Back in July 2009, I ordered a HP desktop. It was delayed 2 days exactly and, without any intervention from me, I was emailed a $50 gift card to their store.

It was a definitely a nice gesture on their part :)

I'm happy to hear all the positive experiences people have had with HP orders. In general, I've had mediocre experiences with Dell and similar companies. At least, they don't go out of their way to give you the best experience possible.

Never order from buy.com. They're horrible with customer service. One time I ordered something and a month later I asked why it hasn't shipped, and they said "oops, that item is no longer for sale, sorry. we'll refund you now."

Made me wonder if I never asked about it, if they'd ever give me back my money.

Thanks for the tip, I was also looking at the GX640 when Amazon had 2-3 left (now it's on backorder/preorder). It looks like a good contender, another alternative was the Sony Vaio VPCCW27FX at Bestbuy for $979.

FYI the 330m isn't even close to the 5830/5850 available in the Envy and the GX640. They outclass it by a mile

agree. the 5830 outclasses the 330m. if you see an nvidia chip--run!

Any -i5 core is pretty much fine all the way up to i7 620m if you wanna pay for it. the key is the GPU. all about the GPU and an SSD.

Interesting. I guess I've been lucky in the past with buy.com. I've ordered a dozen or more things over the years and never had even one issue.

And their reseller rating is 5 stars with over 63,000 reviews. *shrug*

Agreed that the 330M is outclassed. It's a viable alternative for me since I don't game that much.

Saw that. I'm cool with that route. Paris is a 7 hour flight to New York and then hopefully on the truck by Friday.

Received my external USB DVD drive today that I ordered on Monday. That was quick, so I do have hope.

Mine is also in Paris, though I am in Wisconsin, so we'll see what happens with that. Since it's Wednesday, I'm still not sure if it'll make here before the week is out. I'd rather not wait until Tuesday like they claim.

Has anyone who had ship dates for yesterday or today have their orders delayed yet? I ordered on 4/7 and my ship date is 4/16 (Friday) and I was just wondering if I should expect mines to be delayed also (430, 1080p brightview)

Those who had their build date on the 12th had theirs delayed until the 21st. If your build is affected I don't see it being on time. My 430m / glossy 1080p was one of those affected.

Mine was supposed to ship yesterday, but it's still listed as Order In Production. I hate to be impatient, but I have someone waiting on me to sell my current notebook when this one arrives... and they're starting to get antsy. As of now, I haven't received any emails since the original order information.

Should I call HP and see what the deal is (knowing full well that most of us with the i5 430m / 1080P glossy are getting delayed), or would complaining about it being one day after the estimated ship date be uncalled for?

I waited until 2 business days (a weekend) after the ship date before calling and the delay email and $50 coupon came shortly thereafter.

It does say "estimated ship date" after all.

what could it hurt calling today? You expected your order to ship yesterday and it didn't, calling for an update as to whats going on is not unwarranted or uncalled for

My laptop has just been sitting in Paris for almost a full 24 hours now, doing nothing, and it's had be a bit worried. In all of the packages I've tracked through FedEx, I've never had something inactive for so long before. Is this normal?

Mine is doing the same thing. It's nothing to worry about, it's just being sorted at the facility in Paris before it's sent to the US. The problem with this is is that it almost guarantees that we'll be waiting over the weekend to get our laptops.

Same here, my order with the same specs got delayed ; order date 3/31
Just like you, I got 25 not 50 through the email. The CSR did say that the delayed orders are automatically upgraded to 2 day ship.

The order status still shows April 12th as the estimated ship date on the website

Hundred of flights have been canceled in Europe due to the recent volcano eruption in iceland(ash and dirt in the sky) so that may be what is causing the delay.

So, I called them. The wait time was about 5-10 seconds (amazing compared to Dell, etc. which tend to run 1-2 minutes or more). The guy I spoke to was extremely polite and relatively easy to understand. He took the order number and informed me that it was still in production (duh), but said that if I called back in 4-6 hours, they could give me an exact idea of how long it should still be. I assume that means they need to call the factory and / or shipping department and figure out what the hold up is.

I didn't threaten to cancel the order, since the guy was so nice. I figure I should at least wait 4 hours, call back, and get the scoop. If they talk to me about part shortages and delays, I'll threaten to cancel and see what they want to do. On the other hand, the rep I spoke to said he'll put a note on the order that I need the computer in hand by Monday. I'll see how much weight that actually carries.

Overall, I'm both shocked and impressed. What an awesome, different experience (just on a short phone call) from what I'm used to dealing with from Dell and similar companies.

    Ugh, just got the email:

    Dear Brian Hansen,

Due to product constraints we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 4/28/2010 or no later than 10 business days from the original estimated ship date.

Whoa whoa whoa.... you want me to wait another TWO WEEKS for this thing to ship? Screw that.

I called customer service again and complained about the email I just received, also stating that the previous CSR I had spoken to assured me he would put in a note to get this thing to me Monday / early next week. The CSR I spoke to this time (again, no delay, and very polite) told me that their system still stated 4/14 as the build date and promised me that with two day shipping, I would have it by Friday. I'm doubting that, but we'll see.

If I don't have a confirmation that it shipped by Monday, I'll call and raise Hell (nicely). I've now had two CSRs say it won't take another two weeks to get here.

If it gets to my door by mid next week I'll be satisfied. Otherwise they're going to have to offer a hell of a discount for me to consider not cancelling.

Cancelled mine - my expected ship date was April 13th, and the new estimated was also April 28th. I've already been without a laptop for over a month, using a very old dell latitude. going to just wait it out for either the asus UL30JT (completely different product type, i know) or shop around some more.

FYI - i also asked if i could instead get their quick ship model since the configuration price was exactly the same as mine. they said they could not do this because the coupon had expired and could only knock off $200 rather than $450...wth?!

To the dude who can't get a coupon---

If anyone is in San Francisco and wants mine unopened --I'll give it to you for what I paid. It hasn't come yet but should come in the next day or two.

It's a 720 with the Screen Upgrade to Brightview 1080. No other upgrades. it was like 1479 or something with tax. I can check if ya want.

P.S. for them to not give ya a coupon after this delay--really bad manners.

The thing that sucks about the delays is that Amazon has it in stock with the exact same configuration that I ordered. i5 430, 4gig ram, 1920 brightview. Obviously it isn't really that customized because they obviously make the exact machine for resale. Just ship one to me instead of amazon.

those are actually the quick ship models - which HP can also ship out ASAP. that is also the model that i was denied being able to transfer my coupon over to, even tho my config was identical (ultrabright, i5-420M, external optical, 500gig 7200rpm hard drive).

edit: in hindsight, guess its completely my fault for not ordering the quick ship model to begin with. ah well, live and learn.

So what's the point of calling it a customized model if it ends up being the quick ship model? You'd think for the sake of efficiency they would have a system that checks if your customized model matches any current regular model offerings and then just tell the workers to ship one that's already made. It doesn't make any sense.

I ordered my Envy on the 4/4 and it was supposed to be shipped on 4/14. I received a delay until 4/28 today, so I called HP to cancel my order. I'm strongly considering the Dell Studio 15 for it's light weight and supposedly good sound system.

Same thing here, lousy! I'm leaning towards cancellation despite the original $450 and a more recent $25 coupon. The only thing holding back my cancellation trigger finger is I fear I cannot replicate the $450 deal and get near value from another manufacturer.

Oh, and what good is a $25 coupon? To sucker me into investing even more money into HP-product I cannot receive in a timely fashion?

Not to mention there's not that many items in the HP store that are really worthwhile. I didn't get the external DVD drive when I ordered the envy, so I looked what it would be with the $25 off coupon and it's still $47 after shipping and taxes. It's still $25 off, but what good is it if it all goes into shipping and taxes (whereas amazon purchases typically have free shipping and no taxes). But to be fair, if you order something that is non-customizable they will probably get it to you within a week without delay.

Wait a minute, so our laptops are getting delayed because someone at fedex decided Paris would be agood route rather than from China to the west coast?

Sucks for France, but: Epic fail!

I think a select few are having shipping delays but mine is still in manufacturing so I doubt shipping has anything to do with it. If I wait 2 more weeks on manufacturing the last thing I want to hear is another delay due to Paris/shipping.

I didn't think about the external drive, that probably makes the most sense (except that I'd probably blow a gasket if I got it before the laptop). But ya, the shipping and tax don't quite make it a deal.

Decisions, decisions, in the back of my mind I'm hearing, "Dude, you should have got a Dell".

The ironic thing is I decided to give HP a try because of Dell's customer service regarding the NVIDIA faulty chip. Then I realized HP had the same problem and same treatment of it.

Even more ironic, the customer service at both are pretty much on the same level, earnestly good but lacking in execution.

This might be the most depressing thing ever. After being delayed and every conceivable issue occurring, even mother nature doesn't want me to have my Envy. :(
