Where did you get the idea that T510 has an IPS display? The T510 with discrete graphics allows for the selection of a 1080P (FHD) screen, but it appears to be a standard LED-backlit wide gamut TN display. The only place you'll find IPS is on a few 12-inch tablet models. (Unfortunately....)

You've got to realize HP is a Chinese company. If you don't read, write, or speak Chinese it will be hard to get the details. Unfortunately, that seems to apply to their service reps as well, who have been given most of the general details but not all of the small very technical details. I'm sure it's the same situation for Dell in China.

And besides, I do pay attention in class, so having a laptop makes that impossible haha. xD

Edit: Or missing a LOT of ports... Esata for one... =P

Envy is the best choice! haha...

Please don't take this the wrong way but what are you talking about?

HP is the largest IT company in the world, # 9 on fortune 500 US, #32 on fortune 500 globally, gross revenue of 114B in 09 with 300,000+ employees and operations in 170 countries. PC's are part of the personal systems group (PSG) which includes basically everything on hp.com site both business and personal and all of that is less than 30% of their revenue and has one of the lowest profit margins.

They are a US founded (1930's) US based and US managed company. Just because they have partnerships and investments in chinese subcontractors who assemble products for the PSG (computers) it does not make them a 'Chinese company'. All HP's designs, drawings and specs are fully translatable to and from any lanuage so they are transportable to any factory or vendor worldwide for accurate assembly and / or manufacturing.

Sorry for spewing. Being an HP stockholder I get all those facts and more in each quarterly report. If you want to learn more about who your buying from just check out the 'about us' links....

That being said I am just as frustrated as everyone with how poorly the information flow has been with regards to the Envy line. But it definately has nothing to do with, as you stated: "HP is a Chinese company. If you don't read, write, or speak Chinese it will be hard to get the details."

So what if HP is the largest IT company in the world ? So was GM. They went bankrupt. The inherent issue with HP's outsourcing model is that they are no longer relying on Tier 1 notebook manufacturers like Asus , Compal or Qandra ..instead , many of HP products are being made by Tier 2 or 3 China based companies..because of margins..HP has a tendency to go for the cheapest ...

In China, one either manufactures products UP to a Standard (Apple, Sony , Lenovo) , or DOWN to a price.

No wonder HP products are so unreliable

I can certainly understand everyone's frustration with delays. I also want my computer sooner than later. From my perspective the $50 coupon is a reasonable gesture.

Look around...how many i7 notebooks really compete with Envy? Very few options really. I will keep my eye out for options while I wait.

    - Sony F series: i7 & Bluray, cheaper build, weaker graphics, and certainly no USB3, heavier
    - Lenovo W510: i7, generic looking, but good build quality and easier to modify, high gamut screen option, relatively weak graphics card at moment. More expensive. heavier, took almost all i7 models off the internet with no update on status!
    - Dell XPS16, expensive if configured as i7, major throttling issues
    - Alienware & Asus: gamer focused, heavy, gaudy
    - You can go lighter with better battery life as long as you don't mind a weak processor (Mac & Dell Adamo, etc.)
    - You can go mainstream, but inexpensive & cheaply built, lesser graphics, i7 (look to HP's own quad series)
    - We can wait for Dell and HP to refresh their business notebooks. Good build quality, but will be heavier and probably more expensive.

As far as I know HP & Dell are some of the few large American PC manufacturers left.

    - Lenovo (Chinese Owned)
    - Asus (Taiwanese Owned)
    - Sony (Japanese Owned)

Looks like HP has made more spec changes to the Envy 15. The price is now back to $1299, but the base processor has been downgraded from the i5-520m to a i5-430M. The i7-620m is now gone as well.

Still no shipment delay notice on my order, still "Order in production (Estimated to ship on January 19, 2010)"

    Hello all,

Can someone tell us the typical dialogue with the customer rep to get the credit ?

from what i am reading after getting the delayed email, just called can say you are angry and needed it by certain date. Do we need to threaten them to cancel ( even tho i dont want to cancel )?

Or how can we get 100 dollars off versus the 50 dollar store credit? it appears some people get 100 off by trying to choose the change harddrive option. and the angry delayed people get 50 dollar credit.

Sorry but i want to call them with all my ammo for the best results.

Well, I was able to receive a 50 dollars off for the delay. simply just call them up and explaining to them that the coupon would be totally useless for me. the CSR has to speak with her manager, and eventually they are willing to offering me an additional 50 dollars for the entire order thus 1252.25 - 50 = 1202.25 shipped. they also told me that the 50 dollars coupon is still good until 1/31/2010, and advise me to use it before then.

overall it took me less than 20 mins for the entire conversation.

That is pretty good. I have spent a total of 3+ hours on the phone handling the return and re-order. Though I did call and speak to someone not outsourced and asked about the $500 coupon last week and they compared it to the EPP discount and credited me with the balance! All within 15 minutes! If it wasn't such a great machine, I would have taken my business elsewhere.

What's the number everyone's calling? Is it the 1 (800) 474-6836 number from the order page? I'm at a client's site so I don't have a lot of time to go around trying to find the right place to get annoyed that it was supposed to be built and shipped yesterday and I have no communication about it yet.

On a lighter note, the $100 Sony USB Blu-Ray drive I ordered arrived in New York two days ago (silly USPS just updating it today...) so I should have a Blu-Ray drive for whenever my Envy finally arrives...

I find it funny how the Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3 lines were supposed to be clear cut, High end, main stream, lower end(budget) and with all those models they've introduced in that Toms hardware table, it seems they are just blurring the lines too much, and its almost like a sneaky ploy to charge more for an i7 label when its actually an i5 or slower... weird..

Intel's pricing makes sense for the most part, but HP's pricing is ridiculous. I'd gladly pay the $107 that Intel has between the i5-520M and the i7-620M, but not much more. If I knew that the envy Arrandale builds had switchable graphics, I think the i7-620LM would be the best choice for me.

The price gap (both Intel and HP) that makes the least sense to me is the i5-520M to i5-540M. No offense to those that chose the 540. I just don't think that minor upgrade is worth the price they list for my needs.

The 320GB drive is a 2.5" drive. I believe you can only install 2 1.8" drives, not 2 2.5" drives. So, if you go with the 320GB, you would need the 1.8" bracket and 2 brand new drives if you want to have 2 drives installed.

Or, just upgrade to a 2.5" internal SSD and use the 320GB drive as an external drive.

Good luck finding an "open market" 160gb SSD for a comparable price. Newegg still has them for around $475. Heck, for that price you might as well just go for the dual SSD option.

I got the dual SSD option for the 550 upgrade and it seems to be a good bargain. I'm getting ~480mbs transfer speed with all my programs installed which is pretty sick :D . Even though they are Gen 1 drives, they are RAIDed so trim doesn't matter anyway.
