Battery life could be a huge issue unless you'll always be tethered. My i5 15 gets maybe 2hrs with brightness below 40%.

Also, the 5850 is listed as ddr5. Should it not be gddr5??

oh. ouch. well yea...you can buy the Envy 17 today and get 2 batteries for $70 (- 25%). Guess you can putt the big butt battery on when you're going to travel or if you need the extra juice.

you don't lose multitouch. 4 finger swipe-that's it. the battery life is not as awesome but that may change with better bootcamp drivers.
the one advantage apple has is you can get one w/ no sales tax if you go thru the right reseller. harder to do with HP so the price difference is not that much. however, one of those big coupon sales would do the trick.

Also, i like the 20% more screen real estate I get with the macbook pro. It's very important!

    fair enough.

but really...the multitouch is much better implemented with the MBP. anyway, I agree about going through the right resellers. but if you know of any resellers that are doing better than $2250 on a MBP 17", PM me please.

there is a config at some apple stores for a matte high rez option...BUT for resellers they usually won't get you big discounts on that. also you can call them and place a custom order, however---you won't get the big discounts and rebates.
I love glossy so it was no prob for me...2049 + I bought a 256 gig SSD for 606 or so. about the same price as a envy 17 but larger SSD.

The State of Delaware has no sales tax. Everybody from Philadelphia/south jersey area drives to Delaware for large appliance purchases. :p Make friends in Delaware and have your laptop sent there. :D

    marshman,
On your MBP, you don't have heat problems running non-game Win7 apps and browsing Flash sites on Chrome or IE? Is it an i5 or i7 MBP 17? Also, battery life still seems like 5 hours or so for Win7?

    I have to decide between a MBP17 i5 and an Envy 15g3/17.

    TIA,
    Jason

I'm considering this configuration through HP Academy for the Envy 17:

    Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    660GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (SSD 160GB + 500GB 7200RPM)
    1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics
17.3" diagonal Full HD HP Ultra BrightView Infinity LED Display (1920x1080)
Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    HP TrueVision HD Webcam
    Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    Full-size island-style backlit keyboard
50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
    No Productivity Software
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Plus a 23 inch monitor (likely a pseudo-TV for me with HDMI input), Targus cable lock, chill mat, and 3 year warranty with Accidental Coverage (apparently a big need in my field for some reason). Total comes to around $3000, just about right for the money I saved and invested by not getting a laptop in college. I'll probably wait to see benchmarks for the 5850, screen quality, and battery life before committing.

Haven't had a good experience dealing with HP Tech Support but I guess that was a long time ago and was for a Pavilion PC back in 2000. Has it gotten any better?

Everything looks good except for that Targus Chill Mat. Its garbage made from cheap plastic. I owned one before and bought it at Staples, the plastic fans broke after like 2 months. Get yourself a metal cooler with metal fans, like the Zalman NC2000. Also since your waiting to purchase keep a look out for another 25+% Bing Cash Back, I assume it will give a bigger discount over HP Academy.

    Hi,
dunnot know if it is off topic, but i would want to have a 160gb ssd AND a 1tb 2.5" hard drive. Since the 1tb cannot be chosen in the configurator, i would take the 160gb ssd and buy seperatly a 1tb hard drive, but i dont know where to buy one. Also, what extra pieces will i need to install it?

    Thank you in advance

you probably noticed that english is not my primary language, so sorry for the mistakes :D

I gotta agree with you there in both ways, but I've dropped my iPhone the same amount of times the AT&T service has dropped my calls. This is without no protective case, only thing on my iPhone is the anti-glare screen protector. The plastic casing has scratches everywhere but no cracks anywhere or other serious type of damage.

HP Parts and accessories store sells the extra HDD brackets.

    Part# 603772-001
Hard Drive Hardware Kit (includes primary hard drive bracket and cable and secondary hard drive
    bracket and cable)

I am not sure if you would be able to just purchase 1 bracket. However, in the manual it seems to infer that it is possible.

"NOTE: The hard drive spare part kit includes a hard drive bracket and hard drive connector cable."

All the info above was taken from the ENVY 17 manual.

If you want the direct number to the parts store , here it is: 1-800-227-8164 (Number was given by a HP CS rep) :D

Duly noted. And I hope there's another 25+% cashback sometime from the first Envy 17 benchmarks to the time I need to hit the books. Currently, it's at 10% I believe which is the same as HP Academy.

I don't know to be honest with you. But keep an eye out on the Envy 17 owner's thread. I believe Jaxxy from Australia, has received his shipping info today and he should be getting his Envy 17 early next week. So he'll be one of the first to give us his thoughts about that system.

Envy 17. A disappointment for me.

Hp made a major mistake pushing this laptap out the door without Switchable Graphics. Where is the intel i7-620LM / i7-640LM Switchable graphics option. Its their number one failure. I wait before spending any cash.

Second, no Wimax options. This only increases internet access options. Again I'll wait. Because HP WHITELISTED the bios we can't switch the PCI-e Cards ourselves. So we can't upgrade it without hacking it. Again, I'll wait till they get it write.

Third, no intel 160GB hard drive in bay 1 option with 500/640GB in bay two option (a 12.5mm Hard drive in this bay would be nice. We could go 1TB withthe newest western digital drive in this bay.). Come on, a SSD is 3 times faster for the OS. I'd pay for it and it a must have in my book. If could, I'd link directly to the PCI-e Bus.

Fourth, I'd like to have the ATI w/ HDTV Tuner with internal & external antenna arrays. America went to the HDTV standard. If a signal is received its a clear 1080p picture on the 1080p screen. They could allow raw digital storage of the airwave signal too to a 100GB or 200GB Partition. That enforces HDCP but allows it to have DVR mode as well.

Fifth, Bluetooth & FM/AM would be nice too. The circuits are tiny and almost zero heat. Why not?

Sixth, ok Eyeinfinity on 3 Desktops. Ok. Why Displayport, SVGA, HDMI.
I rather have 3 Displayport Ports which can become backward compatible with HDMI or DVI with dongle. Screw SVGA. Its being pushed as an eyeifinity machine. Any buyer who purchases three screens wants display port on all three screens that way it solves all his resolutions issues.

Side notes, HP is not posting these negative comments on it website and Truely listening to their customer's review about what they make. There deleting the negative comments. They just don't take the feedback and build a better product with it. I'd like to stay with a company that shows continual improvement and designs approved by customer usage.

Envy 17 is supposed to be a High class super laptop thats doesn't muster up. It only got a nice metal chassis and 1080p screen. Thats a beautiful Ferrari without it's engine in my book. Clearly not worth the money.

No self respecting laptop maker is going to put a ULV processor and graphics into a powerhouse 17" laptop. It's just not going to happen. 17" laptops are designed with the mind of wanting a lot of power, so obviously you don't want to be crippled by a ULV. Switchable graphics would be nice, but it would probably bump up the cost a fair bit as well.

You do know it is extremely easy to buy your own SSD and hard drive and set up the combination you want, don't you? Complaining that HP doesn't offer certain configs for hard drives is just stupid, considering you can buy your own drives and replace them. Would most likely be cheaper as well.

Maybe the one thing I do agree with you on is Bluetooth. There is no reason for a machine like this to be missing Bluetooth, but FM/AM radio capability is kind of useless. My laptop has it, and I have never used it once. I'm not sure that many other people would either.

Three Displayports wouldn't be all that optimal. There aren't even all that many monitors that have it as standard. Anyone who buys this laptop, and wants to use it with an external monitor or television will not want to bother with getting adapters and other accessories. The wider array of ports is more useful, I believe. Although Dual Link DVI would be preferred over VGA.

Even desktop cards don't have 3 Displayports.

It's supposed to be a desktop replacement, low voltage processors don't make a whole lot of sense. That being said, they do offer i5 CPUs with integrated graphics but don't seem to have a switchable graphics option. You're right, they should have included it, but really, it's a desktop replacement.

They do offer this, or did until they ran out of SSDs. Numerous people chose the 160 GB SSD + 500 GB HDD option when they ordered.

Do any laptops come with any sort of TV tuner anymore? I haven't seen one in years, but you do know there are USB 3.0 HDTV tuners coming out, right?

There is bluetooth... and FM/AM tuner in a laptop?! Really? Really?

Because I'm pretty sure at the time the Envy17 was made, DisplayPort did not carry audio signals. HDMI does, so it helps people who like to connect their computers to their HDTVs, not just their monitors. I do agree that the VGA port is getting to be very outdated, but I can see the argument for included it as a legacy port.

I think he's a troll. No one seriously expects their laptop to come with AM/FM antennas, right?

At its price point, assuming the build quality is decent (yet to be seen, since it is HP...), the Envy 17 is a deal. Most of the stuff he's asking for is just superfluous. Anyone who talks about wanting AM/FM, but also WiMAX and no VGA/HDMI has to be trolling.

I been lurking here for a while but I think the Envy 17 seems like a fairly good deal.
I'm between a 6500 [more money than I care to spend at $3300], a Studio 17 [maybe], the Vaio F [I have the AW and FW right now] or the Vaio EC 17 if it comes to the states.

In looking at those the Envy seems to be pretty good.
