboy
I never really used it without it being plugged in before I upgraded to the latest bios (two days after getting it) so I can't say... -
Ah, thanks for at least letting me know, much appreciated. Have/had a ton of upgrades to do I had to wait until school was done to muck about with. So far I just finished rebuilding my desktop with a i-7 980x and upped the mem from 6 to 12 gigs so its kept me busy getting it nice and smooth.
Now its time to start on the laptop. Still haven't changed out the mem yet on it and then plan on tweaking it too, muhahahaah -
Do you guys think it is worth the hassle to return my envy and reorder it with the 200 off coupon? Im debating this since It is the cost of one of my collage classes and its books...
Edit:
Also does anyone know the best way to get a little extra bass from the speakers? The mids and highs sound GREAT but theres 110% no bass -
call HP customer support and ask for a 200 off. they should give it to you, because if they don't, you can return it and re-purchase it with the $200 discount, wasting their money and time.
-
Well, try and be nice about it tho. HP is good about trying to keep customers happy but at the same time they don't need to be abused, well maybe a few of the CS ppl but in general not most of em, LOL
Oh and lucky you if a class with books is 200 or less, Mine never seem that cheap
